The Centre on Thursday ruled out the age of consent from 18 to 16 years under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, to prevent the criminalisation of the consensual relationships between the teenagers. Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani stated in the Rajya Sabha that there is no such proposal, in response to a question by CPI member Binoy Viswam. She dismissed the question with a short written answer: “Does not arise.” She further stated that as per the Indian Majority Act, 18 years is the age of majority and the POCSO “clearly defines a child as any person below the age of 18 years.” Only recently, Chief Justice of India Dr D Y Chandrachud had appealed to Parliament to consider concerns on the age of consent, considering teh fact that the “romantic relationships” form a substantial majority of cases under the POCSO Act.

The Rajasthan High Court on Thursday rejected a plea by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra seeking the quashing of an Enforcement Directorate case into the purchase of land in Bikaner by a company linked to him. The court of Justice P S Bhati, however, extended a stay on his arrest for two more weeks to allow him to appeal in a higher court. Vadra, the husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, faces investigation over a purchase of land in Bikaner’s Kolayat by Sky Light Hospitality LLP. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had filed an ECIR (Enforcement Case Information Report) based on a complaint regarding the purchase of 275 bighas of land in Kolayat. The land was allegedly purchased
in the name of the driver of a mediator, Mahesh Nagre, using a cheque given by Robert Vadra. Additional Solicitor General R D Rastogi, who is representing the ED, said the court has rejected the writ petition by Vadra to quash the ECIR. The ED had issued summons to Robert Vadra and his mother Maureen Vadra, reportedly partners at the Sky Light Hospitality LLP in November 2018 but none of them appeared before the agency. Union minister Anurag Thakur on Thursday said 104 YouTube channels, 45 videos, four Facebook accounts, three Instagram accounts, five Twitter handles and six websites have been blocked for spreading misinformation and threatening national security. Responding to questions in the Rajya Sabha, Mr Thakur said section 69A of the Information Technology
Act provides for blocking of content over digital media in the interest of the sovereignty or integrity of India, defence of India, security of the State, friendly relations with foreign States or public order or for preventing incitement to the commission of any cognizable offence relating to the above. He said under the provisions of PartII of the IT Rules, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued directions to block 1,643 usergenerated URLs, including webpages, websites, posts and accounts on social media platforms, from 2021 to October, 2022. ”The government has taken action under these rules and if required, we will not hesitate to take such action in the future,” Mr Thakur said.

The registration process for admission to entry-level classes in more than 1,800 private schools in Delhi for the 2023-24 academic session will end on Friday. The process had begun on December 1. A child needs to be at least four years old to fill the form for nursery admission. The age limit is five years for admission in kindergarten and at least six years for Class 1 as on March 31, 2023. According to a circular issued by the Delhi government’s Directorate of Education (DoE), the names of the first shortlisted students and the waiting list will be out on January 20. The second list of the students selected for
admission in entry-level classes will be uploaded on February 6. Private unaided recognised schools have already uploaded their criteria for admission on their respective websites. “No deviation from the above schedule shall be permitted. Each school shall display the aforesaid admission schedule on its notice board and website. Further, each school shall ensure that application forms for admission are made available to all applicants till the last date of submission,” the DoE circular had said. It had said a nonrefundable amount of only Rs 25 can be charged as the admission registration fee. The purchase of the prospectus of a school by the parents will be optional, it said.

Agency News: New Delhi Traffic to Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad passing through the Ashram flyover will remain affected due to construction work on the route. Both the carriages of the flyover will be closed for 45 days starting from December 25 to facilitate the Ashram flyover extension project. Delhi Traffic Police have been authorized to temporarily close the overpass. The completion of the extension may take up to the second week of February 2023. Police have given 45 days to the PWD to complete the work. Approximately, 3 lakh vehicles pass through Ashram Chowk during peak hours. With the closure of the Ashram flyover, the traffic pressure on Barapula, Kalindi Kunj, Mathura Road and ITO flyover will increase significantly. The trial was conducted using AI on Airtel’s 5G technology with ultra-low latency and high processing capabilities that resulted in detection of the colon cancer much faster and with greater accuracy. HealthNet Global, AWS and Avesha are the other three companies that
collaborated in these trials. As per current protocol, colon cancer is detected through colonoscopy procedure which is manual and requires great attention and time from medical practitioners for accurate detection. This procedure is performed using a device comprising a light, flexible tube with light, camera and tools at one end, which are used to extract samples to identify an infected polyp. Not only is the procedure long, its discomforting for patients and for the doctors and nurses who have to perform this procedure which takes around 30 to 40 minutes per case.

The combined entity will bring together diverse capabilities and the ability to pursue accelerated growth. The Board of Directors of KPTL and JMC approved the scheme of amalgamation in February 2022.
