The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday conducted searches at 14 locations in different districts in a case related to terror activities of various proscribed outfits in Jammu and Kashmir, an official said. The raids were conducted in Jammu, Kulgam, Pulwama, Anantnag and Sopore in, a spokesperson said. The agency said the searches were carried out in connection with a case which was suo-moto registered on June 21 by the NIA Police Station in Jammu. “The case pertains to the criminal conspiracy for carrying out terrorist and subversive activities hatched by the cadres and Over Ground Workers of various proscribed organizations and their affiliates/off-shoots, operating under various pseudo names, at the behest of their Pakistani commanders/handlers,” the spokesperson said.

Former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid was released from the Tihar jail here on Friday after he was granted interim bail for a week to attend his sister’s wedding, officials said. According to prison officials, Khalid was released on Friday morning. Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat granted the relief to Khalid, who was arrested in a case related to the February 2020 northeast Delhi riots. Khalid has been granted bail till December 30. The former student leader had moved an application seeking interim bail for two weeks to attend his sister’s wedding. Khalid was booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and provisions of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly being a mastermind of the February 2020 riots, which had left 53 people dead and more than 700 injured.

Teachers’ scam: Calcutta HC orders termination of 53 primary teachers Agency News: Kolkata The Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered the termination of service of 53 primary teachers in different state-run schools in West Bengal on charges of procuring jobs illegally adopting unfair means or against some consideration. Earlier in the year, a bench of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay had ordered the termination of services of 269 primary teachers on the same grounds. However, these teachers approached the Supreme Court claiming that the order was given without hearing them. The apex court then directed the same single-judge bench to hear the arguments of these 269 primary teachers. It also directed these teachers to file affidavits on this count. On Friday, 54 such teachers were supposed to be present before the bench of Justice Gangopadhyay with their respective affidavits, out of whom 53 turned up. After the review of these affidavits, Justice Gangopadhyay ordered

COVID-19: Indian Army issues advisory for its personnel: ‘Wear mask, maintain social distancing’ Agency News: New Delhi The Indian Army issued an advisory on Friday asking its personnel to take protective measures like using face masks, especially in closed and overcrowded spaces, and practising social distancing. The army also emphasized regular hand hygiene including hand washing and the use of hand sanitiser. The advisory comes amid the rise of Covid-19 cases worldwide including China, Japan, South Korea and the United States. A close watch is being kept on the evolving epidemiological situation in the country and Indian Army, the advisory stated. The advisory also suggests that all symptomatic individuals will be tested for Covid-19 and those testing positive will be isolated for seven days. Those having moderate to severe disease will be admitted to the hospital.

India’s track record of handling the coronavirus and vaccination programme was lauded by many foreign governments and international agencies. Truly, the Cowin portal was one of the finest and remarkable technologies that not only provided the pathway for mass vaccination but also kept up today’s early records and made it available to millions with just a few clicks on their computers or mobiles. As for lockdown and containment of Covid-19 was concerned, both the government and the people were on the same page and fought the battle against the pandemic with minimum collateral damage. The loss of lives was an unfortunate reality which none can deny or overlook. Yet, picking up the loose ends and returning to normality in private and institutional lives was quick. Chief Minister Shinde holds the urban development portfolio now also. “Considering the fact that now the order of regularisation has been withdrawn by the Chief Minister as per his order dated 1612-2022, we are of the view that the purpose of the order dated 1412-2022 passed by this court has been served and now this issue is closed,” the HC observed on Thursday. The bench made the observation after it was informed that the chief Minister, by an order of December 16, has withdrawn the order of regularisation.

The Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Second Amendment) Bill, 2022 was passed through a voice vote in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. The bill, which was piloted by the Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Arjun Munda, has already been passed by Lok Sabha on December 15, 2022. The bill follows the suggestion of the Tamil Nadu government that the two communities be included in the list of Scheduled Tribes (ST) in the state. Replying to the debate, Munda said the number of these communities is very less, and faced hardship and were deprived of their rights even after the independence of the country. The government is working
on the tribal-related issues, removing discrepancies, and has ensured to give justice to them, he added. The minister said various members have raised demands to add more communities from their respective areas to the tribal list and the government is sensitive about it. ”The government is trying to solve the issues,” he said, adding the government has taken similar requests for the states of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Karnataka. While participating in the debate, members from different parties sought reservations for tribal communities from their areas. M Thambidurai of the AIADMK supported the bill and said some more communities from Tamil Nadu need to be added to this. He said fishing is also hunting in the sea, so therefore there is a demand from Tamil Nadu to add fishermen into the tribal communities.

Flipkart and PhonePe have completed their separation and both entities will continue to operate under US-based retail giant Walmart, a joint statement said on Friday. PhonePe was acquired by Flipkart Group in 2016. “As part of this transaction, existing Flipkart Singapore and PhonePe Singapore shareholders, led by Walmart, have purchased shares directly in PhonePe India. This completes the move to make PhonePe a fully India domiciled company, a process that started earlier this year,” the statement said.
