India Cools Off On Demand For Russian Crude Oil Agency News: New Delhi : Indian refiners are set to skip purchases of Russia ESPO crude oil this month due to higher freight rates, turning to Africa and the Middle East instead, industry sources said. India, which rarely used to buy Russian oil, has emerged as Moscow’s second biggest oil customer after China since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in late February.Refiners have been snapping up nearly all grades of Russian crude, taking advantage of discounts after some entities in the West halted purchases. However, higher prices are set to cool off demand, channeling supplies to China.“On net back basis after factoring in the freight, the landed cost of ESPO is turning out to be $5-$7 a barrel costlier in comparison to similar grades from other countries such as UAE’s Murban,” said an industry source.

Congress’s Gourav Vallabh SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Slams Shashi Tharoor, Supports Nefarious Moves By Centre In Jammu Ashok Gehlot As Party Chief And Kashmir Have Been Initiated Editorial

The Jammu and Kashmir administration is taking steps which seek to obliterate the historicallegacy and identity of the Kashmiri people while promoting measures which will heighten thecommunal divide between Jammu and the Valley. July 13 has been traditionally observed as Martyrs Day in Kashmir to commemorate thememory of 22 people who were killed in firing by the Maharaja’s police in 1931 whileprotesting against the feudal monarchy. For the second consecutive year there was no official commemoration of the event. In 2020,the union territory administration withdrew state patronage to Martyrs Day when usually awreath was laid at the graves of the martyrs by the head of the state government. It is alsono longer a government holiday. The gates of the martyrs’ graveyard were locked andbarricaded. This disavowal of a historical date which has resonance for the people ofKashmir is another attempt to disempower the people of the Valley.Following this, the administration has announced that the birthday of the former MaharajaHari Singh on September 23 would be observed as a public holiday. This followed a requestfrom various organisations in Jammu. The Maharaja symbolised autocratic feudal rule underBritish patronage of the system of princely states. The National Conference, with its leaderSheikh Abdullah had led the peoples’ movement against feudal rule and against Britishsuzerainty – a continuation of the struggle which saw the martyrdom of 22 people in 1931.While the Maharaja’s birthday has been declared a public holiday, Sheikh Abdullah’sbirthday observance has been discontinued since December 2019. The Maharaja’s role atthe time of independent was a dubious one. As per the Mount Batten Award, Princely Statescould choose which of the two independent states to join- India or Pakistan. The Maharaja, who had unleashed severe repression against the popular movement led by the NationalConference for an end to monarchy and for democratic rule, wanted Jammu and Kashmir toremain an independent state and not join either of the two new dominions. This is a factadmitted by the Maharaja in the letter to Mountbatten on October 26, 1947. He wrote theletter enclosing the instrument of accession to India after Pakistan sent armed ‘tribalinvaders’ to annex Kashmir. It is the resistance put up by the people led by the National Conference, while the Maharajafled from Srinagar to Jammu that helped the Indian Army, when it was dispatched, to driveout the invading forces. The Maharaja at the time when he was contemplating independence was fully backed by theRSS and later by the Praja Parishad which was run by RSS cadres. They had endorsed hisstance for independence and later after the accession, separation of Jammu from Kashmir. It is this Maharaja, an erstwhile ally of the British, who is being honoured with a state holidaywhile those who struggled against the monarchy and fought for democracy are being de-recognised. In honouring the Maharaja, the fact that he was a Hindu who ruled over amajority of Muslim subjects seems to be a crucial factor. The attitude of the BJP rulers to Hari Singh who sided with the British and wanted J&K to bean independent state is in stark contrast in its attitude to Nizam of Hyderabad. The BJPobserved ‘liberation day’ on September 17 in Telangana hailing the Army intervention whichousted the Nizam who also had refused to accede to India and toyed with idea of remainingindependent. The difference in approach is determined by the religion of the ruler. The firstwas a Hindu and the second a Muslim - both toadies of the British. The attitude of the RSS and the Hindu Mahasabha to the princely states at the time ofindependence is revealing. They were staunch supporters of the Hindu princes and rulers. They were opposed to the people’s movement in the princely states which fought againstautocracy and against British rule. They prioritised the interests of the feudal rulers over theinterests of the independent State of India. In fact, V D Savarkar sent a telegram of supportto the declaration - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara of independence by the Maharaja.

Agency News: Mumbai An incessant spell of light to moderate rain drenched Delhi for a second consecutive day today, leading to waterlogging in some areas and affecting traffic movement on key roads across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also issued an ‘orange alert’, cautioning people about sporadic heavy rain which could reduce visibility, disrupt traffic and damage kutcha roads and vulnerable structures. Federer reveals painful details leading to retirement call: ‘Scan result was…’ Agency News:Mumbai

A glorious career that began back in 1998, culminating into 103 career titles which includes 20 Grand Slams, is coming to an end on Friday as Roger Federer is all set to bid adieu to the sport. The 41-year-old, who had planned to make an ATP tour return this month and had a scheduled Basel appearance in October, has decided to hang his racquet and will make his last appearance in competitive tennis at the Laver Cup in London, most likely alongside Rafael Nadal in

a doubles match. However for Federer, it wasn’t an easy call as he revealed the painful details leading up to his retirement call on Thursday last week Tennis fans waited in baited breathe for the return of Federer for the first time since Wimbledon 2021. His continued struggle with knee injury had sidelined him for a long time, but he had scheduled his return to tour in the Laver Cup in London before travelling to Basel for the ATP 500 event. Striking it right: KL Rahul walks the talk Agency News:Mumbai KL Rahul got slightly uncomfortable, asked for clarity, put up a brave face and then talked at length about his strike rate issues. He revealed that he had taken the first step - acknowledging that his scoring rate is indeed a concern - and had started to work on it. A day later, when it mattered, he walked the talk. The irony is, it literally started with a little walk in the third over of the first T20I against Australia. After bowling a pretty decent first over with no boundaries, Josh Hazlewood, in

the first delivery of his second over, did what was expected of him - bowled a length ball just outside off-stump trying to search for swing. If Rahul had also done the expected, it would have resulted in a single at best. But he didn’t. He took a couple of quick steps toward the off-stump, negated whatever little chances of swing the ball might have had and trusted the true nature of the Mohali pitch and his wrists. Both didn’t let him down as Rahul shovelled the ball deep into the IS Bindra Stadium stands in the square-leg regionThe look on Hazlewood’s face.

‘Not disrespecting Karthik but...’: AUS Gold rates in India fall to 7-month lows after legend questions DK’s role in India’s XI Fed rate hike With every passing game, the situation surrounding Dinesh Karthik is only getting more tense and interesting, with an Australia legend questioning DK over his place in India’s Playing XI.

Agency News:New Delhi With every passing game, the situation surrounding Dinesh Karthik is only getting more tense and interesting. It is clear that the team management has shaped Karthik to be India’s finisher for the T20 World Cup

but on occasions, the way it has treated him with regards to his role in the role in the Playing XI has been rather baffling. For example, during the first T20I between India and Australia in Mohali, Karthik was held back and instead Axar Patel was made to bat ahead of him. And while

Axar could not get going, what it did was derail Karthik of any momentum as well as he perished after scoring six off five balls. The call to keep Karthik for the death overs and promote Axar ahead of him was met with plenty of flak, with former cricketers raising questions over the move. One of the many to have discarded the move is former Australia opener Matthew Hayden, who was quite taken aback and questioned Karthik’s role in the team.“I was just thinking about the role of Dinesh. This role Dinesh is playing now, for the life of me, I can’t work out why he wouldn’t be in their batting now. It doesn’t make any sense to me whatsoever. See. I don’t want to give the impression that I’m disrespecting Dinesh Karthik.

currency rupee breached the psychologically crucial 80 mark again to touch another fresh all-time of 80.44 against the US dollar against its previous day close of 79.97. This sharp depreciation was because of the current strength in the US dollar Index. The key policy rate in the US was raised by 75 basis points to 3.0-3.25 per cent -- which is the third consecutive hike of the same magnitude. The US central bank seeks to achieve maximum employment and inflation at the rate of 2 per cent over the long run and it anticipates that the ongoing hikes in the target range will be appropriate.Reacting to the rate hike move, stocks in the US fell nearly 2 per cent to close the day.

Rupee hits record low against US dollar, tipped to fall further, say analysts Agency News:New Delhi The Indian rupee is likely to fall further after hitting a record low to the dollar on Thursday as the U.S. Federal Reserve hinted at more aggressive rate hikes to tame inflation. The rupee opened at a record low of 80.2850 per U.S. dollar, down from 79.9750 in the previous session. The Fed raised rates by 75 basis points, in line with expectations. More importantly, it hinted that more hikes were coming and that rates would stay elevated until 2024. Asian currencies opened weaker, with the Chinese yuan slipping below 7.10 to the dollar.“After the hawkish Fed Reserve commentary, the rupee is (set to fall)”, said Anil Bhansali, head

of treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors.“The intervention from the central bank will remain crucial and they are expected to be present through the day. However, they may allow a closing for the pair above 80 today.”Samir Lodha, managing director at QuantArt Market Solutions, reckoned that more losses were in store for the rupee if the RBI decides to step back. ”Once RBI allows INR to trade beyond 80 on a consistent basis, I expect rupee to head towards 82.0 in a couple of months on account of the trade deficit and due to global recession and money supply tightening,” Lodha said. It is possible that “rupee will depreciate further with RBI intervention.
