Kerala’s Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led government on Sunday decided to hand over a probe of the Team Solar scandal, which almost led to the fall of the Oomen Chandy regime seven years ago, to the CBI just months ahead of assembly elections in the state. The move came after Chandy was made chief of the Congress party’s election management committee for the polls. The

scandal centred around a fictitious solar energy company called Team Solar formed in 2013 by an alleged con woman named Saritha Nair and second husband, Biju Radhakrish-nan, who boasted of their contacts with the chief minister’s office, and cheated people out of money by seeking investments with the promise of making them business partners or offering to install solar power units. Chandy was then the Kerala CM.

Union home minister Amit Shah said on Sunday that the Bodoland Territorial Region Accord, which was inked a year ago, triggered the process of ending insurgency in the Northeast and was able to bring peace to the troubled region in Assam. The Bodo Accord, the third peace deal with Bodo rebel groups, was signed in New Delhi on January 27 last year by the Centre with all four factions of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) and United Bodo Peoples’ Organisation (UBPO).“Peace has returned to Bodo areas due to the accord. Republic Day 2021: Significance and Evolution of Indian National Flag Over the Years Agency News: New Delhi January 26, also known as Republic Day, is one of the most significant days of our country’s history when the Indian constitution came into effect in 1950. The day is celebrated with full fervour and enthusiasm as spectacular parade takes place at Janpath, New Delhi and the national flag is hoisted in various parts of the country. While flag hoisting is an important part of this celebration, do you know that the existing tricolour is not the first flag which was designed as the our national flag.As we

celebrate the 72nd Republic Day this year, let’s go through our national flag’s evolution and significance:The Indian tricolour has undergone a lot of transformation until it was adopted in its existing form on July 22, 1947. The tricoloured Indian National flag was designed by Pingali Venkayya of Macchilipatnam in 1916.1. However, the first time when it was hoisted as our national flag was on August 7, 1906, in the Parsee Bagan Square (Green Park) in Kolkata. This flag had three horizontal stripes of red, yellow and green.2. In the same year, 1906, a new

design of flag was proposed by Cama, Veer Savarkar and Shyamji Krishna Varma which was exhibited at the socialist conference in Berlin. The flag was tri-coloured with saffron at the top and green at the bottom. The top saffron part also had one lotus and seven stars denoting ‘Saptarishi’. The flag also had the words ‘Vande Mataram’ written on it.3. In 1917, a new flag was designed by Annie Besant & Lokmanya Tilak during the Home Rule Movement. The flag had five red and four green horizontal strips arranged alternately with a symbol of Union Jack

present at the top left corner. It also had a white crescent and star opposite to it on the right corner.4. In 1921, the flag was redesigned by Vankayya which had colours red and green to represent the two major religious communities in India. However, Mahatma Gandhi, who was in Vijayawada at that time, advised Pingali to add the white colour to the flag to represent all the other communities of India. He also asked him to add ’Spinning

Wheel’ or the Charkha to the flag. 5. In 1931, Venkayya redesigned the flag and added saffron colour instead of red at the top. The white and green stripes were kept the same with Gandhiji’s Charkha at the centre of the flag. However, in the final flag which was adopted in 1947, the symbol of the Spinning Wheel or Charkha was replaced by Ashoka’s Dharma Charkha as the emblem on the white part of the flag.

India and China on Sunday held yet another round of military talks in their latest attempt to ease tensions in eastern Ladakh, where the two sides have been locked in a lingering border standoff that has hit bilateral ties, at a time when frontline soldiers are deployed eyeball-to-eyeball at friction points on the contested Line of Actual Control (LAC), officials familiar with the development said. The corps commander-level talks between the Indian Army and the Chinese People’s Liberation

Army (PLA) were held at Moldo on the Chinese side of the LAC. The outcome of the ninth round of military dialogue was not known when this report was filed. The situation in the Ladakh sector remains tense and the ongoing military and diplomatic dialogue has not yielded results. “The ground situation remains as it was in August-September (when Indian Army took control of key heights on the southern bank of Pangong Tso). The military dialogue alone is unlikely to yield results. Diplomatic efforts will have to progress simultaneously,” said one of the officials cited above.India has consistently pushed for comprehensive disengagement at all flashpoints and restoration of status quo ante of early April 2020 during the ongoing military talks whereas the Chinese side wants the Indian Army to first pull back troops deployed on strategic heights on the southern bank of Pangong Tso.“Neither side is willing to vacate the positions held by them. It seems unlikely that the standoff will be resolved in the short term. However, talks will go on as it is important not to break communication,” said a second official.Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria on Saturday said that India was ready to match China’s aggression in the eastern Ladakh theatre, where the two countries have been locked in a border row since May 2020. “If they (China) can get aggressive, we will also get aggressive. We have full preparations (to meet any eventuality),” said the IAF chief.Last month, he said the likely reasons for Chinese actions in the Ladakh sector could include.

What Mamata Can Learn From Modi’s Approach During An Ahmedabad Event in 2013 There could not have been a better setting to commemorate Subhas Chandra Bose’s 125th birth anniversary celebrations than Victoria Memorial in Kolkata. However, the otherwise perfect programme was marred by Mamata Banerjee’s anger towards a handful of people who chanted ‘Jai Shri Ram.’ She refused to speak at the programme and ended her “remarks” in less than two minutesThis was vintage Mamata — making many points in her own way. But, not so long ago, in October 2013, then chief minister Narendra Modi found himself in a similar situation in Ahmedabad. How Modi dealt with the situation then and what Mamata did on Saturday are studies in contrasts. On October 29, then prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh was to be in Ahmedabad to inaugurate the Sardar Patel Museum in the city. This programme was being organised by Gujarat Congress stalwart and former Minister Dinsha Patel. It was a programme to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel. The timing of the programme was also impeccable - India was less than a year away from elections and the NDA’s prime ministerial candidate was Modi. That the Congress and its eco-system had no love lost for Modi was well known. Yet, when Singh landed in Ahmedabad, he was received by Modi at the airport. In contrast, Banerjee preferred to send one of her ministers to receive PM Modi. Special occasions do merit special gestures, which indicate that while leaders may have different political parties, they are one on vital national issues. The programme at the museum was largely packed with Congress leaders on the dias and Congress supporters in the audience. From Bharat Solanki to Shankersinh Vaghela, all top Gujarat leaders were present. The crowd was not very hospitable to CM Modi (a handful of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans pale in contrast). But, when CM Modi took the mike, there was not a sign of anger or discomfort. In his remarks, he went on to laud Sardar Patel for his work on women reservation, urban planning and cleanliness during his tenure in the Ahmedabad Municipality. He also highlighted the various awards Gujarat had received from the UPA Government. CM Modi also gave a message that Maoism and terrorism would not succeed in India. He did make a political point- lamenting why Sardar Patel was not India’s first Prime Minister but it was done without bringing anybody else down. Dr Manmohan Singh, on his part also played to the Congress script, highlighting Sardar Patel’s secular credentials, among other things. The target of his remarks was clear and could be debated but one could not fault him for saying it improperly. Mamata Banerjee’s conduct at Victoria Memorial was a study in contrast. Unlike Dr Manmohan Singh in Ahmedabad, PM Modi stayed totally clear from politics in his long speech. The focus of his speech was Netaji Bose, his vision in action today and the greatness of West Bengal. Crossfire between political leaders and cadres is common, as well as healthy, in democracy, provided it is done with decency and respect. The incidents in Ahmedabad in 2013 and Kolkata in 2021 had many similarities- birth anniversary programmes of leading figures of the Indian freedom struggle, the PM and CM of the day belonging to different parties. But to CM Modi’s credit then and PM Modi’s credit now, there was no politics. It did not matter whether the crowd was moderately hostile in Ahmedabad or whether a handful of TMC activists tried to show him black flags while he was enroute to Netaji Bhawan in Kolkata (a handful of people chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ does not even compare to this). Certain occasions require dignified conduct. This is where Mamata Banerjee erred. As the democratically elected chief minister with a big majority, she could have enhanced the prestige of the programme by highlighting her vision but she preferred to take the easier route of saying nothing - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara yet saying everything.

Agency News: New Delhi Eight Chartered Accountants are among 258 persons arrested so far in the nationwide drive against fake GST invoice frauds in last two and a half months since mid-November, 2020. DGGI sources said that the 8th Chartered Accountant was arrested yesterday along with his four business accomplices in Jaipur for operating 25 fake firms to fraudulently avail and pass on ITC through bogus

invoices without actual supplies of goods/services. Sources said that out of the 258 arrested so far, at least two persons have been booked under COFEPOSA (Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act) also. The drive by GST intelligence and CGST authorities is ongoing with more than 2500 case booked against 8000 fake GSTIN entities as of now. Authorities have recovered more than Rs 820 crore from these fraudsters.Sources

said that the chartered accountants’ regulatory body, namely, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) have been informed about these arrests and have been asked to take appropriate actions as per their own rules. CAs arrested in multi-layered fake GST invoice frauds via multiple bogus firms include CA BS Gupta (Jaipur), CA Daulat S Mehta and CA Chandra Prakash Pandey (Mumbai), CA Lalit Prajapati (Ahmedabad), CA S Krishnakumar (Chennai), CA Nitin Jain (Delhi), CA B. Srinvasa Rao (Hyderabad) and CA Ankur Garg (Ludhiana). They all were operating multiple non-existent firms and fake entities to dupe the exchequer

with fraudulent ITC utilisation in connivance with fraudsters and flyby-night operators. DoR sources acknowledged that with complete data sharing among GST, customs and income tax, and apt use of Data Analytics and AI & ML, the GST intelligence authorities have been able to pin-pointedly identify those indulged in tax evasion through various means including fake bills and also those availing these bills through layers of intermediaries. It is through such systemic changes, the department has now been able to take targeted actions against fraudsters and tax evaders. It is with these measures that the DGGI has not only been able to unearth the fake

firms but also the final beneficiaries of ITC frauds, like in the ITC scam in manpower services allegedly by big companies like Swiggy, the food delivery chain and Instakart, a subsidiary of e-com giant Flipkart. It may be noted that this concerted nationwide drive against bogus GST invoice fraud has ensured better GST compliance to identify tax evaders and those availing input tax credits fraudulently, and thus, has resulted in record GST collection to the tune of more than Rs.1.15 lakh crore for December, 2020. Also, this has resulted in an increase in the number of GSTR 3B return filers to more than 87 lakh in the month of December.

England tour of Sri Lanka: Joe Root and Co win 2nd Test, complete series sweep Agency News: New Delhi England completed a 2-0 series victory over Sri Lanka on Monday by winning the second Test by six wickets with a day to spareSet a target of 164, the English lost four wickets for 89 runs but an unbroken 75run stand for the fifth wicket by Jos Buttler (46) and Dom Sibley (56) completed the task. Sibley only managed six runs in three innings but he returned to form with a much needed half-century in the final innings. England were still batting in their first innings when the fourth day began. The tourists managed to add only five more runs to their overnight total as they were bowled out for 344 to

concede a first innings lead of 37 runs.Sri Lanka then produced some sloppy batting with some turn and bounce for the spin bowlers. The hosts lost six wickets quickly in the morning session.England’s spinners

had gone wicketless in the first innings but they came through in the second with Somerset duo Sibley and Jack Leach taking four wickets apiece. Sri Lankans are used to playing on slow bouncy surfaces, but they

failed to handle the pressure. Tail-ender Lasith Embuldeniya, who finished with 10 wickets, came to Sri Lanka’s rescue with the bat by posting a career-best 40 off only 42 deliveries. With things drifting away slightly as Embuldeniya was involved in a 48-run stand with Suranga Lakmal, England captain Joe Root brought himself on. The Yorkshireman polished off the tail by claiming two wickets in two balls. England were positive in the run chase, cashing in when boundaries were on offer and picking up the singles. Sri Lanka had a slight chance when Root was dismissed while trying to play his favorite sweep shot with still 80 runs required for the victory.

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has seen pre-tax profit recover to pre-pandemic levels on the back of continued growth in consumer businesses, Moody’s Investors Service said on Monday. The oil-toretail-to-telecom behemoth on Friday reported a 0.7 per cent Ebitda (earnings before interest, tax and depreciation and amortisation) growth for the quarter ended December 31, 2020, compared with the corresponding quarter in the previous year. “A strong performance in digital services and retail segments underpinned the improvement in consolidated earnings, a credit positive,” Moody’s said commenting on the earnings Continued growth in earnings combined with the company’s strong balance sheet with zero net debt on a reported basis will keep Reliance’s credit metrics strong for its Baa2 rating over the next 12-18 months, it said. Its digital services segment reported a 48.4 per cent Ebitda growth driven by an increase in subscriber additions, higher average revenue per user and growth in the company’s fibreto-the-home (FTTH) business. The company’s retail segment

earning grew by 13 per cent on the back of an increase in the number of retail stores and increased shopper footfalls. Moody’s expected earnings within digital services to continue to grow over the next 12-18 months on the back of further ramp-up of its home and enterprise broadband services. For the retail segment, it expected shopper traffic and sales to grow in subsequent quarters as consumer sentiment improves following the rollout of coronavirus vaccines and the economic recovery starts kicking in.“However, increasing competition and a second wave of the virus are risks to growth within the segment,” it said.Moody’s said weak refining margins continue to weigh on the earnings performance of the oil-to-chemical (O2C) segment, although earnings have started to recover from the lows seen in 2020.The recovery is mainly because of an increase in refinery throughput and sale volumes following a planned shutdown in the previous quarter, and stronger petrochemical spreads “We expect earnings from the O2C segment to grow over the next 12-18 months, driven by continued recovery in refinery throughput.
