The team needed a big knock from a top-order batsman to have a shot at overhauling the mammoth Australian total Agency : SYDNEY Attributing India's ouster from the World Cup to crucial missed opportunities, former cricketers said the team needed a big knock from a top-order batsman to have a shot at overhauling the mammoth Australian total. Set a steep target of 329, the defending champions lost by 95 runs to the Aussies in the semifinal to crash out of the World Cup. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's run-a-ball 65 was the best by

an Indian batsman in a botched up chase as Australia set up a summit showdown with co-hosts and trans-Tasmanian rivals New Zealand in Melbourne on Sunday. "I think the best two teams have reached the final. They have the best two captains on display at the World Cup and they are the most balanced for these conditions," said former India skipper Rahul Dravid. Another former captain Sourav Ganguly said that

co-hosts score 328, the dice was heavily loaded against Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men. "India were outplayed by a much better team. First it was a good toss to win for Australian captain Michael Clarke. Second, it is the pressure of the target of 329, the pressure of chasing a big total that did India in. Had India batted first and put up 329, Australia would also have been under pressure. "Third, Australia had a better India lost to a much better

Nitish meets PM Modi; says Bihar set to lose Rs 50,000 crore due to Finance Commission Agency : New Delhi Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and raised issues regarding funding to Bihar. Nitish also raised the demand for Backward Reserve Fund for Bihar for the development of the state. He contended that his state will lose Rs 50,000 crore due to implementation of the 14th Finance C o m m i s s i o n recommendations which he wanted to be compensated by the Centre. Kumar, who had snapped his party JD(U)'s 17-year-old alliance with BJP in 2013 after it projected Modi as Prime Ministerial candidate for 2014 polls, met the Prime Minister for the first time.

Emerging from the meeting, the Chief Minister said he raised the issue of implementation of the Finance Commission recommendations which he contended will lead to an "estimated Rs 50,000 crore loss" to the state. He said the Centre's share in Centrally-sponsored schemes has been

decreased. "Altogether, it has been a loss to Bihar. That is why I have requested that Bihar should be compensated for this," Kumar told reporters. "The second issue that I have raised is that there is a question mark now also on the special assistance that Bihar used to get under BRGF (Backward Regions

Grant Fund) after the bifurcation of the state in 2000. Our doubts should be resolved. We should get that money and we should keep getting that money even in future," he said. He said the central government has already given its nod for all the schemes that are to be implemented in five years with the Rs 12000 crore fund that the state has got. PMO said the meeting was a "courtesy call". An allparty meeting convened by Kumar in Bihar on March 23, which was boycotted by the BJP, had decided to "write" to the Prime Minister about the "estimated Rs 50,000 crore loss" to the state due to the Finance C o m m i s s i o n recommendations.

bowling attack. Once you (India) let Australia score 328 then it was a difficult proposition for India," he added. Australian spin legend Shane Warne said the Indians let it slip when they failed to capitalise on the good start that openers Rohit Sharma (35) and Shikhar Dhawan (45) provided. "Both Rohit and Shikhar got off to a flier and gave India a real chance. Ultimately, you need the top three-four to get a big hundred

to have a chance in such a huge chase," Warne said. Warne, however, credited the Australian bowlers for exerting relentless pressure on the Indians. The iconic tweaker also felt star batsman Virat Kohli's early dismissal pegged India back. "Australia bowled outstandingly. Besides, Virat Kohli got out early and when he gets out cheaply, India struggles," Warne pointed out.

Amid speculation over Rahul’s whereabouts, Congress announces poll Agency : New Delhi Amid a raging debate over Rahul Gandhi’s prolonged absence, the Congress on Thursday came out with a schedule for organisational elections under which the next Congress president will be elected by September 30, 2015. The schedule, finalised by the party’s central election authority, has been released at a time when speculation refuses to die down over the sabbatical of the Congress vice-president and when he would be back after “introspection” in the wake of a series of electoral

debacles. There had been speculation that Mr. Rahul Gandhi could be anointed any time as Congress president but his going on leave just on the eve of the commencement of the budget session last month has raised questions over his future plans. Posters have appeared in parts of Uttar Pradesh including Mr. Rahul Gandhi’s constituency Amethi requesting him to come home. A highlight of the new schedule is that for the first time, party polls will be held in two phases, first phase covering 18 States

and Union Territories and the second phase almost equal number of States and UTs. The Congress chief will be elected by September 30. Interestingly, the party elections will be over by July 31, 2015 in 18 States including Gujarat, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala and a host of States in the northeast in the first phase.

Australia makes India give it back In the end, the Indians were never really up to the challenge, bowling or batting. Flat in the beginning, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s band of merry men, after blitzing through the initial rounds of the World Cup, chose the critical semi-finals for their first loss. The consolation is they got as far as they did; the regret is that having got so far they faltered when it mattered most. Sadly it wasn’t even against a great team of the kind that beat India in the 2003 final in Johannesburg. Several factors contributed to the defeat, but it was the lack of a game plan that stood out. For such a crucial match, the team didn’t seem to have a well-rehearsed strategy, one that leveraged its own strengths without bothering too much about the past. In the event Umesh Yadav and even Mohit Sharma, who bowls at an amiable pace, tried too hard to turn into Wahab Riaz. Lacking the Pakistani speedster’s pace, accuracy and skill, the former made a hash of the short ball and let Aaron Finch, who was battling poor form, off the hook. The pull back when it came was too late and the damage done. Chasing 329 was never going to be easy, not on the big stage and on a big ground such as Sydney. While batting, even though the team got off to a decent enough opening, it was evident that India lacked the big impact player at the top, someone such as Brendon McCullum who could have given them the kind of start the Kiwi captain gave his side when chasing a similarly large total against South Africa in the first semi-final. And the rest of the batting, the much-trumpeted Virat Kohli included, just didn’t seem to have the stomach for the fight. It isn’t an uncommon occurrence. Choking when it matters most is the biggest fear for coaches of big teams. That is why teams travel with sports psychologists, why South Africa can’t seem to get beyond the semi-finals of the World Cup or why England can’t win a penalty shootout at a major football event. The winners in sport are those that can turn it on when it matters most, in particular when the heat is really on. Think Muhammad Ali against Joe Frazier in the 1975 Thrilla in Manila. Ali back against the ropes, battered and bruised through the early rounds, dug into his secret reserves to win despite, as he said later, being the closest to dying he had ever been. In the Champions League final at Istanbul’s Ataturk stadium in 2005, Liverpool came back from being 0-3 down at half time to draw level 3-3 and then went on to win the penalty shootout. Fear of failure clouds the mind and cramps the body. Equally, champions don’t entertain the thought of failure, ever. As the legendary Michael Jordan said, “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.” Of course, Australia are the masters of semi-finals. This is their seventh win in seven games at this stage in the World Cup. They are also playing at home with all the associated advantages of familiarity with conditions and crowd support. Social scientists say that just like in the animal kingdom, people are more dominant and experience lower levels of stress when they are on their own territories. Not that it always works. Last year at the football World Cup in Brazil, the hosts, overawed by the pressure of its home crowd, succumbed to a humiliating loss to eventual champions Germany.

She was a superstar during that time and today I am competing with her. It feels great. We have always maintained our friendship since 2008. NASA rover completes 11-year Mars marathon

Agency : Washington NASA's Opportunity Mars rover has become the first human-made vehicle to complete a marathon on another planet a feat accomplished in a record time of no less than 11 years. Opportunity passed the 26-mile (42-kilometer) mark Tuesday after approximately 11 years and two months traveling the Martian terrain, where it surpassed scientists' original expectations for a mission lasting just several months. The solarpowered robot, which landed on Mars' Eagle Crater in January 2004,

completed the marathon in the course of a 153-foot (46.5-meter) drive. "This is the first time any human enterprise has exceeded the distance of a marathon on the surface of another world," said John Callas, Opportunity project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California. During its mission, Opportunity and its twin rover, Spirit now defunct have discovered wet environmental conditions on ancient Mars, some of which are mild enough to have been favorable for life.

'Fats' may help treat type 2 diabetes Agency : New Delhi A new research has discovered that fats were a 'new weapon' in the war against type 2 diabetes and play an important role to treat it. Alan Saghatelian, Ph.D at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies with Barbara Kahn, M.D. conducted the research and found a new class of potentially therapeutic lipids, called fatty-acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids (FAHFAs), found in people with insulin resistance. The FAHFAs when administered to diabetic mice improved their

glucose metabolism and insulin secretion, and opened an avenue for the development of novel medications for the disease. Kahn's team at Beth Israel Medical Deaconess Center found that they could create obese mice that were unusually sensitive to insulin and suspected that the lipids found in them were behind it. The research on these newly discovered fats could lead to a diabetes therapy. Using the mass spectrometry technique, researchers identified a total of 16 different types of FAHFAs in the mice.

Ukrainian Mariya Muzychuk. It turned out to be another exciting day of tie-breaks and the biggest gainer was Arabidze who caused another upset at the expense of Viktorija Cmilyte of Lithuania winning the first and drawing the second tiebreak game. The other winner in the tie-break was Natalija Pogonina of Russia, who

scripted a big comeback beating Marie Sebag of France in both rapid games. Pogonina, the last remaining Russian in the fray, had lost the first game under normal time control against Sebag and had to equalise first before winning the tie-break. The championship this year had started with 64 players under knockout system.

Agency : PUNE The Mumbai side that looked off colour during the Ranji Trophy this year, looked in their elements as they defeated Gujarat by 92 runs in the Inter-zonal T20 tournament at MCA stadium in Gahunje on Wednesday. Mumbai's win saw a confident 71-ball 110 by opener Shoaib Shaikh. Batting first, Mumbai made 179-5. It was a free flow for Shaikh. The 28-year-old, who had scored 58 against Baroda in their first match, looked in good touch with

eight fours and four sixes. He shared a 75-run opening stand with skipper Aditya Tare (30) and then a 48-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer. Gujarat got off to a bad start. It was Siddhesh Lad who set the tone for Mumbai bowlers by getting Parthiv Patel (8) cheaply in the second over. Gujarat had only 10 runs on board then. Another opener Priyank Panchal was next to go on the first ball of the third over. This time the bowler was Shardul Thakur but Gujarat were still at 10.

Thakur dismissed Chirag Gandhi for a duck in the third over, leaving Gujarat helpless at 10-3.

World Cup 2015: Australia beat India to set up final clash with New Zealand Agency : SYDNEY India's near flawless title defence came to an agonising end on Thursday as they succumbed to pressure against the clinical Australians, who decimated the defending champions by 95 runs to romp into the finals and break a million Indian hearts. In an engrossing semifinal clash, four-time champions Australia rode on Steve Smith's classy 105 to post an imposing 328/7 before bundling out India for 233 in 46.5 overs to set up a summit clash with transTasmanian rivals and cohosts New Zealand in Melbourne on Sunday. After a dream run which saw them win seven matches on the trot, India's quest for a second successive World Cup title was finally thwarted by the formidable Australians, who outplayed Mahendra Singh Dhoni's bravehearts in every department at the fullypacked Sydney Cricket Ground. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (65, 65 balls) stood tall amid a disappointing batting show as he waged a lone battle to take India past the 200-run mark and make a match of it despite the steep asking rate. At the top, Shikhar

Dhawan was another notable performer with 45run knock. The Indians had themselves to blame for the loss as the bowling unit, which had performed admirably till now, failed to deliver when it mattered the most while the batting also crumbled under pressure. The jubilant Aussies broke into wild celebrations after Mitchell Starc castled Umesh Yadav (0) to dismiss the last Indian batsman in the 47th over. Home captain Michael Clarke was composed though as he shook hands with the Indians and acknowledged the Aussie supporters, who had interestingly been outnumbered by Indian fans. However, it was R Ashwin, who walked away with the honours with

fantastic figures of 1/42, which included the prized scalp of dangerous looking Glenn Maxwell (23, 14 balls) with a well thought out trap. It was because of Ashwin that India could stop Australia from racing away to a total in the range of 350 which looked possible when Maxwell started tonking the seamers. The Australian innings was all about Smith's approach and the manner in which he tackled the Indian bowling which has been a dominant force throughout the tournament. So simple yet effective was Smith's approach at the crease that it never seemed he was scoring at a rate of more than run-a-ball yet he did it with elan. The 100 came off 89 balls. The floodgates

Asian Games snub motivated me to make a comeback: Mandeep Agency : New Delhi The snub from the Asian Games gold medal-winning team motivated me to work harder and make a strong comeback into the Indian men's hockey team, said promising forward Mandeep Singh after his selection in the Sutlan Azlan Cup to be held in Ipoh, Malaysia. After being ignored for the Asian Games and Champions Trophy squad, Mandeep put up an impressive display in this year's Hero Hockey

India League to impress the selectors and make a comeback in the national team. "I was part of the World Cup squad in June last year but since then I missed out on other important tournaments. I was unlucky that I was not part of the gold winning team of the Asian Games. It

motivated me to work even harder and make a strong comeback," Mandeep said. The 24th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup will be played from April 5 to 12 where six teams - India, hosts Malaysia, Australia, Canada, Korea and New Zealand will fight for the title.

opened in the 10th over of the Australian innings bowled by Yadav where Smith smashed him for four boundaries. Yadav's first spell of five overs went for 39 with six boundaries and a six taken off his bowling. It started with a cover drive and ended with a hat-trick of pull-shots as Yadav repeatedly erred in length, bowling too short. The normally disciplined Indian pace attack bowled too

short as seven out of 11 boundaries hit by Smith came off pull shots. It was a short ball that finally ended a wonderful knock when Smith couldn't control the hook shot off Yadav's bowling to be holed out at deep square leg. Once Smith departed, Maxwell teed off but it was Ashwin's clever bowling and good captaincy by Dhoni that brought about the maverick Aussie's downfall. Ashwin

flighted one and Maxwell wanted to muscle it over deep square leg boundary found the only fielder placed at that position. Maxwell's departure saw a mini collapse as Australia slumped from 233 for two to 248 for five before Shane Watson (28) and James Faulkner (21) added 36 runs at a quick clip in only 4.2 overs as Australia posted a more than decent total in a crunch match.

Daredevils were led by Kevin Pietersen last year, but the franchise released him as part of an overhaul which saw them offload 13 players from their 2014 squad. Duminy was one of the few survivors and was preferred as the leader over star Indian allrounder Yuvraj Singh and Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews. Having finished as the last-ranked team in 2014 with just two wins from 14 matches, the franchise sought more balance in the team and finished as the biggest buyer at the players auction in February. Yuvraj became the most expensive buy of the auction after Daredevils spent Rs 16 crore (approximately $2.67 million). A proven match-

winner with a modest captaincy record in the IPL, Yuvraj was seen as the favourite to take over the captaincy but the management felt differently. According to Hemant Dua, the Daredevils chief executive, Duminy was the "right choice" as he is a "composed individual and well respected by his teammates and peers." Duminy has always expressed a strong desire to lead a team but does not have much experience in the role except for leading South Africa in the three-match Twenty20 series against

Australia last year when Faf du Plessis was rested. According to Dua what worked in Duminy's favour was the familiarity with the team and a good relationship with Daredevils' head coach Gary Kirsten. Duminy has been an integral part of Kirsten's strategy plan for South Africa. It was Kirsten, during his stint as the South Africa coach, who recalled Duminy to replace the injured Mark Boucher during the 2012 England tour. Kirsten has always believed Duminy has the attidue to be both a leader and a match-winner.

Naroda Patia survivors ask CJ to change appeals bench Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

Survivors of the Naroda Patia massacre approached Gujarat high court acting Chief Justice V M Sahai on Wednesday to request him to shift the case from the bench of Justices Ravi Tripathi and R D Kothari. This bench is currently hearing the appeals filed by Maya Kodnani and others against their conviction by the trial court. Eighty-four such victims made the representation just a day

before the bench is scheduled to take up the appeals. The victims said this division bench has "made up its mind to allow appeals and acquit the offenders". This is because this bench had recently granted bail to convict Kirpalsingh Chabra, observing that there was weak evidence. The victims said the bench has already reached a conclusion by appreciating the evidence — something that is not allowed in a bail hearing.

The victims have also expressed concern about their own security if the convicts are acquitted. "We are sure the applicants will be acquitted. In such circumstances, we have no other option but to vacate our residences from Naroda Patia and migrate to some other place or city since our lives will not be safe at Naroda Patia." Last week, a few victims had filed an affidavit taking exception to this bench hearing the case.

police said the probe, which will initially focus on the constables and head constables involved in the racket, may lead to an investigation of the suspected involvement of senior police officials. "Subordinate police personnel acting as middlemen (vahihatdar) between criminal elements and senior police officers are common in the force," said a senior cop. Speculation is rife in the state police that as the ACB digs deeper, lowerlevel personnel are likely to be made scapegoats to protect the big fish. "The names of some police officers serving in more than one district and more than one police agency are also under the scanner," said a senior ACB official. Sources in the ACB said the ED has given a detailed report to senior officials in the bureau, including the statements of the accused. "The ACB is now investigating the information in the report," said a senior police official. Sources in the police said the ED has discussed in detail how the betting racket was run by Kiran Mala and Tommy Patel from a luxury farmhouse in Vadodara district. It may be recalled that TOI had reported a few days ago that central investigating agencies such as the ED were engaged in a turf war with the Gujarat police and that the ED's busting of the betting racket appeared to be a result of this.

The west-Indian state Gujarat’s government has received Rs 735.37 crore as incentive from the Centre to increase its installed capacity in the renewable energy sector, the Assembly was informed here on Wednesday. The announcement was made in the House by Gujarat Energy Minister Saurabh Patel under Rule-44 of the state Assembly.
