How an Odia queen became medieval Sri Lanka’s greatest politician

Near the ruins of the royal palace at Polonnaruwa—Sri Lanka’s most important medieval city—is a rather unassuming open-aired hall. On one of its stone slabs is an inscription of a queen called SundaraMahadevi, or Sundari, from the distant land of Kalinga (present-day Odisha). Her unassuming stone inscription reveals a wild history of dynastic intermarriage and international political wrangles, behind which loomed the growing power of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist Sangha. To understand how an Odia queen ended up in Lanka in the first place, we need to note that such exchanges are not exactly surprising.

As seen in an earlier edition of Thinking Medieval, the island was deeply integrated into South Asian movements of goods, people, ideas, and capital. One of the most visible aspects of this was the sheer degree of intermarriage between the island and mainland dynasties.

Up to the 7th century CE, notes historian Thomas Trautmann in Consanguineous Marriage in Pali Literature (1973, cited in Gornall 2020, page 20), Sri Lankan royalty married almost exclusively among themselves. The island’s governors, generals, and officials all came from within the same family tree (or family bush). But as exchanges with the mainland grew in the 8th and 9th centuries, political and matrimonial alliances were made with dynasties from South India, especially the Pallavas of Kanchipuram. In the 11th century, the Cholas emerged as an existential threat to Lankan sovereignty, extinguishing the island’s line of kings at Anuradhapura. Lanka’s political structure shattered, and new chiefs rose to take control of its different regions. It is in this context that queens from Odisha begin to rise to prominence, appearing in monastic chronicles such as the Culavamsa as well as in the inscriptional record.

Mumbai police have collected the handwriting and voice samples of Aniksha Jaisinghani, who is accused of trying to blackmail and bribe Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s wife Amruta, for forensic analysis, an official said on Thursday. Aniksha, daughter of suspected bookie Anil Jaisinghani, was arrested on March 16 for allegedly attempting to offer Rs 1 crore to Amruta for intervening in a criminal case and also threatening her. Anil Jaisinghani, also an accused in the case, was arrested on March 20 from Gujarat. According to the official,

Aniksha had shot a video of a bag being filled with currency notes worth Rs 1 crore and sent the clip to Amruta from another mobile number after the complainant blocked her number. As the video also had the voice of Aniksha, officials from the Malabar Hill police station, where the case was registered on Amruta’s complaint, collected her voice samples for forensic analysis, the official said. Police have also examined voice chats and other related data in Aniksha’s iPhone, he said. The total data is more than 100 GB, the official said. Aniksha had allegedly given an envelope with some notes written in a code language to the complainant. This prompted the police to collect her handwriting samples.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday reacted to a statement by an Arch Bishop of the Roman Catholic church in Thalassery, Mar Joseph Pamplani which led to a political showdown in the state. The Archbishop had said, “The believers of the church will help the BJP to elect its first MP from the state if the union government raises the price of natural rubber to ₹300 per kg.” Vijayan responded and asserted that the BJP’s polarisation agenda won’t work in the southern state, which has always opposed communalism tooth and nail.

Apparently referring to Thalassery

Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany, who made a statement recently that his community could help the BJP if that party addressed the concerns of farmers, Vijayan said such “opportunists” do not represent the people of Kerala. “Just because some opportunists say some things, Sangh Parivar and their leaders shouldn’t think that this is the general sentiment of Kerala,” CM Vijayan said. “BJP has played all sorts of games since its Jan Sangh period to win a seat in the Assembly. Finally, they got one in 2016. We all know now how they got it. Congress lost all its votes in that particular constituency and helped BJP defeat the Left candidate,” CM Vijayan said. In addition, the CM said his party publicly announced that BJP’s account in the state would be closed during the 2021 election. “There will be some people who will fall for such tactics. Such people do not represent the common sentiments of the state. The common sentiment of Kerala is that secularism must be protected,” Vijayan further said.
