Baba Ramdev, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar humbly decline Padma award New Delhi Yoga guru Baba Ramdev and spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on Saturday declined the Padma Vibushan, India's second highest civilian award, slated to be awarded on the occasion of 66th Republic Day. Instead, both recommended the prestigious award for some other 'great' person. Ramdev said that he is grateful for being chosen for the honour but it should be given to someone else and not to an ascetic, while Sri Sri thanked the Narendra Modi-led NDA

government for considering him for the award. Baba Ramdev, in a letter to the Home Minster Rajnath Singh, humbly refused to accept the Padma award adding that since he is a 'sanyasi' hence should refrain from getting "rewards or

honours". Ramdev further said that this honour should be given to some other personality who is more deserving. "I urge you to give this honour to somebody doing something great. I would be grateful to you," he said.

BJP's Nupur Sharma compares Kejriwal to a monkey

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Arvind Kejriwal's challenger from the New Delhi constituency, Nupur Sharma, on Saturday

lashed out at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief by comparing him to a monkey. "He is hopping from one branch to other, I am sorry, but monkey does that. But I am speaking directly," Nupur told ANI, although clarifying later that she had made a comparison over his jumping around the place. "I am not calling him‌ I am making a comparison between the fact that why are you jumping around the place. Be stable.

You don't have the stability," she added. The former Delhi University's Student Union president questioned Kejriwal's commitment, asking how many elections he will fight in a year. Nupur further said the AAP chief had himself asked to boycott Republic Day celebrations last year. "Last year he himself said boycott 26th January, there couldn't be a bigger anti-nationalist stand."

Congress flays government on suggestion to cut in Food Security Act, dubs it 'anti-poor' have never been clear," the Union Minister told reporters in Haridwar today. He also showered praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his endeavours on the

diplomatic front, and said that in the last six months, the neighbouring country has gotten a "suitable reply" from India for each of its offensives along the borders.

Sources say India is "optimistic" about the possibility of an agreement when the two leaders meet in Delhi on Sunday. The final psh has to be given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Barack Obama, they said. Barring any last minute differences, this could be a key breakthrough, said sources.

An official committee's report recommending a drastic cut in the coverage of the ambitious Food Security Act gave fodder to Congress to attack government as "anti-poor" saying the move would hit hard the common man. Party spokesman Randeep Surjewala alleged the Shanta Kumar Committee's report indicates that government is now proposing to "cruelly deprive 2/3rd Indians of their 'Right to Food' guaranteed to them by the previous Congress government". Congress accused the BJP government of attempting to "kill" the purpose and intent as also "the soul and spirit" of Food Security Act by reducing the number of eligible beneficiaries from 67 per cent to 40 per cent. He said remarks of the Chairman of Committee and senior BJP leader

Shanta Kumar to the effect that Congress had enacted a 'Vote Security Bill' and not a 'Food Security Bill' "is a crude attempt to make a mockery" of crores of toiling poor of India by Bhartiya Janata Party. "This is the worst case of political opportunism and concerted and premeditated deceit of the common man by BJP and Prime Minister," the party said. "What is more shocking is the statement

by Shri Shanta Kumar stating that BJP did not oppose the Food Security Bill of UPA in 2013 as it feared an adverse reaction during the parliamentary polls", Surjewala told reporters. "Such a destructive, deceitful and anti-poor hidden agenda could only be expected of BJP.", he alleged.Noting that the 'Food Security Act' has been implemented only by nine states and two union territories.

Another Ebola battle won On January 18, the World Health Organization and the Malian government declared Mali free of the Ebola virus disease. Mali is the third country after Nigeria and Senegal to become free of the deadly disease. A country should have had no new cases of Ebola for a continuous period of 42 days, which is a cycle of two incubation periods of 21 days, for it to be declared free of the virus. This is a particularly remarkable achievement for Mali, given the fact that it shares a porous, 800-km-long border with Guinea. After all, on December 26, 2013, the first case of Ebola virus that led to the unprecedented crisis in West Africa was found in a remote village in Guinea. Also, Mali became the sixth West African country to record a case of Ebola when a two-year-old girl with symptoms arrived from Guinea in October last year. Even in this moment of victory, Mali has to remember that it has now only won a battle. As long as the war against Ebola remains unfinished in West Africa as a whole, Mali must not lower its guard as new cases can always come up. After all, the country once experienced a similar situation in November 2014 when it came so close to being declared free of the Ebola virus, before a “second wave” of infections delayed such a declaration. The good news is that there has been a “turning point” in the Ebola crisis with the number of new cases reported in the three worst-affected countries — Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea — falling in recent weeks. According to the WHO, as on January 21, 2015 all of 8,683 people have died of Ebola, and the number of cases so far is more than 21,759. In all, if only eight cases and six deaths occurred in Mali, which are fewer than Nigeria with 20 cases and eight deaths, the reason for that is the unprecedented efforts to contain the disease from the very beginning. Starting with tracing every person who had come in contact with the sick girl on her journey from Guinea and, at one point, placing nearly 600 people under daily observation, the government, health workers and citizens acted aggressively to stamp out the disease before it turned into a crisis situation. The massive public awareness campaign, monitoring along the border, a fully geared public health system and precautions taken by people on their own helped Mali to stamp out the virus. Of course, the sombre awareness of the crisis playing out in the three worst-affected countries had a major role to play in this process. India has a lesson to learn from the way Nigeria and Mali have handled the Ebola outbreaks. Though some vital precautionary steps were taken, the small number of centres that are capable of testing for the virus and the lack of quarantine facilities at major airports indicate a low level of preparedness to counter the virus.

NASA releases 100 millionth image of the Sun The National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) has released the 100 millionth image of the Sun captured by its Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which was launched around four years ago. Since its launch on February 11, 2011, the Solar Dynamics Observatory has captured many really impeccable images of the star playing a crucial role in helping scientists determining the effectiveness of studies related to solar system. The SDO has been providing as many as 57,600 images per day, sometime showing how solar storms erupt and sway in the atmosphere. It is Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) collects 8 images of the star, cycling

through 10 different wavelengths every 12 seconds, using four telescopes. Speaking about the instrument in a statement, NASA said, "SDO sends down a whopping 1.5 terabytes of data a day. AIA is responsible for about half of that. Every day it provides 57,600 detailed images of the sun that show the dance of how solar material sways and sometimes erupts in the solar atmosphere, the corona." SDO has been designed to understand influence of the Sun on Earth and near-Earth space by studying solar atmosphere on small scales of space and time as well as in diverse wavelengths at the same time.

Mumbai Sonam Kapoor’s ‘Dolly ki Doli’ opened this week with a great response from the audience. While she was overshadowed by her dishy Pakistani co-star Fawad Khan in her last film ‘Khoobsoorat’, she has certainly redeemed

herself in ‘Dolly ki Doli’ as the feisty runaway bride. The film reportedly managed to rake in 2.55 crore on the first day. Moviegoers were completely smitten by Sonam’s performance, and were also raving about her co-star Pulkit

Samrat, who plays Inspector Robin Singh in the film. Even though the film’s story line has a very predictable flow, Sonam stole the show with her devious act. Take a look at what moviegoers had to say about the film.

The 'Mirziya' rule book After the great success of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Rakeysh Omprakash is coming back with Mirziya, a contemporary love story set in Rajasthan. The director has taken a very different and unique style for shooting his first ever love story. The director has been following shooting in a linear fashion and has set a couple of ground rule for the principle actors. While the director is set to create a mega launch pad the directors wants the actors to maintain decorum while shooting. supposed to consume alcohol on set. No party allowed. Rule no. 3: The actors are supposed to be reach set 2 hours prior for rehearsal. The team has been shooting 14-16 hrs for the past one month. Now with the chilly winter in the region, the team has been shooting in minus degree The director has

Poonam Pandey trends on Twitter ahead ICC World Cup 2015 with Day napping in middle

age boosts memory By the time people reach middle age, more sleep during the day such as an afternoon nap helps the memory and protects against its decline as long as they night-time sleep is not skipped, a study has found.Sound sleep in young and middle-aged people helps memory and learning. "As people grow older, they wake up more at night and have less deep sleep and dream sleep both of which are important for overall brain functioning," said Michael K Scullin, director of Baylor University's sleep neuroscience and cognition laboratory. If a person lives 85 years,

he or she may sleep nearly 250,000 hours - more than 10,000 full days. "People sometimes disparage sleep as 'lost' time. But sleeping well is linked to better mental health, improved cardiovascular health and fewer, less severe disorders and diseases of many kinds," Scullin noted. For the study, researchers' extensive review began with studies as long ago as 1967, including more than approximately 200 studies measuring sleep and mental functioning. Participants aged 18 to 29 were categorised as young; aged 30 to 60 as middle-aged; and older

than 60 as old. Participants were asked how many hours they typically slept, how long it took them to go to sleep, how often they woke up in the middle of the night and how sleepy they felt during the day. The research also correlated results from numerous brain-wave studies and experiments dealing with sleep deprivation, napping and sleep intervention such as sleep medications. The article appeared in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science. "It is the difference between investing up front rather than trying to compensate later," Scullin concluded.

Poonam Pandey is back in limelight once again days before the ICC World Cup 2015 is about to start. Last time she grabbed eye balls was during the ICC World Cup 2011 time when she promised to strip naked if India won the World Cup but nothing happened.

But like the last time, a huge wave is building on micro-blogging site Twitter and ‘This World Cup Poonam PandeyWill’ is trending at No.2 in the country. Pandey is also involving herself into the twitter buzz as she is retweeting frequently some of the interesting

tweets posted by her fans. The things started when Poonam on January 23 tweeted , ” Wow…. Cricket World Cup… Is on its way ;) Gr8!!!”. After that she has been vigrously re-tweeting several tweets and is showing her happiness on the trend.

Divers Recover Four More Police arrest four suspected in Spain Bodies From AirAsia Wreckage SpainIslamist militants Charlie Hebdo earlier this Indonesian divers have recovered four more bodies from the sea floor, as preparations were being made to use flotation devices to bring the fuselage of the crashed AirAsia jet to the surface. A member of the recovery team said the bodies were recovered Saturday on the sea floor near the wreckage, which is sitting at the bottom of the Java Sea about 30 meters below the surface. Strong currents prevented divers from entering the aircraft’s main section until Friday when they recovered six bodies that were still strapped in their

seats. So far, 69 bodies have been recovered from AirAsia Flight 8501, which plunged into the Java Sea with 162 people onboard while en route from Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city, to Singapore. The jet's "black boxes" -

the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder were recovered several days ago. Indonesian Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan said earlier in the week that the plane climbed abnormally fast before stalling and plunging into the sea.

Indian troops clash with Kashmiri Muslims protesting latest caricature of Prophet Muhammad

SRINAGAR India – Government forces in Indian-controlled Kashmir fired warning shots and tear gas Friday to disperse Muslim protesters angry at the publication of a caricature of Prophet Muhammad in the latest issue of French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. Protests broke out in the main city of Srinagar after Friday prayers with worshippers carrying placards reading "Down with Charlie" and chanting slogans against the Indian rule and in favor of Islam. Security fired shots and tear gas in at least at three places, while the protesters hurled rocks at them, police said. Similar protests were also reported in several towns and villages in the disputed Himalayan region. There were no immediate reports of any injuries. Police overnight detained a top pro-independence leader, Mohammed Yasin Malik, who called the strike and protests against the magazine's latest issue, which shows a drawing of a tearful Prophet Muhammad holding a sign "I am Charlie" in French. It was published following a Jan. 7 attack on the magazine's Paris office that killed 12 people. Many Muslims believe their faith forbids depictions of the prophet. The region has witnessed several protests against the latest cartoon, but

Friday's shutdown was the first major reaction in Kashmir since the Paris attacks. "By encouraging and allowing the reproduction of the highly provocative and insulting caricatures of our beloved prophet, the West has contemptuously disregarded sensitivities of the Muslim world," wrote Hassan Zainagairee, a columnist in Greater Kashmir, the region's largest English daily.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan, and both claim it in its entirety since British colonialists left in 1947. Since 1989, several rebel groups have been fighting to win Kashmir's independence or have the Indian-controlled portion merge with Pakistan. More than 68,000 people, mainly civilians, have died in the armed uprising and subsequent Indian military crackdown.

Parrikar keeps mum after controversial 'deep assets' remark

PANAJI Defence minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday refused to comment over Congress's demand to tender a public apology over his statements on some former prime ministers compromising country's "deep assets". Parrikar, who was in Panaji to accompany party's official candidate Siddharth Cuncolienkar to file nominations for the bypoll, ducked questions on the issue and remained tight-lipped.The minister had kicked up a storm with his allegations that some former prime ministers had "compromised" the

country's "deep assets". Congress had demanded that he should give evidence to back his claim or tender a public apology. Parrikar had made these remarks during an event in Mumbai while referring to the coast guard operation involving a boat coming from Pakistan. He had said he did not give details about the incident as the source might be compromised. "After all, you have to build deep assets. Deep assets are created over 20-30 years. Sadly, there were some Prime Ministers who compromised deep assets," he had said.

Police in Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta arrested four men on Saturday suspected of belonging to a militant Islamist network that may have been planning an attack in Spain, the interior ministry said. Saturday suspected of belonging to a militant Islamist network that may have been planning an attack in Spain, the interior ministry said. Spain has stepped up security as well as efforts to prevent the radicalisation of young Muslim citizens following attacks in Paris this month in which Islamist gunmen killed 17 people. Confirming the arrests, Spanish Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz told reporters: “They are two pairs of brothers, highly radicalized and highly trained.” Diaz said there were “many parallels” with the two brothers who attacked the Paris office of the satirical newspaper

month, shooting dead 12 people. He did not elaborate. El Mundo newspaper quoted Diaz as saying the four detained brothers were of Moroccan origin but held Spanish nationality. In searches carried out alongside the arrests, police found combat gear and knives, he added. Earlier, the interior ministry released a short statement saying police were investigating whether the four men had been planning an attack in Spain. Authorities in Ceuta, an autonomous Spanish city bordering Morocco, declined to comment. Sources close to the investigation told El Pais newspaper the probe had started two weeks ago when one of the four posted a video on his Facebook page showing him providing military training and urging others to wage jihad. Spain is among a number of European countries struggling to deter young Muslim citizens from becoming jihadists in Syria or Iraq, fearing they might return to plot attacks on home soil.

Unstable demographics, falling oil and regional tension await Saudi rulers

When the wheels of Saudi Arabian monarchy began turning this week to install a new ruler after the death of King Abdullah, the most significant announcement was not who was the successor, but who was named deputy crown prince. For the first time in the country’s history, a grandson of the nation’s founder has been designated as a possible heir to the throne. The rise of Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, 55, a Westerneducated member of the Royal Family, begins a

significant shift in a country long dominated by unchanging political traditions. “He’s the first one from the second generation to step forward,” said Ali alAhmed, director of the Wa s h i n g t o n - b a s e d Institute for Gulf Affairs. “He was educated in the West, he is pro-Western, he was in Washington in December, and it was very clear he was treated like a royal. The power structure in Saudi Arabia is going to be Mohammed bin Nayef.”

J&K: PDP says talking to BJP, lists conditions for government-formation JAMMU PDP today confirmed that it is holding "track-II" dialogue with BJP for government formation in Jammu and Kashmir as it listed out a number of conditions with an assertion that there will be no "sell out" on "core" issues like time-bound revocation of AFSPA. PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed said if the 'track-II' talks take some direction, the two parties will firm up a Commom Minimum Programme and then hold a structured dialogue. Insisting that he was not "power hungry", the former Chief Minister said he wants to bring the state out of a "quagmire" that it is in. His statement came against the backdrop of a meeting his close aide and

MLA Haseeb Drabu had with Governor N N Vohra last evening to inform him about progress in the government formation efforts. "Track-II dialogue with BJP over the formation of government in Jammu and Kashmir is in progress," Sayeed said while addressing party leaders here. "Once the track two

dialogue gets some direction, a structured dialogue or the 'track-I' dialogue on the formation of a Common Minimum Programme will be initiated," he said. PDP emerged as the single largest party in last month's Assembly elections by bagging 28 seats in the 87-member House while BJP stood second with 25 seats.

Soon, autonomous helicopter drone for Martian exploration Washington: NASA has revealed that it is working on a small helicopter that could fly ahead of future Mars rovers to improve surveillance and navigation abilities on the alien planet. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has proposed the idea of Mars Helicopter, an autonomous drone that could triple the distances that Mars rovers can drive in a Martian day, as the alien surface is uneven, and ridges and valleys make navigating the terrain difficult, the Verge reported. The rover teams could also use images from the helicopter to

select features for further study, giving them a much closer option than the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and its HiRISE camera, which is over 150 miles above the surface. Prototype versions of the Mars Helicopter are being tested now and the idea is proposed as an "add-on" to future rover missions,

so even if it gets approved it won't be flying any time soon. Compared to Earth, Mars has a much thinner atmosphere and much weaker gravity, suggesting that a drone also must be engineered to be rugged enough to withstand Martian conditions while remaining light enough to fly.

Some pictures, and some questions! Ahmedabad Hinduism and India as a society need big-time reform(you may say resurgence or correction or renaissance). Look at the pictures here. This is not some gutter or garbage removal place. This is a religious place. This is what we call ‘pavitra kund’, where people on pilgrimage are supposed to take bath in pure water! Just look at the pictures, what is the condition of this ‘pavitra kund’! This is how we treat our water bodies! This is how we disposes off garbage and discharge drainage! How disgusting to say that this is our religious place, forget public place! This kund is not located at some unimportant place in some corner. It is located in Somnath, which is a pilgrim place of prime importance for Hindus. This kunda is called Prachi kund. There’s a proverb ‘So vaar Kaashi, ek vaar Praachi’. It means you need to go Prachi for once and it is

considered equal to your 100 pilgrim tours to Kashi. It is believed that Dharmaraja had performed Moksha of Kaurava kul and Yadukul in this Prachi kund. Prachi kund is a destination where Saraswati river flows to eastern direction. Locals say, Gandhiji and Kasturba had visited Prachi. After recent report in local newspaper about worst condition of Prachi kund, today around 60 youths and laborers started cleaning task here. Employees of Shri Somnath Trust, sanitation staff, journalist Dipak Joshi, social volunteers from Kodinar etc joined this task. The question is, even after the best attempt of volunteers to clean it, for how long this kunda will remain clean? In this nation, there are thousands of swimming pools, and we can keep them clean and hygienic, then why this kunda which is situated in top pilgrim destination of Hindu faith

Where are our management skills to take care of our pilgrim places which are also tourist places? Why don’t we feel shame when we see this condition of our pilgrim places? Why dirty, filthy places fail to shock us?

AHMEDABAD To fast track issuance of Long Term Visas (LTV) to about 357 families of Pakistani minorities, the special branch of city police and district collector will organize a camp at the Collector's office on January 30. Of the 357 families, which includes Hindus and Sikhs, about 143 families live in Sardarnagar in the city and a separate camp for fast tracking their LTV applications will be held on January 30. Officials of the special branch said first time LTV candidates will have to be present at the collector's

with their documents and guarantors on the days of the camps. Joint commissioner of police, special branch, Vikas Sahay, said Pakistani minorities come to India on a six-month visa and later apply for LTVs. "These applications are sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) through the state home department. However, it was recently learned that these applications remain pending for long periods and add to the misery of these immigrant families," Sahay said. Sources said that JCP Sahay on a recent visit to

Delhi raised the issue of pending LTV and citizenship applications by Pakistani minorities with officials of the MHA. "MHA later decided to conduct camps for such applicants across the country and fast track the processes for LTVcitizenship applications," Sahay said. Sahay added that those Pakistani minorities living in India for seven years are entitled to apply for Indian citizenship. "This camp will also address the issue of citizenship and guide Pakistani minorities on the documents necessary to apply," added Sahay.

Saraswati Puja circular unconstitutional: Experts AHMEDABAD A circular issued by Ahmedabad Municipal School Board asking its schools to organize Saraswati Puja on Saturday has stirred a hornets' nest. The circular covers Urdu schools, most of whose students are from the minority community. Apart from the Congress, civil rights activists and members of the minority community in the city are also opposed to the circular. Earlier, similar circulars were issued in 1996 and 2007 when singing of Vande Matram was made compulsory in all AMC schools. The latest circular was issued on January 19. Municipal school board administrator Lagdhir Desai said Vasant Panchami is an occasion to remember Goddess Saraswati, the deity of

knowledge. "To help students understand the importance of education, schools need to organise Saraswati Puja and make students recite prayers to the goddess at their prayer assembly. It is necessary to make children understand how Vasant Panchami is celebrated in other states too," said Desai. Municipal school board chairman Jagdish Bhavsar conceded that such a circular was indeed issued. "Yes, such a circular was issued as is done every year, and we are not withdrawing it. It clearly says that individual municipal schools, during their assembly session, should explain the importance of Vasant Panchami, which is the festival of Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge. The school is the abode of knowledge in our culture. I have not asked schools

to perform any ritual," said Bhavsar. Eminent lawyer and human rights activist Girish Patel said that, in 1996, he had filed a petition in the Gujarat high court challenging a Gujarat government circular making singing of Vande Matram compulsory in minority schools. "Notices were issued and the government was forced to say it was voluntary and not compulsory. To issue such a religious instruction is in violation of articles 25 and 27 of our Constitution which explains freedom of religion. No government school or governmentaided school can have compulsory religious instruction. This circular is unconstitutional and minorities should treat compliance as voluntary and not compulsory," said Patel.

‘Right liberals’ portion of it! Vadodara There’s this word ‘left wing liberals’ very famous on social media. This word is mostly used by right wing handles on twitter. But here something on ‘Right wing liberals’ who are out in Vadodara with Vadfest festival. Traditionally in Gujarat, meat or non-veg items are not served in any government function or government supported function, but Saurabh Patel’s

Vadfest will host number of cuisine events in which nonveg items will be catered. The event is titled as ‘Royal Cuisine’, and the food items in offering will be Jhingyachi Kadhi, Miri Maas, Mutton Kabarga, Zinga Dum Nisha, Kachche Gosh Ki Dum Biryani, Meth Kokad, Mool Maach, Murgh Pulao, Machchi Dam Pukh, Gosht Ka Halwa, among others(click here for PDF list).

So on one side, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tries to promote vegetarian food even in Lutyen’s Delhi across all government hosted function, and on the other hand the Government of Gujarat in collaboration with private parties will serve non-veg dishes to promote Royal cuisine in Gujarat’s cultural capital Vadodara. But here is the story of ‘Right wing liberals’ who are organizing Vadfest.
