Justice CS Karnan arrested from Coimbatore Agency | New Delhi
Former Calcutta high court judge CS Karnan was on Tuesday arrested from Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore and was taken to Chennai. Sixty-two-year-old Justice Karnan had been evading arrest since May 9 after being sentenced to six months imprisonment for contempt of court by the Supreme Court. He won the dubious distinction of being the first sitting high court judge to be awarded a jail term by the apex court. Karnan is facing six months imprisonment for contempt of the Supreme Court, retired on June 12, probably escaping the odium of a sitting judge being arrested while in office. Justice Karnan, who was transferred to Kolkata after he had kicked up a row by raking up issues
against other judges of the Madras High Court, including the Chief Justice, has been untraceable ever since the apex court sentenced him for contempt on May 9. A seven-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar held Karnan guilty of contempt and ordered six months imprisonment for him. A team of West Bengal police had rushed to Chennai and other places in Tamil Nadu looking for him but without success. Just a day after their 7-1 win over Pakistan, India were completely outplayed by Netherlands and beaten 3-1 in the Hockey World League semi-final group stage. Netherlands took a lead within the first minutes through Thierry Brinkman. Subsequent goals from Neth and Pruijser gave them a 3-0 lead in the first half. Akashdeep was the lone goalscorer for India. The first half was all about India trying to deal with the waves of Dutch attacks coming their way. They couldn’t do much about as was evident from the 3-0 scoreline that was flashing on the screen by the end of the half. India, for their part, were sloppy whenever they had possession. Netherlands never gave them a moments rest and intercepted their passes regularly. At the end of the first half, Akashdeep Singh received the ball inside the

They made lesser chances and hogged possession. They took advantage of India’s general sloppiness and intercepted passes in those rare moments when India had the ball. There were a few chances for India and those were always seen off by the Dutch defence. The loss doesn’t really have dire consequences. India are still through to the quarter-finals. They were leading the group table before the match and now are second to Netherlands.

The office of the President must be above caste, religion and gender
It is par for the course that most appointments to high office are needlessly politicised these days and it would seem that the presidential post is no exception. It is unfortunate that Union minister and Lok Janshakti Party leader Ram Vilas Paswan should have chosen to drag the discourse down by saying that anyone opposing the candidature of Ram Nath Kovind as president will be seen as anti-Dalit. He went on to say this choice was a `tight slap’ for those who branded the Modi government as anti-Dalit. The Opposition meanwhile is said to be trying to put up another Dalit candidate to counter this, further reducing the level of the debate. The office of the president should be above all caste, religious or gender considerations. The candidate should not be part of a larger political agenda on the part of either the government or the Opposition. No one doubts the credentials of Ram Nath Kovind or the fact that him being chosen is a victory for equal opportunity. Similarly, when KR Narayanan became president much was made of his Dalit credentials, quite overlooking his distinguished diplomatic career. The media is adding to the politicisation by terming the choice as a masterstroke and one which has taken the wind out of the Opposition’s sails. The president ultimately presides over the government and armed forces and should not a partisan or divisive figure. If the government and Opposition were serious about giving the Dalits a level playing field, they must go much beyond this move. The Dalits need education, healthcare and jobs, something which politicians pay lip service to come elections. They are also often subject to caste violence and ostracisation in a hidebound casteist society. This should be addressed. In recent times, we have seen attacks on Dalits in various parts of the country. This is what should exercise political parties. As of now, it would seem that the NDA has the numbers to carry the day. Even if the Opposition were to put up a candidate, and it seems likely that it will, all parties should resolve to keep the discussion from degenerating into a political fight. As of now, the NDA is being accused of playing the Dalit card. This is to do a disservice to Kovind who has come up on his own merit and has not played any card. The office of the first citizen should really float above the fray and if going forward, the debate can be kept as non-partisan as possible, this would set the right benchmark for the future.

To celebrate three years of the NDA government as many as nine PSUs hosted 30 events in various parts of Gujarat, which began on May 26 and concluded Sunday. While the PSUs admit that the expense of the events has caused a drain on their event budget allocations, they say that getting a “foothold” in Gujarat is incentive enough. The total expenditure for the events in Gujarat is pegged at Rs 15 crore, according to PSUs. Some PSUs have spent up to Rs 50 lakh per event. The student, Dhruvi Chauhan, was a resident of Mira Society in Chhani Jakat Naka area of Vadodara. She committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan using a dupatta in her room number 43 at New Girls Hostel building. The results of the survey indicate that nearly three quarters (74 percent)of consumers who took the survey check their credit score at least twice per year. Respondents reported several motivations for checking their credits score. Nearly a third (29 percent) of the survey participant who have checked said they did so primarily to improve it, while another 28 percent checked in preparation for taking a loan or opening a new credit card. “Checking your CIBIL score and report before applying for a loan or credit line is an important step, but that should not
