After Hot Spell, Record August Rain In 14 Years After a 10-day dry spell, the national capital on Saturday received 138.8mm rain in 24 hours, the highest single-day rainfall recorded in August in 14 years and the ninth highest since 1961 for the month, according to data by the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD). The bulk of this was the heaviest this season — between 2.30am on Saturday and 8.30am on Saturday.

Time curbs on markets lifted Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday lifted the Covid-induced restrictions on timings to open markets, allowing them to function beyond 8 pm starting Monday.“Till now, because of Covid-19, shops and enterprises in Delhi’s markets were allowed to open till 8pm. In the light of the decline in cases, the timing restriction will be removed from Monday. Markets can now follow their usual working hours,” Kejriwal said in tweet.Covid cases and the test positivity rate have gradually come under control in the city after a devastating surge of April and May that stretched the Capital’s health infrastructure to its limits. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said the recently enacted factoring regulations have raised the number of factors from nine to 9,000 as micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) can now approach several non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) to monetise their pending receivables.Referring to the Factoring Regulation (Amendment) Bill that was passed in the monsoon session of Parliament, Sitharaman said the legislation aimed to benefit several MSMEs supplying goods and services to large companies and wait for months to get payments. She was speaking at the launch of the ‘Ubharte Sitaare’ Fund in Lucknow, an initiative of India Exim Bank and Small Industries

Development Bank of India (SIDBI) for exportoriented firms and start-ups. She said MSMEs have options to encash their pending bills through factoring – either with a discount or without any discount. Factoring is a business of acquisition of receivables of assignor by accepting assignment of such receivables or financing, whether by way of making loans or advances or in any other manner against the security interest over any receivables. ‘Ubharte Sitaare’ programme includes a mix of structured support, both financial and advisory services through investments in equity, debt, and technical assistance to Indian companies. Sitaraman also released a study by on “Indian Sports Goods Industry: Strategies for Tapping the Export Potential” that highlighted an untapped export potential of $227.4 million.

to reach the target of 1 crore doses in October,” said Dr Patel at a digital press briefing on Saturday. The latest timeline given by the company means the vaccine maker will miss the deadline of supplying 50 million doses by the end of the year. The central government told the Supreme Court in June that 1.35 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines will be made available in the country between August and December this year. This included 50 million doses of Zydus’s ZyCoV-D shot, and 300 million doses of BiologicalE’s jab that is still under trial.Patel

said on Saturday that there will be a delay of 45 days and that the firm will reach the 50-million target by January. He added that the delivery delay is because of a delay in commissioning the company’s new plant as the second wave of Covid-19 infections prevented the travel of experts from other countries. The managing director also said that two to three other manufacturers have expressed interest in producing the vaccine, but such a technology transfer can take another three to four months. SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Modi’s Rural Obsession Camou- 150 Indians detained by Taliban fighters flages Largesse To The Rich on way to airport in Afghan capital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi often shrugs off the criticism that the rich have become richer and the poor poorer under his government as political grandstanding by opponents. But every new piece of information that is emerging on various aspects of the economy, particularly relating to money and investment, suggests that the devastation caused by the Covid pandemic, mostly due to mismanagement and the faulty policies of the government, has sidestepped the rich, who continue to flourish under the Modi dispensation. It is one thing for Modi to keep harping on his rural initiatives, expressed in all sorts of acronyms combining the fancy PM adjunct, but the real hard fact is that his policies have benefited the rich most and if anything the poor has become worse off. Reflecting the skewed performance of the economy, the stock markets have been in a frenzy, when the whole country and the majority of its population have gone through one of their worst periods in memory. In stunning contrast to the plight of the people, the IPO scene betrays a total unconcern for the setbacks to the economy. According to calculations by Bloomberg, the amount of money raised in IPOs this year has reached $8.8 billion, already surpassing the totals of the past three years though it’s only August. At the current pace, 2021 would exceed the all-time record of $11.8 billion. Founders, bankers, lawyers and advisers are racing to cash in on fervent demand for fresh public offerings. The performance reflects a boom in favour of start-ups, of which India has emerged as a major hub. Investments in start-ups imply greater risk and this would mean that those who invest in them have a lot of cash surpluses to spare. The paradox is chilling. Leading Asia-Pacific current affairs magazine The Diplomat opened its story on the growing rich-poor divide in India, saying the day Mukesh Ambani became the fourth richest man in the world in October last year also witnessed the tragic incident of a labourer in Madhya Pradesh who had lost his job due to the lockdown killed himself and his three daughters by tying the girls to his waist and jumping into a well. A recent Oxfam report on India’s rich-poor divide made disturbing reading. While noting that India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, the report pointed out how it is also one of the most unequal countries. Inequality has been rising sharply for the last three decades, with the richest having cornered a huge part of the wealth created through crony capitalism and inheritance. They are getting richer at a much faster pace while the poor are still struggling to earn a minimum wage and access quality education and healthcare services, which continue to suffer. With Modi at the helm, this trend has become all the more pronounced. According to the report, the top 10 percent of the population holds 77 percent of the total national wealth while 73 percent of the wealth generated in 2017 went to the richest 1 percent and 67 million Indians who comprise the poorest half of the population saw only a 1 percent increase in their wealth. The number of billionaires has increased from only 9 in 2000 to 101 in 2017. Between 2018 and 2022, India is estimated to have produced 70 new millionaires every day. Billionaires' fortunes increased by almost 10 times over a decade and their total wealth is higher than the entire Union budget of India for the fiscal year 2018-19, which was at Rs 24,422 billion. An Azim Premji University study estimated that 75 million more people sunk into poverty because of the pandemic, which also saw a large number of small and medium-size businesses getting shut, in the process taking a heavy toll of jobs and incomes, resulting in a deep economic recession. The study found that around 230 million Indians have been pushed into poverty in the last one year. The rate of both rural and urban poverty increased by 15 and 20 percentage points, respectively. Around 150 million workers remained out of work by the end of 2020. A survey of vulnerable households revealed that sample earnings fell by around 40-50 percent in April and May last year. On an average, monthly household income declined by 65 percent. An average Indian household lost about Rs 25,000 in income, equivalent to slightly more than a month’s earnings, in the first six months of the pandemic, as - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara compared to the previous.

Wettest August day in 14 yrs, dry end to month likely: Met Agency News: New Delhi After a 10-day long, hot, dry spell, the national capital on Saturday received 138.8mm rain in 24 hours, the highest single-day rainfall recorded in August in 14 years and the ninth highest since 1961 during the month, showed the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) rainfall records. According to IMD officials, between 8.30am on Friday and 8.30am on Saturday, the Safdarjung observatory received 138.8 mm rainfall. The city received a bulk of its rainfall during the spell — the heaviest this season — between 2.30 am on Saturday and 8.30 am on Saturday.IMD records show that previously Delhi received such a heavy 24hour spell during the month on August 2, 2007, when the city got 166.6mm rainfall. The highest-ever single-day rainfall recorded during this month was on August 2, 1961

(184mm).“Today’s record is also the ninth highest singleday rainfall since 1961. It is mainly because of a cloud belt passing through the northern and central parts of Delhi... Light rain is expected to stay till August 23,” said RK Jenamani, senior scientist, IMD.The wet spell, however, is likely to be over soon, said IMD officials, and the last week of August is likely to be mostly dry. While this August has mostly been dry, with a 10-day break phase, Saturday’s spell has nearly covered the rain deficit for the month. With Saturday’s rain, the total rainfall received this month is 202mm. The normal rainfall count for the month is 247.7mm.August is usually Delhi’s wettest month. The monsoon trough was close to Delhi and with a cloud belt passing through its northern and central parts, heavy rainfall occurred in Delhi. Why no mention of Another extortion A370 in Oppn meet, case filed against Param Bir asks Lone Leaders of 19 parties met virtually on Friday as part of efforts to build unity ahead of the 2024 national elections. Agency News: Srinagar Former Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) minister Sajad Lone has questioned the justification of the presence of representatives from the region at a meeting of Opposition leaders on Friday, if they could not convince them to talk about Constitution’s nullified Article 370.In a series of tweets on Saturday, he referred to the presence of National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader at the meeting and added they became part of the “process that abandons Article 370” in its discourse.

Lone pointed out there was no mention of Article 370, which was nullified in 2019 to strip J&K of its special status, at the meeting even as the Opposition parties sought early elections and restoration of the statehood for the region. “No mention of Article 370 in opposition parties meet. In wonderment how can J and K leaders justify their presence in the meeting if they could not convince the leaders to talk about 370. BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) anti 370 stance is clear. What is the national opposition stance,” tweeted Lone. Lone said Parliament or courts can restore Article 370. “Courts we have to wait. It is a long process. In parliament we know BJP won’t restore it. The quietude of opposition parties suggest they won’t either. Then who will,” he said in another tweet. He added J&K’s leadership should seek “national support” for the restoration of Article 370. “For heavens sake. Let us at least resolve that if we can’t facilitate.

FPIs’ investment value in domestic equity surges 7% to $ 592-bn in Q2 Agency News: New Delhi The value of the foreign portfolio investors (FPI) holdings in the domestic equities reached USD 592 billion in three months ended June 2021, a surge of 7 per cent from the preceding quarter, according to a Morningstar report. This was largely on the back of robust net inflows from FPIs, coupled with the strong performance of the Indian equity markets. “As of the quarter ended June 2021, the value of FPI investments in Indian equities stood at USD 592 billion, which was considerably higher than the USD 552 billion recorded in the previous quarter, a spike of around 7 per cent,” the report noted. As of June 2020, the value of FPI investments in Indian equities had been USD 344 billion.

However, overseas investors’ contribution to domestic equity market capitalisation dropped marginally during the quarter under review to 19.1 per cent from 19.9 per cent for the March quarter.Offshore mutual funds form an important component of total foreign portfolio investment, apart from other large FPIs, such as offshore

insurance companies, hedge funds, and sovereign wealth funds. For the quarter ended June 2021, FPIs were net buyers to the tune of USD 0.68 billion compared with the net inflow of USD 7.64 billion was recorded during the quarter ended March 2021. While the second wave of the pandemic prompted overseas investors to turn negative on Indian equities in April and May as they sold net assets worth USD 1.29 billion and USD 0.39 billion, respectively, they came back strongly in June to pump in USD 2.36 billion as the situation turned favorable for them. However, FPIs turned cautious toward Indian equity markets again in July. The U.S. Fed’s hawkish statement that it might raise interest rates much earlier than assumed was the precursor for the change in their stance.

This triggered a risk-off in markets with the Dow and S&P 500 correcting by 1.1 per cent each on the 18th,” said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.Tapering is negative news for markets since it will eventually reduce the liquidity available in the financial system, he noted.“But the positive dimension is that the Fed is indicating tapering since economic growth revival is strong. If growth and earnings recovery is strong, markets are likely to stage a rebound after the initial jitters,” he noted.Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul were trading with heavy losses in mid-session deals amid mounting worries of the spread of delta variant of coronavirus in the region. However, equities in the US largely ended on a positive note in overnight trade.
