Militants hit two police posts in Srinagar on Monday morning and shot at least three policemen dead, the first such attack in the Jammu and Kashmir capital in years. ISRO to bring down the cost of satellite launches, which will make it an even more attractive player in the international market and bring down the cost of its own future missions. This is an important consideration as there have been frequent allegations that ISRO’s missions are a waste of money given that India still struggles to provide people with the most basic of amenities. Space technology is very expensive. India currently uses two kinds of launch vehicles — PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle)
and GSLV (Geostationary Satellite Launch Vehicle). The PSLV is the older of the two and the more successful, having already clocked 30 successful launches. GSLV, which began in earnest only during the 1990s, has had four successful flights but an equal number of failures too. An advanced version of the GSLV, called Mk-III, that will be capable of putting very heavy satellites – up to about 4,000 kg — into space is still under development. The PSLV can carry satellites up to about 1,500 kg in weight.

Iran is a country India can no longer ignore
It is no secret that Prime Minister Narendra Modi plans to visit Israel. But it is a measure of the confidence in the depth of ties between Tel Aviv and New Delhi — and the importance of Iran for India’s interests that the PM is able to visit Tehran first. And rightly so. Iran’s re-emergence in world affairs after decades of isolation is forcing significant realignments in the region. With a population of 77 million, an educated workforce, civilisational confidence and geostrategic location as a potential bridge between Europe and Asia, Iran is not a country that the world or India can ignore. Even though India-Iran ties have had an on-off character owing to the sanctions imposed by the US, which forced New Delhi to scale back contact, there is plenty of mutual interest to consolidate ties. Iran needs investment to rebuild its infrastructure while India is driven by strategic imperatives that go beyond the customary focus on hydrocarbons. This is evident from the bilateral contract that will allow India to develop the Chahbahar port, through an initial $150 million line of credit from the Exim Bank. This is an agenda item that has barely moved since 2003 but now assumes urgency owing to Beijing’s plans to operationalise the Gwadar port as part of the $46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. To counter this India wants to participate in railway projects that connect Chahbahar-Zahedan-Mashhad (in Iran) which can be a potential gateway for Indian goods heading to Russia and Europe. Through the Tripartite Trade and Transport Agreement signed with Afghanistan, India will help develop the Chahbahar-Zahedan-Zaranj corridor that will develop connectivity with Afghanistan and Central Asia, countering the lack of two-way transit rights through Pakistan to Afghanistan, which Islamabad has not accorded to India despite the obvious economic benefits to the three countries. The list of bilateral agreements signed during Modi’s visit suggests that both sides are keen on improving contact between their policy collectives and wider publics. MoUs on culture have been signed in addition to those extending dialogues between think tanks and training of diplomats. All this will hopefully lead to a greater acquaintance with Iranian society, politics and artistic expression that Indian audiences have lost touch with over the decades. The commitments to develop Chahbahar port and connectivity within Iran and Afghanistan are significant ventures. But New Delhi ought to ensure that they are delivered on time. India’s record on delivering promised infrastructure is patchy as the experience with Nepal shows. We cannot continue to let China move into vacuums we have created.

Six persons, including three policemen, were injured in a clash between two communities at Petlad town in Anand district today, prompting police to use teargas to disperse the mob which hurled stones and damaged a few vehicles. Anandiben Patel-government, which completed two years on Sunday, announced that 6,000 of around 18,000 villages in Gujarat have become open defecation free (ODF), and the rest would be ODF much before the 2019 deadline, set by the Centre under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The declaration was made by MoS for Panchayat & Rural Development (Independent Charge) Jayanti Kavadia at Mahatma Mandir here at an official programme to launch ambitious Smart Village project of the Gujarat government in the presence of Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, other senior ministers and bureaucrats. have built more than 12.5 lakh toilets across Gujarat. As a result, 6,000 villages are now open defecation free. As of now, 30 talukas in the state have 100 per cent toilet facility,” said Kavadia. “The Centre wants each state to achieve 100 per cent target by 2019, the year when the nation will celebrate 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Asaram’s alleged henchman Karthik Haldar, suspected of shooting dead three key witnesses of two rape cases against the self-styled godman and his son Narayan Sai, had planned to acquire an AK-47 rifle for eliminating other witnesses, police said. Haldar, a sharp-shooter and staunch follower of Asaram, was arrested from Raipur in Chhattisgarh on March 13 in a joint operation by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and city Crime Branch. He is now in the custody of Rajasthan Police for further probe, city Crime Branch’s Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) K N Patel said today. During his interrogation here, Haldar had admitted that he wanted to acquire an AK-47 rifle or a similar capacity “large” weapon to carry out the killings, Patel said. “In his statement, Haldar admitted that other sadhaks (disciples) of
