Raghuram Rajan exit: Will economic experts reveal reality behind doomsday predictions?
For the past month or two, volumes of opinions and news reports – in print, digital and broadcast – articulated by a number of leading economists and financial experts have been telling ordinary citizens that they should thank their stars for living in India at a time when Raghuram Rajan is the RBI governor. Based on their analysis, I was indeed thanking my stars. The sum and substance of their argument was that India would be doomed in case Rajan ceases to be the governor, the foreign capital will leave on a supersonic jet from India, the economy will collapse, and though India will still be called India it would look more like Afghanistan, Sudan, Ethiopia et al. Come 4 September, no NRI will ever again believe in India. No industry and business will ever believe in India. RBI without Raghuram Rajan would be like Agra without Taj Mahal. Now was the time to curse the stars, for it looked like Rajan was leaving. They meant to say that the highest ever inflow of foreign capital, achieved in the year in 2015-16, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been boasting about – US$ 55.46 billion as against US$ 36.04 billion during the financial year 2013-14 – was an intellectual heist. The FDI figures were correct, they said, but the inflow was not because of the so called dynamism of Modi, or the Make in India, Digital India mantras etc, or the meetings he had with NRIs, heads of governments and nations and with business leaders across the globe. It was because, collectively and individually, the world saw Rajan as the chief of the central bank and because of the confidence he inspired in them. So in a way, for foreign investors India was Rajan and Rajan was India, as simple as that. But didn’t we hear something like this a few decades ago, India is Indira and Indira is India, albeit in an entirely different context. I believed the learned writers. After all, they are supposed to know about this intricate subject. They have travelled the world and have high sounding degrees from some of the best known institutions in the world or had served at fanciful positions in various governments at the Centre or been part of some research institute or the other. It also didn’t matter that the industry, which till other day, was said to be unhappy with Rajan’s resistance to cut interest rates but suddenly they all came together to tell that Rajan was a superman, a demiGod who has taken avatar in India during the worst of times. He was as badly needed to be there at the helm in RBI as a good monsoon in the parched lands of Vidarbha. I started wondering if it will be alright when Rajan leaves after another three years term, say with an extension till 2019, or if he is so indispensable then why not give him a special term – retirement at 75 so that in next 20-23 years he can take India on a course where nothing can ever hamper us. People would not even care to elect a prime minister or a chief minister, or who it was, for Rajan’s RBI will take economy to a path where even Saudi Kings would envy us. I had my self-interest. I didn’t want a deluge to hit India and by consequence my family, friends acquaintance and so on, I secretly began praying for better sense to prevail on the Modi government so that it gives an extension to Rajan. Some of us had seen and even suffered in the 2008-09 meltdown.

The Rolls Royce 103EX was unveiled at an event in London, and its unique design has received some mixed response. As this Washington Post article someone called the car ‘butt-ugly,’ while another review called it a ‘sublimely crazy’ idea. Rolls-Royce 103EX will actually be launching in the market somewhere around 2040s, and as this Guardian article points, the company has not revealed exactly how the car is powered, even though it is claiming zero-emissions from its new concept vehicle. The car has quite an intriguing design nonetheless with “28inch tall, narrow wheels upon which the car glides are each hand-built from 65 individual pieces of aluminium”, a luggage compartment that is right next to the front wheels, and also opens and closes automatically at the start and end of a journey.
New South Wales have confirmed that Michael Clarke will not play for them in any format in the 2016-17 season. The NSW are set to begin their defence of the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup this summer and the former Australian skipper has not played for them since November 2013. After remaining shut for almost a month following a major fire, the 210 MW unit-5 of 850 MW Ukai thermal power plant in Gujarat has commenced operations. The unit had been shut since May 17, after a major fire broke out due to oil leakage and the entire unit-5 was damaged. The operations began Sunday. “This unit has started generating 170 MW as per the requirement,” Gujarat State Electricity Company (GSEC) Executive Director H N Baxi said. “All the civil, mechanical instruments, turbine and furniture were damaged in the fire.
A survey had been undertaken at the unit and a report was submitted to the authorities,” he said. All the damaged cables and valves have been replaced and the entire machinery of the unit was checked and verified before bringing it back on stream, he
For not passing budget third time: Gujarat govt dissolves Gondal taluka panchayat
After Ruling Congress failed thrice to pass the annual budget of Gondal taluka panchayat, the Gujarat government on Monday dissolved its general board and appointed an administrator. “We received a notification from development commissioner today ordering dissolving the Gondal taluka panchayat with immediate effect. The action has been taken after the ruling party failed thrice to pass the annual budget. It was incumbent upon the party to get the budged passed by March 31. But it couldn’t do so in two attempts. The government
gave it one more opportunity. But its third attempt also remained unsuccessful, warranting the dissolution of the body,” district development officer (DDO) of Rajkot, Manoj Kothari said. Kothari said that the state government can take action if the ruling party’s budget proposal fails twice to get approval of the general board of a taluka panchayat. The government also appointed Gondal sub-divisional magistrate Hanumantsinh Jadeja as the administrator till a new body is elected. The development marks culmination of mismanagement by Congress.

Over 10, 000 farmers from five talukas of Surat took out a massive rally here on Monday demanding the revocation of the proposed development plan-2035 notification of the Surat Urban Development Authority (SUDA) to merge 104 villages with it. The rally was held under the banner of Gujarat Khedut Samaj (GKS) and members of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) also participated in the rally. Three arrested for 32 lakh burglaries in Surat

The cyber cell of city crime branch on Monday arrested Abbasbaig Mirza, Altafhussain Qureshi and Jignesh Raval for allegedly committing burglaries worth Rs 32 lakh at two shops in Surat recently. The Centre has posed some questions over the Gujarat Agricultural Land Ceiling (Amendment) Bill, 2015, that proposes to change the preamble of the original legislation and make surplus agriculture land — meant for landless farmers — also available to industry.
