The income of the state government from Value Added Tax (VAT)/Sales tax has been on a steady rise since the last three years, however, the dues worth a phenomenal Rs 17,600 crore is yet to be collected by the state, the Gujarat Assembly was informed on

Wednesday. The state government collected VAT/ sales tax dues worth over Rs 41,800 crore in 2012-13. This income increased to Rs 44,200 crore in 2013-14 and in the current fiscal it stands at over Rs 31,100 crore. (till December 2014), the state government stated in a written reply to an

2002 Gujarat riots: Victims seek transfer of case to another court Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

As many as 84 survivors of the 2002 Naroda Patiya riot case, where 97 people of the minority community were killed, wrote a letter to the acting chief justice of the Gujarat High Court on Wednesday seeking transfer of their case to another court. At present, appeals of the convicts in Naroda Patiya riot case is being heard by the high court division bench of Justice Ravi Tripathi and Justice R D Kothari. However, riot victims have written in to the Acting Chief Justice V M Sahai expressing their apprehensions. "It is our most earnest request to the acting chief justice to transfer the above cases (appeals of the convicts in Naroda Patiya riot case) to some other division bench

because we have reasons to believe that the division bench headed by justice Ravi Tripathi has made up its mind to allow the appeals and acquit the offenders," the letter reads. The letter is written by survivor and witness in the case Rahemeutulla Sheikh and 83 others who have signed it. The riot victims have also questioned the recent judgement by the same bench, which had granted bail to one of the convicts Kirpalsingh Chhabra on February 26. The division bench had then suspended

the sentence of Chhabra, who was personal assistant of another convict and former state minister Maya Kodnani, till his appeal against the trial court order is pending before the high court. The survivors also questioned the verdict of division bench, which had put doubts on the trial court's judgement of convicting

Chhabra and 30 others. A Special trial court had, in August, 2012, convicted 31 persons and awarded life term to 30 including Kodnani for killings and criminal conspiracy, while it had also awarded 'imprisonment till death' to right-wing group 'Vishwa Hindu Parishad' (VHP) leader Babu Bajrangi.

World Cup semifinal: Four things to look out for in the Australia-India clash Agency : Sydney Australia and India have won six of the last eight Cricket World Cup titles and have developed a heated rivalry over the last decade. When the teams meet in the World Cup semifinal on Thursday at the Sydney Cricket Ground, there's bound to be some friction. Both captains have attacking mindsets in the 50over format, and the top order of both batting lineups are stacked with free-hitting players, so there's also bound to be some entertaining and enterprising cricket. The winner will advance to Sunday's final against New Zealand at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Not a universally recognized term but widely known in cricket circles as a tactic used to distract an opposition player with

banter or insulting comments, be it subtle, implied or obvious. Australian teams are good at it. Recent series between Australia and England, and Australia and India have featured heated verbal exchanges, and players from those teams have been fined and sanctioned. Australian opener David Warner is reported to be on his last warning before some kind of ban is imposed, and allrounder Shane Watson conceded Wednesday that he can't be far off after being

fined for his part in an angry episode in the quarterfinal win over Pakistan. Neither player wants to risk being suspended for the final, but there are others - paceman Mitchell Johnson jokingly volunteered - to take up the banter in the semifinal against India."I don't want to get fined again or get suspended so I know I'm going to have to be even more diligent with what I say, when I say it and how I say it," Watson said. "Based on my last fine, I am just about on my last warning.

Declaration with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif with both sides pledging to push for peace and security. The Bharat Ratna announced earlier for noted educationist and freedom fighter Madan Mohan Malviya will be given posthumously to his family members on March 30 at Rashtrapati Bhavan. An educationist with a vision, Malviya was behind the establishment of the Banaras Hindu University. Malviya is also remembered for his stellar role in the Independence movement.

The recommendation for the Bharat Ratna is made by the Prime Minister to the President. In 2013, when the UPA government had announced the Bharat Ratna for former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and scientist CNR Rao, the BJP had criticized the Congress for ignoring Mr Vajpayee's contribution to the nation. Since its inception, 43 people including former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bhadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi have received the prestigious award.

Made by three Ahmedabad filmmakers, a documentary on the story of two-time gold medal winner at Deaflympics, Virender Singh popularly known as ‘Goonga Pehelwan’ (mute wrestler) bagged an award for the ‘Best Debut Film of a Director’ in non feature film category for the year 2014 at the 62nd National Film Awards which were declared on Tuesday. The

documentary ‘Goonga Pehelwan’ follows India’s most successful deaf-mute Delhi-based athlete Virender Singh on his quest

to reach the Rio Olympics 2016 and become only the second deaf wrestler in the history of the Olympics to do so. Singh has won the

first and only gold medal at the 2005 Deaflympics in Melbourne, in 74-84kg freestyle wrestling, a silver medal at the second World Deaf Wrestling Championships in 2008 in Yerevan, Armenia, and a bronze at the 2009 Deaflympics in Taipei, Taiwan and a bronze at the 2012 World Deaf Wrestling Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. While ‘Goonga Pehelwan’ was the first feature length film (documentary) made by its directors Mit Jani, Prateek Gupta and Vivek Chaudhary who met while pursuing their UG in city-based HL Institute of Commerce (HLIC) in Ahmedabad. Spectrum auction concludes, govt garners over Rs 1 lk cr The telecom spectrum auction finally concluded Wednesday after 19 days and 115 rounds. The government has garnered over Rs 1 lakh crore at the close of bidding, however 11 percent airwaves stayed unsold. According to sources, the spectrum auction payout by various companies stand at -- Vodafone likely to be at Rs 34,500 crore, Bharti Airtel at around Rs 27,500 crore, Idea (Rs 28,000 crore), Reliance Jio (Rs 11,000 crore) and Reliance Communications (Rs 2,300 crore). Terming the auction outcome as satisfactory with the companies showing faith in the government, sources said now spectrum sharing and trading guidelines are being worked upon. The telecom companies have 10 days to make earnest money deposit. The government will disclose names of provisional winners post Supreme Court hearing. GV Giri of IIFL expects the mainstream telecommunications company (telcos) to largely retain at least the minimum spectrum in their renewal circles. “I expect based on the information disclosed in the last three weeks by department of telecommunications (DoT) that Bharti would have increased their spectrum holdings in a few circles and I would expect that Idea has at least managed to get the minimum of 5 Mhz assured for itself,” he said. Giri said that the auction has come at a steep price and therefore smaller companies will be burdened. “There could also be a few cases of companies losing out on their 900 Mhz because there was not enough of it or the price was too steep or the bidding was just too competitive,” he said. He believes the market might start paying a lot more attention to 900 Mhz 3G as a differentiator between operators as “sooner or later the operators who have paid big money for the spectrum will start putting it to use in the best possible way which is to use it for data”. “Overall if after the Supreme Court hears this case starting tomorrow, the judgement concludes with the auction considered valid and if the results seem to say that our current guesses and estimates are byand-large accurate then the market will react very positively,” he added. Sanjay Kapoor, Chairman, Micromax, feels that every operator now will breathe a sigh of relief as the auction is finally over. The strategy now going forward is what everybody curiosity will be around. “Absolutely people have probably retained the spectrum that they wanted to and some have enhanced the spectrum pool as they wanted to stay ahead in the game on data. Now how much a price rise will be required to make up for this deficit or investment that everybody has made needs to be seen,” he said. Companies with smaller balance sheets that have put in lot of money will face the challenge that will come across in their strategy, said Kapoor. “Idea has always grown incrementally over the past so many years. There would be 5-6 operator markets so we would see that some of the middle players or some of these smaller players would consolidate. Now whether they consolidate among themselves or they consolidate with the larger player is yet to be seen,” he said.

Agency : New Delhi Google’s digital payment efforts have taken a new turn as reports reveal the company is working on a new way to make use of email. According to a document seen by Re/code, Google is in the process of facilitating consumer access to their bills through their email, rather than through the traditional mailbox. Re/code reports that the new tool is tentatively being called “Pony Express” and will not only allow Gmail users to access their bills, but to pay them as well directly through the platform, instead of having to go directly to the company website to pay. The document suggests that “Pony Express” is slated for a fourth quarter debut, though reports note that “Pony

Express” may just be a code name for the product. On the other hand, the company’s Google Wallet product continues its effort to grab market space, and Google revealed just days ago that the mobile payment service is now integrating into ridesharing application Lyft. But while the service struggles to compete with the likes of Apple Pay, reports have emerged that Google is working on an entirely separate mobile payments API that could be unveiled as soon as this May. The API, reports said last month, would operate as Android Pay and allow for single-tap payments at retail stores. An unnamed source told reporters, however, that Android Pay would not be a replacement for Google Wallet.

Already, the US FDA had issued import alert to the company's active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) production unit at Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh in January this year for noncompliance of prescribed manufacturing norms. In Form 483, US FDA inspectors raise concerns related to compliance of good manufacturing practise norms. Moreover, the company said it had voluntarily decided to suspend API shipments from Ratlam manufacturing unit for the US market till the US FDA inspection observations issue is resolved.

Agency : New Delhi Virender Sehwag’s entertaining 39 and Vaibhav Rawal’s whirlwind 31 helped Delhi outplay Punjab by six wickets to register their second consecutive win in the North Zone leg of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 Trophy on Wednesday. Chasing 160 for a win at the Feroz Shah Kotla, the Delhi batsmen put up a concerted effort to achieve the target with three balls to spare. Sehwag was the top-scorer with his 35ball knock, including 3 fours and 3 sixes, but was finally done in by opposition

skipper Harbhajan Singh (1-25). Opener Unmukt Chand contributed with a 17-ball 20 as captain Gautam Gambhir (4) once again failed to get going. Sehwag and Nitish Rana (35) then stitched a 42-run third wicket partnership to get behind the chase. But after the two batsmen departed, Delhi were in some trouble before an unbeaten 48-run fifth wicket stand between Milind Kumar (21 not out) and Rawal (31 not out, 13 balls, 2x4s, 2x6s) gave the team another four points. Punjab pace spearhead Brainder

Sran, who accounted for Chand and Gambhir, bagged two wickets but could not help Punjab continue their winning run after they had beaten Haryana in their first game. Earlier, Punjab rode on Gurkeerat Singh’s 35-ball 42 and Gurinder Singh’s unbeaten 34 to post 159 for seven. Yuvraj Singh also contributed with 25 runs before falling to mediumpacer Pranshu Vijayran, who bagged three wickets. New-ball bowler Vikas Tokas and left-arm spinner Manan Sharma bagged two wickets each.

India hockey team to field full strength team for Azlan Shah Cup

Agency : Melbourne Like a racehorse trained to peak for the big race after months of preparation, India's cricketers are confident they have timed their run to perfection at the World Cup. The Indians have already spent four months in Australia with nothing to show for their efforts. Beaten by Australia in the Border-Gavaskar test series, then by Australia and England in the Tri-Series, India's hopes of winning the World Cup seemed slim when the tournament started more than a month ago. However, after seven straight wins, India are starting to resemble the team that won the sport's greatest spectacle four years ago and on Thursday they will play

Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground for the right to join New Zealand in the final. "Our mission is to win the World Cup," said batsman Rohit Sharma. "So when we finished the TriSeries, I know it was two and a half months then, none of the guys thought about going back. "We were right there and we just wanted to feel history. Yeah, it's been tough, but ... we have to make the last four months we spent here work by staying in the semi-finals and finals." After struggling in their leadup games, India have bowled out their opposition in each of their seven World Cup matches, as well as piling on the runs with the bat. "We're playing some

different cricket now," said Rohit. "So what happened (before) we never wanted to carry into the World Cup. We always spoke about this. We know how important the World Cup is and to come out and play some good cricket." Rohit was dropped from India's squad for the 2011 World Cup but has been making up for lost time after being promoted to open the batting. He holds the world record for the highest score in a One Day International (264) and like his team mates, he has found form at just the right time. Last week he was named man of the match after scoring his first World Cup century in the quarter-finals against Bangladesh.

Chinglensana Singh and forwards Satbir Singh and Mandeep Singh have been drafted into the side. While Sardar will captain the side, goalkeeper PR Sreejesh will continue to be his deputy. Besides two goalkeepers - Sreejesh and Harjot Singh --, the squad will have five defenders in Gurbaj Singh, Rupinder Pal Singh, Birendra Lakra, Kothajit Singh and VR Raghunath. Agency : Auckland Whatever the South African squad and their supporters did in the hours after their horror-movie defeat in the semi-final, and it may well have included some of the above things, did not blot out the sun. It rose, as Russell Domingo said it would, golden and glaring and forced them to face the next day. The future. It is too soon to tell how many changes it will hold, it is not too early to know there will be some. "Life goes on," AB de Villiers said more than once at his post-match press conference. Those three words are supposed to offer comfort in times of chaos, but the tone with which de Villiers delivered them served as a clue for what may come. De Villiers is 31 and carries a chronic back problem. It does not take a crystal ball to know this was probably his last chance to win a World Cup. At the moment, the

moon probably seems closer to him than 2019 and a more attractive destination. Morne Morkel would say the same. Morkel pragmatically spoke of this as his final 50-over tournament before it started, with the knowledge his body may not be able to get him to another. Others in that age group will have a similar hindrance, now made worse by a broken heart. Hashim Amla, Faf du Plessis, JP Duminy, Farhaan Behardien, Vernon Philander and Imran Tahir are all in that bracket. Some of them may see the next World Cup, but all of them as a group will not. That may explain why they were so distraught on Tuesday night and why Dale Steyn seemed even more severely so. That's what Steyn said mid-tournament, when questions were being asked about whether he was off his best. He wanted to be South Africa's hero, he vowed that

he would be, but circumstances conspired against him. He began the tournament with flu that kept him out of some of the early training sessions and almost ended it with a hamstring tweak in the last over of the semi-final. To see South Africa's most revered quick since Allan Donald floored off his feet like that was eerily reminiscent of how Donald's playing days ended. At a World Cup. Physically injured. Mentally broken. That might mean the core of the South African team may be dismantled as they sort through the scar tissue of this World Cup. What do the likes of de Villiers and Steyn have left to play for in this format? The harsh reality is: nothing. ,Instead, they may see it as their responsibility to usher in the next generation while minimising the excess baggage and there will lie South Africa's biggest challenge.

A Gandhinagar court today rejected the temporary bail application of Asaram Bapu, the accused in an alleged rape case, who had sought a 30-day release to perform the last rites of his nephew. Additional District Judge R A Ghoghari of Gandhinagar court delivered the verdict. Asaram wanted to be released for a period of 30 days to perform the last rites of his sister’s son Shankar Pagrani (68) who died on March 19. His body has been kept in a cold storage in a city civil hospital. During the hearing of the plea, Public Prosecutor R C Kodekar had opposed his plea and

brothers of the late nephew could perform his last rituals. Kodekar also had contended that Asaram’s release could create a law and order problem. However, Asaram’s lawyer B M Gupta told the court that his client should be released on temporary bail for 30 days since Pagrani had expressed his last wish that his last rituals must be performed by his maternal uncle Asaram because his parents died long ago. The elder sister, in her complaint against Asaram, had accused him of repeated sexual assaults between 2001 and 2006 during the time she was living at his ashram on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.

The regional meeting is co-organized by the National Dairy Development Board of India, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Animal Production and Health Commission for Asia and the Pacific (APHCA) & the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock. More than 60 delegates representing a broad range of stakeholders including

After failing to get Presidential assent for its anti-terror bill thrice, Gujarat government has decided to introduce Gujarat Control of Organised Crime (GUJCOC) Bill in a new form in the Assembly but it will retain some of the controversial provisions. The GUJCOC bill, which is on the lines of the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), was rejected in 2004 and 2008 by the then President AJPAbdul Kalam and Pratibha Patil respectively who had suggested some amendments in the

provisions related to telephone interception and confession made before police officer being considered as evidence in court. After its passage for the third time in the state assembly, the bill is still pending for clearance from the President. The state government has once again prepared a new draft of the bill and rechristened it Gujarat Control of Terrorism and Organised Crime (GCTOC) Bill-2015. It has been submitted in the Assembly and will be tabled for discussion and approval of the House on March 31. One such contentious provision is the admissibility of evidence collected

through intercepted calls of the accused. This provision empowers the police to intercept calls and admit it as evidence in the court. Justifying the provision, the ‘Statement of Objects and Reasons’ in the bill states that it is necessary in the contemporary day where organised criminal syndicates make extensive use of wire and oral communication. It says that the interception of such communication to obtain evidence is inevitable and an indispensable aid for the law enforcement. The statement provides a detailed justification on the issue by adding that the existing laws are inadequate to curb the menace of organised crimes.

committed service and innovative support to small dairy farmers in India. NDDB believes that dairy development is not about the commodity called milk, but about the social and economic transformation of rural households in India. According to recent OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook, demand for milk and milk products in the region will reach almost 320 million tonnes by the year 2021, which means the region will need to increase milk availability by another 50 million tonnes within this decade.Chairman NDDB feels that considering economic growth, change in dietary habits and urbanisation in the Asia the demand estimate could be re-visited.

Board exams: Cameras bust 620 cheats Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

The Bill will be tabled for discussion and approval of the house on March 31, the last day of ongoing Budget session. It further says, “It is therefore, considered necessary to enact a special law with stringent provisions, including the power to intercept wire, electronic or oral communication.” As per the clause-14 of the bill, evidence collected through ‘interception of wire, electronic or oral communication.

With the examinations for class X and XII general stream and those for semester-4 of class XII science stream concluding, a record number of copying cases — around 620 — have been reported. That's a historic figure in the board's annals. However, board officials are yet to scan through the feeds of each and every school. The process has begun and the officials expect that the number will grow. The officials said that they were surprised by the numbers particularly because copycat-ensnaring flying

squads dispatched to various exam centres had been reduced to just 67 from 400-odd in the past. The officials said that this time a control room was set up to catch copycats; the control room received live feeds from every exam centre. The cameras at least made the invigilators more vigilant. The officials said that around 50 cases of copying were registered after they were pointed out by the control room. Officials said they were encouraged by the fact that around 90 cases of the 620-odd were registered by invigilators.
