Gupta had said that he had appeared 31 times before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for questioning. He thought it would not be proper for him to accept the award. Kunzru was the founder of the Indian School of International Studies – which later morphed into the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) – and the India International Centre. Incidentally, the chairman of the SRC, Justice Fazal Ali was only offered the Padma Vibhushan, which he accepted. Justice Fazal Ali had earlier received the titles of Khan Sahib , Khan Bahadur and the Order of the British Empire (OBE). He was invested with a knighthood on 1 May 1942 by the viceroy, Lord Linlithgow. This was a rare example of a person being honoured by both the Raj and the Swaraj. The Gujarat unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Tuesday withdrew its protest against Shah Rukh Khan-starrer “Pathaan”, a day before its release, expressing satisfaction over the removal of “objectionable” contents from the film. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has revised the “obscene song” and “lewd words” in the film and hence the right-wing groups will no longer protest against its release, the Gujarat VHP’s secretary Ashok Raval said in a statement.
”Pathaan” has been facing backlash for featuring actor Deepika Padukone in a saffron bikini in the song ‘Besharam Rang’. Several leaders, including from the Vishwa
Hindu Parishad, had sought a ban on the film, which is scheduled to release on Wednesday. Raval claimed that in its recent circular, the censor board has made 40 to 45 corrections regarding songs, colour and clothes, which resolve the issues and hence, they no longer need to protest. The VHP leader in a statement said, “Following the Bajrang Dal’s protests against ‘Pathaan’, the Censor Board has revised the obscene song and unsavoury words in the film, which is good news. I congratulate all the activists and the entire Hindu community who fought this successful struggle for the protection of religion and culture.” It is now up to the enlightened citizens to decide whether to watch the film, he said.

The inexorable rise of the Afghanistan men’s cricket team since 2000 has been lauded as a heartwarming story of triumph amid war, occupation, poverty, repression and regime change. However, following the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021 and the subsequent ban on female participation in sport or exercise, as well as the loss of many other basic rights, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is under increasing pressure to suspend Afghanistan from cricketing activity for violating its membership criteria. According to ICC Membership Criteria
2.2 (a)(i) countries must: “Have the appropriate status, structure, recognition, membership and competence to be recognized by the ICC as the primary governing body responsible for the administration, management and development of cricket (men’s and women’s) in its country” — criteria which Afghanistan no longer fulfills.
“Taliban forces have closed training centers and threatened female athletes with violence, athletes have reported,” said Minky Worden, director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch. “As a result, some Afghan women and girl athletes have gone into hiding and sought to destroy evidence.

Two visually-impaired cricket fans, who had come to enjoy the India-New Zealand match in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore on Tuesday, were stopped by the police from entering the stadium, as their aides did not have tickets. The duo, who claimed to be big fans of cricketer Virat Kohli, was later allowed to enter the venue with their assistants on humanitarian grounds.
According to eyewitnesses, Ashish Chauhan and Abhishek Namdev had reached Holkar Stadium with two attendants for the 3rd ODI between India and New Zealand. Chauhan’s
sister said, “My brother had bought a ticket for the match, but I was stopped from accompanying him into the stadium, citing that only one person was allowed entry on a ticket.” The attendants of both the visually-impaired men explained their problems to the top police officers present at the spot, after which all of them were allowed to enter the stadium.
PNB Housing Finance on Tuesday reported 43 per cent jump in net profit at Rs 269 crore driven by a massive growth in the core net interest income in December quarter even though loan growth was muted for the period. The company’s net interest income jumped 67 per cent to Rs 734 crore during the quarter, as it passed on the rising interest rates to its customers even though the mainstay retail loan book inched up only 6.6 per cent to Rs 53,123 crore. Retail book constitutes as much as 92 per cent of this asset,
the company said in a statement. Total loan book increased to Rs 58,034 crore from Rs 57,845 crore in December 2021. Spread on loans stood at 3.83 per cent, up from 3.38 per cent, helping it improve its net interest margin to 4.68 per cent from 4.14 per cent. Total income rose to Rs 1,713.64 crore in the quarter from Rs 1,411.24 crore in the year-ago period. Impairment on financial instruments and write-offs rose to Rs 254.84 crore from Rs 129.48 crore. Overall asset quality improved with gross bad loan ratio coming down to 4.87 per cent from 6.06 per cent and net NPA ratio remaining flat at 3.22 per cent.

The rupee fell 28 paise to close as 81.70 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday as unabated foreign fund outflow hit market sentiments. However, a weak dollar and fall in crude prices capped the losses in the local currency, forex traders said. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened lower at 81.61 to a dollar against the previous close of 81.42. The local unit moved in a range of 81.43 to 81.76 during the day. On Monday, the rupee had declined by 25 paise to close at 81.42 against the US dollar.
Meanwhile, the US dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, declined 0.01 per cent to 102.15 amid concerns over US economic growth. The Brent crude was trading 0.41 per cent lower at USD 87.83 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE Sensex ended almost flat at 60,978.75, up 37.08 points or 0.06 per cent. The broader NSE Nifty inched up 0.25 points to 18,118.30. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital market on Monday as they sold shares worth Rs 219.87 crore, according to exchange data.

The makers of the upcoming thriller ‘Afwaah’, Anubhav Sinha and Sudhir Mishra are all set to release their film on the big screen on February 24th, 2023. Counterfeiting activities are impacting the sustainable growth of the major industry in India, including Pharmaceuticals, FMCG, Automotives, Apparel, Consumer Durables/Electronics, and Agri products, according to a new report released by ASPA & CRISIL. The report is based on an independent survey conducted with consumers and retailers covering twelve Indian cities (Delhi, Agra, Jalandhar, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Indore, Kolkata, Patna, Chennai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad) to gauge their perception of counterfeiting in several key sectors.
Sharing the insight on the report, Mr Nakul Pasricha, President of the Authentication Solution Providers’ Association (ASPA), said, “Illicit goods trade stood at Rs 2.6 trillion in FY 2019-20 in India and affecting almost all sectors. It is on the rise and heavily bleeding the country, industry, and consumers by large.

According to Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd. (MOFSL), top 12 listed realty firms are expected to report 24% volume growth in CY22 vs industry growth of 34%. Higher industry growth compared to listed players is largely attributed to the base effect, as most of the large players have witnessed significantly higher growth in CY21. The listed realty firms are expected to report value growth of 35% in CY22. Most of the listed peers are targeting at least two new markets, apart from its home market, which will lead to a further pickup in their market share.
With a weakening global growth outlook, MOFSL expects global IT and BFSI companies will remain cautious about their expansion plans, and hence office leasing may remain muted for at least next six months. MOFSL expects residential demand to remain unabated despite further rate hike expectations, as the industry continues to witness long-term pent-up demand and as affordability will remain better than the pre-Covid level. MOFSL believe listed real estate players will continue to outperform the industry as they target scale-ups in markets beyond their existing exposure, which will play out in the next couple of years.
