SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Editorial

SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Privatising Nationalised Banks To Spell Disaster In Indian Economy July 19 became a historical date for banking sector in India in 1969 when Congress led byPM Indira Gandhi nationalized the private banks in the country. Fifty three years later, onJuly 19, 2022, the Congress had to oppose PM Modi led BJP government who is hell benton privatising the nationalized bank, only to cover their failure i managing them successfullyin the last eight years of their rule precipitating the banking crisis.During the last eight years, Modi government de facto handed over the nationalized banks tofacilitate big borrowers who are chiefly to blame for Nonperforming Loans (NPLs) becausemany of them are not returning the loan amounts and the government is helpless. Thisfacilitation for the big was resorted to at the cost of honest small borrowers. Consequently, avery large amount of banking assets became non-performing commonly known as Non-performing Assets (NPAs). Non-performing, ill-performing, or evil doing nexus of bankofficials, politicians, and borrowing big corporates brought the unprecedented level ofbanking crisis that the country is facing now. However, the Modi government and its Ministryof Finance led by Nirmala Sitharaman thought the entire crisis is the result of “ownership ofgovernment” and to save their skins for the mismanagement they want to transfer the banksin private hands which they call “saving the banks” and “saving the country”.On the other hand the Congress has accused the Modi government of being on a“privatisation spree” and threatened to oppose the “bank sale bill” of the Union government. The Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that the nationalization of banks 53 years agowas a transformational change. … Public Sector Banks must be equipped for facecompetition, but selling them off to a chosen few will be disastrous!” Even the All-India BankOfficers’ Confederation (AIBOC) has expressed their apprehension that the Modigovernment’s move to privatise PSBs is extremely dangerous since it would result in joblosses, branch closures, and financial exclusion of the needy.Who are the “chosen few” to whom the nationalized banks are to be sold will be known in thefuture. However, it has again put on record by non less than the Union Finance MinisterNirmala Sitharaman on the eve of completion of the 53 years of bank nationalization in theparliament of India on July 18 that the government is committed to privatise staterun banks. The Government has introduced New Public Sector Enterprise (PSE) Policy forAatmanirbhar Bharat which has been notified on February 4, 2021 and is applicable toCentral Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and Public SectorInsurance Companies (PSICs). Under this policy, PSEs have been broadly classified asStrategic and Non-strategic Sectors. In the Union Budget 2020, Sitharaman had firstinformed the country that the government planned to privatise two PSBs and several otherPSEs, which the government loves to call disinvestment. Detailed guideline came in December 2021. Modi government is desperate to sell them off to ease its own fiscal crisis, chiefly its ownmaking through policy experiment after deserting the time tested paths. It was like rashdriving the car that met accidents one after the other on the risky road full off potholes. Driver’s blaming the road does not prove him skillful.Though Modi and associates time and again in the habit of flogging the dead horse, onecannot forget the benefits that nationalization of banks has brought to the overalldevelopment of the country and its people through providing them easy access to finance. In 1969, the government took over the ownership and management of private commercialbanks in India because they were indulged in the activities which were found hampering theeconomic development of the country. Economic concentration of power was in the hands ofa selected few and they were using the public resources as per their whims and fancy, supporting their favourites and excluding others. There was no question of social andeconomic justice and banks were functioning on sole motive of profiteering. It resulted intovery low level of usage of natural and human resources for the development of the nation. - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara A d d i t i o n a l l y, common people.

Agency News:Kolkata West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today urged the people to turn 2024 into a “rejection election” to unseat the BJP at the Centre. “Break the shackles of the BJP and its monumental incompetence. A large cutout of a gas cylinder made an appearance, too. Naomi Osaka in need of new coach after Wim Fissette split Agency News:New Delhi Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka is in need of a new coach. Wim Fissette, who began working with Osaka shortly before the start of the 2020 season, wrote on Instagram on Wednesday that he and Osaka are ending their partnership. It has been a privilege to coach Naomi since 2019 and see her grow into the Champion she has become,” Fissette’s post said. “She has inspired a whole new generation to fall in love with the game & to speak up for what they believe in and it’s been incredible to play a part in that journey.”He also thanked Osaka and closed by writing: “I wish you all the best and looking forward to my next chapter.”Fissette coached Osaka to two of her major championships — at the 2020 U.S. Open and 2021 Australian Open.He also previously worked with players such as Victoria Azarenka, Kim Clijsters, Simona Halep

and Angelique Kerber. Those four, like Osaka, have won major titles and spent time at No. 1 in the WTA rankings. ‘I’d find a way to have them both in my team’: Ponting picks India WK for T20 WC Agency News:New Delhi The closer we get to the T20 World Cup, the stiffer the competition is getting. There are only 11 places up for grabs in India’s Playing XI and for every spot, there are at least 4 players gunning for a chance, such is the depth in India’s squad. While some names pick for themselves such as Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Yuzvendra Chahal and even the struggling Virat Kohli, there is a three-way fight for the rest – like Mohammed Shami and Harshal Patel competing for the second-pacer slot and

a four-way competition between Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Dinesh Karthik and Ishan Kishan for the wicketkeeper’s position. If Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja can keep up their current

form, they too will be certainties in the XI, as will Suryakumar Yadav. However, amid all these, the one area which has plenty of suspense surrounding it is the keeper’s position. With all four

players extremely talented and proving themselves with both bat and behind the stumps, it remains to be seen who gets the nod. Weighing in on the same, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has made names two picks out of the four, whom he would give preference to on the basis of current form. “We have seen what Rishabh is capable of in 50-over cricket and I know absolutely what he is capable of in the T20 game. Dinesh Karthik has had his best IPL ever just very recently ... and I would be trying to find every possible way to have both of those guys.
