Agency News: London British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he had called a G7 leaders’ meeting on Tuesday to discuss the crisis in Afghanistan and urged the international community to find ways to prevent it from escalating. Taliban militants seized control of Kabul last weekend in an upheaval that sent civilians and Afghan military allies fleeing for safety. Many fear a return to the austere interpretation of Islamic law imposed during the previous Taliban rule that ended 20 years ago. Western governments are discussing

how to handle the situation in Kabul where thousands of civilians desperate to flee Afghanistan have descended on the airport after the Taliban seized control of the country. “It is vital that the international community works together to ensure safe evacuations, prevent a humanitarian crisis and support the Afghan people to secure the gains of the last 20 years,” Johnson said on Twitter on Sunday.Britain currently holds the rotating leadership of the G7, which also includes theUnited States, Italy, France, Germany, Japan and Canada.

forces after the Taliban prevented a group of more than 70 Afghan Sikhs and Hindus from entering the area on Saturday.Another 281 Indians, most of them employees of firms from Western countries that were active in Afghanistan, were flown back from Doha to Delhi on two special flights. These Indians had been flown out to Qatar on US and

NATO flights over the past few days.People familiar with the developments said on condition of anonymity that there were no specific figures for the Indians who remained in Afghanistan, though the indications were that this would be a low number. Efforts are still on to register all Indians who are still in the wartorn country and evacuate them as quickly as possible along with Afghan nationals, including Sikhs and Hindus.

The people acknowledged that Afghan citizens granted Indian visas were facing problems in accessing Kabul airport. “The Taliban are specifically checking for people with Afghan passports and Indian visas and driving them back,” one of the people said.Another problem in evacuations is the journey from different parts of Kabul to the airport because the Taliban have set up check posts across the capital. Adding to the worries of the Indian side are reports that terrorists from Pakistan-based groups such as Lashkar-eTaiba and Haqqani Network are present among the Taliban.

Gujarat HC’s decision to stay provisions of state’s anti-conversation law is extremely welcome

The Gujarat High Court decision staying some provisions of the state’s anti-conversion law, including the one that deems all interfaith marriages as those solemnised for carrying out forceful religious conversion, is extremely welcome. While the decision by Chief Justice of the High Court Vikram Nath and Justice Biren Vaishnav is only an interim order, even as the larger legal challenge of the Gujarat Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act, 2021 is still pending, the ruling sends out a larger message. It poses a question mark on the constitutionality of not just the Gujarat law but also similar legislation in other states, be it Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, or Himachal Pradesh. The stated aim of recent anti-conversion laws brought in by BJP-ruled states is to prohibit unlawful religious conversions. But in doing so, the law’s vague and excessively broad provisions give powers to the state to hold a police inquiry to probe the motives behind a woman’s change of religion for marriage and to potentially annul such a marriage. The law also allows the “aggrieved person, his parents, brother, sister, or any other person related by blood, marriage or adoption” to lodge an FIR on an allegedly unlawful conversion, essentially legitimising mob interference in an individual’s private life. By shiftin the burden of proof on the individual accused of forcibly converting another person, in effect, the law weaponises communal prejudice and paranoia and throws the power of the state behind it. Even as these laws are under challenge before several high courts, they have become a template for harassment of citizens. The interim ruling comes, therefore, as muchneeded relief. The Gujarat HC intervention recognises the unacceptability of law’s intrusion into an individual’s private life even when the state may have a legitimate interest in containing unlawful, forcible conversions. It draws a line and says that the state cannot enter the doors of a marriage where there is no evidence of it being forced or involving violence. However, even with the progressive intervention of the judiciary, decisions are often excruciatingly slow to ercolate to the ground. Take the case of the police across the country continuing to file cases under Section 66A of the Information Technology Act despite the apex court striking it down in 2015. Laws that grant the state police powers toregulate freedoms must be rolled back. The Gujarat HC’s reading of the law will hopefully have a bearing on other courts - Kapilkumar M. Indian startups, investors press PM for direct overseas listing

Economic activity shows business resumption near pre-pandemic level The Nomura India Business Resumption Index is compiled with data from various trackers, such as Google, Apple driving index and electricity demand. Agency News: New Delhi After briefly plateauing, mobility picked up sharply, with Google workplace, retail and recreation and Apple driving index rising by 7.4 percentage points, 5.3 percentage points and 6.7 percentage points, respectively, the latest data showed Economic activity record expansion in the week ending August 8, according to the widely watched Nomura

Prominent Indian startups, investors and investment advisors have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow startups to directly list abroad. The signatorie to the letter include unicorns such as Byju’s, Swiggy, Cred, Bharat Pe, and Urban Ladder, and heads of many investment firms who have invested in Indian startups. The signatories called it the “single most significant big bang reform for the startup ecosystem” An overseas direct listing would raise the profile of these startups, make a greater capital pool available to them, and allow specialized investors to invest in these companies, especially in sectors such as softwareas-a-service, insurance technology, business to business logistics, genomics, and biotechnology, they said. If India wants to produce multinational tech giants, permitting our startups to access global capital by listing on international exchanges is an absolute must-have, says the letter dated July 29. The names include Tiger Global Management partner Scott

Shleifer, Falcon Edge cofounder and partner Navroz D. Udwadia, Norwest Venture Capital partner Niren Shah, Lightspeed India partner Bejul Somaia, Matrix Partners India managing director Vikram Vaidyanathan, Sequoia Capital India partner Rajan Anandan, Elevation Capital partner Ravi Adusumalli, and Nexus Venture partners Jishnu Bhattacharjee. Inability to list is a major impediment to growth ambitions and a reason why many of them move their base overseas, reads the letter. Mint has seen a copy of the letter, which also notes that overseas listing would encourage more foreign investors to back startups. Many tech startups are building products and services that compete globally, which is why an overseas listing would allow these firms to compete with larger firms listed in the US and Singapore, the letter argues. The letter, which has 22 signatories, also notes t at the government “showed intent to allow direct overseas listing” in September 2020 and allowed for some exemptions in February 2021 for firms listing overseas.

Vedantu is not up for sale, said co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Vamsi Krishna on a day that news website Entrackr reported the live tutoring startup was in talks with the edtech unicorn Byju’s for up to $800 million. Krishna said the company instead plans to announcea new fundraise this month. However, multiple persons told Mint on condition of anonymity that Byju’s did reach out to Vedantu last year and thatthe company plans to raise $100 million at a valuation of $1 billion. Edited excerpts from

an interview with Krishna: There are strongrumours about Vedantu being acquired by Byju’s. We would like your version. We haven’t been reached out by Byju’s thisyear for an acquisition. We didn’t start Vedantu to get acquired or to chase high valuations. There were several acquisition

offers lastyear that we haven’t considered seriously, or even taken to Vedantu’s board. Rumours of our acquisition come as a complete surprise,as we haven’t even had one direct conversation with anyone this year. We (Vedantu founders) have been in the educationindustry for 15 years. If exit outcomes were so important to us, we wouldn’t ave built Vedantu, or been in edtech. At present, Vedantu isgrowing threefold yearonyear, and we have no reasons to get acquired. So, talk of our acquisition is just a figment of someone’simagination. We continue to build Vedantu.

Tractor sales boost M&M’s Q1 result Agency News: New Delhi Mahindra and Mahindra India Ltd. (M&M), one of the country’s largest vehicle manufacturers, reported a year-on-year increase in net profit of Rs934 crore for the June quarter. This has come as a result of improvement in sales of tractors and passenger vehicles and the lowbase effect in the corresponding quarter when production and sales were impacted by the stringent nationwide lockdown imposedto contain the covid pandemic. The company had reported a net profit of just Rs39 crore in the yearago period. Sustained increase in prices of commodities such as steel and other precious metals continues to impact the company’s

operatingperformance and the management expects the shortage of semiconductors to continue to severely impactproduction operations. The vehicle maker’s performance dropped sharply on a sequential basis because of the explosiveincrease in Covid infections during the second wave. M&M had witnessed a sharp recovery in wholesale and retail sales of tractorsand passenger vehicles from March to July FY21 on the back of a gradual recovery in the

rural economy and increased preferencefor personal mobility. High demand and supply chain constraints resulted in a waiting period for some of the company’s offerings going beyond four months. Revenue from operations during the quarter increased by 110% to Rs11,763 crore compared to just Rs5,589 crore in theyearago period as wholesales of tractors skyrocketed to 85,858 units from 26,619 units. The dispatches of PVs also increased by 52% from 65,195 units to 99,127 units. Group chairman Anand Mahindra said the group will measure its social impact ‘as rigorously’ as it measures its financial performance. Anand Mahindra will take on the role f non-executive chairman of the firm in November.

When do you expect to close your new fundraise? We are in the midst of anew fundraise, at present. Since we still have to close it, we cannot disclose the quantum. However, we will announce it this month. Will these rumours impact your current fundraise? What are you hearing from investors? All our investors have been in the business for long and are used to these rumours. We are fortunate for their backing. Unfortunately, managing these rumours gets challenging, and we have received several calls from our vendors since morning.Byju’s ad Vedantu have common investors. How

does that affect Vedantu? The only common investor between us is TigerGlobal, and so far we haven’t faced any challenges. Tiger has opted to not take a board seat in Vedantu, which as a practicethey ave followed for certain other investments as well. We value Tiger on our cap table, since they have backed several successful businesses in India. With market dynamics choosing its leaders in edtech, has it been difficult to raise funds? Agreed, there is competition, but there is also a large market up for grabs. With consolidation at play, there will be two to three market leaders left.

India offers Cairn Energy $1bn refund Agency News: New Delhi India expects to refund $1 billion to UK-based Cairn Energy after it moved to scrap a retrospective tax law that unleashed bitterfights with prominent foreign investors, Financial Times reported. The lower house of parliament on Friday approved a draft law introduced theprevious day, cancelling a 2012 policy that enabled New Delhi to tax some foreign investments retrospectively. The upper house is expected to approve the law as early as next week. New Delhi would also drop $13.5 billion in outstanding claims against multinationals such as telecoms group Vodafone, pharmaceuticals company Sanofi and brewer SABMiller, now owned by AB InBev, as part of

efforts to repair its damaged reputationas an investment destination, the report said. Analysts say the legal initiative would allow New Delhi to resolve a bitter internationaltax battle with Cairn that has grown increasingly embarrassing for India. The UK energy group has sought in recent months to seize some ofthe government’s estimated $70bn worth of overseas assets. It’s a settlement offer masquerading as a law, said one foreign business analyst, who requested anonymity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government hopes the resolution of the dispute can bolster its reputation among foreign companies as it seeks new investment to revive India’s Covidbattered economy.

season. Malaika said: “We have a really amazing lineup of girls. When you do virtual auditions, you have girls coming from really small towns. Somehow it becomes difficult for girls to commute from where they are to participate. But, now because it being virtual it has made it a lot easier.” She elaborated, talking about the theme of the show: “I love theconcept this time, which is aUnapologetically You’. It is encouraging the girls to be themselves.” Sharing the different kinds of girls that have auditioned for the show, she said that “some would not say a word, some have never faced the camera, never put on make-up or have done their hair” “Some girls come from such small backgrounds that they arena¿t even allowed to leave their homes or have so many restrictions. To actually see them come out of their shells is really amaing. I was really happy and proud, as I really felt that they really pushed the boundaries.”The 47-year-old diva said that each contestant came in with a “really unique and endearing story”. “What we wanted this time waswhether you are tall, short, plump, skinny, single, married, transgender, or a cop. We just want women from all

walks of life. We have really embraced them all this time,” said Malaika. She said the show breaks stereotypes of women modeling. “We did not get stuck to stereotypes. We want all sorts of girls. Now whether they survive or they can make it to the next round that’s entirely on their hard work and merit.” Malaika believes that one can be a model but to add that “super” into a model is what differentiates from the others. “It’s very important for the girls tocome out of the comfort zone. We all are very happy to be in our comfort zones. The moment we push and say that we want to try something different. That is when you are able to put ‘super’ into the model. Not just be a cookie cutter model. Nobody is interested in that, one has to push the envelope,” she said. Malaika joined modeling at a very young age. She was selected as one of the video jockey’s in the late 1990s. She then entered the modeling world, appearing in many advertisements, album songs such as “Gur naal ishq mitha”. Education authorities fear, however, that because of high schools getting stretched, the dropout ratio in the district might rise.According to Dang district education inspector Vijay Deshmukh, “in 2019-20, 26.43 per cent students dropped out of school after Class 10 of which 24.96 per cent were girls and 27.91 per cent boys. Similarly in 2021-21, the drop out ratio was 17.55 per cent out of which 17.19 were

girls and 17.91 boys. This year, due to the shortage of classes figures may go up”.Deshmukh added that the DEO had sent proposal to the state education department to increase eight classes in eight government schools in Dangs. “We are waiting for the response from the government. Once we get approval, we will start activities and in coming days there would not be issue of admission to Class 11,” said Deshmukh. As per details received from the District Education Office (DEO) in Dang, this year, of the total of 3,909 students who have been promoted on account of the pandemic, 3,255 have got admissions. Last academic year, the district saw 67 per cent students pass and before that 65 per cent. Schools now have to not only accommodate their own students from Class 10 but also make room for new students, and in the process it is those who passed with low marks that have got left out.
