The nautanki of Arvind Kejriwal: Enough is enough, he has only exposed himself Agency : New Delhi Self-confessed Bollywood fan Arvind Kejriwal doesn’t look like Sunny Deol. But he has pulled off an act inspired by Deol’s character in Damini. In that film, Deol tells Amrish Puri that he will dispense justice on the spot. No hearing, no witness, no argument; only insaaf, woh bhi tabadtod, he promises before ominously telling his adversary, “Judge order, order karta rahega, aur tu pit ta rahega.” On Monday night, in the theatre of absurd that passes off as Kejriwal’s AAP, the case of Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan was settled exactly the way Deol prescribed: instantaneously (tabadtod), without a perfunctory trial or regard for basic principles of justice. The duo was spared a thrashing, primarily because that part of Kejriwal’s justice system had already been attempted at the stormy national council meeting in

March. “Ideally we can approach the court against all that they did. The reconstitution of the national disciplinary commmittee, the removal of Admiral Ramdas as the party Lokpal – everything was illegal. The question is why should we spend our energy in court?”

Bhushan said, simultaneously summing and giving up.

Saudi airstrikes pound Yemen’s Shiite rebels, killing 20 Agency : Sanaa The Saudi-led coalition pounded Shiite rebels in Yemen on Monday, killing 20 in a city in the country’s west as the civilian death toll rose to 38 from airstrikes the day before in the capital, Sanaa, officials said. The US backed campaign by Saudi Arabia and its allies, mainly Gulf Arab countries, is aimed at crushing the rebels, known as Houthis, who have taken over Sanaa and areas in northern Yemen and have been pressing an offensive to expand their gains in the rest of the country, including the

Political intervention in bureaucracy is necessary in democracy: PM Modi Agency : New Delhi Asserting that "political intervention" is necessary in a democracy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made it clear to bureaucrats not to view this as a hindrance for good governance. Drawing a distinction between political interference and intervention, he said while the former will "destroy" the system the latter is "necessary" and "inevitable". Addressing civil servants, the Prime Minister said bureaucratic temperament and political interference are often talked about as ob-

Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi 'seriously wounded in air strike' Agency : New Delhi The leader of Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, has been seriously wounded in an air strike in western Iraq, sources have told the Guardian. A source in Iraq with connections to the terror group revealed that Baghdadi suffered serious injuries during an attack by the US-led coalition in March. The source said Baghdadi’s wounds were at first life-threatening, but he has since made a slow recovery. He has not, however, resumed day-to-day control of the organisation. Baghdadi’s wounding led to urgent meetings of IS leaders, who initially believed he would die and made plans to name a new leader. Two separate officials – a western diplomat and an Iraqi adviser – separately con-

firmed the strike took place on 18 March in the al-Baaj a district of Nineveh, close to the Syrian border. There had been two previous reports in November and December of Baghdadi being wounded, though neither was accurate. The diplomat confirmed an air strike on a three-car convoy had taken place on that date between the village of Umm al-Rous and al-Qaraan. The attack targeted local Isis leaders and is believed to have killed three men. Officials did not

know at the time that Baghdadi was in one of the cars. Hisham al-Hashimi, an Iraqi official who advises Baghdad on Isis, told the Guardian: “Yes, he was wounded in al-Baaj near the village of Umm al-Rous on 18 March with a group that was with him.” Baghdadi is understood to have been spending much of his time in al-Baaj, about 200 miles west of the Isis stronghold of Mosul. It was the one part of Iraq that they hadn’t mapped out.”

Government drops Indira, Rajiv Gandhi's name from two awards The BJP-led NDA government has dropped the names of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi from two awards for propagating Hindi. The two awards have been discontinued by the Home Ministry and instead launched two new schemes for doing outstanding work for promoting the progressive use of official language. According to a Home Ministry order, the 'Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Puraskar' and 'Rajiv Gandhi Rashtriya GyanVigyan Maulik Pustak Lekhan Puraskar', launched more than two decades ago, have given away for 'Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar' and 'Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar'. Home Ministry officials have denied that the earlier two awards, named after two former Prime Ministers belonging to Congress party, have been changed due to political consideration by the BJP-led NDA government. "It is purely an administrative decision to make the awards more useful," an official said. Earlier, there were four categories of Rajbhasha awards of which two were named after the two former Prime Ministers. The four awards were merged into two now. Under the 'Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar Scheme', awards will be given to any citizen of India for writing original book in Hindi on knowledge and science based subjects, to central government employees (including retired one) for writing original book in Hindi and to Central Government Employees (including retired one) for writing excellent article in Hindi. 'Rajbhasa Kirti Puraskar' will be given for outstanding work in promoting the progressive use of official language to Ministries, Departments, Public Sector Undertakings, banks and in-house Hindi magazines.

Emraan Hashmi's 'Mr X' fails to create magic at box office

Immune system regulates sensitivity to bitter taste Agency : New York New research reveals that an immune system regulatory protein that promotes inflammation also helps regulate sensitivity to bitter taste. Reduced food intake and associated malnutrition is a significant concern that affects the long-term prognosis of many people, who are very ill. "Our findings reveal that bitter taste is regulated by the immune system. Specifically, the tumour necrosis factor (TNF) protein may make sick people more sensitive to bitterness, so that foods taste more bitter and less appetizing," said senior author Hong Wang, molecular biologist at Monell Chemi-

the film revolves around a cop who is bestowed with powers of 'invisibility' after an unfortunate accident. The film has received mixed re-

It collected Rs 4.50 crores on Friday, Rs 4.39 crores on Saturday, Rs 5.10 crores on Sunday and Rs 2.50 crores on Monday. The total collection now amounts to Rs 16.49 crores. Break the stereotype, learn to live, urges Kalki Agency : Mumbai The video portrays how we stereotype people according to their looks, appearance and dressing without knowing a thing about them. It shows a beefed up, intimidating looking man with tattoos and pierced all over, reaching out to help an elderly woman cross the road. Then there is a young girl on the plump side coming out of a food joint with packets of burgers. Her size and the large food packets has passersby jumping to obvious conclusions. But the preconceived notion is put to rest when she feeds the hungry by the roadside. There is also a young, modern girl on a motorbike, who stops to pray in front of a temple. Kalki then makes an appearance sipping on a margarita with a straw, appealing that it is time we stop judging people. Says Kalki, who plays a cerebral palsyaffected girl in the film, "The video is a lovely initiative, it focus es on the philosophy of the film which is about self-acceptance and not

making judgment about others who are different from us. It is about learning to live life." Further explaining its relevance to the film, the actress says, "My character, Laila is as different as it gets. She is wheel-chair bound in the midst of insen-

sitive people and is stared at all the time. She struggles to fit in and get acceptance from the society. She too judges people, makes mistakes and eventually learns to look within and embraces life. That is when she is able to love others."

Salman Khan hit-and-run case: court to deliver verdict on May 6

TPFC and SIAA reiterated that artists should “adhere to the agreements that they enter into and producers should not suffer losses due to their irresponsible acts.” A case of cheating was registered against Shruti last month for allegedly reneging on the contractual obligations and pulling out of an upcoming bilingual film. The

case seeking criminal investigation against her was filed by Picture House Media Ltd which alleged that the actor missed her shooting schedules for the untitled multi-starrer being directed by Vamsi Paidipalli. Shruti, daughter of actor couple Kamal Haasan and Sarika, has acted in a number of Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films.

Agency : Mumbai The Sessions Court on Tuesday said it would deliver judgment on May 6 in the 2002 hit-and-run case against actor Salman Khan. One person was killed and four were injured after Salman's SUV ran over the stairs of the American Express Laundry in the intervening night of September 27 and 28, 2002. "On May 6 at 11.15 sharp," Judge D.W. Deshpande said in a packed court room. Later, he placed on record his appreciation of the prosecution and defence lawyers for their co-operation during the trial. He had proposed May 5 for

the verdict, but Special Public Prosecutor Pradeep Gharat cited some important personal commitment. Thereafter, the judge posted the judgment for May 6. Till now, 27 witnesses have been examined by the prosecution. One of them, Sachin Kadam, was declared hostile after he backtracked, saying he did not see the actor at the accident spot. In his deposition be-

fore the Sessions Court in June last, he said: "It is not correct that I had seen the incident, and I also saw Salman Khan getting down from the car." Kadam was working as a security guard at Hotel Neelsagar, a restaurant opposite the accident spot. The other prosecution witnesses told the court that the accident was caused by Salman's car, and that they saw him get out of the driver's seat. A witness told the court that Salman was so drunk that he fell down twice after getting down from the car before running away from the spot.

Agency : New York

ow you can opt to receive direct messages from other users on Twitter even if you are not following them. Previously, in order to receive a direct message from another person, you had to follow that user on Twitter. For some public figures, and especially for journalists, that restriction made it difficult to communicate more privately. Twitter had first experimented with this setting in 2013 with a select user base. But it was not made public. But now any Twitter-user can turn this option for themselves if they choose, TechCrunch reported. Related to this change, the company is also updating its messaging rules

so that you can reply to incoming direct messages regardless of whether that person follows you in return. And to better highlight the newly-added option, Twitter says that a new Direct Message button will appear on profile pages on both Android and iPhone. This button will only appear on the profiles of people you can send direct messages to, making it more obvious with a glance who has turned the feature on already.

Wipro promotes Premji heir apparent to board

Agency : Bangalore

W

ipro Ltd, India's thirdbiggest software services exporter, has appointed the son of billionaire founder Azim Premji to its board, in a long awaited promotion that moves the chairman's heir apparent closer to the top spot. Rishad Premji, eldest son and a Harvard Business School graduate, was already Wipro's chief strategy officer. He joins the board from May 1. The appointment was announced on Tuesday alongside Wipro's fourth-quarter earnings and a modest 2 percent rise in profit. That beat expectations of a slight dip, thanks to a rise in its Western clients' technology spending. Wipro founder Azim Premji took over his own father's ailing vegetable oil business in the mid-1960s. He diversified into making hydraulic

cylinders in the 1970s and struck out into information technology in 1980. "There is nothing much to be read into this other than the fact he is really representing shareholders' interest," Wipro's Chief Executive Officer T.K. Kurien told reporters, when asked about Rishad's elevation to the board. For its fourth quarter ended March 31, Wipro's net profit rose to 22.72 billion rupees ($361.38 million), compared with 22.27 billion rupees in the same period the previous year, the company said in a statement. Analysts, on average, had expected Wipro to report a profit of 21.8 billion rupees, according to Thomson Reuters data. Total revenue rose to 121.4 billion rupees in the quarter, a rise of 4 percent over last year, as the company added 65 new clients.

old prices fell by Rs 100 to close at Rs 27,100 per 10 grams at the bullion market on Tuesday as the auspicious 'Akshaya Tritiya' festival failed to generate any substantial buying activity for the precious metal amid a weak global trend. Silver also dropped Rs 560 to Rs 36,440 per kg on reduced offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Traders said apart from a weak trend in overseas markets as investors weighed a rally in equities and the dollar in the absence of any significant buying by jewellers, led to decline in gold prices. Globally, gold in Singapore, which normally sets price trend on the domestic front,

fell by 0.3 per cent to $1,192.29 an ounce. They said, however, token retail purchase on auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya limited the fall in the prices of the precious metals. Akshaya Tritiya is considered to be an auspicious day to make token purchases of gold ornaments, jewellery, gold coins and other gold items. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity fell by Rs 100 each to Rs 27,100 and Rs 26,950 per 10 grams, respectively. It had gained Rs 125 yesterday. Meanwhile, last year on 'Akshaya Tritiya', gold traded at Rs 30,390 per 10 grams. The Sovereign, however, remained flat at Rs 23,700 per piece of eight grams in limited deals.

The Singaporean tried to make a comeback but Kashyap held his fort comfortably till the end. “I was able to control the speed of the game better than him to-

Pakistan set to host Zimbabwe on 'real home' in May

Agency : Mumbai Pakistan are poised to host top-level international cricket for the first time in six years with a short limited-overs series against Zimbabwe next month. Pakistan has been forced to play designated 'home' matches in the United Arab Emirates since March 2009 following an attack by militants on a Sri Lanka team

bus in Lahore. However, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) president Shaharyar Khan said he was assured of the tour by Zimbabwe counterpart Wilson Manase on the sidelines of an International Cricket Council meeting in Dubai last week. "He (Manase) told me they are coming and they are coming with their full team, but for a week," Khan told

reporters in Lahore. "They will send a security team to assess the situation, following which they will confirm the tour. "So they will come in middle of May and our efforts will be to host matches in Lahore and Karachi." The matches would have international status and the ICC had also granted Pakistan special dispensation to use local umpires to officiate in them, PCB chief operating officer Subhan Ahmad added. The Sri Lankans were ambushed while travelling from their hotel to the Gaddafi stadium for a test match, in an attack that left six Pakistani policemen and a van driver dead while some players and a local umpire sustained injuries. Afghanistan played a couple of low-profile series in the country in the period following the attack while Kenya completed a fivematch one-day series against a Pakistan A side in December.

Ola becomes official Cab partner for 5 IPL teams Agency : Bangalore Ola, India’s most popular mobile app for personal transportation and on-demand consumption today announced that it is now the ‘Official Cab Partner’for five Indian Premier League 2015 (IPL 2015) teams - Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab. Ola is also offering fans in Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Hyderabad and Vishakhapatnam, a chance to win free tickets to watch IPL matches in their cities. The IPL icon in the Ola app appears on match days between 11am and 2pm. Customers can hit the icon (just like they do to book a cab), and get free tickets to go and watch their favorite teams.

Agency : Visakhapatnam Their morale on the upswing after back-to-back victories, defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders will aim to continue the winning run when they take on the inconsistent Sunrisers Hyderabad in their fifth IPL match on Wednesday. The Gautam Gambhir-led KKR's most recent win came last night against the Delhi Daredevils, a result which took them to fourth position in the points table with three wins and just one loss so far. Hyderabad, on the other hand, lost to Delhi in their previous encounter

and are currently lying sixth on the table with three losses and merely a win as yet. The defeat against Delhi was morale-crushing to say the least given that Hyderabad fell short by mere four runs. Considering the situation in which the team is currently in, the think-tank has much to sort in a line-up which relies heavily on foreign imports as far as impact players are concerned. Their batting seems fragile if the opening duo of skipper David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan fails to give a good start. In fact, even that

wasn't enough in their previous match against Delhi where the middle order let the side down. Hyderabad's bowling is spearheaded by South African star Dale Steyn and a lot would depend on what he can extract from his four overs along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar. KKR, meanwhile, have been performing quite well and in the previous match, it was the bowling which did the job for the title-holders. The pace duo of Umesh Yadav and Morne Morkel combined well to restrict Delhi and made the job easy for the team's batsmen.

IPL 8: Desperate Kings XI face stern test against rampant Royals Agency : Ahmedabad A struggling Kings XI Punjab will have to pull out all stops against the sole unbeaten side, Rajasthan Royals, when the two teams clash in an Indian Premier League match in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. Rajasthan Royals has successfully dealt with all the challenges thrown at them in the five games they have played so far. Four of those wins have come while chasing, with the one on Sunday against a consistent outfit like Chennai Super Kings, being the most convincing. They made a mockery of the 157-run target as openers Ajinkya Rahane and Shane Watson shared a blazing 144-run stand off 97 balls. The Kings XI Punjab will have to find a way to stop the solid Rahane, who

has been the tournament’s leading scorer with 231 runs at an average of 57.75. That there has not been a standout effort with the ball goes to show the Royals are clicking well again as a unit. Legspinner Pravin Tambe has been their most successful bowler with five wickets from as many games at 23 and a decent economy rate of 6.76. While Kings XI

Punjab has a put up a reasonable bowling effort so far, it is their famed batting that has let them down. The last year’s runners-up have had an ordinary start this season, with only a win to show from four games. What is making it tough for them is that the dangerous opening pair of Virender Sehwag and Murali Vijay has not been able to build on starts.

IPL 8: Dhoni reveals CSK's success mantra Fans also stand a chance to win hospitality tickets by participating in contests on Twitter using #OlaMatchDay by tweeting to @Olacabs. “IPL is one of the biggest sporting extravaganzas in the country and we are proud to be associated with its franchises as their ‘official cab partners’. Cricket in India cuts across all demographic barriers and connects masses. With this association, we aim to bring our customers a step closer to their favorite teams” said Sudarshan Gangrade, Vice

President - Marketing & Alliances at Ola. Fraser Castellino, Chief Operating Officer, Kings XI Punjab commented saying, "Kings XI has always endeavored to ensure that our fans have a great match day experience. Getting to and from the stadium in a relaxed and efficient manner is part of that over all experience and we are delighted to welcome Ola on board as our Official Cab Partner who will strive to deliver the service to ours fans."

Agency : Bengaluru Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today said the camaraderie between the young and the senior players was key to the consistent good show of his side in the IPL. "The reason for CSK's consistency has been the gelling of young and senior cricket players with he help of support staff," Dhoni said in a "meet and Greet' event organised by UST Global, a leading IT services and solutions provider, which is also principal sponsor of CSK. An-

swering to a query that not many youngsters are coming out from CSK compared to other IPL teams, Dhoni said it is difficult to drop senior players to accommodate youngsters, but CSK has given some good youngsters who are repre-

senting India. "We had Jadeja coming in as a youngster. We also had Ishwar Pandey, Mohit Sharma, who is playing for India. We also had Pawan Negi. We have young pool of players but we cannot make senior players like Brendon McCullum to sit outside - it is always a difficult choice," he said. Dhoni further said to have senior players like Suresh Raina and Mike Hussey in the side is beneficial for youngsters as they learn many tricks of the trade.

It is similar to creating sun-like energy inside a laboratory, he said. The plasma is confined and given heat inside ‘Steady State Super Conducting Tokamak (SST-1)’. The most important source of energy for our earth is the sun which is a perfect spherical ball of hot plasma, the fourth state of matter, with internal convective motion and generates a magnetic field like a

dynamo process. Similar to that, the scientists at IPR, located on the outskirts of the city, have conducted a fusion experiment with a device named Tokamak and got a breakthrough in confining plasma which gives a hope to create a sun-like energy in near future. “A microwave current is passed to keep the plasma hot and to confine it inside a Tokamak. A current of the order of 70,000 amperes is passed and plasma is heated to 200 to 300 million degrees. In such process, plasma gets confined inside it (device) and through that heat energy can be generated,” Bora said. “We would like to heat plasma further, then we will be able to confine it for longer period of time. This heat can be ex-

tracted in the form of energy and can be connected to turbines,” said Bora. Confining plasma is necessary for creating such an environment to simulate conditions for fusion reactions, similar to which takes place inside the sun, he said. According to Bora, about 5,000 MW of thermal energy can be produced by using just 50 MW of electricity. The IPR has been running such experiments for around 25 years with the contribution from nearly 50 scientists. The IPR is an autonomous physics research institute. It is involved in research in aspects of plasma science, including basic plasma physics, research on magnetically confined hot plasmas and plasma technologies for industrial applications.

On Akshay Tritiya, govt officials on toes to avert child marriages Correspondent, Vadodara

The festival of Akshay Tritiya is traditionally associated with the purchase of the yellow metal. But, not everything about Akshay Tritiya (Akha Teej) is glitter. As part of the age-old customs, the day witnesses many child marriages, predominantly in rural areas. District administrations are keeping vigil to ensure that the social evil of child marriage is kept at bay this year. Child Protection Departments and Social Defence

officers of districts in central Gujarat are closely watching the wedding venues for the next few days to prevent possible child marriages. While Narmada Collector Sandip Sagale has instructed the Child Welfare and Protection Department to form a unit to avert any possible child marriages, in Anand and Vadodara too, district officers are on the look out for any tip-offs related to child marriages in the next few days. Sagale said, “I have asked my Child Pro-

tection officers to be alert in cases related to children — be it bonded labour or child marriages. Not just for these two days but for the entire year. We held a meeting recently, in which we have formed units to ensure that not a single child is subjected to any unjust practice in the district.” On March 14, the Child Protection Unit of Narmada District had averted the marriage of a 14year-old girl after warning her parents that a criminal case would be registered against

them for forcefully marrying off the minor daughter. An officer of the department said that with help of social activists and NGOs, the unit was networking in the impoverished tribal belt of the area to ensure that no child marriage was performed in the coming auspicious days. In Narmada, where mass marriages are expected in the next two days, officers are ensuring that the background and age of the brides taking part in the ceremonies are verified.

Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel today accused Congress of shedding crocodile tears for farmers’ problems, saying if the party had interests of farmers in its heart, it would have given a speedy approval to the additional construction at the Narmada Dam project. Patel was speaking at a function at Modasa in Arravali district where she inaugurated 11th Krishi Mohatsav of the state government. “If it (Congressled UPA government) had interest of farmers in its heart, it would have given

approval for the Narmada Dam project in 2007 itself,” Patel said. “But it did not do that. Otherwise the construction of the dam would have been complete by now, and the farmers of Gujarat would have started receiving benefits of irrigation,” Patel told a huge gathering of farmers. Only after the Narendra Modi government came to power at the Centre the further construction, to raise the height of the dam from 121.92 meters to 138 meters, was approved, and it would take three years to complete it, she said. Patel assured the farmers that her

government would not take away their lands forcibly, and the acquisition would be only for the good cause of development. In the annual Krishi Mahotsav, officials and experts go to villages and tell farmers about new techniques of farming before the sowing season starts. “It was due to the Krishi Mahotsav that agricultural growth rate has reached a double digit in Gujarat,” Patel claimed. The state government planned to give special attention to organic farming and drip irrigation to increase the yield, Patel added.

Vibrant effect: 2 months, 9.6L fliers Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

Introduction of newer routes, Vibrant Gujarat Summit (VGS) 2015, NRI movement during Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PBD), PlastIndia 2015 and festival season led to a record passenger movement at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in the first two months of 2015. For the first time, more than 5 lakh passengers flew in and out of city airport in January, with international movement up by 16% and domestic movement up by 23% in comparison to the last year. According to the latest data, in January 2015, 5.02 lakh passengers flew in and out of city airport including 3.77 lakh domestic passengers and 1.24 lakh international passengers compared to 4.13

lakh in January last year. Similarly, in February 2015, 4.59 lakh passenger movement was recorded at city airport including 3.51 lakh domestic and 1.08 lakh international passengers compared to 3.93 lakh passengers in February last year. "The New Year break begins in the UK and the US from Christmas itself and also Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas was being held in Gujarat for the first time which resulted in higher movements. Many foreign delegations were in the city in large numbers for VGS 2015," said an Airports Authority of India (AAI) official. It is to be noted that to accommodate participants of PBD and VGS, Air India and Jet Airways operated 12 additional flights to and from

Delhi and Mumbai during the first fortnight of January 2015. "The international traffic at Ahmedabad airport recorded a growth of around 10% last year and is expected to grow by 15% in the current year," said R K Singh, airport director. Tour operators believe that with the economic conditions improving, more and more people opted for foreign destinations for holidays on Diwali and New Year. "Interestingly, in spite of high ticket prices, people flew in good numbers. Marriage season too helped in the passenger movement," said a city-based tour operator. PlastIndia 2015 held in second week of February saw more than 70,000 delegates participating in the event from inside and outside India.
