Sri Lanka blasts: Perpetrators of the attack should be brought to justice, says MEA

MS gave us a massive scare: Virat Kohli

Bangalore : Mahendra Singh Dhoni did what he does best, give opposition a massive scare, said Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli after his team beat CSK by one run in an IPL humdinger on Sunday. “A whole lot of emotions,” said Kohli when asked about what he was going through after yet another last-ball thriller. “We were outstanding with the ball until the 19th over mark. On the last ball, that (run-out) was the last thing I would have expected to happen. Feels good to win a game by a small margin. MS did what he does best and he gave us all a massive scare,” said Kohli at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Sri Lanka was rocked by at least six explosions on Easter Sunday which claimed nearly 156 lives and at least 400 people injured. New Delhi : Hours after multiple bomb blasts rocked Sri Lanka, External Affairs Ministry released a statement saying it “calls for the perpetrators of the attack to be brought to justice expeditiously.” The MEA’s statement read, “We strongly condemn the serial blasts on multiple locations in Sri Lanka today morning in which many people have been killed and injured. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and Government of Sri Lanka. We wish speedy recovery to those injured in the attacks. We call for perpetrators of such ghastly and heinous act and those who provide them support to be brought to justice

expeditiously. We stand together with the people and Government of Sri Lanka in this hour of grief.” External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj Sunday said the government is keeping a close watch on the situation and was in touch with the Indian High Commissioner in Colombo. “Colombo — I am in constant touch with Indian High Commissioner in Colombo. Colombo : A string of eight devastating blasts, including suicide attacks, struck churches and luxury hotels frequented by foreigners in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, killing 215 people and shattering a decade of peace in the island nation since the end of the brutal civil war with the LTTE. The blasts — one of the deadliest attacks in the country’s history — targeted St Anthony’s Church in Colombo, St Sebastian’s Church in the western coastal town of Negombo and Zion Church in the eastern town of Batticaloa around 8.45 am (local time) as the Easter Sunday mass were in progress, police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said. Director of the National Hospital Dr. Anil Jasinghe identified 11 of the 27 foreign nationals killed in the coordinated attacks believed to be carried out by a single group. An Indian, two Chinese and one each from Poland, Denmark, Japan, Pakistan, America, Morocco and Bangladesh are among the dead at the National Hospital. Around 500 people, including Indians, were injured in the attacks. No group has claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attacks. However, most

Briefing reporters, Gunasekera said the police was not able to confirm at the moment if they were all suicide attacks. He, however, said that one of the blasts at the Katuwapitiya (Negombo) church has signs of being what looked like a suicide attack. An unnamed official

said a suicide bomber blew himself up at the restaurant of the Cinnamon Grand hotel. Gunasekara said that 66 bodies were kept at the National Hospital while 260 injured were receiving treatment there and 104 bodies were placed at the Negombo Hospital and 100 injured were receiving treatment at the Hospital. Later in the day, a powerful blast in the capital’s southern suburb near the Colombo Zoo killed two persons, Gunasekera said. When a police team entered a house in the Colombo north suburb of Orugodawatta to conduct a search, a suicide bomber blew himself up causing a concrete floor of a twostorey building to crash on them, killing three policemen in the eighth blast, police said.

Gogoi called her charges part of a “bigger force…to undermine the independence of the judiciary and deactivate the office of the CJI”. Accusing the Leftwing backed media outlets of shouldering unverified allegations, Jaitley said, “The last few years have witnessed the consolidation of ‘institution destabilizers’ in a major way. Many of these destabilizers represent Left or ultra-Left views. They have no electoral base or popular

They continue to believe in the old Marxian philosophy of ‘wrecking the system from within.’ They use free speech to destroy the judicial institution.” “This section has found a convenient ally in a small but vocal section of the Bar. This section exploits the judicial refrain of excessively using the power of contempt. However, they themselves have no hesitation in contemptuous behaviour themselves. New Delhi : Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday said in order to bring a change in Pakistan’s behaviour, India should also change its stance towards the country. “Whatever we do, we have to make Pakistan change its behaviour. That means we must also change our behaviour towards Pakistan. These attitudinal changes will happen over a period of time. Gender diversity as part of an organizational strategy

We know gender diversity works. Research across the world has shown that gender-diverse companies are associated with higher return on equity and higher profits than homogeneous companies. A McKinsey report shows that companies in the top quartile of gender diversity have shown 15% higher net profit than those of various countries’ respective national median industry companies. Major organizations have realized the benefits of having a gender-diverse workforce. Companies are also coming to realize that gender bias is rampant across organizational systems and can counter their efforts to promote diversity. For example, Amazon found that its Artificial Intelligence (AI) recruitment tool differentially rejected female applicants for several years because of bias. From public statements by top management to conducting two-day diversity workshops, measures to counter this have often been top-down and non-data driven. Therefore, a larger question remains: Are the measures taken to improve gender diversity working? As part of a gender equity project to study global organizations at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, I found that companies in India inadvertently reject female applicants from their recruitment processes by having differential standards to evaluate male and female applicants. Some firms rejected women of specific age groups based on their likelihood of getting married or becoming pregnant. Recruiters often asked personal questions directly or indirectly during the interview. Another firm inadvertently set a higher bar for female candidates, seeking 20% higher work experience compared to their male counterparts. Due to lack of granular data, the recruiting teams were often unaware of the gendered selection rates of candidates. The top management continued to encourage women to apply without realizing the leaky recruitment value chain underneath. The recruitment process consists of several sub-processes: from designing a job ad to the final on-boarding process. Bias can exist at all these levels and have a significant effect on the number of women getting recruited. Studying 800,000 job advertisements in India, a World Bank report found that 60% of all gender-targeted ads preferred men over women. Gendered wordings in a job ad affected perceptions of who belonged and who didn’t and led to a difference in the number of men and women who applied. Organizations have a huge financial, social and ethical responsibility to take active measures to eliminate bias in their systems. They need to take two key actions. First, invest in a gender-lens data collection and reporting process. Having clean data and a shared understanding of what the data represents is crucial. For example, Google could reduce the attrition rate for post-partum women by 50% after data showed that the attrition rate for female employees was twice that of their male counterparts. Data can also help assess the impact of your interventions. For example, most companies have employee referral policies because they increase employee satisfaction and tenure. But research has shown that people network with and refer people like themselves. In an organization that already has fewer women than men, referrals can prove to be a double-edged sword. It is impossible to know if your referral process, or any other intervention for that matter, is working without having a gender-lens data system. Second, invest in a team. In India, diversity is often added onto the human resources (HR) team’s already overflowing plate. This takes away the focus and attention the issue of diversity deserves and creates a conflict of interest as well. The HR team is usually responsible for screening out resumes in the initial stage of the recruitment process. Because hundreds of candidates apply, the team often rejects as many as 95% of all applicants from the process. The leaky pipeline for female ap- Kapilkumar M. Waiting for release of Modi biopic, Vivek Oberoi visits Sai temple Shirdi : Actor Vivek Oberoi, who is playing the lead role in a biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, offered prayers at the Saibaba temple here to seek blessings for the release of the film soon. He visited the famous temple, located at Shirdi town in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, on Saturday. Later while talking to mediapersons, Oberoi expressed hope that PM Narendra Modi, whose release has been withheld by the Election Commission (EC), will hit the theaters soon. “We sought blessings of Saibaba. Our supporters and fans are eagerly waiting to watch the film.

The biopic has been the mosttalked about movie in this election season. Directed by Omung Kumar, it tells the story of Modi’s rise to power from his humble beginnings.

We made the film based on an inspirational story, but political parties are attacking it…we are expecting the film to be released soon,” the actor said. Vivek Oberoi said the film will inspire the young generation. The MNS last month threatened to stall the release of the biopic, claiming it violated the model code of conduct for the ongoing Lok Sabha

polls. “I don’t know why MNS chief Raj Thackeray is talking against the film? I invite him to watch the film with us and he will like it,” the actor said. Oberoi also urged Congress president Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and DMK president M K Stalin to watch the film, claiming “they will like it”. The EC on April 10 stalled

He is now another entity entirely called the Three-Eyed-Raven, a kind of a seer who is concerned with the larger conflicts like the one against the Night King and not with petty human things like vengeance. Daenerys Targaryen and the Starks may be less forgiving. In the teaser for the episode itself, Daenerys tells Jaime how she always dreamt of avenging her father Aerys Targaryen who was killed

the release of the biopic until the Lok Sabha polls ends, saying any such film that subserves the purpose of any political entity or individual should not be displayed in electronic media. Acting on the complaints of political parties, including the Congress, the poll panel asserted that any biopic material with the potential to disturb the level-playing field should not be displayed in areas where the model code of conduct was in force. Later, the Supreme Court directed the EC to watch the full biopic and take an informed decision on banning its pan-India release.

Mohanlal to turn director with Barroz

New Delhi : Malayalam superstar Mohanlal on Sunday took to his blog to announce his first directorial venture. The project has been titled Barroz and it will be a 3D film. The actor said both children and grownups will enjoy Barroz which has a Portuguese backdrop. The film will be an adaptation of My Dear Kuttichathan director Jijo Punnoose’s story Barroz – Guardian of D’ Gama’s Treasure. Mohanal added that the story revolves

around Barroz who has been guarding Gama’s treasure for over 400 years and he will hand over the treasure to only the true successors of Gama. What happens when a kid cross paths with Barroz forms the crux of the film. While Mohanlal will play the titular role in Barroz, the film will also feature many international actors. The actor also revealed that the film will be shot in Goa. He added the scouting for locations has been completed.

Ag-GNS, Mumbai : New details regarding Ranbir Kapoor’s character in Ayan Mukerji’s upcoming fantasy film Brahmastra have come to light. A source told Mid-day that the actor plays the role of a DJ in the movie. “Ranbir plays a DJ who walks out of his house against his father’s wishes. The story then traces his journey as he tries to fulfill his dreams and discovers his superpowers in the process,” the source said. Brahmastra also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Mouni Roy and Akkineni Nagarjuna. Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions

and Fox Star Studios are bankrolling the movie. Pritam has given the film’s music. It will be the first movie in a planned epic trilogy. The film takes its title from a weapon owned by the god of creation Brahma in Hindu myths that never missed its target. Kapoor has earlier described the film as “romantic-fairytale in a supernatural format.” But the movie is set in the modern age despite what the title suggests. Filmmaker Ayan Mukerji had told the media in an interaction, “It’s

a modern-day film set in India as it exists today. But the reason it’s called Brahmastra is because the energies, wisdom, powers in the film come from ancient India. That’s all I would say. There are some costumes, maybe not the way you’d expect them to be.” He had added, “It’s a very big project of my life. All my hopes are on this film. I am very excited about the cast but I hope the film is even bigger than the cast. They have all come together because of the story and the theme of the film.”

Ag-GNS, Mumbai : Alia Bhatt, touted as one of the most sought-after young actors in Bollywood, says she was “never confident” of being part of two eminent filmmakers Sanjay Leela Bhansali and S S Rajamouli’s films. Alia feels overwhelmed to be directed by two renowned directors Bhansali and Rajamouli in Inshallah and RRR, respectively. She finds both of them similar when it comes to their passion for cinema. “For me the bigness, the high is to be working with these two directors. There is a similarity between them, I think they are both obsessed with their films. “They have got such a clear vision with what they do. They are so creative, it is all artistic. I was never too confident that

I will be part of either of their films,” Alia said. It was a long wait for Alia, who had auditioned for Bhansali’s 2005 movie Black at the age of nine, but was rejected. She adds, “I was hoping for many years to work with him. When one day news came up that he is doing a film I was like why isn’t he coming to me. When he did

come to me, I was over the moon.” Inshallah will see her sharing screen space with superstar Salman Khan for the first time. Talking about how her pairing with Salman will be presented in the film, Alia says, “I don’t want to talk much about it. I would just say let’s wait for the magician being, Mr Bhansali to reveal his traits.

KV Vijayendra Prasad on Kangana Details about Ranbir Kapoor’s Ranaut: She is a self-made actress character in Ayan Mukerji film Manikarnika Brahmastra revealed writer KV Vijayendra Prasad heaped praise on Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut in a recent statement.

Ag-GNS, Mumbai : Actor Kangana Ranaut received immense praise for making a smashing directorial debut with Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. Now, she is teaming up for Jayalalithaa biopic titled Thalaivi with Manikarnika writer KV Vijayendra Prasad who has some kind words to say about the actor. “It’s sweet of Kangana to say nice things about me. In an age where earning the position of a leading lady in

Bollywood is so challenging, she went on to shoulder a film without anyone’s support. She is indeed a self-made actress”, said the veteran writer-director in a statement. Kangana’s announcement on Jayalalithaa biopic came a few days after the actor made an official announcement about directing her biopic based on her own life. “The biopic will give a chance to look at my life objectively. It is not an expose of people in the industry. All the

episodes will be there. It is on my struggle, which is unusual,” Kangana said at India Today Conclave that took place earlier this year. Jayalalithaa’s biopic Thalaivi will be a bilingual film. It will release as Thalaivi in Tamil and Jaya in Hindi. The movie will be written by KV Vijayendra Prasad, who has also penned superhits like the Baahubali series, Manikarnika and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The film will be jointly produced by Vishnu Vardhan Induri and Shaailesh R Singh under the banners of Vibri & Karma Media and Entertainment.

Winterfell against the Army of the Dead in season 8’s trailer. Now, Jon was told about his true ancestry by Samwell Tarly at Bran’s behest. He knows he is a Targaryen and an heir to the Iron Throne. Our guess is that he will not tell Dany immediately that he has a stronger claim to the Iron Throne than her. He might discuss this with Arya, his favourite sibling (now we know she is his cousin) and perhaps Sansa too, who will doubtless insist on telling

Daenerys. But tell he will (probably not in the second episode), and we also think he will stake a claim on the Iron Throne. Jon might have been a reluctant leader, but he might want to rule the Seven Kingdoms after he realises how dangerous Dany can be if she continues to burn her enemies alive. Also, Dany will certainly not take this lightly. She might love Jon, but her love has limits. She has dreamt to rule Westeros for a very long time. She also has two dragons and vast armies of the Unsullied and the Dothraki. This is going to create a rift between the living before the Night King and his Army of the Dead arrives. It is like the book series, A Song of Ice and Fire, which is said to be a metaphor for climate change. That a huge external threat is coming when the people were squabbling amongst themselves instead of uniting to fight.

Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 2 New Delhi : The first episode of the final season of Game of Thrones was basically a setup for the more important things to come. It was entertaining thanks mostly to reunions galore, but still just set the stage for the simmering character conflicts that will come out in the open. Note: Spoilers for the first episode of season 8 ahead. The second episode is going to take things further and also resolve the cliffhanger the first episode ended with. Jaime Lannister was forced to confront his past sins when he stood face-to-face with Bran Stark. Here is what to expect from the second episode. All this is pure speculation but may also be potentially spoiler-y. Jaime Lannister pushed Bran from his window when the kid caught him in the act with his sister. We do not think Bran bears any ill-will towards Jaime, for the simple reason that he

by the man who was sworn to defend him. The Starks, once they come to know it was Jaime who almost killed Bran and for the very reason that he is a Lannister and was in league with Cersei might want to punish him. But Tyrion will likely come to his brother’s defence. Brienne might also pitch in and tell everybody that Jaime is not the man they think he is. Whatever the case, Jaime will not be executed as we have seen him fighting in the battle of

Everton loss not worthy of a Manchester United team: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer apologised to fans and said Sunday’s 4-0 loss to Everton showed that his team was far away from the standard needed to compete at the top of the Premier League table.

Manchester : Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer apologised to fans and said Sunday’s 4-0 loss to Everton showed that his team was far away from the standard needed to compete at the top of the Premier League table. United have now lost five straight away games in all competitions for the first time since 1981 and have lost six of their last eight matches with their hopes of qualification for next year’s Champions League fading with the latest loss. “We’re way off where we want to be. When you lose in the league like we did here, everyone sees that we have a big job to do,” said Solskjaer. “This club has been down before, we’ve just got to pick ourselves up. It might not happen overnight,

but it’s going to happen. “We know it’s a big task and there is work to be done. We have to do it together, we have to get on with it because this is not good enough,” added the Norwegian. The performance at sun-blessed Goodison Park lacked any of the spark, enthusiasm and confidence of the early Solskjaer reign and was described by former captain Gary Neville as “rancid”. From the moment Brazilian Richarlison volleyed Everton ahead in the 13th minute, United were second best in every area. “From the first whistle everything went wrong. I just want to apologise to

the fans. They’re the only people with the badge on today who can hold their head high, because we can’t,” he said after going over to the visiting supporters at the conclusion of the lifeless performance. “Everton were better than us at all the basics. There are so many things that we need to do better to get a result. Talent has never been enough.” Everton were 2-0 up at the break and never looked in danger of allowing United back into the game. Solskjaer’s side did not force Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford into action with a short on target until the 86th minute.

Ahmedabad : With the political storm of the Lok Sabha elections is at its peak, former Chief Justice of India Justice Dipak Misra asked students of Nirma University to reach out to others beyond their differences for ‘peace, positivity and humility in the world today’. “A discordant view of another does not make someone an alien. A fair amount of discussion leads you to the establishment of a society with flexibility that proceeds on the path of progress where each one is part of the cohesive whole in spite of the differences. That is a sign of maturity,” said the former CJI, who was the chief guest of the 27th annual convocation of Nirma University which was held on April 20. A total of

567 students received their degrees at the convocation including 29 PhD scholars, 246 full-time MBA students, 55 students of MBA (family business & entrepreneurship), 33 students of BBA-

MBA five-year integrated programme, 14 students of BBA, 176 students of UG-IL, 5 students of M Tech.,two students of MCA, five students of BTech., and two students of MSc. courses

Ahmedabad : Politicians, activists and celebrities are not the only ones who are asking people to turn up to polling booths on voting day. As Gujarat goes to poll on April 23, companies here are pushing their employees to go out and vote. While some of them have offered incentives to promote voting, there are even a few that have gone to the extent of announcing a day’s pay cut for those failing to show an inked finger. While the law states that the voting day should be a general holiday for private, government and PSUs offices operational in the constituency going to polls, Additional District Election officer Chetan Gandhi said the only exception to this norm are those involved in security operations, key economic activity

Ahmedabad : A report on communal violence in 2018, Deepening Roots of Communalism in Gujarat, by a city-based human rights organization, Buniyaad, states that 46% of incidents of communal violence in rural Gujarat in 2018 were triggered by the spread of hate messages through social media. The study says 13 incidents of communal violence were reported in rural Gujarat in 2018. “Communal riots in the past were restricted to urban areas. The spread of communal hatred and

violence to rural areas has become evident in the last couple of years and continued in 2018. Social media platforms are a tool to spread hatred along religious lines,” the study says. In 2018, communal violence was reported in Kherda (Anand), Halvad (Morbi), Matar (Kheda), Chhatral (Gandhinagar), Sherpur (Idar), Vadali (Sabarkantha), Vaktapur (Sabarkantha), Sanjeli (Dahod) and Eral (Panchmahal) villages besides Fatehpura, Wa g h o d i y a a n d N y a y Mandir areas of Vadodara

district, according to the study. “In six of these 13 incidents, social media had a key role in the spread of hate messages which eventually triggered communal tension and violence,” said Hozefa Ujjaini, who leads Buniyaad. “For instance, at Fatehpura in Vadodara, an alleged incident of stone-pelting at a Ram Navami procession, triggered a riot between two communities. According to locals, unidentified miscreants hurled stones at the procession, which brushed the statue of Lord Ram mounted atop an open

truck. Provocative messages were then circulated on WhatsApp, which fuelled the riots,” he added. Analysis of communal incidents in Gujarat revealed that religious festivals, processions, rallies, inter-religious relationships, derogatory/controversial songs, eve-teasing and hate speech are trigger-points for communal riots. Gujarat had 1.06 crore internet subscribers in rural areas as on December 2018, according to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Ahmedabad : A local court ordered a farmer to pay his wife maintenance under provisions of the Domestic Violence Act, after the court observed that the couple’s marriage was void. Laljibhai and Janakben Vaghela were married in December 15 and got their marriage registered in Nadiad. They got married while their earlier marriages were subsisting, without divorcing their previous spouses. The couple lived together for a year and had a daughter. After matrimonial discord, the woman was forced to leave her husband’s home with the infant girl. She filed a complaint under domestic violence laws and sought maintenance and compensation. Before the court, the husband disputed their marriage and accused the woman of threatening him with false cases to make the documents. The court had to decide whether the couple had co-habited and domestic violence really took place The court answered these questions in the affirmative

and ordered Vaghela to pay the woman and her daughter Rs 7,500 as monthly maintenance, besides Rs 10,000 compensation for domestic violence. Additional civil judge at the Mirzapur rural court Abhishek Sahu said, “As for the maintenance of the applicant, it may be seen that the marriage between the parties is a void marriage. And thus, the applicant is not eligible for proper maintenance from the opponent. However, the applicant will be required to be given maintenance for the part which she has been suffering due to domestic

violence.” The court said that while Vaghela had his own house and agricultural land, the woman had nothing much to prove his income. However, the fact that they lived together as husband and wife entitled her to maintenance because domestic violence was proved. The woman has to bear the burden of the child and the expense of the rented house after being driven out of her matrimonial home. This led the court to pass a “reasonable order” keeping in mind the residential requirements and maintenance of the woman and her child.
