Congress walk out of Assembly session on swine flu issue Gandhinagar Congress MLAs staged a walk out during the Gujarat state assembly budget session which commenced here on Monday, after being dissatisfied with Gujarat State Health Minister Nitin Patel's answers to questions about swine flu in the House. During a discussion on steps taken by the Gujarat government to control swine flu outbreak in the state, Congress MLA Anil Joshiara alleged that staterun hospitals are not equipped to handle the influx

of new patients. He also alleged that the Gujarat state government doesn't have enough stock of medicines like Tamiflu tablets. However, Gujarat State Health Minister Nitin Patel refuted Joshiara's claims and challenged him to prove his allegations or resign. Patel claimed that if Congress MLA Joshiara proved his charges, he would be willing to resign as minister. Patel also stated that more than 55 per cent of swine flu patients have been cured,

movement activist Medha Patkar at Jantar Mantar and the activist said he will take the movement against the ordinance to each and every district of the country. “How can you take away land without farmer’s consent? India is an agricultural country. The government must think about the farmers. The land ordinance is undemocratic,” Hazare said. “The government cannot be indifferent to the farmers’ interest. This is a government of the people of India and not of England or America. It is the people who have made the government,” he said. The government is bringing

a new bill to replace the Land Ordinance amid stiff opposition from non-NDA parties in Parliament and outside. The Land Acquisition Act, 2013 stipulates mandatory consent of at least 70 per cent of land owners for acquiring land for Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects and 80 per cent for acquiring land for

private companies. In December last, the government had promulgated the Ordinance making significant changes in the Land Act including removal of consent clause for acquiring land for five areas –industrial corridors, PPP projects, rural infrastructure, affordable housing and defence.

BJP takes dig at Congress over Rahul’s ‘sabbatical’ absence

New Delhi, The absence of AICC vicepresident Rahul Gandhi on the first day of the Budget session today invited criticism from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which took a dig at Congress saying that it has been reduced to 44 seats in Lok Sabha due its leaders

skipping the Parliament in the last one decade. andhi has gone on a sabbatical “for a few weeks” to reflect upon recent events and the future of Congress. ithout taking Gandhi’s name, BJP’s youth wing chief and MP Anurag Thakur said Congress has been reduced to 44 seats in the Lok Sabha due to the absence of its leaders in the Parliament in the last one decade. “They were missing in the last two Lok Sabhas as well. And this is why the Congress has come to 44 seats in Lok

Sabha,” he told reporters when asked about Gandhi’s absence. He, however, added that there could have been some compulsion because of which Gandhi could not come. Meanwhile, senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily, when asked by reporters to comment on Gandhi’s absence, said his party would continue to function as an effective and constructive opposition under the guidance of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi.

Mumbai attack mastermind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi challenges detention Islamabad Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, the 2008 Mumbai attack mastermind, on Monday challenged his detention under a public security act in the Islamabad High Court (IHC), saying the government has detained him on "illegal grounds". "We have challenged the detention of Mr Lakhvi in the IHC. The government has detained him on illegal grounds. After bail from the trial court, the government had no legal justification to detain Lakhvi under Public Maintenance Order," Lakhvi's counsel Raja Rizwan Abbasi said. The government transferred the

26/11 case from AntiTerrorism Court (ATC) (I) to the recently-established ATC (II) here on January 14 without giving any reason. On December 18, 2014, the trial court granted bail to 54year-old Lakhvi but was detained the next day under the Maintenance of Public

Order (MPO). Pakistan faced strong reaction from India following the bail order. He has been kept in the highsecurity Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi till second week of the next month under the same order after the Pakistan government extended his detention by 30 days.

Rahul Gandhi's sabbatical exposes Congress faultlines Rahul Gandhi's surprise sabbatical has exposed faultlines in the electorally-battered Congress, which is bracing for a generational change. The party has tried to downplay Gandhi's sudden move saying he is the leader and will come back soon to play a pro-active role in party affairs. While party sources deny that the break by Gandhi indicates any reluctance on his part to lead the party or renounce politics, the buzz goes that the Congress Vice President was not quite okay with a number of his ideas not being implemented in the parent party after he took over as its Vice President in January 2013 after Chintan Shivir in Jaipur. "It's not that he is quitting politics or will not take any other responsibility. It will also be wrong to say he is sulking and so he did. That is not his way of doing politics. There are issues and he wants to reflect. After all if he has to lead, he will like do it with his ideas. "He will utilize the sabbatical time to reflect, regroup and chart out the course" for the the party, which braces for the AICC session in April, where Congress is likely to come up with a revival roadmap," the sources said. While Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said that such retreats are common for leaders worldwide, the timing of the sabbatical has left many wondering as it happens when the crucial Budget session is on and the party is planning to launch a major agitation on the land ordinance. Gandhi, whose left of the Centre tilt, is well-known, had played a key role in passage of the land acquisition surmounting the doubts expressed within sections of his own party. The Congress Vice President's "tear act" in 2013 had caught the rank and file of the party by surprise. At a press conference at Press Club of India here in September 2013, Gandhi had walked in and denounced the controversial ordinance pushed by the UPA government to negate the Supreme Court verdict on convicted lawmakers as "complete nonsense" and had said what "our government has done is wrong". There were different opinions within the party itself on the issue. A number of ideas of Rahul Gandhi are found to be too radical within some sections of the party, which are not very amused with them and Gandhi had to negotiate with the pulls and pressures in getting them implemented. A number of measures like opening up Youth Congress to elections was not welcomed by sections in the party. Gandhi wanted to implement several new ideas in the party, which have failed to see the light of the day. The Congress Vice President was keen that the practice of high command making key appointments in the party is done away with. He also favoured election to the top posts including in Congress Working Committee, where nomination has been the way so far. Gandhi's idea to hold primaries in election going seats was given a go-by after his experiment failed in Lok Sabha with none of the Congress candidates winning in 16 Parliamentary seats, where he had brought in US-style primary mode to elect candidates. Party sources close to Gandhi said there could be more clarity on issues, when he puts forth his "plan of action" at the AICC meet. Gandhi has always given indications that he feels that Congress like other parties is not doing enough to empower the workers at the grass root.

World Cup: India defeat shows South Africa might be feeling the pressure

Melbourne The 2015 World Cup has got off to a flying start. Despite the wishes of the ICC that every match be close, we have had a series of matches dominated by the mentally stronger team. Yesterday, we saw another one. India had never beaten South Africa in a World Cup match. Their tour of Australia before the World Cup had been a disaster. They couldn't win one of the four Tests, and were

thumped in the recent ODI Tri series by Australia and England. Again, they did not win a match. Given where England are the moment, one could be forgiven for thinking that India may as well have packed up and gone home prior to the World Cup. South Africa also entered the tournament slightly behind the eight ball. Although they won the ODI Tri Series between Zimbabwe and Australia late last year, they couldn't

back it up in Oz. A 4-1 ODI series loss to the home side in November really put them on the back foot. They then had a warm up series against a West Indian team in freefall. An almost clean sweep here didn't really teach us much. South Africa have everything going for them. It is an easy case to make to say that they have the best batting and bowling line up in the World Cup. However, their first lead up game in Australia was a thumping at the hands of New Zealand. We wrote this off as just a bad day. It happens. The Kiwis are actually a decent side. Then came a C grade performance against the Zimbabweans. Yes, South Africa got away with the win. However, it was very non convincing. The scoreline flattered the Proteas. They were outplayed for most of that match.

HSBC CEO also had a Swiss a/c; pay frozen after cut in 2014 London At the centre of a controversy over himself having a Swiss bank account, UK-based banking major HSBC's CEO Stuart Gulliver will not get any salary hike this year, after he took a pay cut last year to USD 12.5 million. In its annual report published today, the bank disclosed that Gulliver's total pay package stood at 7.62 million British pounds (USD 12.5 million) in 2014, down from 8.03 million British pound in the previous year. Explaining its "remuneration policy going forward", HSBC further said that the base salary levels, fixed pay allowances and pension allowances as a percentage of base salary would remain unchanged from the 2014 levels for Gulliver, as also for some other top executives

during 2015. The variable pay components -- annual incentive and Group Performance Share Plan (GPSP) -- and other benefits would also remain unchanged from the 2014 levels. As a result, Gulliver will get a base salary of 1.25 million British pound, a fixed pay allowance of 1.7 million British pound, pension allowance at 50 per cent of base salary, along with other benefits and variable annual incentives during 2015. Taking forward the disclosures from the so-called 'SwissLeaks' series about offshore clients of HSBC's Swiss banking unit, the Guardian newspaper reported that Gulliver was himself a client of HSBC's Swiss banking arm that is being probed for allegedly helping wealthy clients from across the world evade taxes.

CHRISTCHURCH Moeen Ali scored 128 and took two wickets as England hauled its Cricket World Cup campaign back onto the rails after two demoralising losses with a 119-run win over Scotland. After losing to Australia by 111 runs and to New Zealand by eight wickets, England entered Monday’s match against second-tier Scotland shaken, apprehensive and desperate for a win to lessen the threat of an early tournament exit. It used as its inspiration for the match the story of the host city Christchurch which has been substantially rebuilt since being devastated by an earthquake four years ago. England adopted the motif of rebuilding, laying a foundation with Ali’s 172run opening partnership with Ian Bell (54), reaching 303/ 8, and it added structure in bowling out Scotland for 184. Steven Finn may have made the biggest single form reversal by an England player, taking 3/26 from nine overs; the two overs he

SPORTS ROUNDUP ICC WORLD CUP-2015

ICC World Cup 2015: Teams will now take India's bowling seriously

Melbourne Two clinical but extremely convincing wins has set the ball rolling in the right direction for Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men. The much assailed Indian bowling line-up would undoubtedly be the most discussed topic hereon in the team meetings of most countries in the tournament. More than the talent that the Indian bowlers do indeed possess, it is the process of execution which has caught the opposition offguard. The actual process though started much before a single delivery was bowled in either game the Indian team has been involved in. For, it was

the pressure created by the India batsmen, who have scored more than 300 runs each time that has been the beginning of the India bowling plans. Once set on their way by the batsmen, it has been all about hunting collectively and executing game plans, both individual ones and the team gameplan as a whole. It has been very clear that there is a process that has been drilled into each bowler's mind, and they have then set about letting that process take over. There is no greater delight than seeing plans come good through good execution, more so in the face of extreme pressure which a World Cup game

brings about automatically. Pressure is an extremely undesirable aspect of the game but as in life, something that cannot be avoided. However, when your batsmen are good enough to transfer some of that onto the opposition, then it's time to cash in, something the India bowlers have done twice now. When faced with totals of 300 and above, the approach of the batsmen is different, the score being enough to weigh them down more than a bit. If the bowlers manage to add to that pressure by pitching the ball in the right areas, the combination can be quite lethal.

bowled against New Zealand on Friday had cost 49 runs. But England’s performance was far from complete — it should have built far more strongly on an opening stand which was the largest by an England pair in a World Cup match. Its middle order failed and it lost the wickets of Ali, Gary

Ballance (10) and Joe Root (1) in the space of 10 balls to slip to from 201/1 to 203/ 4. Captain Eoin Morgan hinted at the onset of some batting form, scoring 46 from 42 balls to stiffen the latter part of the innings, putting on 49 with James Taylor (17) and 45 with Jos Buttler (24).

World Cup 2015: Flexibility is Ajinkya Rahane's key strength, says MS Dhoni PERTH Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni feels that talented Mumbai batsman Ajinkya Rahane is one player who has improved by leaps and bounds in recent times and is ready to don any hat for the team's cause. A Test century each in Wellington, Lord's and Melbourne bore hallmark of his class and his skipper is the first one to acknowledge that he is fast emerging into a force in limited overs format as well. "Well, there has been improvement, irrespective of the format. In Twenty20, ODIs or as a Test player, he (Rahane) has

Ahmedabad

really improved," Dhoni was quick to admit Rahane's growing stature in the team after his impactful knock against the Proteas at MCG on Sunday. According to Dhoni, the biggest advantage of Rahane is his flexibility and readiness to new ideas. "Rahane is definitely one of the individuals, who is not really rigid. He is quite open to ideas," the skipper was all praise for the 26-year-old's adaptable approach. The skipper said Rahane will always come up with a feedback after he has tried executing a new strategy or idea. "Once he tries out a

new idea, he gives you a good response as to whether it's working or not working for him. Also he's one of the fittest guys. You see him on the field, he's very quick, and his intensity actually never drops right from the first over until the 90th over. If you see a Test match, which to me is what fitness is all about," Dhoni said. Dhoni has always been generous in his praise for his colleagues.

Melbourne There is a ritual among Bengalis called jamai shasthi (son-in-law and sixth day of the lunar cycle) where the son-in-law is fed to near death, although it is the mother-in-law who prays for his long life. Now, what is the link? Shikhar Dhawan is married to a Bengali, Ayesha Mukherjee, who lives in Melbourne. So, if the batsman visits his in-laws after Sunday’s heroics, the reception is likely to overwhelm him. Dhawan wasn’t asked at the postmatch presentation ceremony whether his century at the MCG had added significance and he didn’t bring up the topic. But just before leaving for celebrations in the dressing room, he grabbed the

microphone from presenter Pommie Mbangwa, the former Zimbabwe pacer, and thanked the fans for turning up in numbers to support India. Dhawan has struggled for runs since India arrived in Australia. He got some starts, but not a big one. The voices in favour of dropping him and trying out Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane as openers and bringing in Ambati Rayudu were growing. Had Rohit not got injured after the triseries opener, Dhoni might have been forced to leave him out. Eventually the idea of going in with a left-right combination prevailed and Dhawan stayed on. Against Pakistan, he was timing the ball well but a mix-up with Virat Kohli resulted in his run out. On Sunday, he was

involved in another run out, this time Rohit backing up a long way. He was under pressure and the incident could have only added to it. But Shikhar looked positive and got support from Kohli and Rahane. His 137 turned out to be the difference between the two sides. He acknowledged the team effort. “Virat was a great support early on because he was coming here on the back of a century, we were running between the wickets well today. Then when Ajinkya joined me he was on top of the bowling from the start and that took pressure off me,” he said. After struggling against the short ball for the past three months, it was obvious the South Africa pacers would dig it in.

Women bootleggers turn jewelry GU senate polls: ABVP, artisans with Rajkot Police at help NSUI supporters clash Rajkot Kubaliyapara on the eastern bank of Aji River in Rajkot city is a slum pocket. A few days ago, a team of Thorala police station conducted raid and arrested a lady bootlegger with five liter of country liquor worth Rs 200 only. But while searching her house, the police team had mixed feelings. The lady`s husband was in bed. He was seriously ill. Her four children were crying for food. The woman’s attempt was to sell the Rs 200 worth of liquor to buy food and medicine for her family. Assessing the situation, assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Banno Joshi turned a little emotional. She decided to handle this case differently from the routine police ways. Now, the woman bootlegger is selfemployed. She works for an imitation jewelry firm, molding beautiful bangles, hairpins and necklaces. Your

imitation ornament may be the one made by this lady. After Rajkot city police approached the problem in a constructive way, almost 15 woman bootleggers have given up their illegal activity and have become selfemployed. ACP Joshi says, “We surveyed this slum area and identified woman bootleggers, who are breadwinners of their families. Some of them are widows, divorcees or whose husbands are in jail. Each of these women has been booked in more than 10 case of prohibition. We met and counselled them. After that, all agreed to abandon their illegal activity.” Joshi further says that rehabilitating and reintroducing these women in the society was a big challenge. “We first decided to give them tailoring machines. The paper, 'Make in India: Re-chanting the Mantra with a Difference' by Prof Satish Deodhar traces the origin and idea of Make in India through time and

reveals that the story of 'Make in India' evolved in 1901 when economists like Dadabhai Nauroji lamented the economic drain of India by the colonial masters. Raw material was being procured cheaply from Indians and shipped out to get it processed in England, only to be shipped back and sold to Indians for a profit. At the turn of the 19th century it was Laxmanrao Kirloskar who produced India's first iron plough and Sir Jamshedji Tata's efforts paved way for India's first steel mill.
