Need a CEC who can even take action against PM, says Supreme Court Agency News : New Delhi The Supreme Court on Wednesday orally observed that the need is for a Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) who can even take action against the Prime Minister and also asked the Centre to show the mechanism adopted in the appointment of an Election Commissioner (EC) last week. A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Justice K.M. Joseph said: “We need a CEC who can even take action against a PM.” The bench, also comprising Justices Ajay Rastogi, Aniruddha Bose, Hrishikesh Roy and C.T. Ravikumar, said suppose for example, there is some allegation against the Prime Minister and the CEC has to act, but the latter is weak-kneed and does not act. The bench queried the Centre’s counsel that was it not a complete breakdown of the system. The CEC is supposed to be insulated from political influence and should be independent. It further added that these are aspects on which “you (the Centre’s counsel) must delve into,

A special Terrorist and Disruptive Activity (TADA) court on Wednesday issued a production warrant against Yasin Malik in connection with the IAF personnel killing case. Yasin Malik who heads a banned faction named Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) is accused of being involved in the killing of four Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel in Kashmir, in 1990. Speaking about the judgement, CBI lawyer Monika Kohli informed, “TADA court today issued a production warrant for Yasin Malik, next date of hearing is December 22”. Yasin Malik, who is serving life imprisonment in Tihar Jail in a terror funding case, is an accused in this case along with others. Yasin Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment twice. The NIA had sought the death penalty for the separatist leader who was convicted on May 19 this year.
A Pakistani intruder was shot dead by the Border Security Force (BSF) along the international border in RS Pura sector in Jammu early on Tuesday morning. “Alert BSF troops neutralised an intruder coming from Pakistan at the international border in RS Pura sector around 2.15am on Tuesday. The intruder crossed over to the India side and started moving towards the fence,” a BSF official said. The BSF troops warned the intruder not to move forward but he did not pay any heed and kept moving towards the fence. The troops later fired and neutralised the intruder and foiled the infiltration attempt, the official added. The area was cordoned off and a search operation is underway. In another incident on Tuesday, BSF troops nabbed an intruder near the international border in Indreshwar Nagar area in Jammu when he came near the fence and tried to cross over. He was later nabbed.

Veteran actor Vikram Gokhale has been admitted to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune over health complications. The television and stage actor is currently undergoing treatment, The doctors, however, refused to reveal any further information and said Gokhale’s family will give an update on his health status. According to a report by the Marathi outlet Navshakti, the veteran actor was brought to the hospital a few days ago and his condition stabilised after the treatment. He was last seen in the Abhimanyu Dassani and Shilpa Shetty-starrer Nikamma, which was released in theatres in June this year. SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Wipro allows over 30,000 employees to unionise in Europe Indian IT giant Wipro has allowed over thirty thousand of its employees working in Europe to unionise, making it the first Indian company to take this step. The IT services giant entered into an agreement with employee representatives to set up European Works Council (EWC). Deepak Parija, Senior Vice President and CHRO of Wipro’s Europe arm said that this was a step towards adopting European employment standards. He said, “EWS demonstrates that Wipro is applying and adopting European employment standards as a responsible global employer.” It is worth noting that the request to allow the formation of a union was made by employees in 2019 and it is a regulatory requirement in Europe for companies to act upon the request within three years from the date of receiving said request. “The EWC will help us in getting even better as we assimilate employee perspectives on a consistent basis,” the CHRO of the Europe arm of Wipro added. The company announced in a statement that the EWC agreement was negotiated with employee representatives from 13 countries including the Netherlands, Germany, France, Sweden, and Finland. The IT/ITeS services company also noted that following the appointment of members of the EWS, as per the local rules, the first constitutional meeting of the union will take place in Q1 FY 2024 where the members would be expected to elect a chairman, and select committee members. The union would also be expected to ensure Wipro employees are informed and consulted by management on the progress of the business and any significant decisions that could affect them. Interestingly, the company has incurred a cost of Rs 136 crore in the July to September quarter of the financial year 2022-23 in restructuring charges to address inefficiencies in Europe. “Setting up the EWC strengthens the already successful cooperation with employee representations in many European countries. Wipro aims to provide the best employee experience and create an inclusive environment that welcomes everyone and nurtures an overall sense of - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara belonging,” Parija added.
