CUET has been made mandatory for admission to all central universities from this year. Till last year, Delhi University admitted students on the basis of marks cut-off in Class 12 board exams. Haneet Gandhi, Dean (admissions), said candidates will be able to appear for the CUET only in those subjects which they have studied in class 12. The merit
will also be calculated on the basis of combination of only those subjects in which the candidate has appeared in the CUET, she said.Gap year students will also be eligible to apply for CUET, she said, adding, no student will be at a disadvantage if they change the stream. To ease supply strain on coal stocks, Railways to boost rakes Agency News: New Delhi
The Railways is set to boost the number of rakes for transporting coal to thermal plants, which are reeling under pressure from high power demand during the summer season and low coal stocks.A government official told Railways will increase the number of rakes for transporting coal to powerhouses to 415 per day from about 380 in the first half of April, after a review meeting by the Ministers of Home, Power, Railways, and Coal.Coal-based thermal power meets about 75 per cent of the country’s requirements. Several states, including Punjab, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Andhra Pradesh, have faced power outages due to low coal inventories. The
official added the Railways was attempting to increase the rakes to 445 per day, using “all sources and all means.” The total rakes of domestic and imported coal dispatched to power houses fell to about 380 per day in the first half of April from about 409 per day in March. The lack of adequate rakes has thus far been a key bottleneck to boosting stock levels, with officials saying that the domestic coal supply chain was not geared to meet the current demand level, given the lower supply of imported coal.A spike in the international prices has led to a number of thermal plants, which use imported coal, stopping supply, and thereby putting increasing pressure on domestic coal-fired plants. With foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) on a selling spree, the ownership of FPIs in Indian stocks has fallen by around two percentage points in the last two years to 19.5 per cent as of March 2022 based on data reported by NSE500 companies.“FPI ownership levels fell below Covid lows at 19.5 per cent on the back of sustained outflows,” Bank of America (BoFA) Securities said in a report. The month of March 2022 marked the 6th consecutive month of FPI outflows ($5.4 billion, most severe since March 2020) on the back of continued geopolitical risks, sustained elevated inflation led by supply side issues, rising commodity costs, BoFA Securities said.
