IND vs NZ 2nd ODI : India wins against New Zealand, take 2-0 lead

India’s relentless pace attack ran through a fragile New Zealand batting line-up as the hosts cantered to an eight-wicket win in the second ODI to seal the three-match series here on Saturday. The Mohammed Shami-led attack produced an incisive effort to bowl out New Zealand for a meagre 108 before India knocked off the runs in 20.1 overs. Rohit Sharma hit a sublime 50 off 51 balls while Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 40 off 53 deliveries. It was an emphatic win but the sea of fans that had flocked the remotely located Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium for Raipur’s first international game was left wanting for more due to the early finish. Shami (3/18) and Mohammed Siraj (1/10) made life tough for the batters with their highquality seam bowling reducing New Zealand to a dismal 15 for five after Rohit opted to bowl. The odd ball stopping made the New Zealand

batters’ job tougher though the Indian openers made batting look easy in the evening. New Zealand were in dire straits but all hope was not lost with last match’s centurion Michael Bracewell (22) and the equally dangerous Glenn Phillips (36) in the middle. Bracewell made his intent clear by stepping out to whack Shami over cover. After getting hit for consecutive fours

In a letter to Saxena, Sisodia said the LG’s letter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday was written with a political motive and his “false allegations” against the education department were an “insult” to the students and teachers of Delhi. ”The LG wrote the letter with a

political motive and said that no work has been done in the Education Department of Delhi. His allegations are an insult to the students and teachers of Delhi. I am requesting the LG not to mock the work of our teachers, who have done wonders in the department,” Sisodia, who also holds the education portfolio, wrote to Saxena. in the 19th over, Shami bowled a sharp bouncer and Bracewell went for the pull only to edge it back to the keeper. Mitchell Santner (27), who scored a fifty in Hyderabad, joined Phillips and the duo took the team past 100 with a 47-run stand for the seventh wicket. However, both were dismissed in a space of six balls to end New Zealand’s hopes of a recovery.

Agency News: Jamshedpur

Human rights outfit, People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) Jharkhand unit, has petitioned state chief secretary for rehabilitation and compensation of occupants whose houses were “demolished by Ranchi railway” last month, rendering most of them homeless in the extreme winter. PUCL Ranchi general secretary Shashi Sagar Verma has written to chief secretary Sukhdev Singh on Wednesday informing him about the demolition of 40 houses in the Lohra Kocha Basti (an urban slum) near Kadru Overbridge on December 28. “A team of 22 RPF personnel from the Ranchi railway division of South Eastern Railways demolished around 40 houses in Lohra Kocha Basti. It is pertinent to note that the residents of these 40 households, the majority of them belong to Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes. The affected population are daily wage earners and since the demolition, many of them have not been able to go back to work and have been rendered homeless,” the letter states.

Netaji was leftist, BJP and RSS ideology don’t reflect his attitude: Anita Bose Pfaff

Agency News: Calcutta

Amidst the fanfare over RSS’ plans to celebrate Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary in the city on January 23, his daughter Anita Bose-Pfaff has said that the organisation’s ideology and the nationalist leader’s ideas of secularism and inclusiveness are “poles apart and do not coincide”. She agreed that the fanfare over the celebration of her father’s birth anniversary is to “partially serve their (BJP, RSS) own interests”. As far as ideology is concerned, the Congress has a lot more in common with Netaji than any other party in the country, she said. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat will address a public programme at Shahid Minar ground in the city to commemorate Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary. BJP and RSS do not reflect the idea of respecting all

religions as preached by Netaji, who was a devout Hindu but believed in respecting other faiths. He was in favour of productive cooperation between members of different religions, Bose-Pfaff said. “The RSS and BJP do not necessarily reflect this attitude ... If you want to put a simple label, they are rightists and Netaji was a leftist,” she told ver phone from Germany where she lives. “From what I hear about the RSS ideology, I would agree that it and Netaji’s ideology are poles apart. The two value systems do not coincide. It will certainly be good if the RSS felt it wanted to embrace Netaji’s ideals and ideas.

News:

A group of 302 former judges, ex-bureaucrats and veterans on Saturday slammed a BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “motivated charge sheet against our leader, a fellow Indian and a patriot” and a reflection of its “dyed-in-thewool negativity and unrelenting prejudice”. They claimed it is the archetype of past British imperialism in India setting itself up as both judge and jury to resurrect Hindu-Muslim tensions that were overwhelmingly the creation of the British Raj policy of divide and rule. The twopart BBC documentary “India: The Modi Question” claims it investigated certain aspects relating to the 2002 Gujarat riots when Modi was the chief minister of the state. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued directions for blocking

multiple YouTube videos and Twitter posts sharing links to the BBC documentary, according to sources. This documentary is not a neutral critique and is not about exercising creative freedom or a divergent, anti-establishment point of view, a statement signed by 13 former judges, 133 exbureaucrats, including diplomats, and 156 veterans said. “Not only is the BBC series, judging from what we have seen of it so far, based on delusional and evidently lopsided reporting, but it presumes to question the very basis of the 75-year-old edifice of India’s existence as an independent, democratic nation, a nation which functions according to the will of the people of India,” it said.

Pakistan PM is aiming for Peace Prize, not peace talk. India has seen this olive branch before Pakistan, the habitual offender, has once again extended an olive branch to India and expressed its desire for peace talks. It is a déjà vu moment for New Delhi. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recalled multiple wars with India and lamented that “conflicts brought nothing good to any side but misery and poverty”. Sounding more like a peacenik ready to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, he even prophesied as to ‘who will live to tell what happened, if God forbid a battle starts, as both sides are nuclear powers’. New Delhi is certainly not amused yet silently watching as the economic situation in Pakistan turns from bad to worse. This is not the first time that a Pakistani prime minister is extending the hand of friendship towards India. The country’s political leaders as well as the generals in the Pakistan Army, who are the real rulers in Islamabad, have routinely called for friendly relations between the two neighbours and an end to hostilities. But every such pro-peace statement is invariably followed by a rider to “settle the long-pending issue of Kashmir”. The generals on their part will not forget to punctuate their peace calls with a warning that the Pakistan Army is capable of giving a fitting reply to the Indian Army in the battlefield, whatever that means. Sometime in January last year, then-army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa had pontificated that Pakistan is committed to the idea of mutual respect and peaceful co-existence and it is time to extend a hand of peace in all directions. Interestingly, this peace advice came from a general who had spewed venom against India after the aerial strikes at the terror training camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in 2019 after the Pulwama attack. Even Shebaz Sharif’s olive branch to New Delhi comes with a rider asking his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi to ‘resolve Kashmir and other issues through dialogue’. What the other issues are is obviously not explained.

Hours after sports minister Anurag Thakur said Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh will “step aside from day-to-day activity” as WFI president for four weeks owing to an inquiry, the BJP MP occupied pride of place at a national-level wrestling event in Gonda on Saturday. The wrestling body said Singh was “neither suspended not terminated”. Singh was welcomed as the “chief guest” during the inauguration of the three-day Senior National Open Ranking Wrestling Tournament organised by Indian Wrestling Association at Gonda, with posters at the venue prominently carrying his picture. Making a grand entry, he was heard saying he was there to “get wrestling done” and sat on the stage. He was addressed as the president of Wrestling Federation of India and a BJP MP from the stage, and he even tagged the sports minister in pictures of the event that he posted on

Facebook. Singh has called an annual general meeting of WFI in Ayodhya from Monday. A senior central government functionary told that the wrestling body chief should have avoided chairing the event in Gonda, while Vinod Tomar, assistant secretary of WFI, said Singh was a president who was neither a suspended president nor a terminated one. “He is still the president… who is relinquishing his duties until the probe is completed,” Tomar said. “He will come to the AGM to inform delegates about his decision to abstain from work due to the inquiry.” He added that Singh will not be chairing the WFI AGM and not be a signatory, and will not sign any cheques or certificates. “Till late evening today, met thousands of female and male players from many states including Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, SSB, UP and congratulated them for their efficient and future success,”

Indian pharma firm Lupin pulls back 16,000 bottles of TB drug from US markets over manufacturing defects

Agency News : New Delhi

India-made cough syrups causing deaths in Africa and Uzbekistan, and the USFDA’s action against Sun Pharma over lapses at its Halol plant, have badly affected the image of Indian drugmakers. Although an antitrust lawsuit against Dr Reddy’s was dismissed by a US court, another Indian pharma major has been forced to pull back its drugs from American markets. Indian pharma major Lupin has recalled more than 16,000 bottles of its tuberculosis drug Rifampin over possible side effects. The

firm failed to specify impurities, which are supposed to be spotted during substance testing for long term stability. The batch pulled down from drug store shelves, was manufactured at Lupin’s Aurangabad unit. The Class II nationwide recall was initiated on December 12 last year, as it is required when a violative product poses the risk of temporary adverse health effects which are medically reversible, and chances of serious consequences are negligible.

Royalty hike hits f Hindustan Unilever Ltd

Agency News : New Delhi

Shares of Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) on Friday cracked nearly 4 per cent as investors feared the higher royalty to its parent could crimp its margins.

The HUL share ended 3.84 per cent lower at Rs 2,548.35 on the BSE after dropping to an intraday low of Rs 2,536.65 — a fall of almost 4.30 per cent. While HUL was the top loser in the Sensex pack, it declined 3.76 per cent to end at Rs 2,550 on the NSE.

The company’s market valuation eroded Rs 23,941.91 crore to Rs 5.98 lakh crore on the BSE.

On Thursday, HUL announced its board has approved a new royalty and central services arrangement with Unilever Group. The payouts will increase 80 basis points to 3.45 per cent of turnover. Market circles said they feared the higher payment could impact its margins. The company

said they would implement the hikes in a staggered manner over a period of three years. “In the absence of meaningful margin expansion beyond 2023-24, sales and PAT (profit after tax) growth will move in tandem which will prevent meaningful re-rating of the stock.. HUL royalty will impact EPS by Rs 1.1 and Rs 1.7 for 2023-24/202425’’ Prabhudas Lilladher said. A Motilal Oswal report said that despite the increase in royalty from 2.65 per cent to 3.45 per cent, it is not ``particularly perturbed’’ if the company receives commensurate benefits from the parent. The brokerage said HUL continued to exhibit remarkable dexterity, led by a cluster-based approach. It has maintained a buy rating on the stock with a target price of Rs 3,100 which denotes an upside of almost 22 per cent from the current levels.

Manushi Chhillar has been the toast of town with her chic fashion choices. The actress has belted out look after look that has captivated the imagination of her fans. Opening up about her fashion sense, Manushi says, “Fashion to me is about expression. I feel that there is a lot of creativity and it says a lot about a person. It is something that I really enjoy. I have always enjoyed and I have always admired the people who have a personal sense of style and express it through fashion. I try to do the same in life.” She adds, “For me it is about the creativity involved, and it is about expressing yourself visually through the clothes that you wear and the look that you do. I think it is sweet if people are thinking that I’m trail-blazing in fashion. But for me, it has always been something that I have enjoyed and aspired to do.” Manushi spills the beans on what got her into fashion. “Since childhood, I followed what supermodels were doing internationally. What trends were being followed. What everyone’s sense of style was. And for me today, having that freedom and accessibility is a blessing because I know that I absolutely enjoy it and I try my best to be as authentic and as honest as possible when it comes to expressing myself through fashion.“Manushi loves to wear Indian clothes and feels a sense of pride in India’s contribution to the world when it comes to fashion and trends. “India has a long-standing history when it comes to fashion. Whether you talk about the textile or the handloom industry or even the fact that you travel from North to South or from East to West, they are traditionally, apart from wearing what was culturally necessary, there has been a certain fashion influence that the people and the society has had,” she avers. The actress admires the late Maharani Gayatri Devi’s style. “If we look at style icons that we have had, we can go back to individuals like Maharani Gayatri Devi. She followed and set her own trends and fashion. So, India has a long history when it comes to fashion. We also have a lot of designers and it is great to see today that not just weddings, but there are designers that are there – street-style labels that are coming up and getting recognition internationally,” she explains. On a parting note, Manushi concludes, “There are small-time designers who are now getting that recognition and now making it big through traditional techniques of textile making. And it is great to see this whole blend in India of what we traditionally followed and the methods that we traditionally had with a very contemporary and a modern taste and aesthetic. It’s great to see that.”
