Will too many cooks spoil the Opposition broth? Many players in the national oppositioncamp are trying to come together ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls against the BJP. Youhave Congress President Sonia Gandhi attempting to form a united opposition coalition. Youhave West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee trying to develop a non- Congress non-BJP coalition with the help of Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar. Then youhave the Telangana chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao who wants to form a federal frontwithout Congress. Tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. Stalin is the new entrant to this effort.Talk of a federal front of regional parties without Congress to take on the BJP in 2024elections has gained ground in the last few weeks. By leading a national party, Congressgets the prime place to unite the Opposition. Without Congress, however weak it is today, any opposition front will not succeed. Sonia Gandhi held a meeting last August of 19 politicalparties but did not take it further. She then appealed to the Opposition to come together, focusing on defeating the BJP in 2024. Lok Sabha polls. Congress party is waiting for thecurrent five state Assembly election results on March 10 to take further steps. Therefore there is an inherent contradiction in the splintered opposition camp—regionalsatraps, with a stronghold on their respective fiefdoms, dream of succeeding Narebdra Modi. The precedents of Deve Gowda, I. K. Gujral and Chandrasekhar give them this hope.If it retains Punjab, succeeds in Goa, and snatches Uttarakhand in the current Assemblypolls, the Congress party has a chance of uniting the Opposition. In 2017, though Congressemerged as the single largest party in Goa and Manipur, the BJP formed the government inboth states, luring defections. Moreover, while opposition leaders like Sharad Pawar,Mamata Banerjee, and others might agree to work under Sonia Gandhi, they do not acceptRahul Gandhi as their leader.Mamata proposes calling a non-BJP chief minister conference in Delhi, where KCR, TamilNadu chief minister M K Stalin, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray, will participate in theemerging federal Front. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin recent statement that aconvention of non-NDA CMs will be organized in Delhi confirms it. Efforts are on to mobiliseas many non-BJP CMs as possible, including BJD, YSR Congress, and the CPI(M) ledgovernment in Kerala.. The CPI-M mouthpiece Peopledemocracy said in its latesteditorial, "Talk of a federal front by Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao orMamata Banerjeattempt to project herself as heading an alternative alliance are politicalmatters, which should not be mixed up with the task of bringing all chief ministers of nonBJPstate governments together. The second reason is the souring of Centre-state relations on various issues — fromexpanding role of investigative agencies to GST, IAS cadre rules, and sharing of PDS data.CMs of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Kerala, etc., have also been complainingthat their respective governors are infringing on the rights of the elected government.Mamata Banerjee claims they try to &protect the country federal structure from gettingbulldozedThirdly, some regional leaders like Mamata Banerjee, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, and ArvindKejriwal have won the state continuously in the past decade. These politically strong stateleaders believe that the time for moving to the Centre has come now. In other words, regionalism is raising its head.India had seen such an alternate Front before. This coalition included the Janata Party in1977, the National Front in 1989, United Front in 1996 but all of them had a brief rule.National parties like The National Front (supported by BJP) and the United Front (supportedby Congress) came later. There are two problems for these alternate fronts to survive. The first is that they lackprogrammatic coherence, and the second is who will lead this Front. There are pros and cons of such a ragtag coalition of regional parties. As former primeminister Atal Behari Vajpayee and also Dr. Manmohan Singh experienced, they keep thecoalition leader under check. Like Telugu Desam chief Chandrababu Naidu, they couldbargain funds for their respective states or, like Jayalalithaa, demand cabinet berths of theirchoice. But all these are at the cost of a stable government. Except for UPA and NDA, othercoalition governments did not last long.Indeed, the contours of the - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara federal Front are likely to emerge.

near a nine-month high hit in the last session, as safe-haven demand was offset by a rise in Treasury yields following the first wave of U.S. and European sanctions on Russia for sending troops into eastern Ukraine. The U.S., the European Union and Britain announced plans to target banks and elites while Germany halted a major gas pipeline project from Russia. Spot gold was little changed at $1,898.63 per ounce, after scaling its highest since June 1 at $1,913.89 per ounce on Tuesday. U.S. gold futures shed 0.3 per cent to $1,901.90.

with gains, hoping that war in Ukraine can be avoided after US, Japan and European powers imposed sanctions on Russia. Stocks closed lower on Wall Street on Tuesday, after Russia sent forces into Ukraine’s eastern regions, escalating tensions. Russian President Vladimir Putin recognised the independence of rebel-held regions of Ukraine, raising fears of an imminent full-scale invasion. US Secretary of State Tony Blinken on Tuesday

cancelled his scheduled meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov later this week in protest against what he said was the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Brent crude futures were at USD 96.74 a barrel, having eased off Tuesday’s top of USD 99.50. Foreign institutional investors continued their selling spree in Indian markets as they offloaded shares worth ₹3,245.52 crore on a net basis on Tuesday, as per exchange data.

US stocks tumble as Biden announces new Russia sanctions Agency News: New Delhi Wall Street stocks fell sharply Tuesday after US President Joe Biden announced new sanctions on Russia following its latest escalations in the Ukraine crisis. Biden, in a White House address, said the penalties on Russia would go “far beyond” existing sanctions and include moves to cut the country off from Western financing by targeting Moscow’s sovereign debt. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished down 1.4 percent, or about 480 points, at 33,596.61. The broad-based S&P 500 dropped 1.0 percent to 4,304.76, while the techrich Nasdaq Composite Index

slid 1.2 percent to 13,381.52. On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin defied Western warnings and approved sending troops into eastern Ukraine to support two rebel regions’ independence claims. The move prompted significant new sanctions outside of Washington, with Germany halting certification of a key natural gas pipeline. A note from Oanda’s Edward Moya described the Ukraine situation as a threat to markets because of the risk energy costs will “skyrocket,” noting that fears of war in eastern Europe have already caused a market pullback. Geopolitical tensions will continue to undermine economic growth.
