Filmmaker Karan Johar’s remarks on intolerance started a politicial fight

Political drama over intolerance “We are in a tough country and to speak about one’s personal life in today’s time can land you in jail,” Karan Johar said at the ninth edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival Agency | Jaipur

Filmmaker Karan Johar’s remarks on intolerance started a politicial fight on Friday with the Congress accusing the Narendra Modi government of stifling freedom of expression and the BJP dismissing such criticism. “The talk about freedom of expression is the biggest joke I believe in the world. Democracy is the second biggest joke I think.” Johar had said at the ongoing Jaipur Literature Festival on Thursday. “I really wonder how are we really democratic? How is there freedom of expression? As

a filmmaker, I feel bound at every level be it what I put out on celluloid or what I say in print,” he added. Attacking the NDA government, Congress leader Manish Tewari said, “This goverment of Modi is against intellectuals. They are against liberal voices. The tension is increasing from everywhere. Other than Anupam Kher, who is a pawn for the government, all other artists, painters, filmmakers are saying that this government is against intellectuals.” Union minister Mahesh Sharma retaliated saying, “The whole world is see-

ing that India is the most tolerant country.” Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, too, rejected Johar’s statement. “Those who are raising questions on India’s tolerance have no knowledge about the country’s culture and traditions. They are illiterate. It is true that issues of intolerance crop up the moment elections are announced,” said Naqvi. Rubbishing their claims, Tewari said, “It is against every such behaviour that wants to take the liberal and all encompassing ideologies forward.” “If all other artists and actors and filmmakers and writers

are saying that this government is against intellectuals and is trying to curb the freedom of expression, then it must be true. Truth does not need

any evidence,” he said. In his conversation with Poonam Saxena who has penned his biography ‘An Unsuitable Boy’ and author-columnist Shobhaa

De, Johar said he felt he was living in a “tough country” where speaking about one’s personal life can land people behind the bars.

Dense fog engulfed Chandigarh on Friday morning with visibility reducing to 300 metres in some areas. Chandigarh recorded coldest day of the season with the maximum temperature recorded at 11

degrees Celsius, nine degrees below the season’s average. The minimum temperature was recorded 8.8 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature in Ambala and Karnal towns in Haryana were recorded at 10.3 and 10.6 degrees Celsius respectively on Thursday, making it the coldest day of the season there.

Cold grips north India: 35 trains Google’s free high-speed Wi-Fi cancelled, 14 delayed due to fog launched at Mumbai Central Station Agency | Mumbai

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu Friday launched a free high-speed public Wi-Fi service in collaboration with technology giant Google at Mumbai Central, the first station in the country to get such facility. Terming the facility as “world class”, Prabhu said around 100 busiest stations across the country will be brought under the free public Wi-Fi service by this year-end, making it

the world’s largest such project. “When I proposed the full-fledged (Railway) budget last year, I had vowed to improve ailing condition of Indian Railway, and

way officers, Google executives and passengers at the suburban railway station. Terming it as a “historic day”, the minister said that his government was trying hard to develop sustainable infrastructure and to improve safety and security of the passengers and bring financial stability to the entity. The project of providing free Wi-Fi connectivity at 400 railway stations across the country was announced last September during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Google headquarters in the US.

2 / Dt. 23-01-2016, Saturday Editors’ Picks saturday, JANUARY 23, 2016 India is just months away from deploying a regional alternative to GPS With the launch of the fifth payload of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) is almost set to deploy a secure and nationally owned alternative to GPS, which will cover all of India and a zone about 1,500 km beyond the national borders. After two more launches, India will join the small group of nations with their own satellite navigation systems. The US GPS was the trailblazing system with a global footprint, followed by the Russian GLONASS and French DORIS. By 2020, the European Union’s Galileo and China’s BeiDou satellite arrays are expected to be globally deployed. BeiDou is still a regional system, and the IRNSS marks India’s first, confident and very necessary step into this field. It will have two services, a public access system and an encrypted variant for the military. Indeed, while satellite navigation systems are generally celebrated for improving accuracy in conjunction with other services like GPS — DORIS can drill down to millimetric levels, which is valuable in the earth sciences — security will be the initial deliverable of the IRNSS. The need for secure communications is understood in our hacker-infested world and, by extension, so is the need to own communication satellites. However, the need to own secure positioning services should be equally obvious. A major geopolitical incident could render foreign GPS systems hard to access, or impossible to trust. The extra accuracy which the IRNSS promises will assume significance for future developments like the Internet of Things, to revolutionise logistics and inventory management, for instance, and perhaps enhance telemetry services. The Isro is taking a significant step with the IRNSS, helping to future-proof the nation from the perspective of the security and accuracy of data. In an information-hungry world, it’s serving the national priority of generating and owning reliable data on the neighbourhood.

Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 review: Airlift: As swift as a Dirty, naked, tasteless Hollywood ‘rescue thriller’ Agency | New Delhi

Akshay, sporting his saltn-pepper beard, gives the role all the gravitas he has and turns things believable. Nimrat is her usual easy presence on camera and turns all fiery with assurance when a scene makes such histrionic demands of her. For a long time, Hindi cinema was happy with the Indian within India — living in its villages and cities. Then it started taking the hero-heroine abroad in films that felt like paid holidays for shooting song sequences. Next, Bollywood began focusing on the Indian living abroad, the NRI whose heart and mind seemed to reside back in the motherland.

Now, it has moved another step ahead. Ee have Indians caught bang in the middle of geo-political crises: from tracking the Taliban in Afghanistan in Kabul Express to being caught in the civil wartorn Syria in Phantom. Airlift is also about Indians caught in a conflict

zone, only that it is based on true incident. It is about the evacuation of 1,70,000 Indian expatriates stuck in Kuwait after its invasion by Iraq in 1990. Believed to be the largest civil evacuation ever, it was conducted over 59 days involving 488 Air India/ Indian Airlines flights.

Jugni Movie Review

Agency | New Delhi

Mustard fields do occasionally loom in the backdrop - that is inevitable - but Jugni has a glow that instantly sets it apart from the average Punjab film that Bollywood produces. It looks, feels and sounds different. It has no Bhangra routines, no wedding songs, no inane lyrics, and no semi-clad floozies. What the beautifully nuanced Jugni film has is a meaningful, if somewhat thin, plot peopled with eminently relatable characters. The story is in the main set in a tangible world where Sufi poetry and music hold sway. The songs and scenes are rooted

in the soil. First-time writer-director Shefali Bhushan conjures up a specific place and culture with admirable precision. The film’s opening sequence itself, which unfolds with a lilting folksy song (in the voice of Vishal Bhardwaj) in the background, sets the

stage for the free-flowing tale. The superb musical composition and the unfussy unveiling of the essence of the story and its milieu - a Mumbai composer arrives in rural Punjab looking for an unsung folk singer - immediately establish the film’s texture and tenor.

Agency | Mumbai Arjun Kapoor is all set to make a sizzling debut on the television and boy, aren’t we excited! He just put up a new poster of Khatron Ke Khiladi and looks like he looks totally into his role as a tough taskmaster host. He has a slightly devilish grin on his face and looks like he is ready for a fight! Contestants of the show are in the background, looking unsure of what challenge the show holds for them. The idea of Arjun as a host of this reality show

generated a lot of mixed reactions. The show stars this weekend and it is left for us to see if the Ki and Ka actor manages to win us over with his hosting skills. Before Arjun, the Airlift actor Akshay Kumar has hosted the show and people loved him. Arjun really has to be super awesome to fill Akshay’s shoes. Action director Rohit Shetty has also hosted the show last year. This year looks promising for Arjun as he has R Balki’s film coming up with Kareena Kapoor Khan.

The pre-look of Allu Arjun’s Sarrainodu is out and its giving instant goose bumps to the onlookers.Announcing about the first look release date January 26th, Allu Arjun must be clicked in the gap where he is busy crushing the goons with a heavy Kettlebell. The bloodmarks on kettlebell, Bunny’s bi-

is as stylish and sturdy as always and Boyapati raised the bar to top with just the prelook. Awaiting the first look !!!

Then he says something to the effect of ‘Haan, log mere papa ko bhi Shakti Kapoor hi samajhte hain.’ This is probably the best attempt at humour in a film that takes the dirty route to establishing the premise of a porn-com – which, incidentally, is what the film promoters have been calling it. Kanhaiyya (Tusshar Kapoor) is a good-for-nothing guy who gets kicked out of his house by his business tycoon father (who else? Shakti Kapoor). Meghna Naidu (Kaliyon Ka Chaman, remember?) is Tusshar’s aunt and would-be stepmother. Rocky (Aftab Shivdasani)

is his ‘chuddy-buddy’, literally. Very soon, Kanhaiyya’s grandmother catches Rocky getting his rocks off to pornography – a development that kills her, quite literally. This prompts them to meet their Thailand-based friend Mickey (Krushna), who would rather refer to his place of residence as ‘Thai-land’. Ok, let’s not get there. So, the two

end up joining the porn business, which recreates popular Bollywood films as per their requirements. For example, Singham becomes Lingam and Kick turns into Lick, so on and so forth. But Kanhaiyya’s life turns upside down when his eyes land on Shaalu (Mandana Karimi), the daughter of Surya Karjatya (Darshan Jariwala).

in his misguided attempt to make what he surely believes is a tribute to an entire gender, David O Russell lost sight of only thing he shouldn’t have: Joy. The movie is about Joy, she of the “one in particular.” More precisely, it’s about Joy Mangano, who, in the ‘90s invented the

given the privacy that is required at this time to move forward in a dignified manner.” The couple has maintained that this split is a result of ‘growing apart over the years’. Although there are many rumours of the couple separating, the rumours got stronger when Adhuna was nowhere to be seen with Farhan during the release of his latest film Wazir as well as Daboo Ratnani’s calendar

launch. The couple has always been all praises for each other. In an earlier interview with HT, Farhan had said, “I believe that for any relationship or marriage to be successful, the couple has to be great friends. It is also important to keep reinventing your friendship. Besides being my wife, Adhuna is a great friend and I know I can share my deepest secrets with her.”

Joy review: Even Jennifer Lawrence can’t mop up this mess Agency | New Delhi

Before you see a single frame of Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, her third collaboration with director David O Russell, a pompous title card declares it to be a film “Inspired by the true stories of daring women. One in particular.” To the movie’s credit, at least it’s upfront about not being a run-of-the-mill biopic. There’s no ‘based on a true story’ nonsense here. But in roughly two hours, you’ll realise that the best indication as to Joy’s impending and frankly inevitable derailment came at this very moment. Because

Agency | Mumbai Indian stock markets rose 2 per cent on Friday posting their biggest single-day percentage gain since October as hints of more stimulus measures from the European Central Bank lifted global markets. Global markets were also supported after oil prices rose 5 per cent on Friday. Although higher crude prices are not good for India’s current account balance, they are helping shore up risk sentiment in global assets. Analysts said whether shares can gain further would depend on corporate earnings results and developments in China, where markets have remained volatile over concerns about economic growth. “Sustainability (of market gains) would depend on quarterly earnings performance and no negative news flow from China,” said Gaurang Shah, vice president at Geojit BNP Paribas.

War of words between TRAI Facebook over Net Neutrality

A patient Roger Federer weathered a second set storm from Grigor Dimitrov before overcoming the Bulgarian challenger to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open on Friday, recording his 300th Grand Slam win in the process. The 17-time Major winner and third seed won 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in two hours, 40 minutes under the closed roof on Rod Laver Arena and will next face Belgium’s 15th seed David Goffin, who overcame good friend Dominic Thiem of Austria 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (2), 7-5. because of the similarity in their playing styles, to 5-0. Last year Federer was ambushed in the third round by Italian Andreas Seppi, but he made no mistake this time at the same stage against Dimitrov. But it wasn’t an entirely convincing display from the four-time Australian Open winner, who committed an uncharacteristic 55 unforced efforts, much more than Dimitrov’s 44. “It was a difficult position for me

after losing the second set and Grigor was playing well. I thought I was struggling a little bit,” Federer said. “I didn’t feel it was really happening out there and it was an important start for me to the third set. “Thankfully I got the early break and I was able to stay in the lead and everything started to come back, the serve, my footwork. It was complicated, but those matches are even nicer to win, I must say.”

Agency | New Delhi A day before the open house discussion on differential pricing of data, a full-scale war of words has broken out between telecom regulator TRAI and social network Facebook over the Net neutrality debate. Terming Facebook’s action as diversionary, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said the whole consultation exercise has been reduced to “a crudely majoritarian and orchestrated poll”. “Neither the spirit nor the letter of a consultative process warrants such an interpretation which, if accepted, has dangerous ramifications for policy-making in India,” TRAI said in its letter to Facebook on January 18. According to the regulator, the campaign by Facebook to defend its free Internet platform Free Basics in India is “wholly misplaced” as “the consultation paper is on differential pricing for data services and not on any particular product or service”.

Suresh Raina: I am India’s highest run-getter batting at no. 3 position Agency | New Delhi

While the thumping ODI series loss leaves the India ODI team Down Under bereft of any positives, the forthcoming threematch T20 International series will provide a true picture as to how prepared MS Dhoni & Co are for the World T20 starting in March. Experts reckon Dhoni needs to settle his unsettled mind. His batting conundrum has certainly not gone down well with his most-trusted player, Suresh Raina. Although Raina would not like to bat below No 4, the southpaw admitted that frequent changes in the batting position “definitely” affects the mindset. It could be one of the reasons for losing his ODI spot as well. “It would be better if they (team management) can tell me at least 10 overs before (I got out to bat) about my batting position. It is important to know your strengths. It helps in formulating your own plans

Although Raina generally bats at No 4 for India in T20s, the southpaw may not be willing to sacrifice his batting position this time with Yuvraj Singh back in the T20 team. Yuvraj is essentially India’s No 4 batsman in the limited overs format. Refreshed, recharged

and back-in-form, Raina minced no words when it came to speaking about his preferred batting position in T20s. “I would love to bat at No 3. I have always batted at No 3 in the Indian Premier League. I am the highest run-getter in that position (471 in 15 international innings). “Although T20 is all about playing big shots, I would look to run hard between the wickets in Australia where the grounds are much bigger. I will look to capitalise on twos and threes there,” he said.

India’s Sania Mirza and her Swiss partner Martina Hingis extended their unbeaten streak to 31 matches as they kicked off their Australian Open on a winning note to progress through to the second round on Thursday. Sumitra Mahajan to inaugurate Speakers’ Crumbling infrastructure at Vadodara’s SSG hospital: Top medical officer takes stock conference today in Gandhinagar Additional Director of Vadodara

Sunvilla News | Gandhinagar

A two-day conference of presiding officers of legislative bodies in India would be inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan here on Friday. The conference is part of a three-day conference of presiding officers and secretaries of the legislative bodies. The conference of secretaries of the legislative bodies was held in Gandhinagar on Thursday. The conference is an annual event, held in different cities of the country on a rota basis, to strengthen functioning of the legislative bodies. Addressing the media about the conference,

Gujarat Speaker Ganpat Vasava on Thursday said this year the presiding officers would hold discussions on two issues — the role of MPs and MLAs in strengthening people’s faith in democratic institutes and importance of Speakers’ research measures to help MLAs; and remedies to ensure presence of MPs and MLAs

during the sessions of legislative bodies and to hold discussion over improving quality of House debates. Vasava also noted that the last time Gujarat held the event was way back in 1992. He said more than 350 officers of legislative bodies were expected to participate in the two conferences. So far, 22 legislative assem-

blies and six legislative councils have confirmed their participation. The Gujarat Speaker said as per tradition, except for the inauguration of the Speakers’ Conference, rest of the sessions would be held “in-camera”. The inauguration ceremony of Speakers’ conference would also be attended by Governor O P Kohli and CM Anandiben Patel. The participants would also take part in cultural events in the evenings. HC notice to AAP govt on CBI plea against order to return documents Correspondent | New Delhi

The Delhi High Court on Thursday issued a notice to the AAP government on a CBI plea challenging a special court order directing the agency to return some of the documents seized during a raid at the offices of Rajendra Kumar, principal secretary to chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. The high court, however, refrained from passing any interim order after senior counsel Dayan Krishnan appearing for the Delhi government opposed the plea saying it had not been heard. Posting the matter for further hearing on January 25, Justice PS Teji sought a response from Kumar on the agency’s plea seeking quashing of the special court’s Wednesday order. In its plea, the CBI said the special court failed to appreciate that the Delhi government obtained attested photocopies of the docu-

ments seized and thus the order to return them was “wholly misconceived”. “The seized documents in question are crucial and vital as evidence to prove and establish beyond all shades of doubt, the unholy nexus between the accused persons and throw light on the allegation of criminal conspiracy and criminal misconduct,” the petition filed through the CBI’s standing counsel Sonia Mathur said. The petition said “many relevant witnesses are yet to be exam-

ined in light of the documents in question” and the special court order “has given undue advantage to the Delhi government”. “Any disclosure of evidence collected so far to any person, whether accused or a non party i.e. Delhi government in the instant case, would have prejudiced the larger interest of the justice and fair investigation,” it added. The original documents were necessary for seeking expert opinion to establish the authorship of the contents, it said.
