A woman and her 21-year-old son were killed after their motorcycle skidded off the road in Tonk district of Rajasthan. The victims were on their way to a nearby place when the incident occurred yesterday in Diggi police station near Lava village. Parvati Devi (44) and Lokesh died in the incident. Lokesh lost control over the motorcycle due to construction on the road leading to the mishap, the police said.

Tata group on Tuesday filed caveats in Supreme Court, Bombay High Court and National Company Law Tribunal to prevent ousted Tata Sons Chairman Cyrus Mistry from getting an ex-parte order against his sacking. This comes a day after a board announcement said that Mistry would be immediately replaced by Ratan Tata, for an interim period of four months. According to sources, the Tatas don’t want any

(H.S.) | New Delhi The Islamic State said on Tuesday its fighters were responsible for an attack on a police training centre in the Pakistani city of Quetta that killed 60 people and injured 120. The Amaq news agency, often used by the IS to claim attacks, described the attack as a “three-man suicide raid”. It said the IS fighters from the terror group’s Khorasan chapter “used machine guns and grenades, then blew up their explosive vests in the crowd”. Amaq posted a

photo of the three fighters who purportedly carried out the attack on social media. Before Amaq published the claim on social media, Maj Gen Sher Afghan, chief of the paramilitary Frontier Corps in Balochistan, told the media that the attack was carried out by the Al-Alami faction of the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ). Intercepted calls between the attackers and their handlers suggested there were “three militants who were getting instructions from Afghanistan”, he said.

Singh Yadav said there would be no change at the helm of the government, meaning his son Akhilesh Yadav would continue as Chief Minister. He rea-

soned it was too late to consider such a move as the election code of conduct would soon be enforced in the State. However, keeping the mystery alive, Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav avoided any direct answer to questions on whether Mr. Akhilesh Yadav would be the chief miniterial face of the party in the 2017 elections.

Rs 5-cr ‘penance’ wrong, Fadnavis clarifies stand

Facing criticism over reportedly “brokering” a deal between producers of Bollywood movie “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Raj Thackeray, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has said he opposed the condition that filmmakers will have to contribute Rs 5 crore to an army welfare fund. Two central ministers too disapproved of the deal. Defence minister Manohar Parrikar said the government did not appreciate catching anyone’s neck to contribute, making it clear that donation to the army is “voluntary”. Information and broadcasting minister M Venkaiah Naidu dubbed the MNS demand as “wrong ”. Karan Johar’s film faced protests by MNS workers for casting Pakistani actor Fawad Khan. The film’s smooth Diwali release, later this week, was ensured at a meeting of Film Producers’ Guild, producers and the MNS. It was mediated by Fadnavis last week. Makers agreed that under-production films featuring Pakistani actors will pay Rs 5 crore to the army fund as “penance ”. The producers also agreed to include a tribute to Indian soldiers at the start of Johar’s film, as the so-called compromise triggered outrage with many describing Thackeray’s monetary condition as “extortion”. Apart from the opposition, ruling coalition partner Shiv Sena slammed Fadnavis’s intervention in the matter, terming it an act of “siding with Pakistani personalities.” The army too appeared uncomfortable with the “penance”. Fadnavis, however, defended his intervention to resolve the issue, saying democratic governments at times will even talk to separatists and left ultras for the sake of peace. When Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis invited Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Karan Johar and other representatives of the film industry to his official residence on Saturday to broker a truce — after the MNS threatened to disrupt the showing of Johar’s film Ae dil hai mushkil starring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan — he diminished the fundamental pact between the citizen and the state. The “solution” arrived at, payment of Rs 5 crore by the filmmaker to an army fund, resembles the hafta given to assuage the local bully who has already intimidated the policeman. That there should be a price tag to law and order, that a filmmaker should have to pay money to ensure a violence-free passage of a film, speaks of the times we live in when nationalism is becoming a cover for an everyday assault on civility and freedom by assorted non-state actors. But most of all, it speaks of the stark abdication by the chief minister and his government of its responsibility to ensure and protect the rule of law. But there was more than one cave-in in last week’s meeting in Mumbai. Karan Johar and other industry seniors had an opportunity — to take the moral high ground, to stand up to the bully, and to show up the cravenness of their government by refusing to compromise with the freedom of speech and expression. They failed, but what was far worse, they didn’t even put up a fight. Far from defending the liberty to make the film they want, with the actors they choose, Johar and Co. have let the MNS frame the issue as one that involves nationalism and patriotism.

This is in recognition of their exemplary leadership in their companies,” Ratan Tata said in a statement the 148 year old business house appointed Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, and N. Chandrasekaran, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as additional directors on the Tata Sons Board. This takes the Board count to 11 members.

Rock On 2 trailer is out and it is fantastic. From music to the mood, from performances to the vibe — well, lets just say it has Magik. Purab Kohli, Arjun Rampal and Farhan Akhtar are back together and they have Shraddha Kapoor and Shashank Arora giving them company. But the path to musical success is one strewn with tears and fights, as we saw in Rock On and it is no different this time. Farhan is living away from his family, a man haunted by his past. Shraddha makes great music but she can’t finish it. Her father doesn’t approve, can that be the reason? These two come together and the result

Kangana made this revelation on actress Neha Dhupia’s show “#NoFilterNeha” when she was speaking about the weird situations she had to go through while shooting for her films. And as it happens, changing clothes outside the vanity van is not something which Kangana did for the first time. Kangana said that during shooting of ‘Queen’ she changed clothes at cafes in Europe. Something similar happened while she was shooting for “Rangoon” in Arunachal Pradesh. “That happens all the time. When you’re thrown out of your comfort zone, initially its intimidating. It doesn’t

Long after you have seen the trailer, you will remember the song and the video footage. The fact that the sequel is set in the North East is intriguing. Rock On came out. Its original fans are older, its new fans are thirsting for something new. We are sure the film can satisfy them all. And make great music in the bargain. Directed by Shujaat Saudagar, Rock On 2 has music by Shankar-Ehsan-Loy. The film starring Farhan Akhtar, Shraddha Kapoor, Purab Kohli, Arjun Rampal, Sahana Goswani, Prachi Desai is all set to release on November 11.

Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri’s 25th anniversary plans are giving us marriage goals (H.S.) | New Delhi

Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri are one power couple of Bollywood who continue to give everyone marriage goals. And the two are set to mark their silver jubilee anniversary on Tuesday. Considering Shah Rukh has been super busy shooting Imtiaz Ali’s next, The Ring, all over Europe and with the post production of his film Dear Zindagi, it is understandable that the actor might need to make time to be with Gauri on the special day. But we don’t doubt the calibre of SRK. He is one workaholic who doesn’t mind hopping places and time zones to fulfil his commitments, be it professional or personal. He

is currently in Lisbon shooting for The Ring. According to reports, Shah Rukh will wrap the shoot soon and fly back to India to celebrate his 25th anniversary with his wife. Even though Shah Rukh is an extrovert, he can be very private when it is about family time. While he never disappoints in terms of media interactions on his birthday and festivals, he cele-

brates his anniversary exclusively with Gauri and three children — Aryan, Suhana and AbRam. Also with Diwali round the corner, SRK will be throwing a bash for his industry friends. Hence, it will be double celebration in Mannat this year. As per reports in DNA, “This couple hosts a Diwali bash every year. So this year, everyone is expecting it to be a double

While Priyanka Chopra has made a number of such appearances, including at Oscars and Emmys, it would be a debut for Deepika. And the million dollar question: Who would Deepika present the award to? (H.S.) | New Delhi Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam are doing all it takes to raise curiosity among the fans for their upcoming release Kaabil. While we are still eager to watch the trailer that launches on Wednesday, the actors have found out a novel way to involve the fans in the film’s promotions. Hrithik has invited his fans to drop him a message on Facebook Messenger in order to get the first view of his film’s trailer. In fact, the actor also shared a motion poster of Kaabil in which Hrithik looks very intriguing and gives us a

hint that his character in the film is on a journey. But what is it? That’s a mystery. Hrithik plays a visually-impaired man in the film. But is Yami Gautam visually impaired too? With the release of the trailer, we are likely to get the answer to all these questions. Yami Gautam took to her Twitter account to introduce us to the character of Hrithik Roshan. She shared an image from the film along with a caption that read, “When d light goes out, will u embrace d darkness? Presenting Hrithik Roshan as Rohan in Kaabil!”

for a while now. Reports in the media suggest that Arbaaz and Malaika are keen to give each other a chance. Now one may wonder what may have led to this change of heart. Well, as it happens the two stars succumbed to family pressure. It is not unknown that both Malaika and Arbaaz’s family have been trying to patch things up between the

two. After the 43-year old diva left her house to go back to her parents, she was seen quite a number of times at family gatherings of the ‘Khan-daan’. It was also reported that her brother-in-law superstar Salman Khan tried to iron out differences between them by talking. This fresh development about the split hints that maybe the talks bore fruits after all. Malaika and Arbaaz have been married for 18 years now and have a son named Arhaan. Earlier this year, they had issued a joint statement confirming the split saying that they want a break from each other to think about their lives.

They even met esteemed lawyer Kranti Sathe for the same, and were all set to file the papers post Diwali. But they may have dropped the plan

IPL rights bid tangle may finally trigger end to BCCI-Lodha panel standoff

Agency | Mumbai Xiaomi on Tuesday launched its latest flagship smartphone, the Mi Note 2, at its ‘Curved to Impress’ event in Beijing. The smartphone’s highlight is the use of both front and back 3D curved glass, which also gives the Mi Note 2 a dual-edge curved display like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, though perhaps not as extreme in scope. The company is calling it a two-sided curved display. The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 will be available in three variants: a 4GB RAM/ 64GB inbuilt storage model priced at CNY 2,799, a 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage model priced at CNY 3,299, and the Global Edition 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage model priced at CNY 3,499. The last has support for global LTE bands (with support for up to 37 LTE bands). The smartphone will be available in Piano Black and Glacial Silver colour variants, and an aluminium build.

Uranus may have two undiscovered moons: Study

(H.S.) | New Delhi For all the riches it has brought, it’s the Indian Premier League (IPL) that has also given the cricket board all its grief. The franchise T20 league has revolutionised cricket around the globe, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has stumbled from one controversy to another since the glitzy tournament began in 2008. And the BCCI must be real-

ising that the league’s potential to rake in big money alone can’t mean ‘business as usual’ as the latest developments in its tug-of-war with the Supreme Court-empowered Justice RM Lodha committee show. The cricket board was forced to call off the mega renewal process of the IPL broadcast rights, which, other than prominent television companies Star and Sony, also involved Facebook and Twitter, the

last two entering the fray as it sees a huge digital potential for the league. The Supreme Court has in its orders on October 7 and 21 tightened the grip over the finances at the BCCI’s disposal in a bid to ensure it complies with the exhaustive recommendations of the Lodha panel to usher in reforms. Having first stopped state units from spending grants received from BCCI, the Apex Court has also ordered that the board cannot proceed with major commercial plans without clearance from the court-appointed panel. And the Lodha panel, having faced the BCCI’s resistance to carrying out root-and-branch reforms, has hit where it hurts most --- in money matters that makes the sports body the most influential in the cricket world.

Australia vs South Africa: Australia Test stars have point to prove

Agency | Washington Uranus may have two tiny, previously undiscovered moons orbiting near two of the planet’s rings, researchers using data from NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft have found. Rob Chancia, a doctoral student at University of Idaho in the US, spotted key patterns in the rings while examining decades-old images of Uranus’ icy rings taken by Voyager 2 which flew by the planet 30 years ago. e noticed the amount of ring material on the edge of the alpha ring - one of the brightest of Uranus’ multiple rings - varied periodically. A similar, even more promising pattern occurred in the same part of the neighbouring beta ring. “When you look at this pattern in different places around the ring, the wavelength is different - that points to something changing as you go around the ring. There’s something breaking the symmetry,” said Matt Hedman, an assistant professor of physics at the University of Idaho.

New study claims pregnancy raises stroke risk in younger, not older women

Agency | Miami Doctors have long warned women that getting pregnant later in life can raise the risk of stroke, but a study Monday suggested that actually, only young women face this increasing risk. The findings in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Neurology compared stroke rates among pregnant and non-pregnant women of different age groups. Previous studies have focused on the rate of stroke among pregnant women of different ages -- finding stroke is more common among older women -- but have not included a non-pregnant, aged-matched control group for comparison. “Despite stroke being a rare event in young women, 18% of all strokes in women younger than 35 years were associated with pregnancy,” said the study led by Eliza Miller of Columbia University. “In contrast, among older women of childbearing age, 1.4% of strokes were associated with pregnancy.” The findings are based on data on women hospitalised due to strokes in the state of New York from 2003 to 2012. Of the more than 19,000 women admitted for strokes during that decade.

SPORTS ROUNDUP Virat’s maturity as finisher gives Dhoni licence to be trigger-happy again

(H.S.) | Ranchi In a career bookmarked by that innings in the 2011 World Cup final, MS Dhoni’s instinctive self-promotions have been few and far between. Of late though, since the World Cup last year to be precise, this impulse shows a pattern. After India’s failed campaign Down Under, Dhoni has come up the batting order to No 4 at least once in every series. The results have been mixed though. Like in the extremely passionate series in Dhaka last year where Dhoni failed to prevent Bangladesh from taking an unassailable 2-0 lead despite

scoring 47. In the next match, however, he bettered his strike rate while scoring 69 to pull one back for India. By promoting himself against South Africa, Australia and now New Zealand, Dhoni finally is willing to assume another role. As captain, Dhoni can bat anywhere he wants to. But that innings in the World Cup final, coming at No. 5 ahead of Yuvraj Singh, strengthened the belief that only Dhoni has to finish the game. He revelled in that role for a long time, giving India memorable wins. But in the process, Dhoni started becoming conscious

of it. Coming in at No. 6 --- the position where he has batted the most --- he felt obliged to win India every game. This is why Dhoni began taking the less risky route of collecting singles and doubles and taking the game to the wire over bludgeoning opponents into submission. The scenario has changed though after Virat Kohli becoming India’s go-to man. Fastest to 26 centuries, Virat’s talent was never in question. But the numbers he has stacked up during chases are mindboggling. In the 59 matches India have won chasing with Virat in the side, he has compiled 3,514 runs at an average of 90.10 and a strike rate of 97.25. Dhoni has 2,428 runs at an average of 101.16 and a strike rate of 90.36 in 62 such innings. Interestingly, Dhoni and Kohli have an identical highest individual score while chasing --- 183. And both have come while batting at No 3.

State sports minister Aroop Biswas said 75 to

When asked about the chances of Kolkata holding the final, Tournament director, Javier Ceppi said, “This question keeps coming back and same thing I keep telling you. Before we can announce about final, we have to complete the work fully. We are extremely satisfied. Monsoon has been severe here so has been summer. We understand the weather constraint after January, we will have an assessment, then we will see whether a final or a key match can be played here,” he added.

Bribery Case: Bail for 2 ‘conduits’ as CBI fails to file chargesheet

Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Two cricket “bookies” — Sonu Jalan from Mumbai and J K Arora from Delhi — were granted default bail by the CBI special court on Monday after the central probe agency failed to file its chargesheet within stipulated time of 90 days from the date of arrest. They were arrested by the CBI on August 23 on the charges of being “conduits” of ex-joint director of Enforcement Directorate (ED), Ahmedabad, J P Singh in an alleged corruption case. Singh was shunted out of Gujarat after the CBI registered an FIR against him on the basis of a written complaint by ED director

Karnail Singh. The CBI has alleged that the two accused “demanded and accepted huge bribes” from several accused on behalf of Singh when he was investigating the IPL cricket betting and the Surat hawala racket cases. Another alleged bookie Jayesh Thakkar is likely to move bail plea on the same ground on Tuesday. Advocate R G Ahuja, who represented Arora and Jalan, said special judge S J Raje granted bail to the two after the CBI failed to file chargesheet on time. Granting them bail, the court put several conditions on the two “bookies”, surrendering their passports. In September, the same court had rejected their bail applications on the ground that chargesheet had not been filed and the investigation yet to be concluded.
