CBI sends Lalit Modi’s docs to Interpol for Red Corner notice Agency | New Delhi Former IPL boss Lalit Modi accused of money laundering during the T-20 cricket tournament, is likely to be handcuffed soon for as CBI has cleared the ground for Interpol to issue a Red Corner notice against him. “All necessary documents in the case being probed by Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been sent to the Interpol for issuance of the notice,” official sources said. The move came after a Mumbai Court recently issued a non-bailable warrant

against the former IPL Commissioner. The ED has sought Interpol’s help as domestic legal options available to it for serving its summons to Modi issued under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) failed. After his lawyer in Mumbai refused to accept the summons, contending he was not authorised for it, the ED had e-mailed it to the former IPL honcho, who has made London his home, but elicited no response from him. CBI is the nodal agency for Interpol-related affairs in India. The Red Corner

notice is issued “to seek the location and arrest of wanted persons with a view to extradition or similar lawful action” in a criminal case probe. Once the red corner notice has been issued, the Interpol seeks to arrest the person concerned in any part of the world and notifies that country to take his or her custody for further action at their end.

Former Gujarat finance minister, Congress MP and veteran industrial labour activist Sanat Mehta, 90, passed away in Vadodara on Thursday evening, hours after showing signs of life, and reviving hopes in the family, as they waited for a “miracle” after he was brought home from hospital. Mehta who was based in Vadodara, was taken to hospital following a cardiac arrest late Tuesday night and was on life support after being declared comatose. On Thursday morning, Mehta was declared dead with

the family announcing his funeral. Emails were sent out by his personal assistant Zahur Ahmed at 11 am that he had passed away. However, around 2 pm, Mehta’s family declared that he “miraculously survived”, and called off the funeral scheduled at 5 pm. Between these events, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot, Congress leader Arjun Modhwadia had sent out condolence messages on twitter and

other media. Mehta took his last breathe at around 7.30 pm on Thursday. According to the family, Mehta had been unwell for the last few days and suffered a cardiac arrest at around 10.30 pm on Tuesday. On Thursday morning, shortly after 10 am, Mehta’s son, Sheetal announced, “My father has left the world. The funeral will take place at Bahuchraji (crematorium) at 5pm today”. The message, family sources say, was sent out after the doctors at a private hospital where Mehta was admitted, advised the family to take the veteran Con-

The sanctuary is home to species like sloth bear, wild boars, leopards and numerous other species. The sanctuary, according to the state forest department, is a corridor for the movement of sloth bears in the eastern part of the state. Forest department officials said a seven-member monitoring committee will be responsible for enforcing the guidelines pertain-

The committee, to be headed by the district collector, will have four members from MoEFCC and three members decided by the state government. The committee will not be empowered to give environmental clearances. “If any activity requires prior permission or environmental clearance, such activity should be referred to the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change,” the notification states.

The blasts were planned by the perpetrators to avenge Babri Masjid demolition in 1992.

2 / Dt. 21-08-2015, Friday Editors’ Picks Friday, AUGUST 21, 2015 “father of the Taliban” Hamid Gul

Hamid Gul, the former head of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence spy agency, who passed away on August 15, was the epitome of a Pakistan army officer who became an advocate and supporter of the global jihad. His legacy is an army that remains both a patron and a victim of terror. South Asia and the world are more dangerous thanks to his years of duplicity and violence. Gul died at the age of 78 in Murree. He joined the Pakistan army in 1956 and fought in the 1965 and 1971 wars with India as a tank commander. He became a protege of General Zia-ul-Haq and succeeded his patron as commander of the powerful First Armoured Division in 1980 after Zia had seized power in a coup. Zia gave Gul command of the ISI in March 1987, replacing General Akhtar Abdur Rahman. Akhtar had devised the strategy of supporting the mujahideen in Afghanistan that bogged the Soviet Union’s 40th Red Army down in a quagmire. Zia and Akhtar trained, equipped and led the Afghans while securing the support of the United States and Saudi Arabia to fund the war. China provided the bulk of the weapons. It was a careful strategy, devised to keep the pot simmering in Afghanistan, not to let it boil over and provoke a Soviet attack on Pakistan. By 1987, the Russians were losing in Afghanistan and preparing to withdraw in defeat. Zia and Akhtar died in a mysterious airplane crash just as victory seemed close. Gul pushed a new strategy once the Russians left in early 1989. The mujahideen would transition from guerrilla warfare to conventional warfare. They would take on the Afghan communist army the Soviets had left behind in Kabul and other cities for a decisive final offensive. Gul told Pakistan’s young prime minister, Benazir Bhutto, that the war would be over in a few months and Pakistan would instal a puppet government in Kabul. Victory was in sight, it seemed. The US Central Intelligence Agency was equally certain of victory. In early 1989, the ISI commanded the mujahideen to lay siege to Jalalabad. It was a disastrous mistake. Moscow poured weapons into the battlefield and the communist Afghans held their ground. The mujahideen were slaughtered and turned to infighting. Instead of a decisive victory, the ISI was stalemated. Benazir sacked Gul. Gul blamed the Americans, claiming that they had somehow betrayed the cause. As director general of the ISI, Gul also devoted major resources to the India front, as Zia wanted. The ISI trained Muslim and Sikh terrorists. Gul was a godfather for the creation of the Lashkar-e-Toiba and a close associate of Hafiz Saeed. The jihad grew stronger on two fronts, east and west. After leaving the army in 1991-92, Gul became an apologist for jihadist terrorism. He met with Osama bin Laden (who had worked closely with the ISI in the war against the Soviets) and became an ardent supporter of al-Qaeda.

DAY Puli trailer: This Vijay, Sridevi Singh Is Bliing: Not a sequel to Singh Is Kinng, says Akshay Kumar starrer is stylised nonsense

Agency | New Delhi When was the last time you watched a fantasy coming out of Hollywood or cinema traditions from the West where you saw Caucasian men and women dressed in a dhoti or a sherwani? When did you see a black man wearing a Thawb (Arab clothing) and riding camels or women clad in Kimonos in stories set somewhere in remote Western locations? The closest one is likely to get is Nordic-looking Hollywood stars passing off as

Greek and Romans (refer Brad Pitt as Achilles in Troy). But that’s about it. But if you are an Indian filmmaker, anything goes. We are referring to the second trailer of Vijay-starrer Puli that was launched late on August 19. The first trailer (released June 21, 2015) left us wondering how could Indians have blue eyes? In which era did Indians ride European-style wooden carriages? The latest one, 1.53 minute long, takes that argument further and continues to baffle us.

The only bit that looks Indian is the crowd, the aam janata. The trailer opens with the viewer being introduced to the antagonists, Sudeep, the evil king and, possibly, his evil queen or sister (can’t quite figure that out), Sridevi. Needless to say, they both wear fancy gowns and cloaks. All along, we are given a glimpse of their palatial hill-top fort (Columned corridors in India?) and their collective reign of terror. Their guards too sport Western-style armour and clothing.

Agency | Mumbai Akshay Kumar says his forthcoming film Singh Is Bliing, in which he plays a Sikh character, is not a sequel to his 2008 film Singh Is Kinng. “You have seen me as a ‘sardaar’ in many films, be it Namastey London or Singh Is Kinng, but it’s (this) not a sequel to Singh Is Kinng. It is absolutely different from that,” the actor said at the trailer launch of Singh Is Bliing in Mumbai. Director Pradhudeva also stressed that, “Singh is Bliing is not a sequel to

Singh is Kinng. It is a different film. This film is in genre of Rowdy Rathore . Singh Is Bliing is a masala family entertainer film.” When asked about the experience of directing a North Indian film that has a Punjabi man as a central character (played by Akshay Kumar as Raftar Singh), Prabhudheva said, “Films don’t have a language and so does music. Singh (the character) is powerful, respectful and sensitive. He (Akshay Kumar) was there guiding me.” The trailer was launched

with much fanfare with Akshay making a grand entry on a tractor along with Prabhudheva and co-actor Amy Jackson. Talking about the film, Akshay further added, “It’s a very funny story and has a bit of emotions too. If you all remember, Prabhudheva and I did a film called Rowdy Rathore. This film belongs to that genre. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed working in it.” Singh Is Bliing also features Kay Kay Menon and Lara Dutta in pivotal roles. It is slated to release on October 2.

Agency | New Delhi Being politically correct has been the most important aspect of Bollywood. Maintaining a stiff upper lip and keeping a strict restrain on giving a frank opinion has been the unsaid rule in B-town. Laughing at oneself or the fellow members of the fraternity has been refrained for long as Bollywood demigods were always believed to be beyond jokes. Twinkle Khanna seems to be changing the Bollywood trend. In her new avatar as Mrs Funnybones, Twinkle has been giving a lesson or two in laughing out loud. Woman sues Coca Cola for denying her date with Hrithik Roshan

Agency | New Delhi

Fifteen year ago, Shikha Monga, a resident of Panchkula town in Haryana, won a Coca-Cola contest that had promised a romantic dinner with Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan. The dinner never happened and Monga, now 34, moved to the court with a damage claim of Rs.2.5 crore from the com-

pany. Civil judge (senior division) KK Jain issued the notice on a 12-yearold application by Monga. When the matter came up for hearing on Tuesday, Coca-Cola sought more time to file its reply. The case was adjourned for 24 August. Coca Cola had initially offered her Rs 5 lakh in place of the said dinner, but Monga refused to accept the offer and in-

sisted on meeting Roshan. Shikha’s suit mentioned that she spent her pocket money and bought many of Coca-Cola’s soft drink bottles in order to win the contest.

Actor Randeep Hooda turns 39 on Thursday. The actor, who aspires to work with Clint Eastwood one day, has worked with some of the most talented directors in Bollywood -- Tigmanshu Dhulia (Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster, 2011), Ketan Mehta (Rang Rasiya, 2014), Ram Gopal Varma (in his saner days – D, 2005) and Imtiaz Ali (Highway, 2014) to name a few. Artistes do their best work when they have a good sense of their art and are not only performing to the ticket windows. Randeep Hooda can well be one of the best living examples of this thought. “I never think about what others are doing. I do a film for myself, not others,” Randeep Hooda said in an interview before the release of Rang Rasiya (his last release that had a damp show at the box office). And considering his range of films -- varying from Salman Khan’s entertainer Kick (2014) to Ram Gopal Varma’s crime saga D -- it is really difficult to refute him. Ketan Mehta’s Rang Rasiya saw the light of the day in 2014, after being in the cans for six years.

Randeep’s portrayal of painter Raja Ravi Varma was apt -- enchanting and impressive. During promotions for the film, Randeep, had said, “Raja sahib had said that the deepest desire of every artist is to get across to as many people as possible. That was the day when I decided I am not going to

be a niche actor anymore and branched out to Bhatt films and other totally commercial potboilers like Kick. Niche is something which we put upon ourselves... I want to have a mass reach.” He added that it was after Rang Rasiya that he reached out to the Bhatt camp and had his share of erotica

As per NHRDF data, onions which were selling at a wholesale price of Rs 4,500 per quintal at Lasalgaon, today rose to Rs 4,900 per quintal. “Prices have today touched two-year high at Lasalgaon mainly due to decline in supplies as harvesting of onion has been delayed and now it seems that there will also be fall in production of kharif onion,” National Horticultural Research and Development Foundation (NHRDF) Director R P Gupta. Agency | Colombo The announcement of India XI for the third Test here at the P Sara Oval had all ears hooked to it. Two names made heads turn but for contrasting reasons - in approval of Harbhajan Singh’s ouster and in utter disapproval of Rohit Sharma’s retention. Cheteshwar Pujara, with the label of a Test specialist, once again re-

mained confined to the nets. Rohit Sharma, with unflinching support of Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri, was once again in the eleven. But it wasn’t Rohit who batted at No. 3, which didn’t sort but further compounded India’s No. 3 quandary that has remained as is since Rahul Dravid’s departure. Rohit was ‘shielded’ on a responsive day-one track. Ajinkya Rahane marched

in at one-drop as Murali Vijay’s return was turned into a duck by Dhammika Prasad, who kept the Indian batsmen guessing - for the perfume ball with a short-leg in place and for the sucker ball with four slips in waiting. Almost nothing for one is something Dravid walked out to for most of his career until the Sehwag-Gambhir partnership gave him some respite for a while. That highlights and heightens his contribution and character to handle what he did and still erected a mountain of 13,288 Test runs, including 36 centuries. Rahane’s promotion on Thursday looked more of a sacrifice than strategy. He was the only batsman who handled the on-song Lankan spinners in the second innings at Galle.

Gujarat Police officer Sanjiv Bhatt, who took on Narendra Modi over the 2002 riots in the state, has been sacked. In a Facebook post and in tweets, Mr Bhatt has said he was removed on the basis of a “sham inquiry and fabricated charges.” Mr Bhatt was suspended in 2011 for not showing

up at work, for misusing his official car and for threatening a constable. The Indian Police Service officer became famous for alleging that Narendra Modi, then Chief Minister of Gujarat, was complicit in the riots of 2002, in which more than 1000 people were killed. His claims were rejected by the Special Investigation

Team appointed by the Supreme Court to probe nine riots related cases. Mr Modi, who took over as prime minister after winning the national election last year, has never been found guilty of wrongdoing over the riots, and has denied any role in them. On social media, Sanjiv Bhatt said the grounds for his sacking -- unauthorised absence from duty - relates to the time he was testifying before the Special Investigation Team and the Nanavati commission on riots cases. He has also claimed he could not attend office because his mother was unwell. The Union home minister had reportedly recommended

his sacking in September last year, but the clearance came now. The government’s move comes two days after Mr Bhatt was served notice on a controversial video. In the 11-minute video clip, a person purported to be Mr Bhatt was seen with an unknown woman. The state government said forensic tests had proved that Mr Bhatt was having an affair with a woman other than his wife, which, the notice said, was conduct unbecoming of an IPS officer and violation of service rules. Mr Bhatt has denied that he was in the video clip; he said he was ready for a “detailed biometric examination” to prove it.
