Bribe speech: Kejriwal gets Election Commission notice AAP leader's statement amounts to “abetting and promoting electoral offence of bribery”, says the EC notice. NEW DELHI, Jan 20, 2015 The Election Commission on Tuesday issued a show cause notice, the second in last three days, to Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal for “prima facie” violation of the poll code by allegedly making a speech where he asked voters to take bribes from the BJP and the Congress but only vote for his party. The EC notice said the

statement, made during a public rally on January 18, 2015, in Uttam Nagar in New Delhi, amounts to “abetting and promoting electoral offence of bribery” under relevant sections of the Representation of People Act read with provisions of the IPC. The public speech made by Mr. Kejriwal that invited the EC’s ire was: “It’s election time. When people

both from BJP and Congress come offering money, don’t refuse, accept... some have looted money from 2G, some have looted money

from coal scam... Take money from both the parties but vote for AAP. “We will fool them this time. They have been

Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal: The twins who aren’t New Delhi, Jan 20,2015 First the similarities: Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal have much in common. They are IIT alumni, former civil servants, Ramon Magsaysay recipients, social-activists-turnedpoliticians and above all self-made celebrities. Besides that near-common academic and service background, they’re temperamental twins: domineering, selfrighteous, self opinionated and habituated to marching

to their own drum beats. That makes them awkward team-players who aren’t mostly able to take peers along. They look the same age. But Arvind is about 19 years younger than the

1949 born Kiran. That explains perhaps the traits that differentiate them--for people born two decades apart can’t be replicas. Tact for instance doesn’t come easily to

Akali Dal which also announced its candidates on Tuesday. Avtar Singh Hit will contest from Hari Nagar, Harmeet Singh Kalka from Kalkaji, Jatinder Singh Shunty from Shahdara and Manjinder Singh Sirsa from Rajouri Garden for Akali Dal. SAD Delhi unit chief

Manjit Singh GK that the party candidate from Rajouri Garden Manjinder Singh will contest on SAD symbol while the remaining three party nominees will contest on BJP's Lotus symbol. In the last assembly polls in Delhi, SAD had contested four seats, two of which were contested on their own symbol.

Jharkhand chief secy removed, Gauba appointed Ranchi, Jan 20,2015 Jharkhand Chief Secretary Sajjal Chakraborty was today removed from the post nearly two years before his stint was due to end and replaced by Additional Secretary in the Union Home Ministry, Rajiv Gauba. Chakraborty was

Kiran, who can be officious to the extent of being annoying. A proof of it was the condescending manner in which she engaged with the Delhi BJP leaders the other day. As if she was addressing political sophomores, she hectored a section of the gathering that included veterans such as VK Malhotra and Harsh Vardhan, a sitting cabinet minister. “Kiran can be selfopinionated to the extent of being insubordinate,” remarked a police official who has known her for years. He wasn’t sure whether she’d succeed in politics: “She’s not amenable to contrarian views. She’s in her mid-60s which isn’t exactly the age at which one can change. Her party colleagues will have to take her on as-is-where-is basis.” The BJP’s local-brass has little choice; Kiran’s the PM’s pick for the chief ministerial sweepstakes! In fact, Arvind too had offered her the CM’s slot to draw her to AAP before the last Delhi assembly polls. That leaves him hamstrung in confronting her head-on--his attacks restricted to accusing her of joining the very forces they fought in the Anna Hazare- led anti-graft stir. But politics is more about people than political parties. Kiran will have to come to terms with that reality as she goes around seeking support for the BJP. It’s time for her to be a patient listener rather than being an incessant talker. Can she?

the opinion that by making the said statement Mr. Kejriwal has “violated the model code of conduct” which is in force in the national capital in view of the forthcoming Assembly polls on February 7. The EC said it had received complaints in this regard from political parties after which it asked the Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi to submit a CD of the speech made for review by it. The EC has asked Mr. deceiving us for the last 65 Kejriwal to respond and years. Now it’s our turn,” he present his side by 4 p.m. on Thursday failing which the had said. The notice said the poll poll body “shall take a panel “prima facie” was of decision without any further

reference” to him. It said the model code of conduct envisages that parties and candidates participating in the electoral fray shall “avoid scrupulously all activities which are corrupt practices and offences under the election law, such as bribing of voters...” Earlier on January 17, Mr. Kejriwal was issued a show cause notice by the EC for “prima facie” violating the code with his remarks alleging that the BJP is trying to incite communal violence in the capital city. The deadline for his reply to this notice is Tuesday.

Proud To Be In BJP, Modi Is My Action Hero, Says New Censor Board Chief New Delhi, Jan 20,2015 As questions were raised over several Censor Board members having BJP links, its new chief Pahlaj Nihalani, a film maker, today said he was proud to be a "BJP person" and called Prime Minister Narendra Modi as his "action hero". At the same time, Nihalani, who was the brain behind the BJP's campaign video 'Har Har Modi, Ghar Ghar Modi' in the run up to the general elections last year, said he will work the "best way" to avoid any controversy. The comments by Nihalani, who was named as the new Chairperson of Central Board of Film

Certification (CBFC) yesterday, came even as the government defended its appointments, saying the idea was to have a "mix of all". "I am proud to say I am a BJP person. I believe in BJP. Narendra Modi is the voice of the nation....He is my action hero. He is a visionary person," Nihalani told NDTV. Talking to PTI, Nihalani said he will strictly enforce the guidelines of the Censor board. "In my long experience in the film industry, I have seen that only healthy films with strong social message are a hit with the audience. As

the chairman of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), I will try to strictly enforce the guidelines laid down for the board," he said. "I will also try to strike a balance between the industry and the board," he added. Pahlaj, 65, has produced films like "Aankhen", "Talaash: The Hunt Begins..." and "Shola Aur Shabnam" in his career. The statutory board, under the Information and Broadcasting ministry, was rocked last week over the resignation of Leela Samson as its chief and nine other members alleging government interference.

Jan Dhan Yojana features in Guinness Book of World Records with 11.5 cr bank accounts New Delhi, Jan20, 2015 A s m a n y a s 11 . 5 crore bank accounts have been opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, exceeding the enhanced target of 10 crore and covering 99.74 per cent of households, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said today. “Most of India today is included in the b a n k i n g s ys t e m , ” h e said, adding that more than Rs 9,000 crore has been deposited in the Jan Dhan accounts. bank accounts for 7.5 crore poor persons by January 26, 2015. The target was later increased to 10 crore accounts. Addressing a press conference here, Jaitley said the government would use these bank accounts to pass on benefits to individuals under its various social security schemes. Financial Services Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said that even

Guinness Book of Wo r l d R e c o r d s h a s recognised the achievements made under PMJDY. In its citation, the Guinness Book said: “Most bank accounts opened in one week as part of the Financial Inclusion Campaign is 18,096,130 and was achieved by the Department of Financial Services, Government of India from August 23 to 29, 2014.”

On the shoulders of giants - CM Blog Gujarat was privileged to hosted two backto-back high profile events in the first fortnight of the New Year. With Pravasi Bharatiya Divas followed by Vibrant Gujarat Summit, the name of Gujarat kept reverberating not just in India but across the whole world. The land of Gujarat was brimming with people from across the country and annual International Kite Festival added more vibrancy to the festive atmosphere in the state. Both, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas & Vibrant Gujarat Summit had special significance this year. While this year’s Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was being celebrated to mark centenary year of Gandhiji’s return to India from South Africa, Vibrant Gujarat Summit attained a new height with world’s changed perception towards India after May 2014. With 8 country partners, more than 25000 delegates from 120 countries, CEOs from more than 300 leading companies, the scale of 7th Vibrant Gujarat Summit was much bigger than in the past. For me it became all the more special as it was the first summit for me as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. The most defining moment during the entire summit was to see dignitaries from world-over speaking the language of Gujarat. When Secretary General of United Nations Mr Ban Ki-Moon said “Kem Chho, Tamne Maline Anand Thayo”, ( How are you are, it was nice meeting you! ) it felt like our determination to scale new avenues of development has got the world talking our language. Today, when I sit-back and think of it, I feel extremely blessed to have got the opportunity to lead the hosting of such a grand event. So many nitty-gritties were involved! Even if a small thing going wrong would have led to chaos! I do not have any words to thank the Almighty for granting us such a great success. It would have not been possible without divine grace. I thank everyone right from Union Ministers to my cabinet colleagues to Team Gujarat to the citizens of Gujarat for the success of these highprofile events. I also thank media for beautifully covering both the events that boosted the image of Gujarat being a competent state. The hard work of numerous people paid off. Friends, there are two things about these events which I find noteworthy. First, the coming together of our Indian brothers & sisters residing in different parts of the world to Gujarat to mark the centenary of the return of Gujarat’s great son Mahatma Gandhi’s to his soil. Second, since centuries our Gujarati brothers & sisters have been going overseas for business and now the global business community is converging under one roof at Vibrant Gujarat. It feels the entire wheel of time has come full circle. The sun’s transit towards north has brought new rays of brightness for India and the entire world. I would say that Vibrant Gujarat Summit has marked the beginning of a new chapter of progress, prosperity and peace for India and the world. Friends, in the days to come, our state will continue to progress with vision to make Gujarat a ‘Smart State’. Gujarat has created a unique identity for itself among all the states of India. The whole country and the world have its eye set on the next step that Gujarat would take. There is a saying: If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” Gujarat’s great sons Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel and now Narendrabhai Modi have been a beacon for its exemplary success. It is their vision and leadership that has helped us carve a niche for ourselves. I feel extremely fortunate of being the Chief Minister of a progressive state that stands on the shoulders of such giants. I call on each and every Gujarati to optimize on the strong foundation we have by supporting state government’s endeavor to put Gujarat in line with developed countries of the world. And let me tell you the name of the poet whose verses I cited above. Well, the author of the poem is none else but architect of Vibrant Gujarat, NarendrabhaiModi. These verses are from his book – ‘Aankhaadhanyachhe’ (Blessed are my eyes) and title of the poem is – Aash(hope).

BJP trying to make India a 'Hindu Nation' by subverting Constitution: Congress New Delhi, Jan 20,2015 Congress on Tuesday alleged that the BJP-led NDA government was trying to make the country a 'Hindu nation' subverting the Constitution. "Secularism is the key word in the Constitution but the BJP led government at the Centre is trying to totally subvert it by using the hardline Hindu groups like the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and openly wanted people from various religions to convert to Hinduism," AICC General Secretary V Narayanasamy told reporters. "The best example is the vandalising of the churches in Delhi which is seen as encouraging the

communal elements by the BJP government at the Centre," he said. Coming down heavily on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Narayanasamy said, "Unfortunately the Prime Minister who has been talking about the development agenda is silent on the communal agenda." "When the issue was raised in Parliament in the Rajya Sabha for almost 15 days, the Rajya Sabha was paralysed for the failure of the Prime Minister to address the issue," he said. He further alleged the several promises which had been made by the NDA government and Narendra Modi, none of them have been implemented so far.

Jayalalithaa case: DMK govt erroneously over-valued jewellery, counsel Bengaluru:Jan 20,2015 The then DMK-led government had "erroneously" overvalued the jewellery of AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa and they were purchased before she became chief minister, her counsel told the Special Bench of the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday. The gold and diamond jewellery seized belonged to Jayalalithaa but she bought them before she became Chief Minister in 1991, her counsel L Nageswar Rao told Justice C R Kumaraswamy. The bench is hearing appeals by the f o r m e r Ta m i l N a d u

Chief Minister and three others challenging their conviction in a disproportionate assets case. The special bench has been set up at the direction of the Supreme Court on December 18 to decide Jayalalithaa's plea in three months. Rao also argued that the trial court had overlooked several judgements and not considered the binding nature of various income tax orders and decisions of the Income Tax Appellate Tr i b u n a l , w h i c h h a d accepted the income and level of expenditure pleaded by

her. He submitted that Jayalalithaa had acquired the property, i n c l u d i n g j e w e l l e r y, through legal means. Rao also said the trial court cited the

clean chit given by Income Tax Tribunal but did not consider it while giving the verdict, sentencing Jayalalithaa and three others to four-year jail term and imposing a

Rs 100 crore fine on her. A Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu, had granted conditional bail to Jayalalithaa who was sent to jail by a trial court on September 27, saying that hearing on her appeal against conviction in the High Court should be completed in three months from December 18. Jayalalithaa and three others were held guilty of corruption and awarded four years jail term by the Special Court here, which had also slapped a fine of Rs 10 crore each on the three others.

cruised to victory in just 27.3 overs giving them a much-needed confidence boost ahead of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand that kicks off next month. Their recent one-day form has been very poor, but they were never stretched with the bat as they finished on 156 for one, with opener Ian Bell unbeaten on 88 and James Taylor on 56 as they notched their first win under new captain Eoin Morgan. Stuart Binny, who top-scored for India with 44 in his return to the side, claimed the only wicket to fall, that of opener Moeen Ali for eight. After losing to Australia on Sunday, the Indian batsmen struggled

to cope with the lively wicket. Related Photo Gallery 3rd ODI: Tri-series, India vs England Finn, on the other hand, made the most of it to claim his first fivewicket haul in 49 one-day internationals, including a number of prized Indian scalps. He did most of his damage to the top order, as India lost their way after being in a sound position at 57-1. Seamer James Anderson, returning to the English side after injury, claimed the first wicket, removing the struggling Shikhar Dhawan for one, before Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu steadied the Indian cause with a 56-run stand.

Saha: Dhoni's retirement hasn't changed anything for me Wriddhiman Saha has said that following his retirement from Tests, MS Dhoni predicted that the current bunch of players will form the core of the Indian team for the next seven or eight years. Saha, who has been Dhoni's understudy for quite some time, says he received a lot of encouragement from the team Director Ravi Shastri, coach Duncan Fletcher and his team-mates. "MS addressed us in the dressing room after his retirement and told us that 'this is the core of the Test team that will remain for the next 7-8 years'. We should all try and perform to the best of our abilities and grab the chances that come our way," Saha told PTI from the sidelines of Bengal team's training session at the Mohan Meakin ground in Ghaziabad ahead of their Ranji Trophy Group A match against Uttar Pradesh starting from Wednesday. "Both Ravi Shastri and Duncan Fletcher were very supportive once MS announced his decision to retire from Tests. They had a lot of encouraging words for me before the Sydney Test as well as the first Test in Adelaide where the skipper was out due to

injury. Their mantra was simple. Be positive and enjoy each and every minute," said Saha, who has now played four Tests for India. It may seem that the retirement of Dhoni from Tests must have come as a relief for the 30-year-old as it raises his prospects of being a regular feature in the playing XI. However, Saha disagrees with the notion saying that everyone has an equal chance

of making it to the team and that nothing has changed for him. "I have never ever thought like that. You don't play cricket thinking that there will be comparatively lesser competition that what it was before. The opportunity is there for everybody and whoever performs will play. For me, I used to work hard even when Dhoni was playing Test cricket and it won't even change now," he said.
