‘India Exports Software, Pak Exports Terror’ : PM (H.S.) | New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday addressed the public for the first time ever since Uri attacks took place. He started his address in Malayalam and said, “When we think of Kerala, we think of God’s Own Country, it has an impression of purity and holiness.” He is addressing the nation at the

where he will participate in the National Council meet. PM Modi slammed Pakistan for exporting terrorism across the world and said, “While India exports software, Pakistan exports terrorism across the world.” Meanwhile, BJP President Amit Shah has said that the Modi governbackdrop of a three-day ongoing in Kozhikode. ment has successfully BJP conclave which is PM is on a two-day visit, implemented the dreams

No joint military exercise with Pakistan in PoK, Russia clarifies (H.S.) | New Delhi

Shortly after Russian news agency Tass reported that the first-ever joint military exercise between Russia and Pakistan will open at Rattu in Gilgit-Baltistan, the Russian Embassy in Delhi issued a strong denial calling the reports “erroneous” and “mischievous”. In its statement, the Russian Embassy said that “the Russia-Pakistan anti-terror exercise is not being held and will not be held in any point of so-called ‘Azad Kashmir’ (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir) or in any other sensitive or problematic areas like Gilgit and Baltistan. The only venue of the exercise is Cherat.” This is in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 34 miles south-east from Peshawar. Tass also edited its online story to remove the quote it had attribut-

ed to the Russian Southern Military Command’s press service mentioning Pakistan Army’s High Altitude School at Rattu in Gilgit-Baltistan as being a venue for the “opening ceremony drills.” India considers Gilgit-Baltistan to be part of the territories illegally occupied by Pakistan. A unanimous 1994 Parliamentary resolution mentions the illegal occupation of Gilgit-Baltistan, erstwhile Northern Areas, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of these territories during his Independence Day speech at the

Red Fort. According to Tass, around 70 Russian troops arrived at Rawalpindi in Pakistan on an Ilyushin Il-76 military transport plane on Friday to take part in Friendship 2016, a two-week military exercise with Pakistan. Tass quoting the Russian Southern Military Command’s press service also said that “the Russian and Pakistani military servicemen will share their experience and employ teamwork in fighting in mountainous areas, particularly destroying illegal armed groups.”

Gujarat: New govt guidelines regulate spending by district panchayat Correspondent | Rajkot

The Gujarat government has recently issued detailed guidelines for the utilisation of stamp duty and royalty grants by district panchayats, mandating that the money would only be used for certain development projects, and thus effectively taking away “discretionary powers” of members elected to such bodies in allocation of funds. The Panchayat, Rural Housing and Rural Development Department came up with the guidelines on September 15. The guidelines also prohibited “changing the head of these grants and their diversion for any other purpose”. Now, a district panchayat member can-

of Deendayal Upadhyay. Earlier, Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu had addressed a public rally in Calicut where he said that under Congress rule, policy was PM presides Madam decides, but now it is PM pre-

sides and team decides. “For us, nation first, party second and individual last,” added Naidu. As per reports, the Uri attacks issue dominated the first day of BJP conclave. PM Modi will also be speaking with

PM Modi on Pakistan: • Today I am speaking to the people Pakistan directly. • From the leaders who read speeches written by terrorists, the world can expect nothing. But I want to speak to the people of Pakistan directly. • I want to remind Pakistan, before 1947, your ancestors used to consider undivided India their land, worshipped it. And in their memory I want to tell you something. • The people of Pakistan please ask your leaders, you have PoK. You cannot manage it. • Bangladesh used to be yours, you couldn’t manage it. You cannot manage Gilgit, Baltistan, Pakhtun, Balochistan, Sindh...and you are talking about Kashmir. • People of Pakistan must ask their leaders to first give secure lives to their citizens. • People of Pakistan ask your leaders, Both our countries got freedom together. Why does India export software and your country export terrorists? • I want to tell the people of Pakistan to confuse you, your leaders have worked for ages. I am ready to face that challenge. • I want to tell the people, If you have what it takes, lets compete to end poverty in our countries. • Lets see who gets there first. People of Pakistan and India will like this competition. • Youth of Pakistan, come lets fight. Lets see who ends unemployment first - India or Pakistan. • Lets fight against illiteracy. mothers die in both India and Pakistan. Lets see who can save them first. And leaders of Pakistan hear this. The sacrifice of 18 of our soldiers will not go in vain. India has succeeded in isolating you in the world. We will ramp it up and force you live alone in the world. That day is not far when people of Pakistan will get in the fray to fight against their leaders and terrorists. My dear countrymen, the future of our nation is connected to peace and good thoughts. Our country wins when we stand together, say in one voice, have one resolution. Today 1.25 billion Indians are ready to pay any price for our pride and peace. That’s why I see a glorious future for India. My dear countrymen, on Deen Dayal Upadhyay’s birth anniversary we have decided to re-dedicate ourselves to work for the poor. In the 21st century, our goal should be that India should be free from poverty, full of prosperity. India should aim to be- Free from injustice, land of justice, Free from filth, land of cleanliness, free from corruption, land of transparency, free from unemployment, land of employment. India should be- Free from crimes against women, land of dignity for women, free from disappointment, land of hope. On Deen Dayal Upadhyay’s birth anniversary let these be our guiding goals.

not officially suggest any work in his/her constituency and he/she will have to approach the general board for its approval to any such project. In fact, the guidelines effectively abolished the local area development scheme (LAD scheme) as stamp duty and royalty grants make up for more than 90 per cent of funds under the discretion of district panchayats. For example, in

Rajkot, these two grants account for approximately Rs 14.50 crore out of the total fund of Rs 17.50 crore. The balance Rs 3 crore, which come from sources like revenue cess and other grants, is unencumbered, but too small for the LAD scheme. Also, according to government officers, this balance amount is used to pay salary and allowances to some employees.

the nation through his monthly radio broadcase ‘Mann ki Baat’ on Sunday. Earlier in the day, PM Modi met with the Indian Army, Navy and the Air Force Chiefs of Staff at his official residence in New Delhi.

Hours after it issued a notification staying an ordinance allowing 10 per cent quota to the economically weaker sections (EWS), the Gujarat government decided to withdraw it Friday night as an afterthought. The ordinance was put in abeyance even as the Gujarat government had submitted before the Supreme Court, which is hearing the matter, that it was committed to providing quota benefits to the EWS. In the night, however, the General Administration Department, in a release, stated that “after rethinking, the government had decided to cancel the notifica-

tion issued earlier in the day”. The Gujarat High Court early in August had scrapped the Gujarat Unreserved Economically Weaker Sections (Reservation of Seats in Educational Institutions in the State and of Appointments and Posts in Services under the State) Ordinance, 2016. The High Court, however, had kept its order in abeyance

to allow the state government to move the Supreme Court. Later, the apex court extended the HC stay on its order and referred the matter to a five-judge bench. The ordinance was promulgated in May this year to pacify the agitating Patidar community. “Pending further orders, we direct that the admissions made to any educational institution

prior to the pronouncement of the impugned order shall not be disturbed. We make it clear that since the impugned ordinance has been struck down by the High Court, no further action towards implementation of the reservation made under the said ordinance can be taken qua education and service matters,” the government circular had stated, citing the SC order on September 9. The government circular had not only reverted to the orders that existed before the ordinance, but also put in “abeyance” all the eight notifications that were issued later in connection with the 10 per cent EWS quota.

There is also little likelihood of a pressure build-up domestically. As life goes on as normal there is little awareness of what may happen in case of escalation of tension. The media on both sides of the border seems to be telling its own story and reporting imagined gains made internationally. While in India it may seem that Pakistan is about to be condemned internationally as a terrorist state and face sanctions, Pakistan’s rhetoric is regarding how successfully the state is drawing the attention of the international community towards Indian atrocities in Kashmir. Such deliberate reporting and analysis has far-reaching effects as it retards the formation of any strong lobbies inside the country that would advocate peace instead of war. Perhaps, the only increasingly ineffective lobby remains the present civilian government that was never part of aiding or abetting terrorism and remains innocent of doing so. The problem is that the prime minister is too weak to control other institutions of the state that consider the escalation of tension to a point where it raises worries of a limited war escalating to a nuclear war as manna from heaven. This means drawing international attention towards the Kashmir issue and making the international community realise that South Asia may be a more peaceful place once the issue is resolved. While the Pakistani state is in violation of human rights in Balochistan, the understanding is that India’s pleading the case will not matter, as all states violate human rights. However, Kashmir is also a bilateral dispute and conflict around it has a better chance of catching the world’s eye. The generals are not likely to deviate from this standpoint even for the sake of the economy. Islamabad is a comfortably aid-dependent capital. Economic growth is part of the political government’s longer-term wish list, but in the short term, it only hopes to win the 2018 elections. Such an equation means that it is happy to remain aid-dependent and is insulated from the fear of major setback to the economy. The real Sharif, as General Raheel Sharif is referred to by some in Pakistan, is not likely to be deterred by the argument regarding economic pressure or an impending meltdown. Despite such confidence, the military did not leave things to fate and increased the threat level. Apparently, a section of the Peshawar-Islamabad motorway was blocked to practice landing fighter aircraft and troops from Corps I, II and XXXI were ordered to move to the borders. The objective: To stall a possible Indian retaliatory attack targeting territories inside Pakistan. The Pakistan Army takes India’s Cold Start doctrine very seriously and believes that its counterpart may try to strike territories inside Pakistan in response to some terrorist attack. Thus, instead of waiting for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to send a message, it was the army chief, General Raheel Sharif, who promptly announced that: “The armed forces of Pakistan are fully prepared to respond to the entire spectrum of direct and indirect threats.” However, none of this excitement was visible in Islamabad or other cities in Punjab such as Lahore and Muridke that have major centres for the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)/Jamat-ud-Dawa (JuD) network.

Shah Rukh Khan completes Amsterdam schedule for The Ring

(H.S.) | New Delhi Shah Rukh Khan has finished the Amsterdam schedule of the upcoming film The Ring and the superstar has called it “wonderful”. The 50-year-old star tweeted on Friday: “Thank you, Amsterdam, for such a wonderful schedule. Your production does what nobody else can … love Amsterdames”. Shah Rukh also wrote that he will miss the canals of Amster-

dam. It seems SRK was in fun mood as posted a video in which a woman is seen jumping over SRK. Ever since Shah Rukh and Anushka started shooting the film in Amsterdam, the two have been posting pictures on their social media. Meanwhile, Anushka Sharma has got rave reviews for her looks and acting in the trailer of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. The actress will also be seen along with Shah Rukh Khan in Im-

tiaz Ali directorial, The Ring. We have seen how their chemistry has stood out in their earlier films, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Jab Tak hai Jaan. And now that they are teaming up with Imtiaz, aspirations are already soaring. Both Anushka and SRK apparently wrapped the Prague schedule of The Ring recently. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, The Ring also stars actress Anushka Sharma, who made her Bollywood debut opposite Shah Rukh in the 2008 film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. This is their third film together after Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Jab Tak Hai Jaan. The Ring is the first time the Don star is collaborating with Ali for a film. They had recently wrapped up the Prague schedule of the shoot.

guts: Samajwadi Party to Raj Thackeray (H.S.) | Mumbai

As the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) asked actors and artistes from Pakistan to leave India within 48 hours or it would “push them out”, the president of the Maharashtra unit of the Samajwadi Party (SP), Abu Azmi, on Saturday dared MNS chief Raj Thackeray to send his suicide bombers to Lahore and Karachi instead of intimidating people coming to India from Pakistan legally with India visas. “Today, Pakistan is sending suicide squads (fidayeen) to India, if you have the potential and sympathy, then you should also send your suicide bombers to Lahore and Karachi to fight against Pakistan or you should stop intimidating

people who have come to India legally on an India visa. Stop fooling around as it will further dent your votebank,” Azmi challenged Thackeray. “Forget about Pakistan, as you (Raj Thackeray) are a small leader and your reach is limited to Maharashtra only. Today Naxals are attacking policemen in Gadchiroli and Chandrapur, and if you are unable to do anything in Karachi and Lahore, then you send your activists in Maharashtra

to save our security forces, and then I will understand that you are doing something practical,” the Samajwadi Party MLA said. Accusing the MNS of hooliganism and of breaking the law, Azmi said, “It is true that Pakistani people (terrorists) killed 17 (18) jawans, which had lowered our moral and we should take revenge from Pakistan, but it does not mean that you will threaten artistes and players coming from there.”

October has a lot to offer in terms of box office clashes. This year’s two much-awaited movies Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay are both releasing in October on Diwali. On one hand, Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Fawad Khan is high on romance, love and heartbreak. Karan Johar is directing a movie after a long gap. The film is also

getting a lot of attention due to soaring chemistry between Ranbir and Aishwarya. And people can’t stop calling this as Ranbir’s comeback film. Shivaay, in contrast to Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, is an action thriller directed and co-produced by Ajay Devgn. It features Ajay Devgn, Sayyeshaa Saigal, and Erika Kaar in lead roles. Even before release, two films have been dragged into the controversy. It all started with Ajay blaming

Karan to have paid Kamal Rashid Khan (KRK) Rs 25 lakhs to support Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. However, Karan denied comment on the whole issue. Regardless of who says what on Twitter about both the films, the battle will ultimately boil down to screen numbers. And looking at the way PVR cinemas have been promoting Ae Dil Hai Muhskil, KJo seems to have apparently got a prominent multiplex on his side in the battle. Another big release this month is Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya starring Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher. It is a debut for Anil Kapoor’s son and the film’s music is already being much appreciated. Both Fuddu and Ek Tera Sath will release on October 14.

The couple, who is currently in the US to promote Ajay’s directorial Shivaay, have visited New York, Chicago and Dallas. San Francisco will be their last destination where they will be visiting the Facebook office. All this while, Kajol’s fan clubs were actively participating and posting news and photographs on behalf of the actress but now, her fans will be able to get first hand informa-

tion, directly through the actress. Meanwhile, the makers of Shivaay are doing everything possible to create buzz around their film which is set to clash with Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil on Diwali. The film has been producer and directed by Ajay Devgn. And when it is all in the family, Kajol has chosen her husband over close friend KJo, in lending support to

Shivaay. Speaking about the film Kajol said: “I think it’s really amazing to see the kind of response we received for the trailer. Thankfully, we have a very nice product (Shivaay) in front of us.” She was speaking at the screening of Parched on Monday. “I think the film will speak for itself and is going to be better than the trailer”, Kajol added.

It’s not just the hard-hitting story of the movie Pink that has struck a chord with the audience. The film has sparked a tattoo trend in the city. Fashionsitas in the city are queuing up at tattoo salons to get a row of birds tattooed on their collar bone, just like the ones actor Taapsee Pannu is seen rocking in the film. “I’m sure the film has to play a role in popularising the tattoo again, as Bollywood is a big inspiration for fashionistas. I am getting a lot of customers who want dainty bird tattooed on their collar bone.” validates Kachan Mehra,

makeup artist and tattoo expert. Taapsee says she never thought that her tattoo will spark a trend. “The tattoo showed four different stages of a bird when she opens her wings to fly. It was intentional because my character was that of a free spirited girl living life on her own terms. It was a representation of who I am. This tattoo was an easy way to tell the audience what the character is going to be like in the film. I think it has

become popular because people could relate with the character. ” she says. “The bird tattoo symbolises liberation and freedom. It is the perfect pick for independent, modern women in the city,” says tattoo artist Max of Inkinn Tattoo Studio, who is getting requests for similar tattoos. Makeup artist Aashmeen Munjal, who also has a team of tattoo artists says, A lot of my customers, specially college girls, are asking for the same tattoo.

3 / Dt. 25-09-2016, Sunday Gold perks up as global cues stay positive, buying helps

Agency | New Delhi After Friday’s slide, gold regained its form to trade higher by Rs 80 at Rs 31,600 per 10 grams Saturday, taking positive cues from the global market amid buying by jewellers in the domestic spot market. However, silver fell by Rs 300 to Rs 46,500 per kg on reduced off-take by industrial units and coin makers. Bullion traders said a firm trend overseas after the US Fed kept interest rates unchanged boosted demand for the precious metal. That apart, fresh purchases by jewellers at the domestic spot market led to the recovery in gold prices. Globally, gold rose 0.03 per cent to USD 1,337.10 an ounce in New York in Friday’s trade. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity rebounded by Rs 80 each to Rs 31,600 and Rs 31,450 per 10 grams, respectively.

Why a falling Chinese space station is dangerous

www.sunvillasamachar.com This day, that year: When India were crowned inaugural ICC World T20 champions (H.S.) | New Delhi

This day, nine years ago, MS Dhoni-led young India made history as they won the inaugural ICC World T20 held in South Africa. With seniors opting out of the shortest format, Dhoni was given charge of a team with a very fresh look. There was no Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly or Rahul Dravid but there was a captain brimming with self belief. Before the tournament began, very few expected India to go all the way in the tournament, especially after their dismal start to the campaign. Forturnes, however, took a different turn after the Super Over win over Pakistan, Dhoni and his men beat the mighty Aussies, South Africa and also England and booked a place in the final where they again met arch-rivals Pakistan. India had luck on their side and Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes against England, and the belligerent knock

against Australia set the tournament on fire for the Men in Blue. At Johannesburg, the venue for the high-profile final, it was more about nerves and pressure. Two teams with a lot of history were up against each other and Pakistan, after losing the group-stage fixture, had scores to settle. MS Dhoni got the coin toss in his favour, and elected to bat first. In came Gautam Gambhir and the experimental opener Yusuf Pathan. It wasn’t an ideal start for India as they lost Pathan cheaply and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Wickets kept tumbling but Gambhir held one end and scored at

a brisk pace. He got able support from Rohit Sharma from the other end as the right-hander scored a brisk 30. Gambhir was out after scoring a 54-ball 75 in the 18th over but he ensured India batsmen gave their bowlers something to bowl at. 157/5 is what India managed, and Pakistan would have felt confident at the half-way mark. In walked Pakistan openers Mohammad Hafeez and Imran Nazir but like their opposition, they too didn’t get off to a good start. RP Singh drew first blood for India and he took another one to reduce Pakistan to 26/2 in the third over of the innings.

SPORTS ROUNDUP Enjoy the game: MS Dhoni’s advice to his onscreen captain (H.S.) | Mumbai

Ashrut Jain will be seen playing MS Dhoni’s school captain in the upcoming biopic on his life and the cricketer’s advice to the actor was to just enjoy the game. MS Dhoni: The Untold Story stars Sushant Singh Rajput in the titular role while Ashrut plays Shabbir Hussain, who was the school captain of Dhoni. To get into his character, Ashrut met Dhoni and also Hussain, who had made the cricketer open an innings for the first time following which the duo broke many records. “I met our captain ‘Mahi’ on the sets of the film where he told us to ‘enjoy the game’… I also met his coach KR Banerjee, who helped me enhance my footwork tions as I have so many and told me lots of stofond memories about this ries about Dhoni and his ground and of playing initial days. Agency | China The stricken Chinese space station Tiangong (Heavenly Palace)-1, is reportedly falling to Earth from orbit after its power systems failed. From all accounts, it is in an uncontrolled spin and will plunge into Earth’s atmosphere sometime late next year. Since its launch five years ago, the 8.5-ton spacecraft has been orbiting Earth at a height slightly lower than the America’s International Space Station. Although China’s space programme is shrouded in secrecy, it is believed that theTiangong-1was extensively used by the Chinese to study rendezvous and docking technologies, and as a base for their manned Shenzhou 9 and 10 missions to study the effects of living in space. Tiangong-1 was originally planned to be de-orbited in 2013 and replaced by Tiangong-2, a larger space laboratory that would allow two astronauts to orbit Earth for more than a month.

Eat fish, meat, mushrooms when pregnant to save your child from eczema

Agency | London Moms-to-be, take note! Eating foods rich in a type of vitamin B -- such as fish, meat, chicken and mushrooms - during pregnancy may lower the risk of your child developing eczema, a condition that causes the skin to become dry and itchy, a new study has found. The study from the University of Southampton in the UK is the first to link maternal serum levels of nicotinamide, a naturally occurring vitamin, and related metabolites to the risk of atopic eczema in the child. The researchers believe the findings support the concept that eczema partly originates as a baby develops in the womb and could show ways to reduce the risk of the skin condition. “Nicotinamide cream has been used in the treatment of eczema but the link between the mother’s levels of nicotinamide during pregnancy and the offspring’s risk of atopic eczema has not been previously studied,” said Sarah El-Heis, from the University of Southampton. “The findings point to potentially modifiable influences on this common and distressing condition,” said El-Heis.

He used to be the opening batsman for Under 16, Madhya Pradesh before an on-field injury put him out of the game for a long time. Ashrut, who was last seen in the recently released “Sunshine Music Tours and Travels” auditioned for “MS Dhoni: The Untold Story” by doing a net practise session in front of director Neeraj Pandey, and played a soccer game which his team

eventually won. “In our country, two professions are highly cherished, being a cricketer and being an actor. This film is a perfect combination of both of them… Its beyond a dream come true (to be a part of the movie).” He is all praise for his costar Sushant and feels the actor will take home all the awards this year. “Sushant is very disciplined.. he picks up thing really easily. tion from the tail in the three-match series. We saw the same when South Africa were here for the four-match Test series last year. For India, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja made some crucial contributions lower down the order, and those runs made a huge difference in low-scoring affairs, where spin played a bigger role. On Thursday, at the Green Park, India were reduced to 261/6. The hosts didn’t have a long tail as they were playing with an extra

batsman but contribution from the last four wickets was very important after the middle-order collapse. Wriddihiman Saha, fresh from a hundred against West Indies, came out to bat after Rohit Sharma threw away a good start. New Zealand pressed for wickets after taking the new ball when it was due, and Trent Boult did the job for his skipper Kane Williamson. The quick delivered a beautiful in-swinger which went through Saha’s gate and disturbed the woodwork. It was unplayable and demanded watertight defence to avoid the ball making contact with the three stumps on offer. Saha, facing only his second ball, was taken by a surprise as no bowler had come close to doing what Boult did during the delivery. An absolute peach!

In a flip-flop, the Gujarat government today issued a notification keeping in abeyance the 10 per cent quota for Economically Backward Class in the General Category in jobs and educational institutes, but later withdrew it following a backlash. “It is a confusing notification and we have decided to withdraw it,” Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said. The notification issued earlier today said 10 per cent EBC quota has been kept in abeyance. The Supreme Court had referred the issue to a five-judge Constitution bench in its interim order of Sep-

CBI court reserves order on Sadiq Justice isn’t unimportant Jamal’s brother plea for further probe

Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

A special CBI court Friday reserved its verdict on an application moved by Shabbir, brother of Sadiq Jamal Mehtar who was killed in an alleged fake encounter in 2003, seeking further investigation in the case. He has alleged that the CBI was not investigating the role of then politicians and senior police officers responsible for the encounter. Shabbir had moved this application four years ago days after CBI filed its first chargesheet in this case against eight policemen. He contend-

ed that apart from eight policemen, who are low rank officials, there were several others equally responsible for the conspiracy to profile Sadiq as a terrorist, besides the role of officers posted in Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB), Mumbai at that time. The CBI in December 2012 had filed the chargesheet in this case under Section 173 (8) of CrPC to probe the case further. The chargesheet has been silent on various other aspects, including the role of Mumbai-based former journalist Ketan Tirodkar. Tirodkar had filed an affidavit claiming

that Shabbir was handed over to the Gujarat Police allegedly by officials of Mumbai police. Even after four years, the CBI has not filed a supplementary chargesheet. During the arguments, the CBI lawyer told the court that the applicant Shabbir has no locus standi to ask details of the progress in the case as investigation was still on. It was also argued that there was no time limit to conclude the investigation. Sadiq Jamal Mehtar, a resident of Bhavnagar who used to stay in Mumbai, was shot dead by a team of the Gujarat police near Galaxy Cinema in Naroda area of Ahmedabad in January 2003. The police had said that he was a Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist terrorist who was on a mission to kill the then chief minister Narendra Modi, BJP leader L K Advani and Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi.

(H.S.) | Bihar Shaibal Gupta in ‘The unimportance of Shahabuddin,’ (IE, September 21) has argued that irrespective of whether or not Shahabuddin stays behind bars, he (like the Ranveer Sena) has been rendered irrelevant by the energetic, entrepreneurial economic forces and rule of law ushered in by Nitish Kumar. Gupta argues, “In the absence of a capitalist culture,” wealth accumulated by criminals “does not get converted into productive or industrial capital.” It is true that in Nitish Kumar’s Bihar, musclemen of yesteryears are able to channel

their criminally-acquired wealth into “productive or industrial capital” — into lucrative fields like the education mafia, for instance. Gupta expresses surprise that Shahabuddin got political space in the RJD led by Lalu Prasad, a “social justice” icon. The fact is, Lalu Prasad allowed the Ranveer Sena to rampage unchecked for the same reason he co-opted Shahabuddin — they were both used by him against the assertion of the poorest and most oppressed through the CPI(ML), underlining the hollowness of his rhetoric of “social justice.”
