country, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take immediate action on the supply of “Liposomal Amphotericin-B”, an essential drug to treat Mucormycosis. In a letter to the prime minister, Gandhi writes: “I understand that Liposomal Amphotericin-B is absolutely essential for treatment of Mucormycosis. However there are reports of its acute scarcity in the market. I would request you to kindly take immediate action in this matter.” India recorded over 2.57 lakh new

covid 19 cases in the last 24 hours ending 8 am Saturday, taking India’s total infections to over 2.62 crore. Children can get and spread Covid infection’: Centre clarifies 3 points amid 3rd wave concerns Children are not immune from Covid-19 infection but symptoms are minimum, the Centre said on Saturday. Agency News: New Delhi Amid concerns over a probable third wave of the Coronavirus pandemic, the Centre on Saturday said children are not immune from the infection, but the impact is minimal. “If children get affected by Covid, either there will be no symptoms or there will be minimal symptoms. They do not require hospitalisation generally,” Niti Aayog (health) member VK Paul said on Saturday, during the press briefing of the Union health ministry. Explaining three points about Covid-19 infection among children,

Dr Paul said that children are not immune from this infection and they can infect others but children do not generally suffer from severe infection. Health infrastructure should be ramped up to treat Covid-19 among children, but it is most important to not let them become a part of the transmission chain in the first place, Dr Paul said. “Some facts are clear in front of us. Children can be infected and they can be infected to quite an extent. It can’t be said with certainty that the infection among children is comparatively less. For example, the DecemberJanuary serosurvey revealed

that the seropositivity rate among children and older is almost the same,” Dr Paul said. Children account for about 3-4 per cent of hospital admission, in both India and the rest of the world, he said adding special attention should be on those between the age of 10 and 12 years as they are very mobile. As the ongoing second wave of the pandemic is gradually coming under control with a steady fall in the number of daily positive cases and in the positivity rate, concerns over a third wave have been expressed by experts, state governments. It has also been apprehended that this possible third wave

Mixing different Covid-19 vaccines theoretically possible, says Centre A recent UK study has found that it is safe to mix doses of different types of vaccines, but there will be many side effects, the study has revealed. “It is plausible. Agency News: New Delhi It is scientifically possible that an individual gets the first dose of one vaccine and the second dose of another vaccine, but it will take time to decide whether it can be recommended, the Centre has said. A recent UK study has found that it is safe to mix doses of different types of vaccines, but there will be many side effects, the study has revealed. “It is plausible. But there need to be more studies. It can’t be said definitively that mixing of doses can be practised.

There is no robust scientific evidence. Only time will tell whether it will be done in future or not, It will depend on international studies, World Health Organization findings etc. Our experts are also continuously studying,” Niti Aayog (health) member VK Paul said on Saturday. “One shot of one type produces antibodies and the second shot from another will increase that. Scientifically, there is no problem,” he added. Covishield and Covaxin are the two vaccines being administered in the country.

UK government study has reportedly found. The Oxford/ AstraZeneca two-dose vaccine is also being produced by the Serum Institute of India as Covishield and being administered among the adult population in India to protect against the deadly virus. The UK findings are said to be based on data from Public Health England (PHE) and have also revealed that the two doses provide 87 per cent protection from the B.117 variant, first discovered in Kent region of England and also considered highly transmissible With black fungus cases rising in Uttarakhand, it was declared a notifiable disease in the state under the Epidemic Act, 1897 on Saturday. So far, 64 people have been infected with black fungus in the state and of them, four have died.

Both the vaccines consist of two doses, the second dose of which is known as the booster dose. In its several advisories, the health ministry has repetitively cautioned that the second dose of the same vaccine should be taken. The study which says mixing two doses is safe was conducted over around 2,000 volunteers and in the mix and match approach, they were given one Oxford vaccine shot and another Pfizer; another combination of Moderna and Novavax was also tried. The trial was not aimed at finding

out whether a combination of two different doses is effective in preventive Covid or not. Only the immune response of the volunteers was tested and the adverse reactions were short-lived. There has been no such study yet in India mixing Covaxin and Covishield. According

to the latest findings, the first dose of these two vaccines has different effectiveness. Covishield’s first dose offers more protection than Covaxin’s first dose and hence the second dose of Covishield can be delayed to 12 to 16 weeks, the Centre has recently said.

may impact children. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a recent meeting with state and district officials, has asked them to collect data on the infection transmission and severity among youth and children. Earlier, the Maharashtra government said it started preparing for the third wave of the pandemic and started setting up paediatric Covid wards for children. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal too said children.

“Take Immediate Action”: Sonia Gandhi To PM On Black Fungus Drug Shortage Several thousand coronavirus patients in the country have contracted Mucormycosis, a deadly and aggressive fungal infection, compounding the country’s troubles as it reels from the pandemic. Agency News: New Delhi Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi cited the acute shortage of vital drug Amphotericin-B - needed to treat Mucormycosis, dubbed Black Fungus, and underscored the need to “take immediate action” to remedy the situation. Several thousand coronavirus patients in the country have contracted Mucormycosis, a deadly and aggressive fungal infection, compounding the country’s troubles as it reels from the pandemic. The illness, the Congress leader pointed out, is not covered in Ayushman Bharat - scheme that provides free health insurance to India’s poor and marginalised families and most other health insurance products“I would request you [PM Modi] to kindly take immediate action on this matter to bring relief to the large number of patients being

afflicted by Mucormycosis,” Ms Gandhi said in the letter. The government, Ms Gandhi said, has asked states to declare Mucormycosis an epidemic under the Epidemic Diseases Act. This means all confirmed or suspected cases of black fungus, a condition seen in recovering Covid patients, have to be reported to the Health Ministry. Ms Gandhi said it would mean that there must be adequate production and assured supply of essential medicines to treat it, and cost-free patient care for those in need of treatment.“In recent times a new challenge in the form of a fungal infection namely mucormycosis has emerged and is reported from many states among COVID-19 patients especially those on steroid therapy and deranged sugar control,” Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal said in a letter to states on Friday. The Union Health Ministry on Friday said licence has been given to five more manufactures for production of Amphotericin-B and they will start producing.

SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Vaccination: Perfect On Paper, Disastrous On Ground India has four decades of experience in running a national immunisation programme for children and pregnant women. It has successfully conducted large-scale mass vaccinationdrives for many years for polio elimination. Therefore, there was every reason to believe itcould deliver Covid-19 vaccines efficiently; however, the ongoing drive in India is faltering (and even that is an understatement). The initial challenge of vaccine hesitancy was soon replaced by that of short supply (from early April onwards); with the opening of Covid-19 vaccination for all adults in the 18-44 age group, everyone, including those above 45 years, is finding it difficult to get vaccinated. Thedaily vaccination rate has come down to around two million doses, nearly half the vaccination rate at its peak in April. As per the vaccine distribution formula developed by the Union government and shared with the Supreme Court, for nearly 600 million people in the 18-44 age group, for May, the number of vaccine doses available (to be purchased by the state governments) will be around 20 million (another 20 million will be available to private hospitals). Vaccine manufacturers are not able to supply vaccines to states. The outcome is that many states have either not started vaccinations for those in this age group or have halted it due to a shortage of supply. People are finding it difficult to book a slot on the CoWin portal — the government IT application for vaccination— and there is a real risk of vaccine inequity, where those without access to smartphones and the internet, may not get a shot for a long while. An elementary measure of performance of a wellfunctioning vaccination programme (or anyhealth programme) is that the people eligible for vaccination (or health services) get it promptly. This doesn’t seem to be happening at the moment and demands the urgent attention of those at the highest levels of policymaking and implementation. A successful vaccination drive is the outcome of assured supply, simplified policies and an adaptive delivery approach. An assured vaccine supply is the first and absolute essential before the launch of the programme. If supplies are limited, doses available have to be used for vaccination of the identified priority groups, with phased openings for additional population groups. All countries across the world first secured vaccine supply and then opened up the vaccination in a graded manner for various population groups. The UnitedStates, the United Kingdom and the European Union started to secure supplies by themiddle of 2020.India seems to have erred at many steps in this process. It placed the first order with vaccine manufacturers, just a few days before the launch of the vaccination drive on January 16. Nearly 940 million people are eligible for vaccination and the current total vaccine production in India is 70-80 million doses a month. A few weeks ago, the Centre placed fresh orders for a total of 160 million doses for May, June and July, which will be used for the 45-plus age group. However, between March 16 and April 30, a total of 116 million people received their first shot. Even if we exclude a small fraction of those who received the Covaxin shot between March 15-31 (they may have already received their second shot in April, as the gap, in this case, is four weeks), nearly 110 million people were scheduled to return for their secondshot between May and July 2021. It is likely that a small proportion of the 110 million peoplewaiting for their second dose would go to the private sector. Even then, of the secured Uniongovernment vaccine supply of 160 million for May to July, only 50-million-odd shots would beavailable for 45 years and older coming for their first shot. Can India be assured of increase in vaccine supply by July 2021? It is unlikely to be to the extent of 150 million doses a month as is being suggested. A large manufacturer in India planned to have a monthly production capacity of 100 million doses by January, a timeline which has now been shifted to July. After all, vaccine manufacturing and scaling up are complex processes and an ambitious timeline does not always work. The situation of other manufacturers is likely to be similar. The contribution of vaccine imports will be marginal to the overall supply for India. In the wake of supply constraints and challenges, the role of vaccination policy and delivery strategy becomes vital to avoid chaos at the vaccination centres. All policy options anddelivery strategies should be reexamined and simplified. The increase in the gap between the two doses of Covishield, announced last week, and which was being suggested by many for - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara months, is one such.

India has not given any manufacturer of a COVID-19 vaccine indemnity against the costs of compensation for any severe side effects, which is a condition Pfizer has obtained in many countries where its shots have already been widely used, including Britain and the United States. more Covid waves will hit the city by then and how many more lives will be lost,” the Delhi Chief Minister insisted at a televised briefing.Giving the four suggestions to the central government, Arvind Kejriwal said: “All vaccine makers in India, within 24 hours.
