Why India wins only a few Olympic medals
The joy felt by Indians over the successes of P.V. Sindhu in badminton, Sakshi Malik in wrestling and Dipa Karmakar in gymnastics is understandable. At the same time, the question needs to be asked, as has been done earlier, as to why India, a nation of 1.2 billion people, second only to China in population, could win only two medals, which is one of its worst performances in recent years? India won six medals at the 2012 Olympics and three in 2008. The usual explanation for such a dismal record is known — poor infrastructure, poor physique, poor diet and the lack of the so-called killer instinct. Our sportsmen and women are rarely up to the mark, therefore, compared to their better-prepared opponents who have had the advantages of state-of-the-art training facilities and dedicated coaches, along with a balanced diet regimen. Some of them are also selected at an early age by talent-spotters who instill in them a desire to win at major events. Where Indians are concerned, cricket is the only game where they routinely do well, as in hockey earlier. But cricket does not require as intense a schedule of training as do disciplines like athletics or swimming and does not have the kind of global competition that others sports have as its playing is limited to a handful of largely Commonwealth countries. One possible reason why India lags behind is that it has always relied more on individual talent as in the cases of Sindhu, Sakshi Malik and Dipa Karmakar than on organisations devoted to nurturing potential winners. This is true of cricket as well where the team is heavily dependent on a single player for success — whether it is Virat Kohli today or Sachin Tendulkar yesterday. Diet is another factor why India’s deficiencies show up. As Kapil Dev once said, Indians cannot be topgrade pace bowlers because they eat too much fried food. Besides, it is undeniable that virtually all the winners from European, American, African and even Asian countries like China are meat-eaters, including beef. Vegetarianism, which often leads to protein deficiency, is not exactly the road to sporting success. The inadequacy of food habits is compounded by the generally slight build of the Indians as well as the lack of stamina which is why they are nowhere near the top in, say, football, let alone rugby. An improvement in training facilities may bring in a few more medals, but the numbers are likely to remain in the single digits in the foreseeable future. Since sports do not rank as high in the priorities of most families as studies, children regard playing games as a spare-time activity rather than as a prime objective like coming first in class. As the Chinese media has patronisingly pointed out, the insistence of Indian parents on making their children doctors and engineers is one of the reasons why India does not produce world class sportspersons. Among other reasons mentioned by the media are poverty and girls not being allowed into sports. For instance, Sakshi Malik’s parents were ridiculed in Rohtak for allowing their girl to become a wrestler, supposedly a men’s sport. Ironically, the emphasis on studies does not fetch us too many Nobel prizes either. Evidently, the intellectual faculties of Indians remain as undeveloped as their sporting skills.

The film opened to empty theatres with only 10-15 percent occupancy being reported at most places. On the opening day, the film minted Rs. 2.32 cr at the box office

Made at a modest budget, the film may still pick up some speed in
the coming days. The film that is still holding sway is Akshay Kumar-starrer Rustom. The courtroom drama, which stars Akshay as a naval officer, has already earned over Rs 90 crore at the box office and is still going strong. The film is likely to enter the Rs 100-crore club this weekend. This will be Akshay’s third film this year to earn that kind of money. His Airlift and Housefull 3 had earlier earned over Rs 100 crore at box office. The other release of the week, UnIndian, also failed to enthuse audiences. Box office collections of this Brett Lee-starrer are likely to be even less than that of Happy Bhag Jayegi. Hrithik Roshan’s Mohenjo Daro has also run its course and its lifetime collections are being put around Rs 60 crore.

Agency | Mumbai State Bank of India on Saturday said that the ongoing merger of five of its associate banks and Bharatiya Mahila Bank will add Rs 8 trillion or $120 billion to its assets and will create a banking behemoth with global scale. The bank also said the merger of State Banks of Bikaner & Jaipur (SBBJ), Travancore (SBT), Patiala (SBP), Hyderabad (SBH) and Mysore (SBM), and also of Bhartiya Mahila Bank, a bank for women set up in November 2013, will lead to a 36 per cent increase in the SBI’s total assets at Rs 30 trillion or about USD 447 billion. The mergers will dwarf ICICI Bank assets to just one-fourth of SBI and will also catapult the bank into the top 50 banks globally, the bank said. The combined entity will have network of over 24,000 branches with 2,70,000 employees and 58,000 ATMs serving serving over 50 crore customers.

Based on the Pacific Ocean’s sea level in 2015, researchers estimate that by the end of this year, the world’s average surface temperature will increase up to 0.28 degrees Celsius more than in 2014. In 2015 alone, the average global surface temperature increased by 0.18 degrees Celsius, researchers said. “Our prediction is through the end of 2016. The prediction is looking on target so far,” said Cheryl Peyser from University of Arizona (UA) in the US. Previously, scientists knew that both the rate at which global surface temperature is rising and sea level in the western Pacific varied, but had not connected the two phenomena. “We are using sea level in a different way, by using the pattern of sea level changes in the Pacific to look at global surface temperatures – and this has not been done before,” said Peyser.

The Local Crime Branch (LCB) of Kutch West police picked up two men from Bhuj after district magistrate ordered their detention under the Gujarat Prevention of Anti-social Activities Act (PASA), 1985. A joint team of LCB and B Division police of Bhuj town rounded up Ramju Mokha (25) and Abbas Mandhariya (37) from their respective residences in Bhuteshwar area in Bhuj town late on Thursday night and formally served the arrest warrant issued under PASA. “The duo were formally de-
tained at 9:30 am on Friday under PASA after district magistrate approved our proposal for their detention. The district magistrate has ordered to send Mokha to Vadodara Central Jail and Mandhariya to Lajpore Central Jail in Surat. Accordingly, two police parties are escorting the duo to the respective jails,” said Yograjsinh Gohil, in-charge police inspector, LCB. Mokha and Mandhariya were first booked for cow slaughter and beef sale on December 12, 2015. But they got bail. They were caught again on March 9 this year when police conducted a raid and found them possessing beef.
