Twin suicide bombings kill nearly 30, injure 73 in Baghdad Agency News: New Delhi A rare twin suicide bombing killed nearly 30 in central Baghdad on Thursday, Iraqi state media said, the deadliest attack in the city in three years. At least 28 people were killed and another 73 wounded in the attack on a huge open-air market for second-hand clothes in the Iraqi capital’s Tayaran Square. The market had been teeming with people following nearly a year of restrictions imposed across the country in a bid to halt the spread of Covid-19.

According to an interior ministry statement, the first suicide bomber rushed into the market, claiming to feel sick.Once a crowd of people had gathered around him, he detonated his explosives. As people then flocked around the victims, a second attacker detonated his bomb, the ministry said.An AFP photographer at the scene said security forces had cordoned off the area, where blood-stained clothes were strewn about the muddy streets.Paramedics were working to remove casualties, and Iraq’s health ministry said

The United States, which provides the bulk of the force, has 2,500 troops left in Iraq -- down from 5,200 a year ago. it had mobilised medics across the capital.Thursday’s attack was the bloodiest incident in Baghdad since January 2018, when a suicide bomber also in Tayaran Square killed more than 30 people.Suicide bombings had been commonplace in Baghdad during the sectarian bloodletting that followed the US-led invasion of 2003.Later on, as the Islamic State group

swept across much of Iraq, its jihadists also targeted the capital. But with the group’s territorial defeat in late 2017, suicide bombings in the city became rare.Baghdad’s notorious concrete blast walls were dismantled and checkpoints across the city removed. Thursday’s attack comes as Iraqis prepare for an election, events which are often

preceded by bombings and assassinations. The 2018 attack took place just a few months before Iraq’s last round of parliamentary elections.Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi had originally set this year’s general election for June, nearly a year ahead of schedule, in response to widespread protests in 2019.But authorities are in talks over rescheduling them to October in order to give electoral authorities more time to register voters and new parties.Thursday’s twin attack was not immediately.

The video was aired on Wednesday night hours after Biden took oath as the 46th President of the United States. It begins with Obama’s remarks. “Obviously there is a personal element to see my former Vice-

President become the 46th President and to see Kamala Harris as our first woman VicePresident. Pakistan faces dilemma of sourcing Covid-19 vaccines Pakistan doesn’t have a well developed vaccine industry, and authorities are now grappling with the possibility of having to acquire doses at significantly higher prices Agency News: New Delhi Following Prime Minister Imran Khan’s directive to expedite the procurement of Covid-19 vaccines, Pakistan is grappling with a dilemma – how to source millions of doses to inoculate the country’s most vulnerable. Unlike other countries in the neighbourhood such as Bangladesh, Pakistan didn’t place orders well in advance with foreign vaccine makers. It also doesn’t have a well developed vaccine industry, and authorities are now grappling with the possibility of having to acquire doses at significantly higher prices. Khan directed the Cabinet committee on procurement to speed up the process for acquiring vaccines. This

came days after Pakistan’s regulatory authority approved the emergency use of the AstraZeneca vaccine and the Sinopharm vaccine made by state-run China National Pharmaceutical Group. In early December, Pakistan approved $150 million in funding to buy vaccines, initially to cover the most vulnerable 5% of the population, including frontline health workers and people above the age of 65. This was almost a month after Bangladesh’s drugmaker Beximco Pharma signed an agreement with the Serum Institute of India for 30 million doses of Covishield, the AstraZeneca vaccine. These doses would be in addition to the two million doses of Covishield provided by India to Bangladesh on Thursday as a gift. There has also been no announcement by Pakistan’s “iron brother” ally China about assistance in the supply of vaccines. Given its troubled relationship with India.

SDMC’s Congress councillor Abhishek Dutt in September 2020 had moved the proposal to name the road after the actor.“It was cleared by the SDMC House in its meeting yesterday,” a senior official said. The Andrews Ganj councillor in the BJP-led South Delhi Municipal Corporation had sent the proposal to the civic body’s

road naming and renaming committee. In the written proposal to the committee, Dutt had said that a large number of people living in the area abutting Road No 8 hail from Bihar, and had claimed “they have been demanding” to name the stretch from Andrews Ganj to Indira Camp as ‘Sushant Singh Rajput Marg’.

SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Editorial

SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Will it be the sweet scent of victory for the Congress-AIUDF in Assam? The Congress has tied up with perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal’s All-India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), in the hope that the alliance will get within sniffing distance of a majority in the upcoming Assam assembly elections. The Congress-Left-AIUDF front, announced earlier this week, is being seen as a calculated risk, as it augurs a sharp polarisation of votes in the north-eastern state. The Congress high command apparently took the decision on the strength of a voters’ survey, after an intense internal debate on the pros and cons of the proposed tie-up over the last one year.Prior to 2019, Congress leaders in Assam, notably three-term chief minister Tarun Gogoi, had opposed any truck with Ajmal. They argued that the AIUDF was seen as a ‘communal’ party committed to protecting the interests of the immigrant minority population and allying with it could cost the Congress its Hindu vote. Ironically, it was Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, who had quietly lobbied for a ‘mahagathbandhan’style alliance in Assam before the 2016 assembly elections. Gogoi was disinclined, for the reasons cited above. The NDA swept to power and Sarbananda Sonowal became the state’s first BJP CM.Gogoi changed his mind last year and the two parties joined hands to ensure the election of anti-CAA journalist-activist Ajit Kumar Bhuyan to the Rajya Sabha. Shortly thereafter, Gogoi passed away, but the Congress central leadership kept up talks with Ajmal and tied up with the AIUDF for elections to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) in December last year. The two parties were on the same page vis-a-vis the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), but their tie-up could well have been read as ideological convergence. This, as well as the signing of the Bodo accord with the Centre in January last year, led to a humiliating defeat for the Congress in the BTC elections. It won just one of 40 seats and the AIUDF none.Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi spoke for many of his colleagues when he said his party had lost as a result of the alliance with the AIUDF. The lone Congress member in the BTC defected to the BJP, as did Congress leaders such as Kamal Kumar Medhi. The BJP followed up the win by sweeping the Tiwa Autonomous Council (TAC) elections. The significance of these victories was not lost on the Opposition: clearly, the sub-nationalism sparked by protests against the CAA was not as strong as anticipated. That said, there is no denying the anti-CAA sentiment among indigenous Assamesespeaking voters, who resent the potential legitimisation of illegal Bengali-Hindu migrants. They hold sway in some 36 assembly constituencies, of which the Congress won just four in 2016.But whether the Congress will be able to take full advantage of the anti-CAA vote is debatable, given that local forces like the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), for whom the scrapping of the CAA is the central issue, are likely to take away a sizeable chunk. Earlier this month, both the AJP and the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) declared that they would not join the grand alliance against the NDA.The BJP has long averred an unofficial understanding between the Congress and the AIUDF, as the latter had chosen not to field a candidate against Gogoi’s son, Gaurav, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. It will now leverage the tie-up to the fullest, particularly in upper Assam, which comprises seven districts. On the other hand, Assam has a significant minority vote, close to 35 per cent, almost all of which will benefit the grand alliance. It anticipates a minimum of 45 seats on the strength of a combined minority vote. Also to its advantage is the recent trouble between the BJP and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), which led to the former backing the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and the Gana Suraksha Party (GSP) in the BTC.Formerly an ally of the Congress, the BPF tied up with the BJP in 2016 and has 12 seats in the assembly and three cabinet berths. Prior to 2019, Congress leaders in Assam, notably three-term chief minister Tarun Gogoi, had opposed any truck with Ajmal. They argued that the AIUDF was seen as a ‘communal’ party and allying with it could cost the Congress its Hindu vote. Ironically, it was Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, who had quietly lobbied for a ‘mahagathbandhan’style alliance in Assam before the 2016 assembly elections. The BJP and BPF have yet to announce a formal split and the former is clearly banking on the Bodo accord of 2020 and new allies, to secure the crucial Bodo vote. The Congress justifies its tie-ups with right-wing parties - the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara and the AIUDF in Assam.

The demand was subdued as Covid-19 cases were increasing and Covid-19 induced restrictions including quarantine rules

However, from the month of September, 2020 domestic leisure travel has started showing signs of recovery as people who were at first cautious of stepping out of their homes to travel are now willing to do so. The next day, Faruqui’s friend Sadakat Khan was held when he went to meet him in court. And last October, Kappan along with Atiq-Ur-Rahman, Masood Ahmed and Alam was arrested in Mathura while on their way to Hathras, where a 19-year-old Dalit girl had been allegedly gangraped, leading to her death in a Delhi hospital.

Faruqui was booked under IPC Sections 295A (outraging religious feelings) and 269 (unlawful or negligent act likely to spread the infection of any disease dangerous to life) among other charges. Last Friday, the Indore police, after saying it has no evidence regarding the allegations against Faruqui, failed to produce a case diary before the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court at his bail hearing. Still, the case against the comedian now has

six youngsters behind bars for more than a fortnight. Of the six, one is the brother of the show’s organiser who was in the audience, another a friend of Faruqui’s who had nothing to do with the event, and a third whose only family is a minor brother running around for him now. However, from the last quarter of CY21, the occupancy rate is expected to start gaining traction. In addition to the above, restriction on outbound tourism is leading to people exploring destinations within the country. With the easing of travel restrictions, people have started stepping out for weekend getaways and staycations and are also using hotel facilities as their workstations. All these factors in turn will support the recovery of hotels industry.

The occupancy rate across hotels declined on a yearly basis in CY2020 due to Covid-19 outbreak and the consequent ban on foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) which is not expected to be lifted in the near future. In addition to this, the government of India in October, 2020 has permitted visa relaxations for all purposes except for tourism which in turn is expected to further affect the recovery in FTAs. Zoo near ‘Statue of Unity’ is making sure its lone surviving giraffe never misses favourite Acacia meal Agency News: Vadodara A three-year-old female giraffe, the sole survivor of the four shipped from Africa to the Kevadia Zoological park in October 2019 is being fed with acacia leaves fastened to other trees by zoo authorities. The giraffe fodder is brought from a farm run by the forest department, outside the zoological park. The giraffes’ fondness to acacia tress is known, but authorities at the Sardar Patel Zoological Park, near the Statue of Unity is not being able to grow the majestic tree inside the Kevadia safari park, making them bring the required quantity from outside and getting them tied to another tree to give the animal a sense of ‘natural habitat’, reported IE.One giraffe died in November 2019 shortly after it was brought from Africa and another in March last year after suffering from ‘peracute

mortality syndrome’, a condition that affects the species during season change. The third giraffe also died last year leaving only the female giraffe behind and now the authorities are trying, by all means, to make it survive. Every day, close to 20 kilos of acacia leaf branches and twigs are brought to the park for the female giraffe. An officer of the Sardar Patel Zoological Park informed that the forest department has planted few acacia trees inside the park

but was soon grazed by the animals there. The second attempt at planting acacia also failed as the animals would graze the samplings. Acacia trees take three years to get to the height from where giraffes find it comfortable feeding on its leaves. So now they have planted 70 trees outside the park and caters for the daily supply of leaves and branches for the giraffe. The officials attach the leaves to another tall tree so that the giraffe can graze

Gujarat high court stays govt from issuing notification Sunvilla News: Ahmedabad The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday directed the state government not to issue notification under the amended Disturbed Area Act section 3(1)(ii) & (iii) until the next date of hearing on February 3, 2021. The division bench of Gujarat High Court headed by Chief Justice Vikramnath has issued a notice to the state government in the matter. The petitioner challenged several provisions of the Disturbed Area (Amendment) Act stating that it formalizes ghettoization and opposes pluralism which is against the Constitution. The petition filed through advocate Muhammad Isa Hakim submitted that due to identity-based segregation, the amended Act violates the foundational constitutional values of fraternity, tolerance,

brotherhood, pluralism, and secularism. The amended Act is grossly unconstitutional as it seeks to achieve segregation of communities based on the traits of residents of a particular geographical area. The 1991 Act through amendment has been misused as a tool to discriminate against minorities and prevent them from purchasing a property in non-muslims areas, resulting in the creation of religious ghettoes such as Juhapura in Ahmedabad. The Act empowers collectors to

reject applications seeking permission to transfer immovable property in favour of religious minorities in predominantly majority areas. The act furthers religious ghettos and subverts ‘secularism’, the petitioner said. The concept of “proper clustering of one community” and its usage in Sections 3, 5, and 16A of the Act effectuates segregation of citizens on grounds of community, religion, race, or any other uncommon aspect of identity, thereby perpetuating the creation of ghettos or enclaves in the state. The petition further said that the Act violates the dignity of individuals especially those belonging to the minority community. It is a frontal attack on the diversity, the composite culture, and the multiculturalism of the country, the petition said.

Indian real estate witness private equity investments of USD 4,068 million in 2020: Knight Frank India Agency News: Mumbai

Knight Frank India, leading property consultancy, said that India attracted private equity investments to the tune of USD 38,149 million in the calendar year 2020. Of the total PE investment, the real estate sector claimed 11% share in 2020 with USD 4,068 million, closing 21 deals during the year. The share of office and warehousing PE investments have jumped remarkably over the last decade from 24% in 2011 to 62% in 2020 and 6% to 24% during the same period respectively. Since 2011, the segment has garnered USD 16,213 mn of equity

investments, and during 2020, the segment transacted seven deals amounting to USD 2,509 million. Around 21.8 mn sq ft of the office assets were transacted in 2020. The PE investments through equity route in this space were down 19% YoY in 2020 compared to USD 3,096 mn during the same period last year.In terms of investor origin split, The United States of America leads the chart with USD 6,709 mn investment claiming 26 deals since 2011, followed by Singapore with USD 5,225 mn and Canada with USD 2,082 mn.In 10 years, Jan 2011 – December 2020, Mumbai took the largest quantum of office

investment worth USD 5,288 mn followed by the National Capital Region (NCR) with USD 2,803 mn and Hyderabad with USD 2,160 mn.i n 2020, the warehousing sector attracted PE investments through equity route worth USD 971 mn which were 49% YoY lower than USD 1,895 mn during the same period last year. This drop can largely be attributed to a significant percentage of capital committed to the warehousing sector in India over the past three years awaiting deployment. Since 2011 – 2020, Singapore has the largest share of investment of USD 2,524 mn in the warehousing

sector, followed by UAE with USD 1,600 mn and Germany with USD 1,000 mn. In 2020, the residential sector witnessed seven deals worth USD 368 million, which were down 49% YoY compared to USD 717 million in 2019. For several years residential prices have been stagnant and have even corrected at specific locations. Though overall PE investment (Debt and equity) in residential has come down in the past 4 years, investors’ risk appetite in residential has gone up as the share of equity investments has grown from 35% in 2019 to 52% in 2020 Since 2011, the retail space has attracted USD

2,792 mn equity investments, claiming total of 25 deals as of 2020. There were only two deals transacted for USD 220 mn in retail space in 2020 which is a drop of 76% YoY compared to USD 922 mn in 2019. The pandemic-induced lockdown had forced all malls to halt their operations and has adversely affected their businesses. Malls have been amongst the last to open during the unlocking phases and the fear of virus has kept the consumer footfalls low. Such high levels of uncertainty have kept investors away from retail assets. Around 2.7 mn sq ft of the retail space was transacted in 2020.
