The Bombay High Court today directed the state Anti-Corruption Bureau and Enforcement Directorate to continue its inquiry against former minister Chhagan Bhujbal and his family members for alleged money laundering and land grabbing. The direction was passed by a division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice A K Menon despite the two investigating agencies informing the court that they have closed inquiries against Bhujbal into five allegations out of total nine, due to lack of evidence.

Cong lacks real strategy to washout Members of Congress and Left carried placards and raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the government for not acting against Swaraj and Raje in Lalit Modi row Agency | New Delhi

For the second day, Parliament was unable to function as the opposition, rejecting the government’s offer of a debate, forced repeated adjournments Wednesday, demanding the removal first of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj,

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan over the controversies surrounding them. Rajya Sabha failed to transact any business for the second straight day due to the pandemonium. Meeting on its first working day this session,

Lok Sabha too remained paralysed as Congress and Left members kept entering the well of the House with placards despite Speaker Sumitra Mahajan’s warning of disciplinary action. Both Houses adjourned for the day after 2 pm. The only work done in Lok Sabha was the green signal to a

motion seeking extension of the term of the Joint Committee of Parliament on the land bill. Black bands on their arms, Congress members raised placards that read ‘Bade Modi meherban to chhote Modi pehelwan’ (a reference to the Prime Minister and former IPL chief Lalit Modi), ‘PM chuppi

todo’ (PM, break your silence), ‘Modiji 56 inch dikhao, Sushma, Raje ko turant hatao’ (Show your might by removing Swaraj and Raje). RJD and NCP members backed the Congress protest, watched by Swaraj who was sitting in the front row of the treasury benches with Home Minister Rajnath Singh and

Transport Minister Nitin by raising the demand for Gadkari. TRS members a separate high court for contributed to the uproar Telangana.

Shradhanjali: Jharkhand minister thinks Blast in Afghanistan targets APJ Kalam is dead, gives him floral tribute crowded market, leaves 19 dead Agency | New Delhi

In a weird event, Jharkhand Education Minister Neera Yadav was found paying homage to former president APJ Abdul Kalam’s photo in Kodarma. According to Hindu tradition, the floral tribute and applying kumkum on the photo is something which is predominantly done to pay respect to a person after his death. And it is considered inauspicious to do it while someone is alive. This bizarre incident raised questions over the lack of cultural knowledge of the Education Minister. Even more bizarrely, the incident took place in a

Speaker warns of action against protesting members Agency | New Delhi

No business could be conducted in Parliament pre-lunch on Wednesday as a combative Opposition sought to force a discussion on corruption in the wake of the Lalit Modi case and the Vyapam scam. In the Lok Sabha, several Opposition MPs sported black bands in protest and also held up placards. When they continued to hold them up despite directions from the Chair not to do so, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan warned the Congress and TRS MPs of disciplinary action. In the Rajya Sabha, Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien chided the BJP MPs for disrupting proceedings and asked why the

Treasury Benches were behaving like the Opposition. As in the Lok Sabha where the TRS was demanding the establishment of a seperate High Court in Telangana in the din over corruption, the Rajya Sabha also saw members of various parties raise a slew of issues. 4:45 pm: Lalit Modi Row: The Government rejected

Asuicide bombing Wednesday at a crowded market in northern Afghanistan killed 19 people and left at least 28 others injured, officials said. The blast in Faryab province was caused by explosives attached to a motorcycle, said Mohammad Saleh Saleh, governor of the local Almar district. The dead included 10 members of the country’s security forces, he said. Many people were out in public Wednesday in the aftermath of the Eid al-Fitr hol-

iday that marked the end of the monthlong Islamic fasting time of Ramadan. No group took immediate responsibility for the attack, which was under investigation amid speculation that the security forces at the market were targeted.

The bombing came days after Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum, Afghanistan’s first vice president, visited the province to mark Eid al-Fitr and vowed that the government would stand by the increasingly volatile area.

gress replaced Bhauguna with Harish Rawat in view of the Uttarakhand floods, among the first thing the new CM did was to change the liquor policy of the state. “Harish Rawat’s priority was to change the policy in such a way that the liquor distribution would happen through agencies which they will bring in and only transportation would happen through GMVN,” he said. The minister added that the distribution was

removed from government agency GMVN... the public body was sidelined and private agencies at the convenience and through the pick and chose policy of the Chief Minister and his PS Mohammed Shahid and passed on to private agencies. “There was an understanding of several hundred of crores (of rupees)...let us bargain how much you will give me, the PS sits and negotiates with these people saying how much

are you giving now and the payment would be made in Delhi or Dehradun. 25% now, 75% later all this comes through in that sting operation,” she said. “Very clearly, with a clear intention of making money in a state like Uttarakhand which is crying for help, the chief minister and his handpicked and chosen PS, an IAS officer from Gujarat cadre who was brought in even when he was a union minister,” he added.

BJP alleges ‘liquor scam’ in Uttarakhand, releases sting operation video

Agency | New Delhi With no end in sight to the ongoing tussle in Parliament, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) opened a new front against the Congress by releasing a video of a purported sting operation against Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat’s personal secretary Mohammed Shahid, in which he is seen as negotiating with middlemen to change the excise policy in the state. Releasing the video at the party headquarters, Union Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, “The excise policy of Uttarakhand under Vijay Bhauguna was to have the wholesale distribution of foreign liquor (FL-2) through Garwhal Mandal Vikas Nigam and Agriculture Marketing Council. These two then distribute to the smaller retailers and the third layer was the retail outlet.” Sitharaman said that after the Con-

Fracas between Kejriwal government and Delhi police

For some time now, and in full public view, Delhi’s government has trained its guns on Delhi Police, which reports to the Union home ministry. The latter has returned fire, with constables to the police commissioner taking pot shots at the government. The state government has embarked on an advertisement blitz, in print and on radio, that frames the police force in poor light. In an open letter to the prime minister, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has highlighted the gruesome murder of a teenage girl in the city to underline his complaint, while pushing his campaign for gaining control over the force that is denied to the elected government under the capital’s power-sharing arrangement. His disparaging remark about policemen had earlier caused some heartburn in the force. Kejriwal’s strategy of going public in a bid to distance his government from policing failures in Delhi intends to be smart politics, but actually reveals a lack of maturity. There is a systemic price to be paid if a chief minister ridicules officials, especially law enforcers, in public. Reprimands, when necessary, must be served behind closed doors and without disrespect to the institution. To be sure, Kejriwal’s frustration with the multiple centres of power in a state he rules is understandable. As the head of an elected government, he also has to address the complaints and concerns of citizens. Yet, the reality is that he has only partial control over the executive in Delhi and till the arrangement is altered through due process — which will involve negotiation with the Centre — he must function within its limits and constraints. The lack of a working relationship with the Centre can hurt the efficiency of his government and jeopardise the developmental agenda it so fervently promises and proclaims. As chief minister, moreover, Kejriwal is expected not just to publicise and highlight the problems but also to come up with the solutions. And while his government’s efforts to identify and isolate corrupt elements are commendable, he also needs to recognise and make the distinction between the institution and its rogue members. If he is not careful, his headlong rush into confrontation with institutions and with the Centre could take the sheen off his government’s more radical initiatives, like subsidised canteens and health centres. The Delhi fracas has raised another question: Should police officials publicly lock horns with the head of the elected government? The Union home minister must caution Delhi Police personnel against commenting on the state government’s conduct in public. A spat between the government and the law enforcement machinery can only benefit law-breakers.

Good governance not about selfies, says Neha Dhupia Agency | New Delhi

There’s one sure-shot way to make sure you get attention on social media these days, criticise the BJP government or Narendra Modi. That often ensures preferential treatment by thousands of anonymous trolls whose raison d’etre seems to be to abuse people on the internet. On a day when rains brought the city of Mumbai to a standstill, Neha Dhupia tweeted: “One rain n the city comes to a standstill. Good governance is not about selfies n makin us do yoga,it’s making sure ur citizens r safe,” This was all the sign

that Twitter users, largely anonymous, a group that pop-culture expert Chetan Bhagat christened bhakts or FACIM (Frustrated And Complex-ridden Indian Males), attacked her for being a woman, for supporting AAP, for campaigning for a Congress candidate and for doing films. To be fair, her view wasn’t that different from how we felt while commuting to work today, wondering how a little rain could bring the entire city to a standstill. Only a month ago, Shruti Seth and Kavita Krishnan were trolled, for questioning the Prime Minister’s #Self-

ieWithDaughter campaign where men after lovingly clicking pictures with their daughters proceeded to abuse both of them with the vilest words. Actress Shruti Seth had tweeted “A selfie is not a device to bring about change Mr. PM. Try reform.” And added the hashtag #selfieobsessedPM for good measure. Activist Kavita Krishnan was more critical as she had called Modi a #LameDuckPM and saying “He has a record of stalking daughters.” Even the nation’s go-to bapuji showed his ‘unsanskari’ side when he tweeted: “Jail the bitch.”

Anushka Sharma opens up about her relationship with Virat Kohli, calls him her ‘arm candy’ Agency | New Delhi

I remember during the interactions for PK, when Anushka Sharma was quizzed about her relationship with Virat Kohli, she had clearly refused to talk about it. Not because she didn’t want to talk about it but she knew what would follow. “I don’t want this to grab headlines, honestly. I know it will if I talk about it. It’s for everyone to say. I’m not accepting it nor am I denying it. It’s evident from what I am doing. But I don’t want a 24X7 press conference running in my life,” she had shot back. That was December, last year. She’s been a part of three more films in between- NH10, Bombay Velvet and Dil Dhadakne Do- and has changed in a lot more ways. She’s become more open about her boyfriend

Virat Kohli and is more accepting about her relationship. Yet, she doesn’t like people intruding into her personal space. “I am not here to tell anyone how many times we talk to each other in a day, when we meet, where we meet, nothing.” At the vogue Beauty Awards on

Tuesday night, Anushka walked in with Virat in tow. While at the Wimbledon, the two were sporting matching colours, at the awards function, the situation was a little different. Virat chose his staple black and white while Anushka beamed in a lime gown.

A state government spokesman said on July 16 that Parineeti was chosen for the campaign as she hailed from the state’s Ambala town. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the nationwide campaign from Panipat town in January to promote the cause of the girl child. Gold slides towards 5-year India’s tour of Sri Lanka: Focus on third low as investors pull back spinner as selectors set to pick Test squad

Ahmedabad

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Agency | New Delhi

Agency | London Gold fell back towards five-year lows on Wednesday as investors continued to pull away from the precious metal, with a slide through key chart levels earlier this week setting prices up for further losses. A looming rise in U.S. interest rates, the first in nearly a decade, has dented gold’s investment appeal, encouraging more sellers in the market after Monday’s 3 percent rout, its biggest one-day drop since September 2013. Holdings in top goldbacked exchange-traded fund (ETF) SPDR Gold Trust fell for a fourth

day on Tuesday, declining another 4.8 tonnes to hit their lowest since 2008. Its reserves have nearly halved from their 2012 peak. Spot gold was down 0.5 percent at $1,095.69 an ounce at 0940 GMT, while U.S. gold futures for August delivery were down $8.70 an ounce at $1,094.80. On Monday, gold slid to its lowest since March 2009 at $1,088.05 an ounce. It failed to benefit from a softer tone to the dollar and stock markets on Wednesday, which usually would be expected to give some respite to the metal.

Govt approves extension of interest subvention scheme on crop loans

Agency | New Delhi With uncertainty looming over the impact of poor rain on kharif crops, the Union cabinet on Tuesday decided to extend the subsidy offered on interest rates to farmers for 201516 and increase the budget allocation for the socalled interest subvention scheme. In doing so, the finance ministry seems to have dropped its plan to revamp the scheme for crop loans at least for now. Finance minister Arun Jaitley had allocated Rs.13,000 crore in the

budget for this scheme in the current fiscal, higher than Rs.9,476.71 crore set aside in last year’s budget (as per revised estimates for 2015-16). On Tuesday, the cabinet decided to increase the allocation for this year to Rs.18,110 crore. Of this, Rs.15,778 crore will be used to subsidize loans given by state-run banks. The remaining amount will be used by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) to refinance loans given by regional rural banks and cooperative banks.

today. That’s a total of 45,000 smartphones sold in five seconds. In their last flash sale for the device, the company had received around 50 lakh registrations, may of whom were left disappointed. Registrations will open once again at 6pm today for the net flash sale on Flipkart.

The third specialist spinner’s slot will be the subject of much deliberation when the national selection committee, headed by Sandeep Patil, meets on Wednesday to announce the squad for the threeTest away series against Sri Lanka starting August 12. Barring this one aspect, the five wise men on the selection panel would have very little to fret on while picking the squad for the longer format where at least 13 players will automatically select themselves. Apart from third spinner’s position, it will also be interesting to find out whether it will be a 15 or 16-member squad for the three-match series. The six specialist batsmen who are automatic choices are openers Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan,

skipper Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma and A team captain Cheteshwar Pujara. Young KL Rahul, who missed out against Bangladesh due to dengue, is likely to come back as the seventh batsman. Wriddhiman Saha is another automatic selection as first-choice wicket-keeper while an additional 16th member might make provision for Naman Ojha or Sanju Samson as the second wicketkeeper. The three

pacers, who are likely to make the cut are Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Pacer Varun Aaron is also a certainty if he recovers from his bout of influenza. While the two off-spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh are sure to retain their places, it remains to be seen whether the selection committee opts for a leftarm spinner in Axar Patel or a veteran leg-spinner in Amit Mishra.

Usain Bolt Sacrifices Junk Food To Prolong Career

Former India batsman VVS Laxman on Wednesday termed the suspension of two Indian Premier League (IPL) teams Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) as unfortunate, but added nothing is bigger than cricket and the game will ultimately emerge victorious despite the controversy. “Suspension of both the IPL teams is very unfortunate. There are lot of positives as far as IPL is concerned. No one is bigger than the game. And I think the focus is and will always be on cricket and cricket will be the ultimate winner,” Laxman said in an interview here. The Supreme Court appointed Justice Lodha Committee suspended the two IPL franchises on July 14 and banned their two team officials, Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra, respectively, for life from cricketing activities. After the suspension, the Board of Control of for Cricket in India

But the amount of good cricket that we have seen in the last IPL, competitive cricket was seen being played.” The 40-year-old also said it is too early to say it is a setback for the young players who are part of the two franchises.

U Mumba Pick Up Fourth Straight Win: Pro Kabaddi

For last years runners-up U Mumbai, who defeated defending champions Jaipur Pink Panthers, Bengaluru Bulls and Patna Pirates in their previous three games here, Bapu scored eight raid points while Devadiga got seven, including two when just five minutes were left. In fact, this phase of the game in the second half, when the two teams were tied at 18-all with nine minutes left after U Mumba had taken a 10-9 lead at half time, was the turning point as the hosts garnered four raid points to their opponents’ nil.

Agency | New Delhi Legendary hockey Olympian Balbir Singh Sr is extremely disappointed in the manner Hockey India has handled the Paul van Ass issue making it clear that this frequent hire-and-fire policy would affect the national team’s performance with only one year left for Rio Olympics. “If we change coaches this frequently, then something apparently is wrong with our system. Rajkot royal family dragged to court for loan default Correspondent | Rajkot

Weeks after he was declared defaulter by HDFC bank, scion of Rajkot royal family, Mandhatasinh Jadeja has been dragged to the court by Gruh Finance Limited over recovery of loan dues. Gruh Finance filed a case against Jadeja in a Rajkot court on Tuesday after two bank cheques that the royal had given to the financing firm bounced last month. Senior officials of Gruh Finance said that Jadeja had availed of Rs 2.5 crore loan by mortgaging a Rs 22 crore worth flat in Malabar Hill in Mumbai in year 2008. He further availed Rs 5 crore loan by submitting the same Malabar Hill flat as security in 2012. Officials of Gruh Finance further

said that till year 2013, Jadeja, who is also a director of Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited, had been paying his EMIs (equated monthly installments) each worth Rs 12 lakh regularly. But he started defaulting since then and did not pay a single EMI in financial year 2014-15. “There-

fore, we served him a legal notice in March this year. In reply, he sent us three cheques collectively worth Rs 1.25 crore. Two of them were worth Rs 30 lakh each while the third cheque was worth Rs 65 lakh. We deposited the first cheque on June 15 and it was cleared. However, the

Gruh Finance, which is subsidiary of HDFC bank, has filed the case in Rajkot district court under Section 138 of Negotiable Instruments Act for dishonouring cheque. The court case against Jadeja comes weeks after he was declared defaulter by HDFC bank last month after failing to repay Rs 4.46 crore loan which he had availed from an HDFC branch in Ahmedabad.

State government’s plan to develop prime land adjoining the Gujarat University(GU), between LD College of Engineering and 132feet Ring Road, faces strong opposition from some of the university employees, syndicate members and others. Those opposing the plan question the right of the GU authorities to hand over the land to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation(AMC), which is reported to have held a meeting with GU authorities for a town planning (TP) scheme. Himanshu Patel, a powerful GU senate member, has asked GU vice chancellor M N Patel to produce evidence that the land belongs to the university.“VC can’t

transfer the land to the state government if it is not the owner of the land”, points out Himanshu Patel. Let GU prove its ownership first before anything else”, says the senate member, who is also a state Congress spokesperson. Patel and several employees of GU suspect the move to grab the university’s land and hand it over to

real estate developers or to some private groups running educational institutions. “The whole idea is to make a quick buck by transferring the prime land to business groups”, remarks former GPCC president Arjun Modhwadia. A senior BJP leader, on conditions of anonymity, said that since the area is an educational hub with

LDCE, Government Women’s Polytechnic, Physical Research Laboratory, ATIRA(Ahmedabad Textile Industry’s Research Association) and Amrut Modi School of Management located in the area, efforts were being made by some private educational group close to the ruling party to acquire the university’s land by bringing a TP scheme. The politician said that if the university wanted to develop the area, it could do it from its own funds as the university’s annual income from different sources was more than Rs. 25 crores. And it would not take more than Rs. five crores for resurfacing the road and installing streetlights on the road from LDCE to 132 feet Ring Road.

Dad-in-denial fined for serial paternity dodge

Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

The Gujarat high court has fined Hasmukh Pandya, 42, a teacher from Limkheda — in the tribal district of Dahod — for refusing to accept that he is the father of his three children. Pandya invited the court’s ire because of his dogged denial of fatherhood despite the DNA test conducted by the Directorate of Forensic Sciences (DFS), Gandhinagar, establishing his paternity. Justice Paresh Upadhyay said, “The husband has not only abused the process of law, but

has abused his wife. He is falsified by the clinching evidence like the FSL report. Dismissing the petition without imposing cost would be too lenient a view against him...” Pandya has paid Rs 2,500 to his wife as directed by the HC for abusing her and unnecessarily making her and their three children — two sons and a daughter — take the test. Pandya married in 1994; the couple had their first child in 1995; the second in 1996; and the third in 1999. In 2011, Pandya filed for divorce in a Dahod court, accus-

ing his wife of having an extramarital relationship. He also asserted that he was not the biological father of the three children. He demanded the DNA test to prove his claims. However, the court turned down his plea. The adamant Pandya then filed an appeal in a district court, which ordered his wife and the three children in February 2012 to take the paternity test at the DFS. In September 2013, the FSL report demonstrated that Pandya’s claims were false and that he was indeed the father of the kids.
