Delhi receives highest single-day rain in three years: IMD

Delhi received 12 mm of rainfall in a 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on Saturday, the highest in a day in March in three years, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The Safdarjung observatory, Delhi’s primary weather station, recorded 12 mm rainfall between 8:30 am on Friday and 8:30 am on Saturday.The city recorded a minimum temperature of 15.3 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season’s average, the IMD said. The relative humidity was recorded at 85 per cent at 8:30 am, it added.

India recorded a single-day rise of 1,590 fresh coronavirus cases, the highest in 146 days, while the number of active cases of the infection climbed to 8,601, the health ministry said on Saturday.
The death toll due to the viral disease has gone up to 5,30,824 with six more fatalities -- three reported from Maharashtra and one each recorded in Karnataka, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand, according to the ministry’s data updated at 8 am. The daily
positivity was recorded at 1.33 per cent while the weekly positivity was pegged at 1.23 per cent.With the fresh cases, India’s COVID-19 tally has climbed to 4,47,02,257. The active cases account for 0.02 per cent of the total caseload, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.79 per cent, according to the ministry’s website.The number of people who have recuperated from the viral infection has gone up to 4,41,62,832, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.19 per cent.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture in its report submitted on March 6 on the demand for grants by the Ministry of Civil Aviation has expressed concern over the high fares charged by private airlines in the domestic
sector. The level of misinformation can be gauged from the fact that even after the last ticket has been sold, the website is showing the same number of seats as announced before the ticket sale, the report wrote. This shows that airline operators mislead people and force passengers to pay more. The committee therefore recommended that the Ministry of Civil Aviation prepare appropriate guidelines to rationalize air fares and make it mandatory for airlines to publish correct information on their websites.

The government has bowled a googly by suddenly withdrawing tax benefits on long-term capital gains on debt instruments. It has included this last-minute change in a Finance Bill that has been passed by Parliament without debate.As it happens, India’s tax rates for capital gains have been far too lenient and favoured the top income-earners who comprise the bulk of the asset-holders. A review was therefore overdue, but not in the form of the government’s piecemeal approach.The first issue is one of principle: That “unearned” income should not be taxed at lower rates than “earned” income. Not everyone accepts the principle, and one could quibble about what is earned and what is not. You certainly have to work at investing your capital wisely, but it is your money that is working for you, more than the other way round. Either way, there is no case for preferential treatment. Such logic is ignored in practice, for most countries offer preferential rates of tax for capital gains.This is heavily influenced by the fact that capital crosses national boundaries more easily than workers, and a country that has stiff taxes on capital gains will get less foreign portfolio investment, if not suffer a capital outflow. Practicality rules.Nevertheless, in a world of growing inequality of income and wealth, preferential tax treatment of capital becomes steadily more difficult to defend. The question though is what should be taxed: The wealth itself or income from that wealth? Or both?Most countries have some form of tax on wealth, usually with convenient loopholes. India is an outlier as it has abolished both estate duty and wealth tax, and it has no gift tax for close relatives, including linear descendants. Surely, this should be the first point of attack, because the lack of any tax on wealth perpetuates inequality from one generation to the next. The practical counter is that you are unlikely to garner much revenue.When it comes to taxing returns on invested wealth.

At least 12 people were injured and 30 houses damaged after a tornado hit the Bakenwala village in this Punjab district, officials said on Saturday. The tornado also damaged standing crops in the fields and kinnow orchards, they said. Bakenwala resident Gurmukh Singh said, “Villagers saw the tornado around 4 pm on Friday.” It caused damage in a 2-2.5-km area, he said. Deputy Commissioner Senu Duggal, who visited the affected village, said the administration shifted those villagers whose houses were damaged to the local government school. “The administration will also begin the process to assess the loss of property and crop that will be compensated by the government,”.

The Rs 865-crore initial share sale of electronic manufacturing services firm Avalon Technologies will open for public subscription on April 3. The three-day initial public offering (IPO) will close on April 6, and the bidding for anchor investors will open on March 31, according to the red herring prospectus (RHP).
The company has cut the size of its IPO to Rs 865 crore from Rs 1,025 crore planned earlier. Now, it plans to mobilise Rs 320 crore from fresh issuance of equity shares and Rs 545 crore through an offer for sale (OFS) of shares by promoters and existing shareholders.Proceeds from the fresh issue would be used towards debt
payment, funding working capital requirements and general corporate purposes.In January, the company received capital markets regulator Sebi’s go-ahead to float the IPO.
