Gujarat polls possible in May-end or June-first week, we have started preparing for it: Gujarat Congress Cheif Agency | New Delhi

The Congress has asked its Gujarat unit to prepare for early assembly elections and finalise the shortlist of candidates for each constituency, amid buzz that the polls may be advanced after BJP’s sweeping victory in UP and Uttarakhand. With factional feuds plaguing the Gujarat Congress, despite being out of power for almost a quarter of a century, the party also decided not to project a chief ministerial candidate. The Congress will also be open to alliance talks with like-minded parties, such as NCP and JDU, to avoid division of nonBJP and anti-incumbency votes. He said, “As the head of state, I am willing to plead with doctors with folded hands to get them back to work. But this will be the last time. After this it will be strict action. A woman techie from Andhra Pradesh and her 7-year-old son were found dead in their home in New Jersey last evening. N Sasikala and the child were strangled, according to her relatives in Vijayawada. Her husband, N Hanumantha Rao, discovered her body when he returned home from work. Hanumantha Rao and Ms Sasikala both were software professionals. She worked from home. in parliament this morning. “This is a serious matter. This very dangerous. Just two weeks back, two Indians were killed and now two more people have been killed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi must take (it) up with the President of America,” said Congress Rajya Sabha member T Subbarami Reddy. Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien asked for Foreign Minis-

Yogi’s rise is a challenge for both BJP and the Congress The BJP’s more hardline supporters are enjoying what they have dubbed a ‘liberal meltdown’ over the choice of Yogi Adityanath as chief minister. Many explanations have been offered for why the party would choose an unapologetic Hindutva face, notorious for his anti-Muslim speeches, to front India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh. We are told that as the most popular among all partymen, the Yogi best captures the mandate. Unlike others who command only certain constituencies of support, Adityanath alone can claim support across the rainbow coalition of castes that catapulted the BJP to victory. That he has political clout as a five-term MP gives him the heft needed to turnaround the dismal law and order situation in UP. And of course every last detail has been reported on how, in the priest-turned-politician’s parliamentary seat of Gorakhpur, local Muslims share a special bond with the Mahant; some work at the temple’s gaushala and others recall past generosities from the contentious leader, underlining the distance between his public avatar and his personal warmth. Perhaps Adityanath is indeed a kindly man in ‘real’ life but as a person in public life, it is his public utterances (and actions) alone that he must be measured against. Calling Kairana in west UP another Kashmir; promoting the politics of love jihad - basically a discouragement of Hindu-Muslim romance, comparing Shah Rukh Khan’s words with that of Hafiz Saeed and warning that if he lost the support of a big majority he would end up wandering the streets like an ‘ordinary Muslim’, asking those who don’t do the surya namaskar to leave India, calling Mother Teresa part of the conspiracy to Christianise India – these are all documented statements of bigotry. But it would do us well to also call out the rabble-rousers of a similar nature from other parties and from other faiths - Abu Azmi, Azam Khan and Imran Masood have all played the politics of hate, using the outrageous as a weapon of political propaganda. When Azam Khan as a senior cabinet minister in the Akhilesh Yadav government mocked Adityanath for being unmarried and asked him to “prove his masculinity” as gawkers around him giggled, it was a truly mindless and distasteful statement. It deserved the same ferocity of protests and media attention that Yogi Adityanath has got for his anti-Muslim diatribes. In some ways, extremists across the trenches are mirror images, feeding off the polarisation that the other spawns. When we say the BJP won UP on the back of Hindu consolidation, we must simultaneously talk of Mayawati’s open exhortation to Muslim voters or taking support from irrelevant clerics like the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid or worse still, from Mafiosi gangsters like Mukhtar Ansari. One of the key reasons for the humongous rise of the BJP is the hollowing out of secularism as a political slogan and the multiple opportunities the opposition has given the BJP to pick on liberal hypocrisy or selectiveness of their attacks.

QUOTE “Modiji asked MPs to work overtime to fulfil expectations of the people and told them to make people aware about various initiatives taken by the Centre OF THE for public welfare,” DAY Phillauri Movie Review: Anushka Sharma Is Wasted In Comedy With No Laughs Ahead of assembly elections in Gujarat this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held a meeting with MPs from his home state and asked them to work overtime as public servants to fulfil people’s expectations, said an MP who was present at the meeting..

Agency | Mumbai First we must clear the air. Based on its trailers, there has been deafening buzz about how much Anshai Lal’s Phillauri has borrowed from Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. Burton’s delightful stop-motion film celebrated love and death in grand style, and while Phillauri does indeed steal its premise - where a nervous groom accidentally weds a ghost - this time, there are no resultant hi-jinks. A film one might imagine as a comedy comes without any laughs whatsoever. More than stolen similarities to the cartoon, much graver is the way the Hindi film differs from the original: it simply isn’t animated enough. On paper, much natural humour can be found in the idea of a manglik boy, forced to marry a tree before marrying his bride (right after, of course, the inevitable Aishwarya Rai joke is made). What does this warding-of-evil process do? Does it eternally alter the groom’s relationship with a certain species of tree? Will a symbolic marriage to, say, a maple tree, mean that pancakes will forever make the heart grow heavy? No such exploration, in directions either metaphysical or wisecracking, is carried out by the makers of Phillauri. They appear, instead, to be content with the fact that there is a ghost, and that she happens to be

from Punjab. Thus we are given an insipid groom, a simpering bride and their apparent romance with absolutely no stakes, while a visiting ghost drones on and on about her own melodramatic romance, haunting us all with her boring storytelling. Suraj Sharma - the boy from Life Of Pi and Umrika - is one of the blandest, least likeable leading men I’ve seen in a while. A beatboxer who can’t even pretend to beatbox, his character Kanan allows wedding jitters to turn him into a slackjawed and insensitive moron, well before his ghostly bride shows up. His betrothed, Anu, played by Mehreen Pirzada, is a sweet enough girl who deserves significantly better, but is willing to settle for this ungracious idiot. Anushka Sharma rounds out the trio by showing up as Shashi, a flashback-loving ghost, a bhoot with a backstory, and while her character should lead to some kind of chaos, things are resolved pretty smoothly and conveniently once she (finally) finishes talking.

Anaarkali Of Aarah Movie Review: Swara Bhaskar Is Vibrant In Disappointingly Tepid Film

Agency | Mumbai A tawdrily attired Anaarkali shimmies into a shop. She asks for a pink lipstick. The shopkeeper fishes out a bunch of colours and offers them to her, all for free. This man, like every other male in the boondocks of Aarah, is a big fan of the street singer-dancer known for her racy, uninhibited numbers. Anaarakali, as the troupe’s compere hollers at the start of every

performance, is “hamari desi tandoor, Angrezi mein oven”. But in the glare of the bright spotlight, life isn’t a joyride for the protagonist of Anaarkali of Aarah, a film with a promising premise that doesn’t unfortunately yield the expected cinematic riches. The girl is scalded by the very heat she generates with her raunchy, raucous songs aimed at crazed, entirely male audiences. One notso-fine day, an untoward incident halts a show. In its aftermath, a slighted VIP hounds the girl out of Aarah. Anaarkali suffers the inevitable fate of a small-town female songstress: she is seen as an easily available woman. She might have the whole of Aarah eating out of her hand, but she inhabits a dodgy universe where fun and fear, patronage and predation.

Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Shahid Kapoor: ‘Padmavati’ proves others rose without nepotism: Sonakshi that we have become soft targets

The acterss will soon be seen playing the central character in ‘Noor’

(H.S.) | Mumbai

Sonakshi Sinha will soon be seen as one of the judges on this reality show Nach Baliye Season 8 and her film, ‘Noor,’ is also set to release soon. Over the years, Sonakshi has proved her acting caliber by doing varied characters be it comic roles, emotional, romantic or even action. Since Sonakshi is also known to put forth her views unhesitatingly, it wouldn’t be too much if we say she is like her father Shatrughan Sinha. The actress spoke about sexual harassment, urging the government, nepotism and her love for dance and more. About her stint at Nach Baliye, Sona said, “I got attracted to this dance show obviously because I too love dancing. I was always looking for something, if not better, as good as Indian Idol, for me to be a part of. No sooner Nach Baliye came to me and I instantly related to it for the dance factor and of course, Madhuriji. Any girl from my generation would look up to her. Good dancers from the field of glitz and glamour today, have to be Deepika Padukone, who is graceful, Alia Bhatt, who is spunky; Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor and Varun Dhawan, all of them are exuberant dancers in their own way.” About the current ugly war of words between Karan Johar.

Agency | New Delhi Actor Shahid Kapoor says he is looking forward to beginning work soon on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Padmavati”, the sets of which were vandalised twice by fringe elements opposing the film’s content. “I am hoping to get back on set. And I am hoping that people will wait to see the movie before judging it as I think a lot of preconceived notions about it are around,” Shahid said here on Friday. His statement came in the wake of the torchi n g of the historical epic drama’s set at Kolhapur in Maharashtra by a group of unidentified attackers. Around 80 to 90 percent of jewellery and costumes for the movie were burnt to ashes in the attack. This was the second attack on Padmavati set, as earlier this year activists of Shri Rajput Karni Sena in Jaipur had vandalised the film’s set and assaulted Bhansali, forcing him to shift his set to Maharashtra. Shahid considers it best to say less about the controversy. “I don’t want to comment too much as one doesn’t want to say anything that will spark any further controversy or create more trouble for the makers as it’s very difficult for the producers and everyone associated with the movie to deal with this situation.”

India Vs Australia: Virat Kohli’s Injury Worries Distract India Ahead Of Must-Win Test Virat Kohli’s injury and conjectures surrounding his possible missing out on the crucial 4th Test against Australia at Dharamsala is the flavor of the day as the two teams are all set to face off one last time in what has been a high-voltage series, both on and off the field. With the possibility of Kohli not being able to play dominating the headlines, India would be an unenviable position of having to go in without their charismatic captain in a match they must win to snatch a series victory that was initially taken for granted. As things stand, India are now facing a must-win situation on an unknown pitch against rivals who historically have been toughest of competitors on the field and bad losers off it. The controversy over the electronic voting machines that started from Lucknow after the BJP’s massive win in Uttar Pradesh and triggered a discussion in Rajya Sabha this week has reached the Supreme Court. On Friday, the top court issued notice to the poll panel on a petition that wanted the machines to be tested by international computer experts. The petition was filed by a lawyer ML Sharma who claimed that the machines used in the recently-concluded elections in five states had been tampered with and should be thoroughly checked. Mr Sharma plea comes weeks after Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati insisted that tampered EVMs and not voters was responsible for the BJP securing 312 seats in the 403-seat Uttar Pradesh assembly. Leaders of other political parties weighed in on the

controversy, beginning with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the Congress and lately, the Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee. Some felt the machines may have been tampered, others such as Banerjee wanted a full-fledged discussion because the machines’ credibility had been called into question. This is not the first time that the voting machines tried by the Election Commission in 1998 in 16 constituencies and rolled out within five years for all elections have been challenged in a judicial forum. But the election panel had managed to convince the courts that

it was impossible to tamper with EVMs, not just because it could not be hooked up to a computer to be reprogrammed but also because it was always kept under the panel’s watchful eyes. But the Election Commission’s ambitious plan to introduce an attachment that would print the name of the party selected by voters to them that the machine had not been tampered with could have to slow down. The poll panel wants to introduce the new system called VVPAT, or Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail, across the country by 2019 but the government.

MSU diary with sadhus as inventors brings disrepute to India: Exstudent, Nobel Laureate Correspondent | Vadodara

Nobel Laureate Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, an alumnus of Vadodara’s Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU), has urged its administration to consider reprinting its diary and planner, which credited sages from ancient India for their “contribution to science” — from “developing nuclear technology” to “discovering rockets and aeroplanes”. According to Ramakrishnan, who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2009, such depictions bring “disre-

pute” to the university and the country. March 9 that the MSU’s annual diary and planner for this year, which was released recently, hailed nine Indian sages for work ranging from “discovering rockets and aeroplanes” to pioneering cosmetic surgery. In an email sent Thursday said. Ramakrishnan wrote: “India has produced many great discoveries in the

past. The most striking example is the invention of zero and the positional number system, which transformed arithmetic and mathematics in general. There were also many great discoveries made in the 20th century by people like (C V) Raman, S N Bose, J C Bose and (Meghnad) Saha. In fact, the Science Museum in London is planning a special exhibition on Indian contributions to science and mathematics in connection with the 70th anniversary of Indian independence.”

The AMC also told the HC in its reply that that mobile ambulance service had been started to resolve issues of health arising due to proximity to the

dump yard. “In response to prayer of the applicant, the respondent corporation has started sending a mobile medical van to this locality on a regular basis, which has the facility to examine the patients by a qualified doctor and this medical team is giving required medicines free of cost to the patients,” the AMC said in its reply. The corporation also said in it reply that it had inquired with the Cat-

tle Nuisance Control Department “about the dog sterilizing method and it is confirmed by them that they never release stray dog in the area”. The PIL which was filed last year claimed that people living in the vicinity had been paying taxes and electricity bills. Among the residents are victims of the Naroda Patiya and Gulberg Society massacres of 2002 who live in a colony called “Citizen Nagar”. The AMC reply filed in the court on Wednesday stated that the dump yard was as old as 1980, while the dwelling units were “constructed or occupied in recent years”.
