after news of the suicide spread. The farmer from Rajasthan committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in full public view just before Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal was to speak at the AAP rally in Delhi even as appeals from those around to desist from taking the extreme step had

fallen on deaf ears. Gajendra Singh, from Dausa in Rajasthan, climbed a neem tree in Jantar Mantar, a stone's throw away from Parliament, the venue of anti-land bill rally, climbed a tree, put his "gamcha" (towel) around his neck and also tied it to a branch. Officials said that at least 26 people have been killed in Purnia, six in Madhepura and at least two have reportedly been killed in Bhagalpur districts. The death toll could rise as these

are just the initial reports coming out from the affected areas, said an official of the state disaster management department. The Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar told journalists that he would be taking an aerial survey on Wednesday to the affected districts and then would make an assessment of the loss and damage in the affected districts. “I’ll be in apposition to let you know

the more details on it once I’ll return from visiting the affected areas”, said Nitish Kumar. Indian monsoon rains seen below average in 2015 - govt Agency : New Delhi India's monsoon rains could be below average in 2015 due to an impact of El Nino weather pattern, which can bring on a dry spell in the region, the weather office said on Wednesday. Rains are expected to be 93 percent of a long-term average, Earth Science Minister Harsh Vardhan said, after releasing the forecast of the India Meteorological Department. India's weather office defines average, or normal, rainfall as between 96 percent and 104 percent of a 50-year average of 89 cm for the entire four-month

season. The latest forecast raises concerns for output prospects for major summer crops such as rice, cane, soybean and cotton in the country that is a key global producer of these farm

commodities. Indian monsoon rains were hit by El Nino weather pattern in 2009, when the four-month long monsoon season turned the driest in nearly four decades.

Why farmer's death at AAP rally is a blot on our conscience Ten thousand people, including the Chief Minister of Delhi and his entire cabinet, security guards, media and dozens of policemen couldn't save the life of a man in the heart of the capital of India at an event being telecast live to millions of viewers. Nobody bothered, nobody cared. The show went on; only a life came to an end. If this isn't a national shame, a collective failure and a blot on our collective conscience, Gajendra Singh Rajput lost his life in vain. Predictably, collective hand-wringing has started, politicians in their crisp linen shirts with Chinese collars and starched kurtas have begun beating their breasts, blaming their rivals and visiting hospitals, outrage in TV studios will follow, and for a few angry hours tweeple will throw hashtags at each other. For a few days, a week if he is lucky, Rajput’s death will be talked about; his live suicide would be compared with Peepli Live's Naththa or Rajeev Goswami, who set himself ablaze to protest the Mandal Commission recommendations. And then the tragedy vampirism of politicians, media and their followers will end. But, it is unlikely that in this entire din anybody will ask the right questions about Rajput’s death. Sambit Patra has every right to look grim and mourn that Arvind Kejriwal should have done something to stop Rajput from killing himself instead of continuing with his bhaashan (speech). Yes, he has every right to berate Kejriwal for doing exactly what Patra himself shamelessly attempted: politicisation of the tragic incident. But, will Patra first ask the Rajasthan chief minister why a farmer needs to go to Delhi and commit suicide in Vasundhara Raje’s raj? Dausa, the home district of Rajput, is just an hour’s drive from Rajasthan’s capital Jaipur. For the past one month, the local media has been continuously writing about the damage to crops in Rajasthan due to unseasonal rain and hailstorm in March. According to government estimates, 33 districts in the state were hit by calamitous weather; crops in around nearly 21000 villages were destroyed. Girdwari (field report) prepared by district collectors, estimated a crop loss to the tune of Rs 8,57,474 crore in the state. Apart from this 41 people lost their lives. If a farmer just an hour away from government help is forced to kill himself, shouldn't Patra first be raising questions about Raje government’s sensitivity and competence? Shouldn’t he be worrying about people in the other 21000 villages? Kumar Vishwas and Somnath Bharati have the right to wail that the suicide was a suniyojit (planned) act to tarnish his party’s image and sabotage the rally. But only a ‘sensitive’ poet like Vishwas can go the egregious extent of imagining that a father of three children would agree to sacrifice his life just to demean a politician. It is despicable of AAP leaders to claim that a man broke his neck just to spite Kejriwal. In TV footage before he committed suicide, Rajput was seen holding the AAP party symbol, a jhadoo, and shouting slogans. These are strong reasons to suggest that Rajput was an AAP supporter—if he wasn’t, he wouldn't have carried the AAP's symbol to his martyrdom.

Brilliant Bayern crush Porto 6-1 to reach semis Agency : Munich Majestic Bayern Munich destroyed Porto 6-1 to charge into the Champions League semi-finals 7-4 on aggregate on Tuesday and remain on track for a treble in Pep Guardiola’s 100th competitive game in charge. The five-time European champions, who lost 3-1 in the first leg last week, showed no sign of nerves as they dismantled the hapless Portuguese with an impressive attacking display for a fourth straight last four spot. Despite missing Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and David Alaba among others, Bayern took the initiative from the start. It is about winning just like at Barcelona. We played a different game. We knew Porto better after the first game. Now we have to fight otherwise we will not

Hopefully World Cup experience will help India: Sourav Ganguly Agency : New Delhi Former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly on Tuesday said the experience garnered from the recently concluded World Cup in Australia should help the Indians become a better side. Ganguly was the skipper when India reached the finals in 2003, but lost to Australia at Johannesburg. "I think they were good (the Indian team in the World Cup). They got better as the tour went on and learned a lot in Australia. Hopefully they will learn from it and become a better side," Ganguly on the sidelines of an event for CocaCola India, NDTV and UN-Habitat's Support My School programme, which he has lent support to. Asked about the present Indian side, Ganguly said it was a young team. "There are some good players and we will be a good side if we are properly managed and

looked after well." Asked to compare the three Australian World Cup winning sides of 2003, 2007 and 2015, he replied: "We can't really compare sides. You don't compare eras." "Aus-

tralia is a great cricketing nation. They won the World Cup in 2007 and they had a blip in 2011 when they were not one of the best sides. "But the best thing for them is that they recovered in a four year time to win another World Cup. That's what good cricketing sides are. You just don't leave it with one win or a couple of wins," said the 42-year-old.

Kolkata cricketer Rahul Ghosh's condition stable Agency : Kolkata The condition of cricketer Rahul Ghosh, who was hospitalised after sustaining a head injury during a local league match, is stable and he seems to be recovering well, but the doctors at a city hospital on Wednesday said they would still keep him under observation in ICU. orean electronics giant,

Samsung, has come forward to establish an electronics hardware manufacturing unit in Hyderabad with an investment of $100 million (approximately Rs 630 crore), according to Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhara Rao. "Samsung is one of the many electronics majors who have evinced interest to set up shop in the state. Telangana has a large scope to play host to electronics hardware industry," he said. After inaugurating Mahindra & Mahindra's extended manufacturing unit at Zaheerabad in Medak district of Telangana on Wednesday, Rao said the state had overcome the problem of power cuts and there was no load shedding

now. "We invite all the industries across the country to establish units here with an assurance of uninterrupted power supply," the chief minister said, adding the new industrial policy and 24-hour power supply to industries would make Telangana an attractive destination for investments. "A legislation has already been passed on TSIPass, a single-window clearance programme, to be monitored personally by the CM office and grant approvals within 15 days. The hassle-free single-window, without a single grill, will be implemented shortly," he said. Rao said his government had reduced the input VAT (value-added tax) from the earlier 14.5 per cent, to five per cent, for M&M's Zaheerabad plant as a special case, and a government order on the same was issued on April 21.

hand, lost to Delhi in their previous encounter and are currently lying sixth on the table with three losses and a single win. The defeat against Delhi was moralecrushing to say the least, given that Hyderabad fell short by a mere four runs. Considering the situation that the team is currently in, the SRH think-tank has much to sort out in the lineup which relies heavily on foreign imports as far as impact players are concerned. Their batting seems fragile if the opening duo of skipper David Warner and

Shikhar Dhawan fail to give a good start. Hyderabad's bowling is spearheaded by South African star Dale Steyn and a lot would depend on what he can extract from his four overs along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar. KKR, meanwhile, have been performing quite well and in the previous match, it was the bowling which did the job for the title-holders. The pace duo of Umesh Yadav and Morne Morkel combined well to restrict Delhi and made the job easy for the team's batsmen.

and to make matters worse, KXIP lost Virender Sehwag in just the second over. It took their most experienced and consistent batsman to pull off a couple of crucial innings to see them home and end RR's winning streak. The same batsman who was benched for the first four matches. The same batsman who made it to the starting eleven because of an injury to captain George Bailey. The same batsman who played just two matches last season. The same batsman who was the highest run-getter in the inaugural edition of the IPL.

Rahane and Watson added 95 for the first wicket against Kings XI Punjab after adding 144 together against Chennai Super Kings in their previous game. Rahane went on to top score for RR with 74 from 54 balls while Watson made 45 from 35 balls. In an interview with the IPL's official website Rahane said that he and Watson strike is rotated keeping in mind who is playing the big shots. "We focus on building a partner-

ship and we know that both of us are batting in a good rhythm," Rahane said. Further, he adds that they do not set targets before the match, especially if its a slow wicket, as it puts them under pressure. "I told him that if we maintained the same positive intent with which we were batting, through the 20 overs, then we would get

10-15 runs more than what we would aim at otherwise," says Rahane. Talking about his intent to score big for the team when in form, Rahane emphasizes on keeping 'things as simple as possible'. "I start from scratch in each innings and play as the situation demands," says Rahene. He believes that the bowler will commit a mis-

take at some point of time and anticipating that and being ready makes a difference. The stand between Watson and Rahane set up RR's final total of 191 but KXIP tied the score with a four from the last ball of their innings before going on to win the game in the Super Over thanks to some excellent hitting by Shaun Marsh. Finally, touching on their first loss of the season, Rahane says it hasn't lowered the team's confidence and they look forward to dominate again in the coming matches. "In T20 an odd result doesn't go your way; it is important that as we a team we play all the 40 overs with 100 percent commitment. We believe in commitment, result is the end thing; it is important to put in the full effort.

Protests continue as Vadodara’s over 300 displaced families yet to get their homes

Correspondent, Vadodara

The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC), which has not yet given the allotment letters to the over 300 Muslim families it displaced from Kalyannagar in November last, is reluctant now to give them homes in the Sayajipura under JNNURM scheme, leaving the families in the lurch. The VMC had conducted the

draw for the EWS homes in Sayajipura for 340 families on April 8, under intense pressure, and later faced protests from the residents and builders on the prospect of Muslims moving into the Sayajipura neighbourhood. After committing to relocating the families to Sayajipura on Tuesday, VMC Commissioner H S Patel offered to work out an “alternative”

following “representations” from residents of the area opposing the move of the Muslim families. Under pressure to keep Muslims out of Sayajipura, the VMC is taking a back step on its word of allotting JNNURM homes to 340 families who have been homeless since the November demolitions. On a sweltering Tuesday afternoon, young children from Kalyannagar, accompanied by representatives met municipal commissioner, urging him to allot homes by May 1 to the families so that the students are able to enrol themselves in the primary schools in their vicinity for the upcoming academic year.

‘Kuno expansion must to house lions’ Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

The Union government has admitted in the Lok Sabha that Madhya Pradesh will have to enlarge sanctuary size in order to translocate Asiatic lions to Kuno-Palpur from Gujarat's Sasan Gir. According to the original project prepared for the translocation, a sanctuary area of around 700 sq km was required. The Gujarat government made it clear in a meeting in February that Madhya Pradesh will have to first satisfy the requirement of creating the adequate sanctuary size before even talking about moving lions from Gir. Kuno-Palpur is currently spread over 349 sq km. The statement about the required enlargement was made by the environment and forests minister, Prakash Javdekar, in

reply to a question from Madhya Pradesh MP Jyotiraditya Scindia. Javdekar stated that an expert committee had been formed to crystallize a plan for the translocation of lions in accordance with the guidelines issued by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Gujarat officials pointed out that this was for the first time that the Union government had accepted that the KunoPalpur sanctuary needed to

be enlarged. Officials said that Madhya Pradesh was dragging its feet on the expansion as it will have to relocate several big villages and even those villages which have been rehabilitated in the vicinity of the sanctuary. The officials said Madhya Pradesh has been claiming that the buffer area and the sanctuary space together accounted for 700 sq km, but were silent about the declaring the zone as a sanctuary.

had sought 10-day remand of the accused after they were brought to Ahmedabad from Vadodara after their police remand period got over. ED charged them with violation of money laundering laws and sought their remand on the ground that many details regarding the log-in IDs for a website being operated for betting in the UK were to be extracted from the accused. Besides, ED said that it wanted to find out the involvement of various police officials in this racket and refrained to name the suspects. Its counsel submitted that since the investigation was at a nascent stage, revelation of names of highranking officials might hamper the probe. ED's counsel also submitted that the information related to hawala transactions to other

countries, including Pakistan, was yet to be ascertained and this could be done through custodial interrogation only. The betting racket was busted by ED on March 19, when it raided a farmhouse in Vadodara and detained people. Gujarat police have been on their toes ever since Patel and Mala gave confessional statements on oath before ED officials. The statements revealed names of lower rung officials; the state government was later compelled to suspend five policemen, including two police inspectors - Jayesh Brahmbhatt and M N Saiyed. It was speculated that at least four Gujarat cadre IPS officers were involved in this racket, and top ranking police officials continued to trade charges against one another.

Eyewitness in hit-and-run case turns hostile again Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

The hostile eyewitness in the BMW hit-and-run case, Lalit Gupta, once again did a volte-face and said that he was pressurized by police and mediapersons to speak on television channel as per the script. Gupta accused police, mediapersons and relatives of the deceased boys of pressurizing him to speak in certain manner before the news channel. Disowning his own interview given before a local news channel as a scripted one, Gupta reiterated that he had never seen accused Vismay Shah on the place of accident. In his interview recorded two days after the incident, Gupta had claimed to have identified Vismay Shah as the driver. Gupta, a friend of Shivam Dave and Rahul Patel who were killed in the accident on late evening of Febraury 25, 2013 in Vastrapur, had

turned hostile last year. He refused to identify Vismay before the court after he had categorically told the cops that Vismay had come out of his car and said 'sorry' to him for the accident. After Gupta turned hostile, Rahul's father wanted him to be examined on the basis of his interview before a local channel for his extra-judicial confession. Gujarat high court directed the trial court to recall Gupta for re-examination and ordered for further probe regarding veracity of the electronic evidence. On Tuesday, when prosecutor Praveen Trivedi asked about the interview, Gupta refused to having remembered any such interview ever given to a news channel. When the interview was played on a screen in courtroom, Gupta conceded that he had given the interview, but again feigned ignorance about the content.
