IAF plane with 29 aboard disappears over Bay of Bengal, search ops on

Hours on, IAF plane still missing The IAF aircraft was last spotted on the radar by Air Traffic Control officials at 8.12 am. It was carrying 23 personnel on board, including six crew members (H.S.) | New Delhi

An Indian air force plane carrying 29 personnel went missing over the Bay of Bengal on its way from Chennai to the Andaman Nicobar Islands on Friday, triggering an expansive search involving helicopters, warships and a submarine. The Russian-origin Antonov-32 plane disappeared about 280 km off the coast of Chennai from where it had taken off at 8.30 am. It was due to arrive around midday at Port Blair -- about 1400km away -- which hosts India’s only tri-service command. The plane was flying 12 air force personnel, one each from the army, navy and coast guard and eight civilians, some of them family members of soldiers. It also had a crew of six. The medium-lift plane, upgraded last year, can fly for four hours and 15 minutes without refuelling. “The aircraft was observed to have carried out a left turn with rapid loss of height from 23,000 feet,” an Indian Air Force (IAF) official told Hindustan Times. IAF officials said the missing plane made its last radio contact at 8.46 am and it was last seen on the radar at 9.12 am. At least four planes, including two P-8I longrange maritime surveillance aircraft, helicopters and 13 warships are

1984. There are 101 such planes in the air force’s inventory. The one that has gone missing was overhauled and upgraded at the IAF’s 1 Base Repair Depot in Kanpur in September. It had flown 279 hours after being upgraded, IAF officials said. The mid-life upgrade and life extension of the AN-32

Rahul Gandhi met the victims. Seven persons of Dalit community were brutally thrashed by cow vigilantes for skinning a dead cow on 11 July, triggering nationwide condemnation. The AAP chief also alleged that the Gujarat government first allows crimes be carried out on Dalits and then slaps false cases on people who come out in protest on streets. He alleged that the dalit victims were beaten up at the behest of the administration.

its outdated military aircraft threatens national security, with some of the fleet virtually on their last legs. Retired Air Marshal Anil Chopra said searching for an aircraft in an ocean was complex and that knowledge of the last known position of the plane would be critical for any breakthrough.

“Unfortunately the radar cover in Indian east coast does not cover full area... As time elapses uncertainty and risk increases,” he posted on Twitter. “Searching an aircraft in an ocean is as complex as finding a ping pong ball on Siachen glacier,” he tweeted, referring to the Himalayan glacier.

1st Test: Kohli’s maiden doubleton takes India to 404/4 at lunch

Starting the day at 143 not out, not many would have bet against Virat Kohli getting a double hundred in the first session and it only took 281 deliveries for the Indian skipper to achieve the milestone and help India to 404 for the loss of four wickets at lunch on Day 2. Kohli was in supreme touch on day one and unlike his teammates, did not lose his concentration and day two was just an extension of what he did the previous day. Kohli had the company of Ravichandran Ashwin (22*), who came in to bat at number six - the highest position he has batted thus far in his career. And the duo went in to the break with an unbroken partnership worth 168 runs for the fifth wicket.

Adarsh Society case: SC stays demolition, asks Defence Ministry to ‘secure’ building The Adarsh Housing

In a latest development in Adarsh housing scam, the Supreme Court on Friday put a stay on the demolition of the society building. The apex court said, “No demolition of Adarsh Society building for now” and asked the Defence Ministry to “secure” the building until all appeals are finally decided. The Adarsh Housing Soci-

fleet began in 2010 and 40 planes have been upgraded in Ukraine over the last five years. Ten planes have been upgraded at the Kanpur facility. The Indian air force has gradually been getting rid of its older planes, some of which date back to the 1960s. Experts have warned India’s delay in revamping

ety had moved Supreme Court against the Bombay High Court verdict directing demolition. Responding to the SC directive, Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar said, “We will secure the building and there will be no demolition.” The next date of hearing is August 5, the handing

over of possession has to be done on or before that date. The process will be supervised by Registrar General of Bombay HC or by his nominee Registrar. The Adarsh scam first surfaced in 2003 when it was reported that a high-rise building was coming up in Mumbai’s Colaba area,

close to military installations, overriding objections. The society promoting the venture had a large number of senior military officers, politicians and bureaucrats as its members though it was meant to be for war heroes and next of kin of those killed in the Kargil war. Subsequent probes revealed the involvement of then chief minister of Maharashtra, Ashok Chavan, who had to resign when it was found that he accorded approval to the project as revenue minister and his relatives had flats in the society building.

Kohli brought up his maiden double-ton, the first Indian captain to achieve the feat overseas in the last over of the session whipping Roston Chase delivery to the midwicket. The celebration mirrored the mature player he had become as he got on to his knees and kissing the hallowed turf of the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. The duo of Kohli and Ashwin had no problem in the first session as the likes of Shannon Gabriel and Jason Holder failed to pose any kind of threat. Gabriel banged in a few short deliveries, but with not much bounce in the pitch, Ashwin pulled and hooked with ease. He drove marvelously well, often astonishing Kohli at the non-striker’s end. Kohli was sublime with his drives and flicks, while watching Ashwin’s ease in the middle on a placid wicket, Cheteshwar Pujara and

Ajinkya Rahane - both of whom got out to long hops on Day 1- would have been kicking themselves on missing out on a golden opportunity.

BJP’s UP caste plan challenged: Brahmins to Dalits

The BJP’s ambitious plan of marshalling the support of Dalits, upper castes and backwards in Uttar Pradesh in the run up to the Assembly elections appears to be in tatters. The party has been forced on to the back foot following the outrageous remarks by one of its leaders - now expelled from the party - against Bahujan Samaj Party’s chief Mayawati, the most dominant leader from the Scheduled Caste community in country’s most populous state. Union ministers have tried to reach out to Mayawati, with condemnation of the comment against her and disciplinary action against BJP vice president Dayashankar Singh. But Mayawati hasn’t bought the BJP’s platitudes and has been quick to make capital at the expense of the saffron party to get back in the reckoning in UP. Dalits account for a little over 22% of UP’s population and have traditionally voted for Mayawati, before the BJP breached that bastion in 2014 under Narendra Modi. The BJP has maximum number of SC MPs from UP - 18 to be precise. The BJP has since then tried to appropriate the legacy of Dalit icon BR Ambedkar and tried to reach out to the weaker section through economic welfare measure. But Mayawati is trying to scuttle the BJP’s march through identity politics. She took the lead in the Rajya Sabha to target BJP government in Gujarat over flogging of Dalit men on suspicion of cow slaughter. And the massive street protest in Lucknow following Dayashankar’a remarks against her was another clear signal that she is trying hard to make up lost ground. The BSP, though, is not the BJP’s only problem. The Congress’ move to appoint former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit as its CM face in UP has upset BJP’s game plan. The BJP doesn’t expect the upper caste, particularly Brahmins, to vote for the Congress because it has a CM face from the community. But its leaders concede that this will put more pressure on the BJP to woo Brahmins more overtly than it has been doing so far. But there is a risk that wooing Brahmins will have a negative bearing on the party’s plan for Dalits and OBCs. “If we give more tickets to Brahmins, it will be at the cost of some other community,” a BJP office bearer said. For now, the BJP is the only party without a chief ministerial candidate. The party leadership has been deliberating on this issue but hasn’t reached a conclusion. The BJP fears that projecting a Brahmin as chief minister might alienate the backward communities, particularly when the party has to contend with chief minister Akhilesh Yadav who comes from an OBC background. The OBCs are the single largest social group in UP and the BJP has tried to leverage the demographic equation by appointing Keshav Prasad Maurya, a backward caste leader, as its state chief. Ironically, what is restraining the BJP from announcing an OBC candidate as chief minister is the fear that the upper castes, particularly Brahmins, may go with the BSP, which is trying to recover from desertion by a few senior leaders by mobilising its cadre over the insult to Mayawati. Muslims, Yadavs and Jatavs - who are largely known for voting non-BJP parties - account for nearly 40% of UP’s population which leaves the BJP with a target vote base of just 60% that could back it.

Kabali Movie Review Agency | Chennai

There is this particular sequence in Pa Ranjith’s Kabali, where Rajinikanth playing his age, returns to India in search of his long-lost wife, along with his daughter Dhansika. What would the sixtyyear-old man, who had spent the past couple of decades mourning the loss of his sweet-heart, be going through? What would be the kind of emotions running in his mind? Doubt? Guilt? Anxiety? Excitement? What follows is not something we see in our cinemas. We are pulled into this poignant, mature romance by Ranjith with the confidence and mettle of a seasoned film-maker, and made to cheer for the soon-to-be-united ageing couple. But beyond all compelling character motives, it’s just one man who steals the show right under the film-maker’s nose and makes it almost impossible for us to look at anyone else in the frame. You must watch him strut outside to the gardens, and slump on the floor, struggling to control his mixed emo-

tions of feverish joy to understand what I am talking about. But it’s not over yet. Throughout this heart-warming episode which ends with the passionate Maya Nadhi, the man effortlessly owns the screen with his nuanced emotions of agonised anticipation so much so that we can’t help but feel thankful for Kabali, which has brought alive another dimension of the Superstar after quite a long, long time.

Madaari, that hit theatres on Friday, is the story of a common man Nirmal Kumar (Irrfan) who loses his son in a tragedy caused by corruption, and decides to seek justice by kidnapping the son of the country’s home minister (Tushar Dalvi). Jimmy plays the cele-

brated cop who heads the search operation. The film starts well with the scene being set up for a massive hunt for the kidnapped son. Irrfan’s preparations, especially the technical set-up to ensure he isn’t tracked down, is reminiscent of Neeraj Pandey’s national award-winning film A Wednesday (2008). In fact, there are similarities throughout the film to A Wednesday, but that not the problem. The pace at which writer Ritesh Shah tells the story is more troublesome; its too slow.

Nahi.” Though it can be understood and appreciated well in Hindi due to its flamboyant and rhythmical touch, it is loosely translated as “Don’t think too much about me. I come straight into the heart. But I cannot be understood.” In metaphorical sense, this line sums up the phenomenon a Salman Khan film has become in the past decade and a half. His films seem to have become critics-proof and the acceptance of his films has been singular and remarkable. Even his recent film Sultan has received massive opening at the box office and it recorded collections of over Rs300 crore in just twelve days of its release in India itself. This will be his third blockbuster offering after Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo in over a year. To make the most of this hysteria, it is reported that a leading channel has signed a deal with the actor for satellite rights of his upcoming films. It is reported that the deal value is whopping Rs 1000 crore.

Agency | New Delhi A few days back, news broke that Aamir Khan will be rapping for a promotional song for his upcoming wrestler-based sports drama Dangal. Well now, fresh photos from the shoot of this promotional song video has arrived and Mr Perfectionist looks a pakka hiphop star in these series of photographs. A source close to the film’s production told a leading daily, “Aamir is excited about doing a rap number. It is a peppy track that will be used in promotions. After recording it, he will shoot

for the video.” Aamir has previously lent his voice in the 1998 film Ghulam, for which he sang Ae Kya Bolti Tu. He later went on to recite shayari in films like Sarfarosh and Fanna. The last film he sang for was 2007’s Taare Zameen Par. Now, after a gap of nine years, the PK actor has once again returned behind the mic. “But in this one, Aamir’s is the only voice. Pritam has composed the song while Amitabh Bhattacharya is behind the lyrics. When the makers broached the idea, Aamir was excited and gave it a thumbs-up.

However, he wanted to rehearse before stepping into the recording studio,” added the source. The actor has reportedly been involved in multiple practice sessions to get the song right. “Pritam and Amitabh are part of his practice sessions. Mr Perfectionist wants the track to be nothing short of perfect and is enjoying trying his hand at rapping,” said the source. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Dangal is based on the life of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat. The film is set to release on December 23, 2017.

Agency | New York People living with chronic low back pain are more likely to use illicit drugs -- including marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine -- compared to those without back pain, says a study. In addition, chronic low back pain patients with a history of illicit drug use are more likely to have a current prescription for pain-relieving drugs, said one of the researchers Anna Shmagel from University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, US. The researchers analysed survey responses from more than 5,000 US adults (aged 20 to 69) from a nationally representative health study. The results, published in the journal Spine, suggested that back pain was linked to higher rates of illicit drug use. About 49 per cent of adults with chronic low back pain said they had ever used illicit drugs, compared to 43 per cent of those without the condition. Rates of current illicit drug use (within the past 30 days) were also higher in the chronic low back pain group -- 14 per cent versus nine percent.

The Gujarat high court on Thursday convicted 11 people for burning a man and his daughter to death during the 2002 anti-Muslim riots in Mehsana district’s Meda-Adraj village. A trial court had in 2005 acquitted all 27 people accused of burning Kalumiya Saiyad and his daughter, Hasinabibi, to death. The HC reversed the acquittal of 11 of them and held them guilty of murder, arson, and unlawful assembly.

The two had taken shelter in the house of a Hindu neighbour. The mob barged into the house by breaking its door. It thrashed the neighbour for protecting Muslims before setting the two on fire on March 3, 2002. The accused brought them out and again set them on fire when the two jumped into a water pool. Special prosecutor J M Panchal said the high court would pronounce the sentences for the convicts on August 4.

Gujarat reported a fivefold jump in crimes against Dalits in 2015 over the previous year, data released by the national commission for scheduled castes shows, giving credence to charges that the community was vulnerable in the PM’s home state. The report comes at a time when Gujarat has erupted in protests against the stripping and flogging of four Dalit youth by a cow vigilante group in Una district for allegedly skinning a dead animal. The state reported 6,655 cases of atrocities against scheduled castes, figures circulated for a review meeting

At a time when cotton acreage has taken a beating owing to the monsoon’s delay in reaching Gujarat, the appearance of the pink bollworm in the early-sown plants has compounded woes and made farmers across the State jittery.`With the pest attack coming back to haunt cotton growers in Saurashtra for the third consecutive year, many have decided to uproot the plant to make way for alternate crops such as pulses or castor. Cotton growers from the districts of Rajkot, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar have also faced sporadic pest attacks in their mature cotton plants, said farm sources. Those with irrigation facilities had taken up sowing of cotton early, in May, while the monsoon arrived late June. Gujarat is the second State where pest attacks on cotton sown this

kharif has been reported. Recently, the white flies that had ravaged the cotton crop in Punjab last year reappeared, triggering concerns among farmers in the Northern state. The Central government has rushed a team of scientists to study the whitefly attack in Punjab. “Farmers who had access to irrigation — either ground-water or other water sources — began sowing cotton in May itself, as it gave an additional crop cycle to the farmers,” said Ramesh Bhorania, a farmer based in Rajkot. A cotton grower in Jamnagar added: “We had used Bt seed of cotton, still it did not

save the boll from the pest attack. This plant is useless now. Therefore, we are uprooting it and will think of an alternate crop such as pulses or castor.” Experts attribute the early sowing of cotton as being responsible for the attack of pink bollworm, which survives and develops during the high temperatures of summer. A monophagous insect (single host pest), pink bollworm has emerged as a menace mainly in the Gujarat region, while Maharashtra’s Vidarbha and Telangana — the other two main cotton growing regions, have largely remained unaffected from the worm.

Vibrant Gujarat to connect India to the world on Thursday show. Uttar Pradesh tops the list of states with 8,946 cases. Gujarat, however, had the highest rate of atrocities against Dalits in 2015. It recorded 163 crimes for every 100,000 SC population, compared to 43 for Bihar. These figures will give fresh ammunition to the Opposition, which has in Parliament targeted the Centre for grow-

ing violence against Dalits and minorities. The main opposition part, the Congress, has accused the Modi government of unleashing “social terror” in the country. Another BJP-ruled state, Chhattisgarh, also shows a spurt in crimes against the scheduled castes. Around 3,000 cases of atrocities against Dalits were registered last year.
