(4 : 00PM) Mumbai Vs Delhi Mumbai, (8 : 00PM) PM expresses pain over loss of lives in AP accident Agency | New Delhi Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed pain over the loss of lives in a road mishap in Andhra Pradesh. “Pained by the loss of lives due to an accident in AP s Chittoor dist. Condolences to families of the deceased & prayers with the injured,” he tweeted. A truck rammed into a group of protesters outside a police station in Chittoor this afternoon, resulting in the death of 13 people and injuries to 18, who included some police officers. Dining in hotels and restaurants will be less expensive now as the government has made service charge on hotel and restaurant bills ‘totally voluntary’. In a series of tweet, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs Ram Vilas Paswan on Friday said that service charge on hotel and restaurant bills is “totally voluntary” and not mandatory after the government approved guidelines on service charge. “Hotels/Restaurants should not decide how much service charge is to be paid by customer and it should be left to discretion of customer. Government has approved guidelines on Service Charge. Service Charge is totally voluntary and not mandatory now,” tweeted Paswan. The minister also said that the guidelines are being sent to states for necessary action at their ends. SC questions Centre for making Aadhaar mandatory for PAN

Agency | New Delhi The Centre today faced searching questions from the Supreme Court for making Aadhaar mandatory for PAN cards, despite its order that it should be optional. The government tried to justify its stand saying that fake permanent account number (PAN) cards were being used to “divert funds” to shell firms. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi made the submission as a bench comprising Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan asked him why Aadhaar has been made mandatory for applying for PAN when the apex court had earlier said it should be made optional. Responding to the court’s query, Rohatgi said the government has found that lots of fake PAN cards have been procured on the basis of fake ration cards

and other documents and these were used to divert funds to shell companies. He said there were instances were a person was found to be having several PAN cards and to stop such situation, it has been decided to make Aadhaar mandatory while applying for PAN. “There is a legislative mandate now. Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act says so. It is the only option as we have found that people were getting PAN cards on fake ration cards and such PANs were used to divert fund to shell companies,” the Attorney General told the bench. To this, the bench observed “is this the remedy that you need to have Aadhaar for having PAN? Why has it been made mandatory despite this court’s order?” Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, introduced by the Finance Act 2017, provides for mandatory quoting of Aadhaar or enrolment ID of Aadhaar application form for filing of income tax returns.

third-largest information technology service provider has sacked 300-600 employees to “align its workforce with business objectives, strategic priorities of the organisation and requirement of its clients”. The incident is emblematic of the quagmire of slowing growth and environmental difficulties that lay ahead of the Indian information technology companies.

Why being a techie in India is no longer cool

The multiple challenges being faced by India’s information technology companies have begun taking a toll on the employment prospects, with one of the largest organised employment sector cutting back on hiring or even undertaking retrenchment. The most recent case in point being Wipro. Yesterday, news reports said that India’s

under which an authority will be set up will have powers to take action, the official added. Last week, Paswan had said that the ministry has prepared an advisory on the service charge issue and the same was sent to the PMO for approval. “Service charge does not exist. It is being wrongly charged. We have prepared an advisory on this issue. We have sent it to the PMO for approval,” Paswan had said. A number of complaints from consumers have been received that hotels and restaurants were charging ‘service charge’ in the range of 5-20 per cent, in lieu of tips, the ministry had said earlier. Earlier too, on several occasions, Paswan spoke against unfair imposition of service charge on food bill and had even sought explanation from hotels and restaurants’ bodies. In January, the department of consumer affairs stated that service charge on food bills is not compulsory and a customer can choose to have it waived if not satisfied with experience.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said China’s position on the eastern section of the India- China boundary is clear and consistent Agency | New Delhi

China on Friday dismissed India’s charge of inventing names for six places in Arunachal Pradesh, saying it is its ‘lawful right’ to do so,said. China was responding to the Ministry of External Affairs’ statement on Thursday where it told a group of journalists in New Delhi that inventing names of states of a neighbour does not make illegal occupation legal. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said China’s position on the eastern section of the India- China boundary is clear and consistent, referring to Arunachal Pradesh. “Relevant names have been used by ethnic Momba and Tibetan Chinese who have lived here for generations. So it is a fact that cannot be changed. To standardise these names

and publicise them is a legitimate measure based on our lawful right,” he was quoted as saying by said. The renaming controversy made headlines on Thursday when China had announced it has ‘standardised’ official names for six places in the Northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh and termed the provocative move as ‘legitimate action’. In response, India reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India. In a statement to the media yesterday, MEA spokesperson Gopal Baglay had said “renaming or in-

venting names of states of your neighbour do not make illegal occupation as legal”. The six names renamed by China are as follows: Wo’gyainling, Mila Ri, Qoidengarbo Ri, Mainquka, Bumo La and Namkapub Ri. The corresponding names with their latitude and longitude taken into account list these places as Tawang, Kra Daadi, West Siang, Siang, Anjaw and Subansiri respectively. While some experts have viewed China’s latest move as a way to underscore its territorial sovereignty, China has said.

2 / Dt. 22-04-2017, Saturday Editors’ Picks Saturday, APRIL 22, 2017 Sonu Nigam’s azaan tweet row: Noise Pollution And Forced Religiousness Oh god, I couldn’t agree more. Come on, admit it. Do you like waking up to loud Jagrata or bhajan or azaan or movie song, or noise from the kitchen mixer or even your mum’s high decibel voice so damn early in the morning? No! I remember having a fight with an elderly co-passenger on a train once. He was speaking about his blood sugar levels and vegetables to cure constipation to another passenger at the top of his voice at 6 am! And when I told him to speak a bit softly, he said: “This is the problem with youngsters! It’s 6 am. Why don’t you wake up?” He had absolutely no idea that I was awake till 3 am writing a story on my mobile phone. I just had 8 hours in 24 hours to write my story, eat, sleep, shit, talk to my parents (you know call from mums can never be short), and this man was sermonising me at 5 am. That is how being ‘forced’ feels! When an individual is ‘forced’ or ‘pressurised’ to follow religious discourse or music or way of life, it called ‘forced religiousness’. So, there is absolutely nothing wrong with what Sonu Nigam said. I don’t know whether it had anything to do with Hinduism or Islam but forcing people to listen to bhajans and azaan is definitely forced religiousness. A theatre of the absurd has been underway since singer Sonu Nigam tweeted up a storm Monday morning protesting against the use of loudspeakers for the call to Azaan, referring to the practice as “gundagardi”. For this, he was criticised, praised and trolled all day, which led him to attempt a clarification stating that his opposition was solely anti-loudspeaker. That however only stoked the non-event further, earning a smattering of jibes from within the Bollywood fraternity too. As if that wasn’t enough, a Kolkata-based cleric jumped right in on Tuesday with an award of Rs 10 lakh for shaving Nigam’s head. Syed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi, vice president of the West Bengal Minority United Council, stated: “If anyone can shave his [Nigam’s] hair, put a garland of old torn shoes around his neck and tour him around the country, I personally announce an award of Rs 10 lakh for that person.” As per a DNA report, Quaderi claimed that he would have done the same if “one had talked ill about the sound of bells coming from a temple as well … People like Nigam should be driven out of the country.” A happily provoked, unfazed Nigam tweet-announced on Wednesday, February 19, “Today at 2pm Aalim will come to my place, and shave my head. Keep your 10 lakhs ready Maulavi” and recently followed through on that, putting the Quaderi and his brazenly comic fatwa in a rather absurd position. Nigam is now steadfastly claiming his earned reward. Most recently, the cleric has only emphasised his nonsensical demands instead of taking them back, by asking Nigam to carry through the shoe-garland and the parading too, in order the claim the reward. It is certainly worth wondering whether this whole ensemble isn’t a bit too much drama, especially in the way a slumbering celebrity went about making it a personal issue out of the blue.

Well-known producer Prem Menon, who successfully distributed Vikram-starrer I and Baahubali: The Beginning among other films in Kerala, believes the phenomenal success of these movies has widened the market for non-Malayalam films in the state. Both I and Baahubali were high earners in Kerala, with a combined gross of over Rs 20 crore. “The success of Baahubali and I opened the eyes of distributors and theatre owners. It even widened the market for non-Malayalam films in Kerala. While Baahubali grossed over Rs 11 crore in its entire run, I grossed around Rs 10 crore,” said Menon, managing director, Global United Media (GUM). It’s with Shankar-directed Tamil revenge drama

Asked about the secret formula behind the successful distribution model, he said “carpet bombing of screens”. “When we bought I and were planning to release in 225 screens, a lot of people thought we were doing a mistake. One

needs to understand that a shelf life of a film today is the first three days. Then, the content and word-ofmouth decides the fate of a film,” he said. “But if you could draw maximum audiences in the first three days, you’re at least guaranteed very good opening. We give prime importance to marketing,” Menon, whose company is credited for creating the world’s largest poster of Baahubali first part during its release, said.

BJP Says I Eat Beef, None Of Their Business, Says Mamata Banerjee Agency | Kolkata

As the ruling Trinamool Congress confirmed founder Mamata Banerjee as its chief for another six-year term, the West Bengal chief minister called on regional parties to come together to defeat the BJP, against which she launched her strongest attack in recent times. Addressing thousands of her party’s workers and leaders at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata, Ms Banerjee lashed out against what she called the BJP’s alleged attempt to label her anti-Hindu. “Hum bebakuf nahi hai (I am no fool),” she thundered. “They tried to stop me from entering Jagannath Temple but they cannot decide who is a big Hindu and who is a small Hindu. Or which Hindu is Muslim.” At Puri in Odisha where the famous Jagannath temple is, a handful of people had raised “go back Mamata” slogans, alleging that Ms Banerjee supports the consumption of beef. “The BJP is spending crores. They are putting my photo on social media and putting words in my mouth. They say I ate beef,” she said, adding, “What I eat is my business but they have captured social media and saying all kinds of things and if anyone objects, they are threatening them with murder.” The chief minister, accused by the BJP of minority appeasement, alleged that the rival party is “maligning Hinduism,” saying, “Hinduism is not the BJP’s religion.

Having been pulled out of Australia’s one-day team to prepare for India, then ignored by selectors for every match in the subcontinent, batsman Usman Khawaja is guarded about his chances of winning a Test recall for the Ashes. The stylish number three suffered a further blow on Thursday when he was left out of Australia’s one-day squad for next month’s Champions Trophy in England and Wales. Being excluded from the nation’s formidable one-day team is nothing to be ashamed about given the batting riches at selectors’ disposal. However, the India snub was a bitter pill to swallow for a player who had averaged 66.75 in the preceding Test series against Pakistan after topping the runs list in a losing cause against South Africa. As Australia lurched to an emphatic defeat in Sri Lanka last year, he was

axed, somewhat harshly, for the third and final Test along with opener Joe Burns. He made his displeasure with selectors clear. Still stinging from the omission, Khawaja told local media he and Burns were “scapegoats” for the team’s wider failures, an indiscretion that earned him a quiet “chat” with coach Darren Lehmann. Former players and media pundits have repeatedly accused Australia’s selectors of being poor communicators and particularly ham-fisted in their handling of dropped players.
