The Saurashtra region was lashed by incessant rains following a deep depression over the Arabian Sea which crossed the state’s coast and moved further inside, even as Amreli district administration sought help from NDRF and IAF to rescue people from 12 marooned villages. Two teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and two helicopters of Indian Air Force have been called in to rescue people from the villages where water levels are increasing rapidly, Amreli district collector H R Suthar said. “Some parts of Amreli received very heavy rainfall since early morning, resulting in flood-like sit-
uation in many parts. All the rivers of the district are overflowing, cutting off 12 villages,” Suthar said. “To rescue people and take them to safer places, we have sought help from NDRF and Air Force. We have learnt that two teams of NDRF are on their way. The Air Force has already started their operation through one of their helicopters while another will join in the operation shortly,” he said. At present, local police and fire officials are carrying out rescue work, the collector said. Apart from Amreli, heavy rains lashed many other districts of Saurashtra region on Wednesday, including Rajkot, Gir-Somnath, Bhavnagar, Junagadh

Maharashtra Minister Pankaja Munde under fire over Rs 206 cr ‘chikki’ scam Agency | Mumbai Even as it is yet to overcome trouble over minister Vinod Tawde’s alleged fake degree, another big crisis hit the Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP-Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra on Wednesday after the Opposition alleged a scam by women and child development minister Pankaja Munde. Pankaja, daughter of late Gopinath Munde, is accused by the Congress-led opposition of a Rs 206 crore scam in purchase of food items and other materials for government-run schools for tribal children. As per a report in an English daily, Munde cleared 24 contracts worth Rs 206 crore for purchase of several items such as
chikki, mats, books, dishes and water filters. Allegedly flouting all rules, she cleared the purchase through 24 Government Resolutions (GR) in a single day. Reports said that Maharashtra government rules mandate e-tendering of all purchases over Rs 3 lakhs, but the rule was overlooked in the case. Ms Munde is currently on a trip to the US. The alleged scam came to light after complaints were
raised about the quality of chikki distributed to tribal students. The chikki was allegedly procured from an NGO which was earlier blacklisted by the government. While Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is yet to speak on the matter, the Congress was quick to launch an offensive against the government. The party has approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) seeking a probe in the matter.

Is Greece an offender or a victim?
The Greek debt drama continues with a considerable dose of political rhetoric. Alexis Tsipras, the Greek prime minister who was elected to office in January this year on an anti-austerity plank and a promise to renegotiate the bailout package with lenders, has reported to have accused the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of “criminal responsibility” for the current state of Greece. The country has to pay back €1.5 billion to the IMF by the end of this month, which will not be possible if fresh bailout money is not released. An agreement, which will unlock funds, has not been reached so far because the Greek government is unwilling to raise taxes and cut expenditure, as demanded by its lenders. There have been arguments and counter arguments from both sides. Briefly, the lenders argue that economic reforms and austerity are necessary to bring Greece back on track, while the Greek government’s argument is that it wants to implement reforms but the demanded pace is hurting its economy and its people. “Greece’s creditors insist on even greater austerity for this year and beyond—an approach that would impede recovery, obstruct growth, worsen the debt-deflationary cycle, and, in the end, erode Greeks’ willingness and ability to see through the reform agenda that the country so desperately needs. Our government cannot—and will not—accept a cure that has proven itself over five long years to be worse than the disease,” argued Yanis Varoufakis, the Greek finance minister, in a column on Project Syndicate. Varoufakis is also upset with the way international media is covering the issue and quoted a Financial Times column by Philip Stephens to highlight this. Stephens had noted that the rest of the euro zone is of the view that Greece is unable and unwilling to implement economic reforms. The column further noted, “…The problem is not so much the debt, nor even the pace of deficit reduction, but Syriza’s (the political party that Tsipras represents) refusal to embark on reform of the state. The words most often spoken to describe governance in Greece are clientelism, corruption, rent-seeking, special interests and favouritism. Without radical overhaul of the nation’s political and administrative capacity, no economic programme can work.” These arguments reinforce the general impression that fault lines of the crisis are in Athens. However, the Greek narrative also has intellectual support. “The folly of continuing to pursue this program is particularly acute now, given the 25% decline in GDP (gross domestic product) that Greece has endured since the beginning of the crisis. The troika badly misjudged the macroeconomic effects of the program that they imposed… Greece’s voters were right to demand a change in course, and their government is right to refuse to sign on to a deeply flawed program,” said Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz in his 5 June column on Project Syndicate. So, is Greece a victim of harsh conditions being imposed by the rest of the union and the IMF or an offender for not doing enough? A brief view of history will help.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp first took aim at mobile operators with the launch of voice calling in April, making it available via its Android and iOS apps and subsequently to BlackBerry 10 users. The firm has now made the feature available for users of its Windows Phone app in the latest update. “Call your friends and family using WhatsApp for free, even if they’re in another country,” the updated app description reads. “WhatsApp calls use your phone’s internet connection rather than your cellular plan’s voice minutes.” While voice calling is supported on cellular connections, WhatsApp recommends an unlimited data plan if you can’t stick
to WiFi, and notes that you’ll need to be running Windows Phone version 8 or above to make use of the feature. It also advises users that they cannot access 911 and other emergency service numbers through WhatsApp Calling. The latest version of the app also introduces support for sending audio files, according to the changelog. The Gujarat government has initiated steps to take action against industrial units which had taken the benefit of some government schemes but were not following the rule about a minimum of 85% local employment. Vijay Rupani, state labour and employment department minister, had called a meeting with representatives of 44 large industries located in Saurashtra, Kutch and North Gujarat. These had reportedly failed to recruit 85% of their employees from the local population as required by rules. Interestingly, these 44 defaulting industries include companies like Tata and Adani Group. Rupani said that according to the state government’s policy, industrial units which take benefits under one or other gov-
ernment scheme have to follow 85% local hiring norm. “But many industrial units have not followed this rule. Hence, we called a meeting of the officials concerned and representatives of 44 major industries from Saurashtra, Kutch and North Gujarat and asked them to comply before the end of December,’’ said Rupani. City crime branch sleuths suspect the involvement of one Naresh, a Gandhinagar-based man, in organizing the fake National Investigating Agency (NIA) raid on a city-based businessman, Mukund Patel, and extortion of Rs 60 lakh from him. Sources said that the three men involved in the fake raid — Devilal Vaishnav, a Border Security Force (BSF) personnel on deputation to the NIA, his son Suresh and Shankar Shekhawat — had been arrested but till Tuesday evening, the crime branch officials said they were still searching for the three accused. Ltd to recall its popular instant noodles Ching’s Schezwan from the market after tests showed that it contained taste enhancer mono sodium glutamate in “excessive” amount. Acting on the direction of the Food and Drug Control Administration, the Vadodara municipal commissioner ordered to recall the product from the city stores on Monday. Till Tuesday, over 350 kg of the noodles were recalled from stores. Dr Mukesh Vaidya, Vadodara Municipal Corporation’s additional health officer, said the administration was awaiting the results of the tests on other instant noodle brands too. Several prod-

Raw vegetables and fruits sold by vendors in the market are also in line for tests, as most traders use harmful chemical enhancers for colour, size and textures of the raw vegetables that are toxic. We will conduct a laboratory test to determine the level of toxicity in these products in the next stage of inspections of food,” Vaidya said.
