Countering rising pollution, endemic across the country
Pollution levels in Delhi have reached epic proportions, lakes in Bangalore are foaming and catching fire, and garbage is piling along our streets in ever-increasing quantities. All this morbid news comes with a silver lining: A marked increase in civil society’s awareness about local issues, especially in urban areas. NGOs, social enterprises and start-ups have begun to deliver local solutions to local problems. The government of India with its Swachh Bharat mission has also joined in, bringing all its firepower. This infectious enthusiasm, however, faces several pitfalls that we must avoid if we are to achieve even moderate success. The first pitfall is that of scale. Despite having lost some sheen, the idea of one-size-fits-all continues to fester. Not enough attention is paid to the possibility that it may fail if we try to take it out of the environment in which it was born. Also, trained model thinking often ignores corruption and oligopolies that prevent the most optimal solution from being implemented. For example, consider Bangalore and its ever-growing problem of solid waste management. A solution that has been proposed is segregation at source — a model that has worked reasonably well in the West. However, while some people may segregate their waste by choice, a few may only do so when there is punitive action, while others may not do it even if there’s the threat of a hefty fine or a jail term. It’s an open secret that segregation at source is disadvantageous to the garbage mafia in Bangalore (that rakes its dues from the government based on the weight of garbage in trucks) and, therefore, no amount of waste-profiling or optimal disposal route-mapping will complete the loop and result in tangible outcomes. The solution is not to do away with model thinking but instead operate carefully, under the perpetual assumption that scaling will not work unless proven otherwise. A second and related obstacle is the over-dependence of data-driven decision-making. The walk from raw data to report can create an illusion that all has been accounted for, but the data we get is wrought with inconsistencies and potential errors. More importantly, the back story for every data set collection is washed away when combined with data coming from other reports or for the purpose of brevity. For instance, Karnataka achieved the 100 per cent toilets mark in all its schools last year, a feat that was tempered somewhat by the data that said 5,344 were dysfunctional. At around 5 per cent of the total toilets in the state, the figure doesn’t look too bad on paper.

HDFC Bank on Monday reported 20.1 per cent growth in net profit to Rs 3,356.8 crore for the third quarter of the current fiscal on higher interest income. The private sector bank had a net profit of Rs 2,791 crore in the October-December quarter of last fiscal. Its total income rose to Rs 18,282 crore during the December quarter, from Rs 14,931 crore in the year-ago period. Net interest income grew 24 per cent to Rs 7,068.5 crore during the quarter, driven by average assets growth of 28.2 per cent and a net interest margin of 4.3 per cent. The net non-performing assets (NPAs) as a percentage of total loans rose marginally to 0.29 per cent at the end of December, from 0.26 per cent in same period last year. Other income, which includes revenues from fees and commission, foreign exchange and derivatives, grew 13.3 per cent to Rs 2,872 crore. Total deposits as of December, 2015 were over Rs 5.23 lakh crore, an increase of 26.5 per cent over December 2014.

And that land has been identified near Radhanesda village of Vav taluka in the district,” said a government official. “Similarly, for generation of each MW unit of solar power, we require Rs 6 crore. And so, the budget for the project is likely to be at least Rs 4,500 crore,” the
officer added. Sources in the government said that most of the identified land for this solar park is owned by the government. The project is being executed by Gujarat Power Corporation Limited (GPCL), the nodal agency for the development of solar parks in Gujarat, in collaboration with the Union Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE). The solar park is to come up under a Scheme for Development of Solar Parks and Ultra Mega Solar Power Projects of MNRE which was announced by the Central Government in the budget for 2014-15.

Pabiben, who had studied till Class IV only, was honoured with the “quality mark women award” by an Ahmedabad-based trust at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar on Sunday. She was accompanied by her husband and two sons — aged 10 and two-anda-half. She had started her entreprise two years ago and now employs 50 women from her village, and dreams of giving jobs to at least 500 women. “The community leaders had banned the hand embroidery in
our village as girls would get too much involved in it and made it their top priority, which resulted in their marriage getting delayed. Such was the case that women would reach the age of 35 and not get married. So, the hand embroidery was banned,” Pabiben said. However, she persisted with her interest and decided to promote hari jari embroidery and stitch designer bags. Now, according to Pabiben, bags prepared by her unit are not only sold across India, but also shipped to international clients with the help of her website. She was one of the 3,000 artisans from across the world to be invited to the recent Santa Fe Folk Art Festival in the United States. Pabiben, however, said she could not get a visa.
