The 11th round of talks between government and farm union leaders ended in deadlock on Friday as the government rejected the demand for repeal of the three contentious laws. These laws are the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020. No new date for next round of talks has been announced although the government said that the next round of talks will only take place if farm union representatives accept the previous proposal of the government of stalling the

implementation of farm laws for 18 months. The farmers have also reiterated their plan to carry out a Tractor Rally on Republic Day in Delhi. The rally in the national capital will run at the same time as Republic Day celebrations on January 26. The Delhi police

on Friday proposed a route map to the farmers where the farmers could hold a tractor rally on January 26. The farmer groups confirmed they had received a proposal from the police but said they would respond only after holding a meeting on Saturday.

The Border Security Force on Saturday found a 150-metre long underground tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir that had been used by Pakistani intelligence to infiltrate terrorists into India. This is the second tunnel to be spotted in 10 days by the border guarding force that last year went on campaign mode to detect and destroy a web of tunnels believed to have been built by Pakistan’s deep state, a senior BSF official said on Saturday. The 30-feet deep tunnel has been detected between Border Post number 14 and 15 near BSF’s outpost at Pansar, Kathua district. On the other side of the fence are Pakistani border outposts of Abhiyal Dogra and Kingre-de-Kothe in Shakargarh district.Pakistan’s Shakargarh, the area across the fence, is home to a terror training facility overseen by one of Jaish-e-Mohammed’s operational commander Kasim Jan who, Indian intelligence believes, was involved in the November 19 Nagrota encounter in Jammu and

bunker on the zero line in the vicinity. Not far from where the tunnel was found, a BSF assistant commandant Vinay Prasad who was leading a border domination patrol was killed by sniper fire from across the border in January 2019. Ten months later, a group of terrorists was noticed in the same area in November 2019. It is very important to detect all the tunnels built by the Pakistani military and its terrorists because the infiltration of terrorists through them practically nullifies the utility of deployment of soldiers along the Line of Control. When it becomes too difficult to cross the LoC, Pakistani terrorists use these tunnels,

a senior counterterror official said in Delhi. Border Security Force director general Rakesh Asthana had ordered the force to step up efforts to detect tunnels after the Nagrota encounter in November when security forces were able to trace the route taken by the terrorists who had crossed over using one of the many tunnels that the Pakistani military have built for the terrorists to sneak into India. Security officials underscore that proper engineering effort had gone into the construction of the tunnels that had been detected in recent times, pointing to the involvement of the Pakistani military along the heavily-guarded border.

We have savoured, enjoyed each and every moment, every part of our success. But we need to forget this, leave this behind, look forward to the future of England tour. We would have our plans for it. Bollywood actor Sonu Sood has moved the Supreme Court challenging Bombay High Court order rejecting his plea to quash or grant interim relief against a BMC notice over alleged illegal construction at his Juhu residential complex in Mumbai. On January 21, high court judge Justice Prithviraj Chavan dismissed Sood’s plea, saying law helps only those who are diligent. Advocate Vineet Dhanda, representing Sood, said his client has

challenged the High Court order in the Supreme Court. “Key grounds to challenge the High Court order are that it was projected by BMC that he is not the owner of the property. Though, he has been issued notice as an owner and occupier,” added Dhanda. Commenting on the case, Dhanda added that this is an attempt to tarnish his image, and no permission was required to carry out alterations inside the building. “Some harsh terms have been used against his client that he

is a habitual offender. This is too harsh on him and his image is being tarnished,” he added. Dhanda insisted that his client.

The petitioner on December 3 this year was informed that her enrollment was cancelled and that the enrolment number given to her belongs to Arjan Bhatti. The Covid-19 pandemic has changed many things, even the way blood is collected. With people not turning up to donate blood, the drying supply has prompted banks to go to donors’ homes and even offices to collect blood. In fact, the city recently hosted Gujarat’s, and perhaps India’s, first blood donation camp where the banks reached to the donors’ residence or workplace to collect units. Dr Vishwas Amin, medical director of the Ahmedabad chapter of Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), said that they carried out the camp with city-based Jain Lotus Group where they collected 700 units of blood between December 21and 31.“Buoyed by the success of the model, we have also started a similar camp with ADC Bank,” he said.Giving an insight into the process, Mayur Shah, president of Jain Lotus Group, said that it was their 25th consecutive year of blood donation.“We did not want the pandemic to interrupt our silver run. The IRCS agreed to send its blood collection vans after which we reached out to our 925 members, asking them to provide convenient date, time and location,” he said, adding that it was a success with a large number of donors coming forward not only from residential areas but also industrial areas of Odhav, Rakhial, Lambha, Ratanpur and so on.He added that it was an achievement of sorts as the donation

got marginally reduced from 800 units collected in 2019.The arrangement is not always economically viable – given the resources required to collect each unit. But Dr Amin said that it would be the way forward to engage more donors.Infection fear played major role in drop in collectionBut Dr Amin said that it would be the way forward to engage more donors. “Necessity is the mother of invention after we witnessed blood collection drop from 53,127 units collected in 2019-20 to 23,517 in the first nine months of 2020-21,” he said. In terms of average daily collection, the IRCS, Ahmedabad, recorded a drop of 40% from 146 in 2019-20 to 86 in the first nine months of 2020-21– coinciding with the onset of Covid pandemic. Officials said that even in most dire conditions, blood banks need

about 800 to 1,000 units monthly for the children with thalassemia and patients undergoing regular transfusion. Other blood banks also reported a similar drop. Dr Sanjay Gupta, immediate past president of Gujarat chapter of Indian Society of Blood Transfusion & Immunohaematology (ISBTI) and head of a blood bank with a corporate hospital, said that the collection is down by 40-45% compared to pre-Covid levels. Thus, the ‘door-to-door collection model’ could be the way forward, said Pritesh Mehta, a general manager with ADC Bank. “We are collecting about 40 units of blood from each of our 101branches as the donors found it a safer option. Our target is to collect 1000 units,” he said.Dr Ripal Shah, medical director of Prathma Blood Centre, said that they pioneered the blood collection van model, which worked perfectly during the pandemic when the donors were not willing to come to the donation camps.IIM-A, IIPH-G reports assess Covid response Two documents – one each by IIM Ahmedabad and IIPH Gandhinagar – lauded the efforts by the state government in reining in Covid-19. The reports were unveiled by the WHO and state government officials in Gandhinagar on Friday. The state officials said the reports highlighted action in urban areas, regular review meetings by the core committee, surveillance strategy and improving infrastructure with logistics as some of the key points for success of strategy.
