Election Commission throws open EVM challenge Kulbhushan Jadhav case: ICJ did not f e i r B News rule on consular access, says Sartaj Aziz Man arrested for trying to kill former employer

Agency | New Delhi Police have arrested a 27-year- old man who had allegedly attempted to kill his former employer by slitting her neck with a knife, from a night shelter in Nizamuddin area. Anil Panwar alias Kallu, who was working as a driver for fashion designer Kaveri Lal (27), had allegedly misbehaved with her boyfriend and was fired from his job in December last year. After getting fired, he had been demanding a month’s salary from her. On May 14, Panwar called Lal out of her Malviya Nagar residence on the pretext of asking her to park her car properly, and demanded his dues. After she refused, he had attacked her with a knife.

Putting to rest all speculations surrounding the tamperability of EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines), Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi on Saturday reiterated that manipulation of machines at the manufacturing stage is not possible due to stringent security measures. “No manipulation of EVM is possible,” said Zaidi during a press conference called upon to ensure credibility and the authenticity of the voting machine. Throwing an open challenge to all national and state political parties from June 3 onwards to prove that the machines can’t be tampered with, the Election Commission stated that parties will need to confirm their interest by 5 pm on 26th May. Through this process, the poll watchdog will be able to restore and enhance voters’ confidence in the EVM voting system, said Zaidi. “We are hold-

ing challenge not to win or lose but to strengthen our processes,” he added. Asserting that improving election process is responsibility of all stakeholders and citizens of India, Zaidi said replacement of internal circuit of EVMs is not possible as they have strong technological features and are tamper-proof. “The Election Commission would like to assure the citizens of the country that the commission won’t leave any stone unturned to maintain the credibility and integrity of the election process. We want all citizens and stakeholders to be aware of our electoral processes so that the commission can further strengthen the conduct of free and fair elections in the country,” the CEC said. Targeting critics, the Chief Election Commissioner stated that people who questioned the reliability of EVMs are yet to provide any

proof or credible material to support their claim. With an aim to bring in more transparency, the Election Commission said all future elections will be held with Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail System (VVPAT) along with EVMs across polling stations. He added that 16.5 lakh VVPAT are currently under production. Last month, sixteen opposition parties had urged the Election Commission to adopt the old paper ballot system saying that the alleged tampering has created trust deficit in the credibility of the EVMs. Parties alleged that the machines used in the recently-held assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Goa and Punjab were tampered with and favoured the BJP. Earlier this month, the Aam Aadmi Party had conducted a live demonstration on how the voting machines can be manipulated during

a special session of the Delhi assembly. However, the poll panel responded to the development saying it was a prototype which was made to function in a ‘tampered’ manner.

officers of the force. This is the first time that an IAF chief has written a personal letter to all officers, although two Army chiefs — Field Marshal (then General) K M Cariappa on May 1, 1950 and General K Sundarji on February 1, 1986 — have penned similar missives. “In the present scenario, there is an ever persistent sub-con-

ventional threat. Therefore, we need to be prepared for operations with our present holdings, at a very short notice. Training needs to be focused towards this,” says the letter. The “sub-conventional threat” is said to be a reference to the ‘proxy war’ by Pakistan, which is reflected in the increasing number of terror attacks on military camps and the rising public unrest in Jammu and Kashmir. The mention in the letter of “our present holdings” is an indication of the severe shortfall in the number of fighter squadrons with the IAF. The IAF is

authorised 42 squadrons of fighter aircraft but its current holding is down to 33. A deal for 36 Rafale fighters, signed with France, and a decision to induct indigenous Tejas fighters will barely make up for the de-induction of the MIG series of fighters from the fleet. Asking officers to be “combat effective professionals”, ACM Dhanoa writes that “there is no choice but to stay abreast of new technological advancements both own as well as that of our adversaries. Only then will we come out with war-winning, out of the box solutions.”

Agency | New Delhi Claiming that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) hadn’t given any order on consular access to Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Sartaj Aziz on Saturday said it was wrong to conclude that Pakistan lost the case as the court stayed the Jadhav’s execution until further notice. Aziz added that there was insufficient time ahead of the hearing of the case and that the country would strengthen its legal team. India had taken Pakistan to the international court after Jadhav was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court for alleged espionage and subversive activities in March. “International Court of Justice has not given any order regarding consular access for Kul-

bhushan Jadhav,” Aziz was quoted saying said. “We will go with a strong team in the next hearin,” he told reporters. Aziz had previously said a new team of lawyers will be constituted to “present Pakistan’s stance vigorously”. Describing Jadhav as “an officer in the Indian Navy who has also admitted to carrying out espionage activities in Pakistan”, Aziz said he was sentenced in accordance with the laws of Pakistan. Reacting to the interim verdict delivered two days ago by the top UN court, Pakistan had

said it would provide ‘solid evidence’ against Jadhav in the court. It claimed Jadhav had confessed, on two occasions, to sabotage, terrorism and subversive activities. Pakistan Foreign Office Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said India tried to divert global attention by presenting the case from a humanitarian angle, and that the country’s ‘real face’ will be exposed before the world. Separately, Pakistan’s Punjab Province Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said the country will accept the court’s decision.

Iranian nation in creating a huge and memorable epic in the continuation of the path of ‘wisdom and hope’,” he said on Twitter, alluding to the president’s slogan. Rouhani’s rival in the election, Raisi, is a 56-yearold hardliner. Portraying himself as a protector of the impoverished, he had campaigned on the ideology of taking a tougher stance against Western countries.

submitting more proof to the poll panel. The meeting came even as actor Rajinikanth dropped hints about his joining politics. He appealed to his fans to be ready for ‘war’ at the right time as he slammed corruption in the state. He said ‘we all have to work together’ to change the system.

Iran: President Hassan Rouhani wins re-election with 57 per cent majority Agency | New Delhi

The results of Iran’s presidential race are in and, according to Iran’s interior ministry, President Hassan Rouhani has won the re-election with a 57 per cent majority. Reports claim that Rouhani managed to secure 23.5 million votes, defeating hardliner Ebrahim Raisi whose vote count touched 15.8 million. State authorities say that almost 40 million votes were cast, and counting has been completed for more than 99 per cent votes. The

68-year-old leader, who vowed to work on civil rights issues in Iran as well as bridging the country’s gap with the rest of the world, has repeated his 2013 win. Winning the race banking on a reformist agenda, Rouhani has been influential in bringing about the 2015 nuclear deal with world leaders which ended a 13-year-long sanction on the country’s nuclear programme. 2 / Dt. 21-05-2017, Sunday Editors’ Picks Sunday, May 21, 2017 Aam Aadmi Party: A victim of Arvind Kejriwal’s political ambition The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) appears to be in a veritable free fall. It lost an election in Punjab where virtually all observers believed that it held a substantial initial advantage. It not only lost to a party whose political fortunes appear to be in a state of permanent decline but barely exceeded the performance of the ruling coalition widely panned for an ineffective and corrupt administration. It has only taken AAP two years to turn its magnificent victory in Delhi into a humiliating defeat in the recently held municipal elections. Worryingly for AAP, the Congress voters who had completely abandoned the party in Delhi appear to be coming back home. What would give further pause to AAP supporters is the clear lack of self-reflection and self-criticism. It has preferred a bizarre tirade against electronic voting machines (EVMs) aligned with its preternatural ability to convert every disagreement into a grand conspiratorial narrative. Though it might appeal to party’s core supporters and help Arvind Kejriwal maintain his halo of popularity, it strengthens the narrative that AAP is an irresponsible party which cannot be trusted with power. After promising a political culture radically different from the rest, it has exceeded the Congress party in its desire to deflect responsibility from the paramount leader. Further exasperating the true believers is the constant and bitter infighting. In its latest itineration, Kapil Mishra has been unceremoniously dumped from the cabinet. Kapil Mishra’s charges of personal corruption against Arvind Kejriwal are too convenient to be believed but there is a delicious irony in AAP being hoist by its own petard. Its habit of flinging reckless charges, cheered on by a section of the media which confuses foolhardiness with bravery, has led it to a sorry point where even its genuine criticism of Modi government’s high-handedness has few takers. So is the party over for the AAP? Or can it still stage a comeback? The odds are against it but nothing is impossible in politics. Arvind Kejriwal has certainly proved previously that he is endowed with an extra ordinary fighting spirit. AAP and its leaders need to recognize and celebrate their success. In India’s stultified politics where outsiders are rare and lineage or political affiliations count the most, Kejriwal has succeeded with no god fathers and little political infrastructure or monetary wherewithal. Delhi may only be half a state but in a country where even panchayat elections are fiercely contested, winning a state is a significant achievement. Seasoned professionals like Nitish Kumar or Mamata Banerjee who have been in politics for decades struggle to win a single seat outside their strong holds. And yet within four years, the AAP is the main opposition in Punjab. That is nothing to be scoffed at But it is unclear if Kejriwal understands the enormity of his own political achievements. Perhaps he suffers from a savior complex or he genuinely believes that he is the leader India needs right now.

Wait, WHAT? Did Alia Bhatt WALK OUT of Shah Rukh Khan’s next with Aanand L Rai? Agency | New Delhi

Shah Rukh Khan’s next with Aanand L Rai has been grabbing the eyeballs ever since the project was announced. Shah Rukh will be seen in the avatar of a midget in the movie. Speculations about who will be SRK’s leading lady in the film have been rife for a long time. Earlier, several reports suggested that Deepika Padukone will be playing the part. Later, it was reported that Alia Bhatt has replaced Deepika to star in the film. Now, word has it that Alia has decided to opt out of the film. A report on Catchnews quoted a source as saying, “After Deepika Padukone opted out, citing date issues, Alia was almost finalised for the film. It was also said that she will be seen playing a dwarf like Shah Rukh Khan in the film. However, now she too has said to have date issues and may not be able to be part of the film.” Earlier, a spokesperson from Rai’s team had stressed upon the time that would be required to

prep up for the role. He had stated, “The casting is underway and is taking time as it is a difficult role, in fact one of the most challenging that Aanand has ever worked on. The role needs a lot of prep time as well as shoot time for which a substantial chunk of dates are required. It’s not just about finishing this film but making it.” In case you’ve come in late, Katrina Kaif has already been cast as one of the leading ladies in the film. Now, looks like the team is on the look out for the other actress once again.

Don’t have publicity machine working Kriti Sanon on Raabta: The entire crew of the film thought I was possessed around me: Shenaz Treasurywala Agency | New Delhi

Agency | New Delhi

Actress Shenaz Treasurywala, who has been in the entertainment industry for over a decade, says she has been doing American shows and films before actress Priyanka Chopra, but as she does small roles, she has no publicity machine working around her. Asked if it’s a conscious decision to not to take up several films in career expanding over a decade, Shenaz told IANS over e-mail: “I’ve not been in India for the past seven years. I’ve been working in American shows and films. I currently even have one on Netflix. It’s called ‘Brown Nation’. “I started doing American films and TV before Priyanka, but of course I do small roles in big films and I don’t have the publicity machine working around me. I have been working in Brown Nation, Nightly Show, One Life To Live, Gentlemen, The Big Sick,” she added. In Bollywood, Shenaz will next be seen in Tiger Shroff starrer Munna Micheal. Currently part of the popular Netflix show – Brown Nation, she has been gearing up to be part of the hollywood industry. The story revolves around two families, a Pakistani and an American, where the 35-year-old star plays the role of a Pakistani. Talking about her role, Shenaz said, “I play a young Pakistani girl and Anupam Kher’s daughterin-law.” “The Pakistani family has lived in America for a long time.

Actor Kriti Sanon doesn’t believe in playing a role on-screen just for the sake of it. The actor, who has worked in two films so far—Heropanti (2014) and Dilwale (2015) — seems to have prepared a bit too hard for her role in her next film, Raabta. In the film, Kriti will be seen portraying two different characters, which are quite distinct from each other. First, she plays the role of a modern girl and the other character shows her in distant past, with sinister-looking kohl-eyes. According to a source, before shooting for the intense dramatic scenes, the 26-yearold actor would scream loudly, as she felt that doing so helped her perform well and get into the character and its feel. Ask Kriti if such a thing actually made it easier for her to get into the skin of the character, she says, “In Raabta, we were in a mansion and there was an intense scene between me and Jim [Sarbh]. Just before the take, every time, I used to scream my lungs out. It releases a lot of energy and makes me get into the zone, both physically and mentally. It was funny because Dinoo (director Dinesh Vijan) told me later that the crew thought I was possessed.” On why she opted for such a technique in the first place, Kriti adds that everyone has their own process. “For me, I think of what the character must be feeling before a scene and in that moment. For intense scenes, depending on the scene, I sometimes just walk really fast or listen to a particular song that puts me in that zone,” adds the actor, who will be sharing screen space with actor Sushant Singh Rajput. The two are rumoured to be dating, despite denials from both.

Actor Kriti Sanon made her debut with Tiger Shroff in the film Heropanti (2014)

IPL 2017: Mumbai Indians tactical acumen propels them to the finals

Ahmedabad

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Agency | Mumbai Mumbai Indians have had the reputation of being slow starters in the IPL and in previous editions faced a torrid time going into the final stages of the IPL. Last year as well, Mumbai Indians had a mixed start to the IPL and after 5 games, they won two and lost 3. However, in this edition, they have turned things around and have been in incredible form this season. Some smart tactical changes and quick fix ideas have contributed to Mumbai’s success in each of their wins so far. For example going ahead with Karn Sharma instead of the experienced Harbhajan Singh. Also the Pandya brothers have played a crucial role. They have become the x-factor of the home team. Against KKR Krunal Pandya was floated ahead of big hitter Kieran Pollard and he rose to the occasion by hitting

a brilliant 45 of just 30 balls. Another player who has risen to the occasion is Nitish Rana who can be deemed as the find of the season so far. The bowling too has come good with a lethal combination of Lasith Malinga and Jaspirit Bumrah. Added to that is the resurgence of Harbhajan Singh. The ‘turbanator’ has taken the responsibility of bowling in the powerplay and has also chipped in with crucial wickets Conceding less than six runs per over, the veteran offspinner is showing why is he still one of the best in the game. The extra bounce on the red-soil pitch at

Wankhede helped him bowl his variations. The fact that he loves to bowl here can be gauged from the fact that he has picked up 51 wickets at the Wankhede, which is the most by an Indian bowler at a venue. Completing him well is Karn Sharma who picked up his career-best 4/16 after a brilliant performance against KKR in the qualifiers. Meanwhile, the power hitters in Mumbai’s batting unit comprising of Kieron Pollard, Parthiv Patel have kept Mumbai’s batting unit powerful as usual as they hold the ability to single-handedly win matches.

the fourth minute of the match. India tried to build pressure from the second quarter by earning a penalty corner in the 22nd minute. Finally, India bounced back with a goal

when Deep Grace Ekka converted the penalty corner with a clean flick to reduce India’s disadvantage to one goal. This penalty corner was her second successful PC in the series. New Zealand didn’t plan to stop after scoring two when Pippa Hayward scored the third goal for the Kiwis in the 27th minute to make it 3-1. India did not lose hope in the final match as they again earned a penalty corner in the 33rd minute of the match, skipper Rani Rampal led from the front as she converted the corner into a well-placed goal for the visitors, making it 2-3. Later, India also had two easy chances with backto-back penalty corners but failed to capitalise on the chances. For the Black Caps, Natasha Fitzsimons (37′), Samantha Harrison (38′).

first season of IPL, and it has grown manifolds since then. It has been estimated that Delhi Daredevils mentor Rahul Dravid draws a salary of Rs 4.5 crores per year. Even by IPL standards, it is the maximum payout for a coaching role. However, a source revealed to The Times of India that Australian Ricky Ponting got almost the same amount as Dravid during his twoyear tenure with Mumbai Indians. It has been learnt

from different sources that Daniel Vettori (Royal Challengers Bangalore) and Jacques Kallis (Kolkata Knight Riders) are making somewhere around Rs 3.5 crore per year. Virender Sehwag (Kings XI Punjab), Mahela Jayawardene (Mumbai Indians), Tom Moody (Sunrisers Hyderabad) and Stephen Fleming (Pune Rising Supergiant) are said to be in the Rs 2.3 to Rs 3-crore category. Sachin Tendulkar continues his association with IPL franchise Mumbai Indians even after retirement in the capacity of the ‘franchise icon’. A look back at previous nine IPL finals Rising Pune Supergiant will be up against Mumbai Indians on Sunday in the final of IPL 2017 - the tenth edition

Agency | New Delhi

The stage is all set for the final of the tenth edition of Indian Premier League and it will be Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians who would lock horns with Steve Smith-led Rising Pune Supergiant in Hyderabad. Pune made a berth in the final of IPL 2017 after beating Mumbai Indians in the first qualifier match while two-time champions Mumbai registered a place after they defeated Kolkata Knight Riders in the second qualifier match. Ahead of the finals of IPL 10, we take a look at the previous nine finals and its respective results. Rajasthan Royals couldn’t have asked for a

better finish in the inaugural edition of the cash-rich league. Shane Warne was leading this side and the Australian after winning the toss asked CSK to bat first. MS Dhoni’s team did compile a good total in Mumbai when they put on 163/5 in allotted 20 overs. Suresh Raina emerged to be the highest run-getter for his side in that match as he smashed 30-ball 43. Rajasthan Royals didn’t start off well as they lost the first wicket at a score of 19 runs. Rajasthan kept on losing wickets at regular intervals but Yusuf Pathan’s 56 anchored them to win in the final. He was though run out by Raina but a half-century from

the right-handed batsman was enough to take his team over the line. Rajasthan grabbed the win of the last delivery when a back of the length delivery from Balaji was pulled by Sohail Tanvir for a single. They won the match by 3 wickets. Deccan Chargers might not have had a great run in the inaugural season but they turned the fortunes for themselves and registered a berth in the finals of the second edition and set up a clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Johannesburg. RCB skipper Anil Kumble won the toss and asked Adam Gilchrist’s DC to bat first. Deccan lost skipper Gilchrist without troubling

the scorers but an emphatic inning from Herschelle Gibbs guided the side to a decent total. Apart from Gibbs, Andrew Symonds too chipped in with 21ball 33 during the course. Deccan Chargers scored 143/6 in 20 overs. RCB skipper Kumble returned with figures of 4/16 in 4 overs. In reply, RCB never really looked settled against Deccan bowlers.

They kept on losing wickets regularly and were left tottering at 99/6 when Virat Kohli was undone by Symonds for 7. RCB eventually lost the match by 6 runs. Chennai Super Kings made their second appearance in an IPL final when they were up against Mumbai Indians in 2010 edition. This was the second instance when CSK were in the finals.

The match was scheduled to take place at DY Patil Stadium. Dhoni, after winning the toss elected to bat first and his troops didn’t even disappoint their skipper. Riding high on Suresh Raina’s unbeaten 57, CSK put on 168/5 in 20 overs. In this edition of the IPL final, CSK made its consecutive appearance in it. CSK in 2011 edition set up a final against RCB at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk. MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat first in Chennai. Defending champions Chennai Super Kings were in the finals for the third time on the trot in 2012 season of IPL.

Gujarat: Coolers, sprinklers installed at zoo for animals to beat the heat

As the state reels under extreme heat where the temperatures reach to a minimum of 40 degrees, it is indeed difficult for a human to come out the house during the day. What about the animals who are kept in the zoo where many of the animals do suffer from the heat. Taking this as a concern of matter, the zoo authorities have installed coolers in front of the cages where the animals are kept for the visitors to watch. Reports said that the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Zoo authorities had asked the workers to sprinkle water on the an-

imals during the morning hours and kept inside the cages where the coolers are installed for relief from the heat to the animals. Based on the animal type the sprinklers and coolers were installed as to make the animals comfortable in their cages. It is not the first time that animals were treated in this way. Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad on April 14, 2017 had installed air-coolers along with supplying special diet to all the animals. It is usual in Hyderabad that the temperature reaches a minimum of 41 degrees, it is difficult for both the humans and animals to

ernment in 2013. It was sanctioned under the engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) route to prevent levy of toll on motorists using the bridge,” Patel

said. It is shocking to see that a toll booth is being constructed near the bridge, the Congress leader said and appealed to Gadkari to order a halt to the work.

A Delhi court has rejected the plea of a Delhi-based woman lawyer to lodge an FIR against Gujarat BJP parliamentarian K C Patel, accusing him of rape. The lawyer is the same woman who is currently in custody for allegedly trying to extort money from Patel by making an objectionable video. In his order, Metropolitan Magistrate Harvinder Singh observed that the “conduct of the (woman) as revealed (by police submissions) shows that (she) was not inclined to get her FIR registered, and delayed it for manipulating the situation to her advantage.” “The complainant ear-

lier also lodged similar complaints against various MPs, ministers, civil servants, and thereafter backtracked from her allegations, presumably for consideration,” the court said. The extortion case filed by the MP against the woman is going on before a separate special court. The woman has been in custody since May 2 in connection with the case. According

to the woman, the MP had visited her residence on March 28 and had forced himself on her, and later when she went to the police station, police refused to lodge an FIR. The MP claims that when he visited her, she drugged him and made an objectionable video of him. The woman admitted that she made a video, but claimed she made it to “protect herself”.

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is now the second batsman after Suresh Raina to have 300+ runs in all ten editions of the IPL. Mumbai Indians skipper, Rohit Sharma, scored 4000 runs in IPL on Monday. With this Sharma becomes the fourth player after Raina, Kohli and Gambhir to cross this landmark. The most number of runs in IPL have been scored by Suresh Raina who is currently leading the charts. Behind him is Virat Kohli, who is followed by Gautam Gambhir and now Rohit Sharma is behind Gambhir. Rohit Sharma

also features in the list of leading run-scorers in T20s for India. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma had come into the IPL after being off cricketing action for nearly six months. but he soon returned to form with a good fifty against RPS as he scored a 39-ball 58. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma hinted that he might open the innings

at some stage in the ongoing IPL but that will totally depend on the need of the team. Rohit regularly opens for India in ODIs but has batted at no. 4 positions in this IPL season. “I would love to open, but you have to see certain things from the team’s perspective, find the right balance. (I) batting at 4 or 3 gives the team right balance,” said Rohit, who cracked an unbeaten 29ball 40 as MI defeated Gujarat Lions’ six wickets with three balls to spare. “Last year we felt we wanted someone to bat till the end which was not happening and we were not able to finish the games.

Govt may step in if triple talaq practice not changed: Venkaiah Naidu Agency | Amaravati

The government may have to step in and enact a law to ban triple talaq if the Muslim community fails to “change” the practice, Union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said on Saturday. “It is for the society to take up the issue and it will be good if the (Muslim) society itself changed the practice. Otherwise, a situation may arise where the government will have to bring in a legislation (banning triple talaq),” Mr. Naidu said while addressing a meeting in Amaravati. “This is not to interfere in anybody’s personal matters, but at the same time it’s a ques-

tion of justice to women. All women should have equal rights. Equality before law...that’s the issue,” the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister said. He recalled that laws were enacted to rid certain evil practices even in the Hindu society, like child marriage, sati and dowry. “The Hindu society discussed child

marriages and Parliament passed a legislation banning it. Second is sati sahagaman, an ancient practice, wherein a woman too ended her life following her husband’s death. Now it is prohibited by law, by the Hindu society itself. Third is dowry. The Dowry Prohibition Act was passed and the Hindu society accepted it,” the Union Minister pointed out. “When it felt that such practices were against the society’s good, the Hindu society discussed them and brought in reforms. Some more reforms are also needed and efforts should be made in that direction,” he added. “See humans as humans.

IPL 2017: The resurgence of Rising Pune Supergiant

Agency | New Delhi Before the start of the IPL Rising Pune Supergiants made it to the headlines after the owners and management sacked former Indian captain MS Dhoni. After this, they went on to buy Ben stokes for Rs 14.5 crore which made a bigger headline. These two decisions were made in order to change their fate from the last season. However, after a stuttering start RPS, got their campaign back on track as Steve Smith led from the front. A lot of credit has to go, Steve Smith, no doubt as he has turned the fortunes of a side which was languishing at the bottom last year. Owner Sanjiv Goenka, recently in an interview said,”My brief to Smith was: win the championship. It’s difficult to believe the way he has planned some dismissals, the tact and the firmness

with which he has dealt with tricky situations and the win-or-nothing attitude he has been able to infuse into the team, get them to gel as a unit. And he’s gone out in the strategic timeouts to tell batsmen to either score 30 of the next 12 balls or get out. If we had a bad start, it was because Smith was out with food poisoning,” From last season, RPSG changed 11 players. Since then the team has got younger and fitter. On the other hand players like Ben Stokes and Jaydev Unadkat have risen to the occasion and delivered consistently which has helped Pune sketch a remarkable run into the finals. It may be recalled here that at one stage Pune was struggling to even make it to the top four but the bowling unit came good in the nick of time which led to Pune’s rise.

This time Cannes for me will not be such a grand affair: Sonam Kapoor

Agency | Mumbai Sonam Kapoor and her clothes have always garnered utmost attention – be it red carpet events or film premiers. But the actor has qualms in admitting that she loves clothes and that she’d ‘rather peo-

ple talk about her clothes than personal life’. In an interview with HT Café, Sonam talks about Cannes, clothes and her slate of upcoming films. I am wearing some amazing clothes so I am quite excited about that. But the best thing is just the energy. I make sure to have fun because if you aren’t having fun that shows in the way you look and the way you dress. I don’t feel the pressure because I am walking for a cosmetic giant but I am sure it would have been different if it were for a film. This time, Cannes for me will not be such a grand affair because I am hardly there for three days.
