In upcoming Gujarat elections, Hindutva is the central theme

Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani flags off the traditional march on the occasion of ‘Shahid Divas’ in Ahmedabad on Saturday Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

The BJP’s choice of hardliner Hindu leader Yogi Adityanath as UP chief minister may have raised eyebrows, but Hindutva already seems to have become the central theme of the upcoming elections in Gujarat. Virat Hindu Sammelan to be held in Ahmedabad on Sunday and promise of a stricter cow protection law are indications that the BJP looks to revive Hindutva to retain its hold in Gujarat. But it’s not just the BJP. The Congress may also take the Hindutva path after its debacle in the recently-concluded state elections. In the first polls since Narendra Modi moved to Delhi as

PM, the saffron party is building up its campaign in his home state on religious lines while keeping on the sidelines the agenda of development – a cornerstone for Modi to leap to New Delhi. Amid speculations of early polls, the Virat Hindu Mahasammelan by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad themed around building Ram Temple in Ayodhya and Love Jihad is being

seen as resurrection of the hardliner wing of the RSS in Gujarat. “With more than 50,000 volunteers and saints, the sammelan is the biggest one by the VHP in recent times,” said state VHP leader Ranchod Bharwad. Another leader Chaman Sindhav said, “Preparations for the convention started much before the UP win, but the UP results has definitely infused more enthusiasm.

He has alleged the SCA was not distributing funds received from the BCCI to district associations, which don’t have right to raise voice against “illegality and malfunctioning done by the officer bearers of the SCA”. The petition also accused Nirajan Shah of nepotism in the association. Shah left the association in the wake of the Lodha Commission’s recommendation earlier this year.

Hard nationalism divides, rather than unites in the world In America, Donald Trump continues to ignore well established conventions in international relations in pursuit of his hard nationalism. Recently he refused to shake hands with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel because he disapproved of her soft line on refugees. In Britain, Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday will be triggering the start of negotiations for a hard Brexit from the European Union. Only from Holland has there been a crumb of comfort for those who fear that hard nationalism is dangerous divisive, and exclusive. At least the Dutch hardline nationalist Gert Wilders disappointed his supporters in Holland’s election. These hardline positions are being taken under the influence of the hardline nationalism sweeping the world. In Britain, May is under pressure to give EU citizens who are already living here an assurance that they will be able to stay. Even the hardline Brexiteer trade minister Liam Fox has tried to persuade her that foreign students in Britain, including a large number of Indians, should be counted separately from the overall figure of immigrants so that they are not restricted from coming here. May has dug her heels in on both issues. We live in hard times. In India the appointment of the controversial Mahant of the Ghorakpur Temple Yogi Adityanath as chief minister of the crucial state of Uttar Pradesh is an indication that hard Hindutva seems to be emerging. The First Minister of Scotland has now become a hardliner by demanding that a second referendum on Scottish independence should take place. The Sunday Observer’s political commentator has blamed this on May’s “rock-hard version of Brexit”. The referendum demand comes just at the time when May and her Brexiteers are trying to bolster the nations confidence by offering them a vision of a united Great Britain becoming an influential independent presence on the international stage. A threat to the Union of Great Britain has also come from the Catholic and Irish Nationalist Sinn Fein party’s success in Northern Ireland’s Assembly Election. The Catholic weekly magazine ‘The Tablet’ has described this as “a seismic shift in the political dynamics of the Province.” Sinn Fein will certainly not support a hard Brexit, which takes Northern Ireland further away from the Republic of Ireland and could even restore border controls between them. A hard Brexit would probably mean Britain adopting a deeply divisive economic policy, which would worsen Britain’s chronic employment problem. The post-Brexit economy being talked about out would be a low corporate tax, low social security, low employment protection economy to attract investment. It’s been compared to the economy of Singapore. Yet what is needed in Britain is greater protection for workers. The rosy figures for jobs in Britain hides the shameful fact that two-thirds of the children living in poverty are members of working families. The Trade Union Congress maintains that precariously low pay affects one in 10 workers.

Whenever one speaks of cool chemistry between the Gen-Next stars, the name that always springs up is that of the impeccable duo of Varun Dhawan and Parineeti Chopra. Even in the latest season of ‘Koffee With Karan’, when Karan Johar asked Parineeti Chopra about Varun Dhawan, the fun that she had at Varun’s expense was something that had to be seen to be believed. Well, the fun continued in the form of the immaculate camaraderie between Varun Dhawan and Parineeti Chopra during the recently held ‘HT Most Stylish Awards’. The adjoining video clip has the two of them having the time of their lives before the cameras. The ever jovial Parineeti jokingly stated that Varun sends her clothes and that she wears whatever he tells her to wear. And Varun Dhawan was at his best when he started questioning a reporter as

On the social media, Yash Raj Films Talent tweeted the adjoining clip which has Varun Dhawan and Parineeti Chopra at their jovial best, with the caption “ HTMostStylish parineetichopra & varundvn on the red carpet this evening! Always have some great banter!” Readers may recall that, even though Varun Dhawan and Parineeti Chopra have never been seen in a full-fledged Bollywood film, they did come together for a special number in Dishoom tilted ‘Jaaneman Aah’. Besides the track, the sizzling chemistry between Varun Dhawan and Parineeti Chopra acted as one of the driving forces for the film’s success.

Will Naam Shabana change the way Bollywood looks at spin-offs? Agency | Mumbai

Films on intelligence agencies attract the audience for their thrilling content, but the subject needs to be handled responsibly, says Shivam Nair who has helmed the forthcoming movie Naam Shabana. Naam Shabana is a spin-off on Baby, which told a gripping tale of a group of secret agents on a mission to eliminate terrorists. Taapsee Pannu will be seen playing an undercover agent in the movie, and she has undergone rigorous training sessions to perform action

stunts. Talking about it, Nair said in a statement, “The espionage genre requires a precise treatment to it when brought to life on celluloid. The plot needs to be in sync with the functioning and mechanisms of real life elements involved. A lot of in-depth research and understanding goes into the sketching of each character and their complexities. For a director, it is a very responsible subject to cater to as it involves depicting the country’s security apparatus.”

Shilpa Shinde on sexual harassment charges: Sanjay ji touched me on the pretext of taking a photo

Actor Shilpa Shinde filed an FIR against Sanjay Kohli, the producer of her last show Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hai, accusing him of sexual harassment on Thursday. The actor says that it all started out as a joke, but she tried to stop when things went out of control. “In our industry everything is taken lightly. Guys say so many things and if you react to them, they go like ‘we are kidding’. Things like – ‘You are looking, hot sexy’ - are common. Sanjay ji used to come on the set and while Benaifer would take care of all the paper work, he would

be the one who would talk like this to us,” she says. Picking out specific instances when she felt sexually harassed, Shilpa says, “Once Sanjay ji told me that for the promotion of show, we will have to go out.and that we will have a nice time. Also, in the make-up room, he came close to me and photo lete huye and apna haath rakha mujhe…I could feel that touch was not right,” she says. Shilpa says that she brought

this up with her co-actor Saumya Tandon as well. “I spoke to Saumya also about this, but she was like – ‘Humari industry mein koi rape nai karta Shilpa’. But I told her that I was feeling very uncomfortable,” she says, adding, “Later I got to know that Saumya told Benaifer (co-producer Benaifer Kohli, Sanjay’s wife) because two days later Benaifer asked me if I wanted to leave the show. She told me - ‘yeh kya keh rahi ho tum…koi pyaar se baat karta hai, toh tumhe yeh sab lagta hai. Humein do minute lagenge tumhara career spoil karne mein.’

Why is Deepika Padukone refraining from speaking on Padmavati controversy? (H.S.) | Mumbai

Deepika Padukone has always been credited as one of the strongest women in Bollywood. Whether it was her struggle with depression or the cleavage row, Deepika has never shied away from speaking her mind. However, ever since she has gone to Hollywood, she is not really speaking up on issues that are bothering Indian films or her contemporaries. The actor was recently at a brand launch where she refused to comment on anything other than the brand but she is an actor first that makes it her responsibility to answer anything that concerns her job. Isn’t it? Even at another event, she spoke about her collaboration with Sanjay Leela Bhansali while declining comment about the film’s sets being torched in Kolhapur. She clearly mentioned that she will not talk about the unrest that happened at the Padmavati sets, forget about nepotism and CBFC. Her co-stars from the film have commented against the vandalism on their film sets, and the opposition director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has received. Now, this makes us wonder if she just doesn’t want to be quoted on controversial headlines because surely not everyone can be Twinkle Khanna or Kangana Ranaut. The actor plays the character of Rani Padmini in the film. Shahid Kapoor plays her husband Raja Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh plays Alauddin Khijli. Speaking about the opposition to Padmavati, Shahid said on Friday, “It’s unfortunate that something like this is happening and of course, we have become soft targets. I hope people give an opportunity to the filmmaker to express his views and then choose to say what they need to say.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal cancelled his visit to Gujarat, scheduled on Sunday, in light of the upcoming civic polls in the national capital, which he is busy preparing for. “AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal will not be attending the Gandhinagar meeting. We have been told that he is busy with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)

polls where names of candidates are being finalised,” Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Saurashtra zone convener Kanu Kalsaria told reporters in Ahmedabad on Saturday. “But tomorrow’s programme will be held as per schedule in the presence of party’s Gujarat in-charge, Gopal Rai,” he said. For tomorrow’s event, volunteers from across the 182 assembly segments in the state will gather at Chhavni Maidan in the state capital to discuss strategies for the upcoming Gujarat assembly elections and plan its door-to-door campaign.

To prevent private schools from charging exorbitant fees in absence of clear laws, the Gujarat government Saturday announced to bring a Bill providing for constitution of a Fee Regulatory Committee. “The Gujarat Self-Financed Schools (Regulation of Fees) Bill, 2017″ will be tabled for discussion and voting in the last two days of the ongoing Budget session, ending March 31,” Gujarat Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama told reporters here. The Bill empowers the state government to constitute a Fee Regulatory Committee “for the purpose of determination

of fee for admission to any standard or course of study in self financed schools.” This committee will be headed by a Chairman, who can be either a retired district and sessions judge or a retired IPS or All India Services officer. Other members to be nominated by the government include a Chartered Accountant, a civil engineer or an approved government

valuer, representative of private school management and one academician. The committee will have jurisdiction over all the private schools, right from pre-primary to higher secondary private schools affiliated to Gujarat Board or CBSE. Each and every private school will be required to submit their fee structure before the panel and take approval.

Gujarat High Court on Friday stayed the proceedings of RTI activist Amit Jethva’s murder case following a petition by his father regarding witnesses turning hostile due to alleged threats by key accused, former BJP MP from Junagadh, Dinu Bogha Solanki. Earlier in the day, a special CBI court concluded the trial and reserved its judgment for April 11. Bhikhabhai’s petition cites a CBI affidavit filed in the Supreme Court where the agency has stated that “…after the chargesheet was submitted…witnesses had complained of being approached and of receiving threats… The complaints have been sent to the Gujarat police for investigation. However no such investigation has been completed between 2013 and 2017.” The CBI had filed the affidavit in December, 2016.

The panel might have two to three names per seat. “We have decided not to give tickets to those claimants who have lost two assembly elections in the past,” Solanki said. “We have also decided not to give tickets to those who have lost by a margin of 20,000 or more votes in the last assembly polls,” Solanki said adding that

winnability is the criteria. The opposition party, anticipating early polls has decided to prepare the lists of candidates to ensure that they are not caught unaware. The Congress is out of power in the state since last 25 years. “The party has also decided to give at least one ticket to woman in each district of the state,” Solanki said. Earlier, the Congress had invited applications from party workers who are interested in the contesting the polls. Party sources said that it was decided that sitting MLAs of the party will not be allowed to change their constituencies.
