Dawood Ibrahim gang’s contract killing bid foiled as police nab shooters

A sharp-shooter owing allegiance to the Dawood Ibrahim gang and three others were arrested from city outskirts on Saturday, when they were allegedly on their way to eliminate a Jamnagar based businessman on direction’s of Pakistan based underworld don’s brother Anees, police said. he said. “While searching the bus, four of them were spotted in a suspicious manner and on searching their luggage, a pistol, six live cartridges, two knives and fake number plates having vehicle registration numbers of GJ (Gujarat) and MH (Maharashtra) series were found,” the DCP said. “During the initial interrogation we learnt that Anees Ibrahim had given a contract to kill the businessman to Ramdas for a payment of Rs 10 lakhs,” the DCP said. “Ramdas is a contract killer of the D-Gang and is facing several criminal charges in Maharashtra,” the official said.

Maharashtra civic elections signal a deeper restructuring of political competition
Elections to local bodies have recently drawn attention, be it in Gujarat, Odisha or now Maharashtra. Increasingly, these are seen as more organically connected to state level politics, as in West Bengal or Kerala. This is mainly because of the increasingly competitive nature of the party system at the state level. Local elections are now seen as an indicator of the possible power equations at the state level. As a result, everywhere, the local and the state level is getting mixed up; local issues are getting sidetracked in favour of state level leadership issues and new political configurations are rising on the political horizon. It would be interesting to watch how the BJP that relies so heavily on national level personalised leadership manages to balance the top-down structure and the pressures emerging from the local power structures that it is now cultivating. This week, Maharashtra completed its major round of local elections to most of its district councils (zilla parishads or ZPs) and panchayat samitis (block level bodies) along with 10 key municipal corporations, including the most keenly fought Mumbai city corporation. The BJP has, on the whole, posted a decent performance in continuation of its rise as the largest party in the assembly elections of 2014. This is in contrast to its lacklustre performance in local bodies when it was in power earlier in 1997. In that sense, the victory of the BJP draws attention to the deeper change in the state’s competitive politics. Since the 2014 assembly election, Maharashtra has been witnessing an odd situation. The Congress and the NCP were wiped out in that election. The Shiv Sena, ally of the BJP for over a quarter century, snapped the coalition and contested assembly elections independently. It emerged as the main opposition party but under pressure to grab power, entered into an alliance with the BJP to form the government. The alliance has been quite acerbic for the past two years and became even more acrimonious during this round of local elections on the question of Mumbai. The Shiv Sena has been keen to keep control of the city’s treasury in its hands and refused to share power with the BJP. Mumbai thus became the centre of the deeply troublesome ties between the two parties, so much so that the coalition government appeared on the brink of a break. There are, of course, limits to the brinkmanship. For the Shiv Sena, the role of an opposition is not very alluring because sections of the party appear keen on enjoying governmental power rather than work for the party’s expansion the hard way. The state BJP might like to dump the Shiv Sena, but in view of the possible utility of the party in a post-2019 scenario, the Sena may be crucial for the BJP’s central leadership and therefore, the uncomfortable coalition could trudge along.

There are different housing needs in India - from the lower, middle and the upper middle classes. “When we talk about affordable housing for all, we talk about all,” Venkaiah Naidu, Union Minister of Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation said. In an exclusive conversation with Magicbricks editorial head, E Jayashree Kurup, Naidu said the primary responsibility to provide housing lies with the Central and state governments. He believes that with so many reformatory steps taken by the government, the sector will soon pick up pace. “Providing infrastructure status (affordable housing) will bring more money from banks to the market and will focus on creating more housing stock for the needy.” Moreover, the Prime Minister has announced interest rate subvention schemes of 4 and 3% respectively, for housing of Rs 9-12 lakh and Rs 12-18 lakh. The budget announcement that instead of built-up area of 30 and 60 sq meter, the carpet area will be considered, will help create bigger houses for all, including the middle classes, he said. The Centre is facilitating creation of funds for urban local bodies to build better infrastructure and make cities more liveable. Adequacy of infrastructure is important. Comprehensive planning is underway for cities such as Bengaluru, Pune and Noida.

Just days ahead of the announcement of assembly poll results on March 11, the Harish Rawat government in Uttarakhand has landed itself in yet another controversy. According to a Times of India report, an RTI reply sought by an activist who is also a BJP member has said that the Uttarakhand government had paid Indian cricket captain Virat kohli a sum of Rs 47.19 lakh in June 2015 from funds allocated for victims of the deadly 2013 Kedarnath floods for appearing in a 60-second tourism video. At that time, Kohli was roped in as the brand ambassador for the state of Uttarakhand. However, Bunty Sajdeh, Kohli’s agent and founder & CEO, Cornerstone Sport and Entertainment, claimed that “there has been no monetary transaction whatsoever”. On
