Modi's invitation to attend India's Republic Day parade took Obama by surprise Washington : Prime Minister Narendra Modi's invitation to President Barack Obama to be the first American leader to be the chief guest at India's Republic day took him by "some surprise" but he felt "personally honoured" to accept. Given the "complicated history" between the two countries, "I think it took us by some surprise," Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters on Tuesday in a conference call previewing the visit. "There's a great affinity between the US and India and our people, but there's

also a history that is complicated and that would have made it seem highly unlikely that a US President would be sitting with India's leaders at their Republic Day ceremony," he said. "So I think President Obama was personally honoured to receive that invitation. I think he saw it as building on a successful summit with Prime Minster Modi," Rhodes said. "And I think he sees this as a potentially transitional if not transformational moment for the relationship because we have a very strong and clear indication from

India's leadership that they want to elevate our bilateral cooperation and our global cooperation." Rhodes noted that Obama has not attended any national day ceremonies of any other countries. "It's a unique event, but it's I think of great symbolic importance, given the USIndia history and given the importance of Republic Day in India," he said. "And so that's why he was more than pleased to accept the invitation." Although the White House had not scheduled the State of the Union message when the invitation from Modi came, it "certainly took the

AAP OUR MAIN RIVAL, CONGRESS NOT IN CONTEST IN DELHI, BJP’S VIJAY RATH HAS ARRIVED HERE, NEXT BIHAR: AMIT SHAH

New Delhi As the city heads for a high- pitched electoral battle, BJP Chief Amit Shah today said his party has a direct fight with “main rival” Aam Aadmi Party and claimed Congress was nowhere in the contest in Delhi assembly elections. In an address to BJP’s booth incharges in East Delhi, Shah asked them put in hard work and knock at every voter’s door to apprise them about AAP’s “lies” and said if the party wins in Delhi, then it will be “invincible” in the entire country. “The entire country as well as the world are now keenly watching Delhi elections. If we win in Delhi, then nobody can stop us elsewhere also. If we win Delhi election once, then nobody will be able to stop us from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from Atak to Cuttack,” he said. “In this Assembly poll, Congress is nowhere to be

seen. We have a fight only and only with Aam Aadmi Party,” Shah said.. Shah said 2014 was an “unprecedented year” for BJP as after win in Lok Sabha polls, its victory march continued in a number of states and is now is moving towards the national capital before going to Bihar. “Delhi needs a government which could work hand-in-hand with the Centre. Delhi needs a corruption-free government.Delhi needs a government which can feel the pain of people,” he said claiming “BJP can only give such government under the leadership of Kiran Bedi and the people of Delhi have realised it,” Shah said. The BJP President said inflation has come down and the price of petrol has been cut 11 times in the past eight months during the Narendra Modi rule. He said “on one hand, there is Modi’s leadership, Kiran ji’s leadership, and

on other side, there is Kejriwal who has gone out to become CM on the basis of lies.” Shah said Kejriwal had promised not to take the support of either BJP or Congress but later formed government with Congress backing. “They (AAP) said that they would take action against Sheilaji but they could do nothing beacuse they took the support of Congress. They also claimed that no raid was conducted on traders during AAP’s 49-day rule but several raids were conducted. .” “We were defeated in Delhi again and again because we did not follow our traditional strategy of giving prominence to booth incharge and panna pramukh,” Shah said. He also appealed to the party’s workers to tell people about the good works done by the Modi government, policies of BJP and contribution of Kiran Bedi to the society.

timing of the India trip into account in setting the date" and in its outreach to Congressional leaders. Turning to the chemistry between Modi and Obama, Rhodes noted that in their first conversation after Modi's election, "they noted some similarities in terms of how their campaigns kind of changed the way in which politics was practiced in their respective countries." "So I think what they shared off the bat was a similar experience of having run these very dynamic campaigns," he said. "And then during the Prime Minister's visit here I think they struck up a

very good chemistry" "So our hope is that the chemistry between the leaders and the personal

relationship can lead to positive outcomes for our country," Rhodes said. "And so it's worth the

investment in the relationship with the country, the leader, and the people of India."

PM launches Sukanya Samridhi Yojna under Beti Bachao campaign

New Delhi Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched a small deposit scheme for girl child, as part of the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign, which would fetch an interest rate of 9.1 per cent and provide income tax rebate. ‘Sukanya Samridhi Account’ can be opened at any time from the birth of a girl child till she attains the age of 10 years, with a minimum deposit of Rs 1000. A maximum of Rs 1.5 lakh can be deposited during the financial year. The account can be opened in any post office or authorised branches of commercial banks. “The scheme primarily ensures equitable share to a girl child in resources and savings of a family in which she is generally discriminated as against a male child,” said a government statement. In an effort to motivate

parents to open an account in the name of a girl child and for her welfare to deposit maximum of their savings upto the prescribed limits, higher rates of interest at 9.1 per cent is proposed to be given on the deposits on

annually compounded basis with income tax concession in this financial year, the statement said. The account will remain operative for 21 years from the date of opening of the account or marriage of the girl child after

attaining 18 years of age. To meet the requirement of higher education expenses, partial withdrawal of 50 per cent of the balance would be allowed after the girl child has attended 18 years of age.

Obama visit will tap into “unfulfilled” bilateral potential Days ahead of U.S. President Barack Obama arriving in India senior administration officials here characterised the bilateral relationship as having reached a “seminal moment,” even as they outlined a heavy agenda for the President’s engagement with the Modi government in New Delhi including civil nuclear cooperation, climate change, defence trade, economic ties and counterterrorism. In a background call with media here White House officials underscored the prominence attributed to the bilateral relationship, manifested in part by the fact that a range of U.S. leaders were accompanying the President to India, including First Lady Michelle Obama, National Security Advisor Susan Rice, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Chair and Co-Chair of the India Caucus respectively Senator Mark Warner and Representative Joseph Crowley, and Indian-American Congressman Ami Bera from California. The White House has clarified that the President’s daughters, Sasha and Malia, would not be joining the trip, as “Their priority is school, so they tend to travel on overseas visits that take place in the summer when that’s not the overriding factor.Although the officials, Deputy National Security Advisor For Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes and National Security Council Senior Director For South Asia Phil Reiner declined to preview specific deliverables or announcements for Mr. Obama’s upcoming trip to India they emphasised the “unique moment of opportunity” that the two governments for a “breakthrough.” A core focal point during the summit discussion in New Delhi will be opportunities for the business community in the bilateral space, and Mr. Obama will join Mr. Modi in participating in a CEO forum along with a substantial number of U.S. and Indian business leaders, Mr. Rhodes said. He added that Penny Pritzker, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, would also join these discussions. Work on civil nuclear cooperation and defence technology development, where progress has slowed owing to the Indian nuclear liability law and U.S. concerns over sensitive technology transfers, would see a “leader-level” push for solutions, Mr. Reiner noted. On counterterrorism, especially given concerns in India about Pakistan-based militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba, the U.S. officials gave assurances that the Obama administration was focused on those groups that are operating in South Asia. “When you look at the network of extremist groups that operate in that part of the world, from al Qaida to the Pakistani Taliban, to the Haqqani Network to LeT, we have significant counterterrorism cooperation with Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India that has been a priority of this administration from day one,” Mr. Rhodes said. On clean energy cooperation, which is likely to feature prominently on the bilateral agenda here, Mr. Rhodes referenced the recent U.S.-China breakthrough deal on climate change when he said, “The pressure comes from the reality of climate change, and every country should feel that urgency… There’s no such thing as a successful agreement unless all of the major emitters are doing their part, and India recognises that, just as China does, just as we do.”

Travellers using antibiotics can spread superbug ! A study has revealed that taking antibiotics for diarrhea may put travellers visiting developing parts of the world at higher risk for contracting superbugs and spreading these drugresistant bacteria to their home countries. Those travelling to South Asia faced the highest risk of contracting the resistant bacteria. Nearly 80 percent of travellers who took antibiotics for diarrhea while visiting the region were colonised with ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae, a concerning type of drugresistant superbug that is a serious threat to public health. Southeast Asia, East Asia, and North Africa together with the Middle East, in order, were next highest in risk. Researchers found that taking antibiotics for travellers' diarrhea increased the risk of becoming colonised by

ESBL bacteria. "The great majority of all cases of travellers' diarrhea are mild a nd resolve on their own," said lead study author Anu Kantele, associate professor in infectious diseases at Helsinki University Hospital in Finland. Kantele calls for greater caution in using antibiotics for travellers' diarrhea, except in severe cases. The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention has called ESBL-producing bacteria a serious concern and a significant threat to public health. The bacteria can cause severe infections that are harder and more expensive to treat and more likely to be fatal. In the study, researchers collected stool samples for testing from 430 Finns before and after they travelled outside of Scandinavia.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy team recreates Kolkata streets of 1943 For a particular chase scene, Dibakar Banerjee wanted to shoot on a live location in Kolkata to get an edgy, gritty feel to his neo-noir adaptation of Byomkesh Bakshy. The location that he chose was next to impossible to shoot in – In the heart of Central Business District in Kolkata, also known as BBD Bagh or Dalhousie Square. It’s a stone’s throw away from the Governor’s House, and also an area of highest security. Moreover, to make it look like a street of 1943 was a gargantuan task, as apart from the magnificent structure of Central Telegraph Office (CTO), which has been standing in the same place since 1878, nothing else would fit in. However it became possible with the wholehearted support of Kolkata Traffic Police, Kolkata Municipal Corporation & Central Tram Corporation (CTC). On the day of the shoot the streets were swarming with more than 400 junior artists dressed in period costumes, jostling with 40

Want to do more realistic films like 'Baby': Akshay Kumar

Mumbai, 22 January 2015 Akshay Kumar is a nononsense man. Reticent and hesitant, you hardly get him talking unless he's totally on the go! But when he's in his spirits, he can be the funniest to talk to. You ask him anything and he has an answer to everything. Almost EVERYTHING. Visibly excited about his upcoming release Baby, Akshay talks to us over simmering cups of coffee. He bonds with a particular set of directors whom he keeps on repeating with his films. Is it a conscious thing? 'No', Akki claims. "We bond because the directors are making the kind of films I want to work in. That is what has happened. There's nothing else in it. I did Waqt, Namastey London, Singh Is King, Aakhen, Action Replay and Holiday with Vipul and same with Neeraj. There's a sense of

compatibility with their films", he explained. Baby has a lot of gruelling action sequences, ones which have used the Octocopter drone to shoot the scenes. "It was a fantastic experience. With the Octocopter drone you can get some fantastic shots because that’s the thing what other cameras cannot do and it goes higher than you can imagine. You get great eagles points of view. While shooting for chase sequences, the camera comes behind you without anyone running. Technology helps a lot", Akshay continued, claiming that the action sequences in Baby is far more real than any of his other films. "The action in Baby is very real and it

does not go above the character. It is not like one person is hitting 15 to 20 people which is impossible in real life. Here, you see the man only going against one guy or at the max, a small group of guys which is plausible in real life too". Although Baby has opened to great reviews with Akshay showered with compliments from everywhere, the actor maintains a strong stance. 'There was no need to research', he said. "In fact Neeraj Pandey told me to not research as he has done all the research. I took little training for action but I have always done action throughout the career. I practised 4 to 5 days at Abu Dhabi where we have shot the major chunks of action in the film"

Khamoshiyan Actress Sapna Pabbi To Be New Sex Siren? vintage vehicles of that era. Elaborate traffic diversion plans were carried out by Kolkata Traffic Police so that the normal life remains unaffected. At the last moment news arrived that that Prime Minister was visiting the Governor House the same day. So the production team had to be in tandem with the SPG of PM’s security regarding the Traffic movement. Kolkata Police also allowed a Raj-era police bike kept in the Police museum to be taken out of the museum for the first time, and be used as a running vehicle on the shoot. It’s a Traffic Sergeant’s bike with a side car. In those days it wasn’t

an uncommon site to find Anglo-Indian & British Traffic Sergeants doing their customary round of the city on the bike. CTC allowed the team to use two of their oldest trams, one of them dating back to pre-1947 era. It took them 18 non-stop hours to take a live street of 2014 back by 71 years and make it into a street of 1943. With the help of Kolkata Municipal Corporation they took off all the contemporary street structures, pavement railings, traffic posts, Trident lamp posts and replaced them with period correct structures. They repainted all the street signs, zebra crossing, water hydrants etc to what they looked like in 1943.

Mumbai Does erotica sell? Going by the demand for it in Bollywood it would seem sex is foremost on Indian audiences’ minds. This line of thought seems to have gripped the producers of the Sapna Pabbi-Ali Fazal-Gurmeet Chowdhary triangle Khamoshiyan. It is no surprise that Pabbi, who was last seen playing Anil Kapoor’s daughter in the series 24 ,is being projected as the new sex bomb in town. “She is not like that at all. This is all a marketing strategy, to project her as the next Mallika Sherawat. Sapna is just going along with it,” says a concerned friend, adding that the last straw was the idea of a “midnight chat” with men.

Says the friend, “We were all horrified when the idea was mooted. At that time of the night the only men chatting with Sapna would not be gentleman. The though was horrific and not cool at all.” Apparently the idea of a midnight chatting session has now been dropped. “It was just not happening. We all felt concerned about the way Sapna was being projected. But this is her big ticket to Bollywood

and she doesn’t want to come across as a spoilsport,” says the friend.

BJP president Amit Shah on 2day Bihar visit from tomorrow Patna, Bihar With Assembly election in Bihar scheduled later this year, BJP president Amit Shah is arriving here tomorrow to rejuvenate the party workers to take on the combined might of Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar. Shah is arriving here on a two-day visit to take part in an anniversary function of veteran socialist leader and former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur, a BJP release said here today. The release issued by state party Vice-President and

Later in the day he would address a meeting of BJP leaders of block level from across the state. On Saturday, the BJP chief would pay a visit to the home of Loknayak Jayprakash Narayan and garland his statue. Shah would depart on Saturday noon. Union ministers Ravishankar Prasad, Radhamohan Singh, Rajiv

The BJP President’s visit is aimed at galvanising party rank and file to take on the might of RJD chief Lalu Prasad and JD(U)

investor who said that a European CEO told him that his company decided to abandon investment plans in India due to corruption. “I don’t blame that gentleman who suggested this because we have suffered because of corruption. It not only increases the cost of doing business but also hits India’s credibility,” the Finance Minister said. “There was a lot of mess to clear up,” Jaitley said. He was speaking at a CIIBCG breakfast meeting on the topic ‘India that Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to build’ on the sidelines of WEF annual meeting. “But a project on the basis

of corruption will anyway not succeed as we have a very strong judiciary. In recent times, major corruption cases have come in with regard to allocation of natural resources but new laws have addressed that part.” “Then there was

corruption involved in grant of permission (related to businesses), those provisions have also been rationalised,” Jaitley said. “In the last eight months, only one word that has not been even whispered in India is

corruption,” he said. Modi-led government came to power after sweeping the general polls in May last year. There have been instances of corruption in allocation of coal and spectrum in recent years.

NASA, Microsoft to help Mujahideen sleeper cells scientists virtually explore Mars alert Karnataka police NASA has teamed up with Microsoft to develop a new software that will enable scientists to work on Mars virtually using a wearable technology. Developed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the software called OnSight will give scientists a means to plan and, along with the Mars Curiosity rover, conduct science operations on the Red Planet. “OnSight gives our rover scientists the ability to walk around and explore Mars right from their offices,” said Dave Lavery, programme executive for the Mars Science Laboratory mission at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “It fundamentally changes our perception of Mars, and how we understand the Mars environment surrounding the rover,” said Lavery. OnSight will use real rover data and extend Curiosity’s

existing planning tools by creating a 3-D simulation of the Martian environment where scientists from world over can meet. Programme scientists will be able to examine the rover’s worksite from a first-person perspective, plan new activities and preview the results of their work firsthand. “We believe OnSight will enhance the ways in which we explore Mars and share that journey of exploration with the world,” said Jeff Norris, JPL’s OnSight project

manager. Until now, rover operations required scientists to examine Mars imagery on a computer screen. But even 3-D stereo views, lack a natural sense of depth that human vision employs to understand spatial relationships. JPL plans to begin testing OnSight in Curiosity mission operations later this year. Future applications may include Mars 2020 rover mission operations, and other applications in support of NASA’s journey to Mars.

An investigating officer pointed out: “It is clear that the members of the sleeper cells were to be pressed into service only when required. They might have used some other method or tool to recruit members of the sleeper cell.”

It was meant to be a dress rehearsal for the ODI World Cup next month but the Indian cricket team has been left grappling with selection issues in the ongoing tri-series against Australia and England, failing to find the combination that would be good enough for the marquee event. With two defeats in two matches against Australia and England respectively, there can be no doubt that India's World Cup preparation has gone awry.

This tri-series was meant to be a dress rehearsal for their title defence over the next two months, but there is a good chance now that India might not even make it to the tri-series final in Perth on February 1. Ever since the two new balls rule came into effect, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has shied away from playing seven batsmen in the eleven. The onus has been to rely on five full-time bowlers and his dependency on the part-timers has waned. Slowly, but steadily, India

have become a side that always plays six frontline batsmen in ODIs, irrespective of conditions. It has put focus on Dhoni's finishing abilities at number six and heaped pressure on Suresh Raina's role at number five. To hedge their bets in the middle order, make the batting line-up seem stronger, now Virat Kohli bats at number four and not number three, a position where he has scored 14 of his 21 ODI hundreds.

WhatsApp on web: 5 things it can’t do NEW DELHI With more than 700 million monthly active users, there's no doubt that WhatsApp is one of the largest mobile-focused messaging service. A large number of these users have been demanding a PC interface for the service to stay connected with their favourite people even when they switch devices. After a long wait, WhatsApp has finally introduced a way to access the service on a PC. However, there are several limitations attached to it as the interface is limited to a web browser. Here are five limitations of WhatsApp for web... 1. It doesn't support iPhone: WhatsApp for web essentially syncs messages between your smartphone and browser via its servers. At this time, the service does not support the iPhone. According to WhatsApp it's unable to provide the web client to iOS users due to Apple's platform limitations. Reports indicate that it intends to support the iPhone in the future but till then, if you use WhatsApp on an iPhone, you'll need to peep into your phone every time you get a WhatsApp

message even if you're in front of your computer. 2. Needs your phone to be on and connected to the internet: After pairing your smartphone with WhatsApp's web client through a QR code image, you'll be able to send and receive messages through your browser. But what if your phone loses the data connection or runs out of charge? Sadly, the WhatsApp web version will also go offline. Your phone needs to stay connected to the internet for the web client to work. 3. Doesn't support browsers other than Google Chrome: WhatsApp's web interface

only supports Google Chrome. So if you use Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer, you're out of luck. A number of IT environments restrict the use of applications not approved by admins. If you're part of one and can't use Chrome, you'll not be able to use WhatsApp for web. WhatsApp's justification is that Chrome's push technology is better. It's surprising that the service doesn't support Internet Explorer given Microsoft's investment in Facebook which owns WhatsApp. Also, it's worth pointing out that Google (the developer of Chrome) competes directly with Facebook.

For the last 15 days, Narayanbhai has been spinning the charkha. He is now out of the ICU and been shifted to a special ward. "While spinning the charkha, the motion of my hand and the entire process becomes one with my mind. It becomes meditative," he had once said. He had often cited Gandhi's views on the charkha: "If one has to establish a communion with God through some means, why not through the spinning wheel?" Gandhi had said in the May 8, 1937 edition of 'Harijan'.

A’bad jail officials warned against delay in disposing of pleas for furlough, parole AHMEDABAD Senior police officers are likely to face departmental action if they don't decide on parole and furlough applications of prison inmates within a specific timeframe. The home department issued a notification directing jail authorities and senior police officials across the state to carry out timely disposal of such applications by prisoners. This is not the first time the home department has issued such a notification. Earlier too, such notifications were issued but were not adhered to by officials authorized to

decide on parole and furlough applications. On an application for parole or furlough by an inmate, jail authorities seek the opinion of senior police officials, which they have to give as per rule 398 part three of the Police Manual. The fresh notification was necessitated after a recent order from the Gujarat High Court reprimanding the state government over delays in disposing off parole and furlough applications. The court had taken suo motu cognizance and filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in November last year after it found that over half of

parole and furlough applications were pending for a long time. "This amounts to violation of the rights of the prisoners and has to be viewed seriously," the court observed. In its latest notification, the home department stated that the delay in disposing parole and furlough applications and the PIL brought embarrassment to the state government. It warned of strict departmental action against officials who delay decisions on these applications. All officials have been asked to clear all applications older than 15 days at the earliest
