Delhi Police on Friday said that Aam Aadmi Party MLA Somnath Bharti, who is evading arrest, is allegedly being helped by at least two persons who have long criminal records in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. “Bharti is behaving like a professional criminal and his conduct shows that either he is himself capable of thinking like one or he is taking help of others who have expertise in crime,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Dependra Pathak. “We have information about at least two individuals - with long criminal records who have been helping the legislator from the

A year after decisively resetting US-India ties and setting a new rockstar bar for community outreach in New York, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s current US visit stands to bring expectations back down to Earth. Most of his visit will be focused on the UN, outreach to Silicon Valley’s Indian diaspora and to American business leaders. But the multilateral agenda is complicated and slow-moving; so are India’s economic reforms, which hold the key to attracting further business and investment. From the Modi agenda in the US, then, look not for big breakthroughs, but for incremental progress on issues important to both New Delhi and Washington. Last September, Modi’s US visit received a stratospheric level of attention. His Madison Square Garden homecoming by the Indian-American community was charged with excitement. The Modi-Barack Obama summit in Washington, with a symbolic stroll around the Martin Luther King Jr memorial, begat a bromance and resulted in the joint declaration of an Indo-US “vision statement”. A mere four months later, the bonhomie continued when Modi offered a precedent-breaking invitation to Obama to be the first-ever American chief guest at India’s Republic Day. That summit resulted in an important “Delhi Declaration of Friendship” and a “Joint Strategic Vision for the Indian Ocean and the Asia Pacific Region”. It’s hard to see “Modi in the US”, take two, match the level of excitement either of his visit last year, or of Republic Day. For one, Modi’s return to US shores this year now seems routine for a world leader, no longer weighed down by the visa questions of the past. For another, the policy announcements that came from previous summit-level meetings need to shift to the less glamorous implementation phase, not more vision declarations. But the third reason is that the core pursuits for Modi at the UN and with US investors hinge on tough reform slogs, both multilaterally and at home, which will inevitably take much more than a visit to realise. Take the UN issues first. India has two overarching priorities for Modi’s New York interactions: UN Security Council expansion to include a permanent seat for India, and a larger role in the governance — especially mandate setting — of international peacekeeping. India has been advocating strongly for Security Council reform for decades, and while the US has endorsed a permanent seat for India in an expanded Security Council, the politics of this issue are so complicated (How big should it get? Who should be on it, and how is each region represented? What about veto power?) that it will likely require years to achieve.

Agency | New Delhi Maruti Suzuki signed a wage settlement agreement with workers of its Gurgaon and Manesar plants under which employees will get an average salary hike of around Rs 16,800 per month over a three-year period. Talks for the wage settlement had been on for over 6 months, and the new agreement has been reached after discussions spread over many rounds. Company sources said the average hike in the salary of workers will be 38% over three years compared with their remuneration in 2014-15. The three-year agreement will be implemented with retrospective effect from April this year, Maruti Udyog Kamgar Union (MUKU) General Secretary Kuldeep Janghu said. Workers will receive 50% cent of the increased salary in the first year and 25% each in the remaining two years. “For the first time, the unions of both Gurgaon and Manesar plants, including those of Maruti Suzuki Powertrain, reached an amicable agreement with the management late last evening,” Janghu said.

As the death toll from the Haj stampede at Mina rises to 717, nine pilgrims from Gujarat are among the 14 Indians killed in the incident. According to a list released by the Indian Haj Mission, nine pilgrims from Gujarati had been identified among those killed, while another injured. Those killed have been identified as Mohammed Hanif Shaikh, Madinabibi Hanif Mahammad, Divan Ayubsha Bafaisha, Divan Jubedabibi Ayubsha, Rehmat Qasam Soda, Fatima Karim Betara, Havabhai Ishak Bolim, Johra Nagori, Ruksana Nagori from Gujarat. Moving beyond regular postal and banking operations, Gujarat Postal Circle will soon set up a Post Shoppe, which will sell products ranging from stationery to souvenirs and books and gift items in there. The Post Shoppe is aimed at bringing various items of selected utility products on sale under one roof. “We are looking at different business arrangements. After its successful opening in Bangalore, Chennai and Jammu, we plan to introduce Post Shoppe in Gujarat, where we will sell all kind of items,” said Brigadier Sanjeev Thapar, chief postmaster general, Gujarat Postal circle. Gujarat post will initially open Post Shoppe in Ahmedabad,
Vadodara and Rajkot. “These Post Shoppe will be set up within the premises of existing post offices, which have good footfall. It will be a kind of modern post office,” added Thapar. Items such as photo frames, pens, markers, gum, books, mugs and even a collection of HMT watches are currently being sold in existing Post Shoppe in other cities in the country. These and other items like CD/DVDs, pen drives and philately items will also be sold in Post Shoppe, which will be set up in Gujarat. “We had set up a Post Shoppe during Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2015. In a significant development, the Gujarat High Court has ruled that in cases of minor Muslim girls, the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, will prevail over the provisions of Muslim personal laws. The court, while quashing an FIR of rape and abduction of a minor girl by the petitioner who married her, ordered the police to probe the case under the provisions of Child Marriage Act.
