“We will take our battle for justice across India to awaken governments and law makers,” said a heartbroken Asha Devi, mother of December 16 gangrape victim Jyoti Singh, after Supreme Court on Monday rejected a plea against release of the juvenile convict in the case. Devi said notwithstanding the release of the juvenile convict on Sunday, she and her husband Badri Singh will continue their fight to ensure death penalty for rest of the four rapists who are currently lodged in Tihar jail. “Despite

our repeated pleas and demands for not setting the juvenile free, he has been released. We are dejected, shattered. But we will not stop and continue our fight to ensure that the other four rapists are hanged. We met with disappointment at every door, we are heart broken, but not crushed,”

2 / Dt. 22-12-2015, Tuesday Editors’ Picks tuesday, DECEMBER 22, 2015 In Salman Khan case, ineptitude on one side, wrong interpretation on the other Take your pick. Choice One: No one was driving the car. Choice Two: Salman Khan has the world’s first Google self-driving car. Choice Three: The car was drunk. The facetiousness hides one stark fact: The high court judgment absolving Salman of all charges is a travesty of justice. If you look at the judgment, the court did deliver a “guilty” verdict. Only, it was not against the Bollywood superstar. The court pronounced “guilty” for the police and the prosecution team of lawyers. The police, according to the court, did a shoddy job of investigation, while the prosecuting lawyers did a poor job of presenting their case. But as I understand the laws of contempt, it is permissible to criticise a judgment on the basis that the interpretation of the evidence was erroneous. In this case, in my opinion, it was gravely erroneous. The accident involving Salman’s Toyota Land Cruiser took place in September 2002. One person was killed and three badly injured. The people in the car were Salman himself, singer Kamaal Khan, and police constable Ravindra Patil, who was assigned the duty of being Salman’s bodyguard. Then, suddenly in March, after a full 13 years and just before the sessions court’s judgment, a certain Ashok Singh came forward to say that he was also in the car. Not only that, but he was driving it! It turned out that he was the Khan family driver for many years. The sessions court dismissed this out of hand when it pronounced Salman guilty and sentenced him to five years in jail. But the high court accepted the defence contention that Ashok Singh was not a desperate afterthought. Commonsense tells you if Ashok Singh was indeed driving the car, he would be the defence’s first witness, not its last. On the other side, Patil was the prosecution’s star witness. He had said in testimony recorded before a magistrate that not only was Salman driving, but that he was drunk. Unfortunately for the prosecution, Patil died well before the trial. His death was in peculiar circumstances — he was dismissed from the police and died in poverty. Isn’t it strange that the prosecution’s star witness was so mistreated by the police, instead of being protected and kept safe and healthy for the trial? That in itself is a subject matter for a separate inquiry. That apart, the sessions court found his recorded testimony reliable, while the high court found it not “entirely reliable”, whatever that means. Surely the fact that the defence didn’t summon Kamaal as their witness is clear indication that his testimony would have favoured the prosecution, perhaps confirming that Salman was driving the car?And so it goes: Ineptitude on one side, wrong interpretation on the other. The beneficiary: Salman Khan. The loser: Our justice system.

Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor’s ‘Ki And Ka’ to release on April 1, 2016

Agency | Los Angeles

Agency | Mumbai Director R Balki’s upcoming romantic comedy-drama, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Kapoor, will hit screens on April 1, 2016. The film follows the story of a young, married couple and also features cameos by megastar Amitabh Bachchan and wife Jaya. “Eros and R Balki’s

#Ki&Ka to release on 1 April 2016. Stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Arjun Kapoor with Amitabh & Jaya Bachchan in special appearance,” trade analayst Taran Adarsh posted on twitter. This is the first collaboration between Kareena and Arjun. The music of “Ki and Ka” has been composed by Ilaiyaraaja.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” shattered the domestic box office record with an estimated $238 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales through Sunday, a staggering debut that re-established the celebrated space saga as a global phenomenon under Walt Disney Co. The first “Star Wars” film in a decade took in a total of $517 million at box offices around the world, second only to the dinosaur film “Jurassic World”, which had the benefit of an opening weekend that included China, where “Force Awakens” won’t open for weeks. Financial and critical success for the film mark a victory for Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger’s strategy of acquiring

proven brands, including Pixar Animation and comic book powerhouse Marvel, to fuel Disney’s entertainment empire. Disney purchased “Star Wars” producer Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012 and is betting that big-budget films can draw customers even as viewers gravitate to online streaming and mobile viewing and theater attendance declines. Over the weekend, fans reveled in the chance to visit the “Star Wars” galaxy for the first time in a decade. Filmgoers dressed as Jedi or Sith, carried lightsabers and cheered when classic characters such as Princess Leia or Chewbacca appeared on screen. Theaters added showtimes to meet demand, Disney said. “Ju-

rassic World” opened in June with $208.8 million in the United States and Canada and a take of $525 million worldwide. “Force Awakens” is the seventh installment in the epic science-fiction franchise created by George Lucas in 1977. Disney plans four “Star Wars” movies through 2019, plus major expansions at its U.S. theme parks to incorporate the droids, spaceships and otherworldly creatures of the universe Lucas invented. “Force Awakens” toys, clothing, home accessories and video games already pervade stores ahead of Christmas. Nostalgia, plus a carefully planned, months-long release of film trailers and character profiles boosted interest.

Agency | Mumbai The grand finale round of the Miss Universe 2015 pageant turned out to be dramatic and chaotic as host Steve Harvey mistakenly took the name of Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez as the next Miss Universe. But soon he realised he had committed a blunder and named Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach as the actual winner of the crown. As expected, Wurtzbach was pleasantly shocked and couldn’t believe her ears when her name was eventually announced. There were as many as 80 contestants vying for the coveted Miss Universe title on Sunday. After beating others in rounds like national costume, swimsuit

and evening wear, beauties from the Philippines, Colombia and the US made it to the top three. Earlier while announcing the results, Miss US Olivia Jordan was placed third and Wurtzbach was announced as the first runner-up. Miss Colombia Ariadna Guiterrez jumped with joy after the host took her country’s name as the winner. She was crowned by another Colombian beauty --

Paulina Vega, who had clinched the crown in 2014. It could have been two Miss Universe titles in a row for Colombia but soon after Guiterrez took her first walk as the winner, the host admitted to have made a mistake in announcing the winners. “I will take the responsibility for this. It’s on the card. Don’t hold it against the ladies. Still a great night,” Harvey told the audience.

Agency | Tokyo Japan’s Toshiba Corp said on Monday it will cut nearly 7,000 consumer electronics jobs after a USD 1.3 billion accounting scandal, in an overhaul that will streamline the sprawling conglomerate into a company focused on chips and nuclear energy. Toshiba also said it would sell its television manufacturing plant in Indonesia, and that eventual job cuts spanning the entire PC-to-nuclear company could be over 10,000 including previously announced cuts and those seeking voluntary early retirement. Due to restructuring costs, which include the sale of its Indonesian TV plant, Toshiba said it expected a net loss of around 550 billion yen (USD 4.53 billion) in this fiscal year ending in March. “By implementing this plan, we would like to regain the trust of all stakeholders including shareholders and transform ourselves into a robust business,” it said in a statement. Toshiba confirmed in August that it overstated profits going back to fiscal 2008/09 by 155 billion yen.

Air France: Suspicious device on flight was a hoax

I just try and keep things as simple as possible, says Kane Williamson Agency | Hamilton

Agency | Nairobi The suspicious device discovered in the bathroom of an Air France flight was a hoax, the CEO of Air France said on Sunday. The Boeing 777 was heading to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris from Mauritius when its pilots requested an emergency landing early Sunday at Kenya’s coastal city of Mombasa. The device was made of cardboard, paper and a household timer, said Frederic Gagey, the head of Air France. “This object did not contain explosives,” said Gagey at a news conference in Paris. Gagey congratulated the crew for their cool-headed reaction to divert the plane. A safety check was carried out in the bathroom before the flight, he said. He denied any security failure in the flight, saying that passengers are checked and sometimes double-checked on flights. Six passengers are being questioned over the incident, said a Kenyan police official, who is part of the investigation and who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the press.

Agency | Madrid Gareth Bale scored four times as Real Madrid came from behind to beat nine-man Rayo Vallecano 10-2 in a wild game at the Santiago Bernabeu to close the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid to two points. Atletico missed the chance to move clear at the top on their own as they had captain Gabi sent-off in a 1-0 defeat at Malaga. Barca have a game in hand as they weren’t in La Liga action this

weekend after sealing the Club World Cup with a 3-0 win over River Plate in Japan earlier in the day. It is the first time in 55 years that a team has scored 10 goals in a La Liga game, however, the Madrid fans still voiced their disapproval towards under fire coach Rafael Benitez after Real found themselves 2-1 down inside 12 minutes. Red cards inside half an hour for Tito and Raul Baena opened the floodgates, though, as a double from Cristiano Ronaldo and a hat-trick for Karim

Benzema added to Bale’s most prolific day in three years as a Madrid player. “We conceded the goals early, but then the team reacted,” said Benitez. I am not going to judge the decisions of the referee, but from the sending-off the team did what it had to do, try to play well and score goals.” Madrid president Florentino Perez had restated his support for Benitez in midweek after rumours suggested he was one defeat away from the sack after losing 1-0 at Villarreal last weekend.

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum called him ‘The King’ but Kane Williamson swatted aside the praise after his record-breaking century capped a five-wicket victory in the second Test against Sri Lanka on Monday.
