Fire destroys Delhi’s National Museum of Natural History Agency | New Delhi
A massive fire gutted out the National Museum of Natural History post midnight on Tuesday. It took fire services over four hours to douse the blaze with 35 fire engines pressed into service. No casualties were reported. Large plumes of smoke emanating from the top floor of the FICCI building where the museum is housed, caught the security personnel’s eye at around 1:45 am. A call was made to the fire services and a few engines were rushed in from the Connaught Place fire station. No one was in the building at the time, fire services said. “My security personnel rang
me up and informed me about the smoke. I instructed them to call fire. By then I reached the spot. I also informed all FICCI members who also arrived in some time,” Jagmohan Bhisht, the caretaker in charge of security at the FICCI premises said. Waiting for justice, But the judiciary is not blameless
Chief Justice of India T.S. Thakur has lobbed the ball in the government’s court, pointing out that the problem of case pendency, which denies justice to millions, owes to its reluctance to fill the benches. His reference to a recommendation from the Law Commission in 1987, which had called for increasing the number of judges fivefold, points a finger at all the governments that have held office since that time. None of them showed sufficient interest in closing the gap, while both the population and the volume of litigation have grown rapidly. The courts generally draw public attention in extraordinary circumstances — when they rise to defend the Constitution and civil rights, or when they are criticised by the other pillars of democracy for judicial overreach or activism. Now, Justice Thakur has used the occasion of a meeting of chief ministers and chief justices of the high courts to focus, with visible anguish, on the quotidian operational challenges facing the judicial system. How could Make in India possibly work, he asked, if foreign investors are put off by the tardiness of dispute resolution? The flagship scheme provided an excellent tactical target, but the effect of pendency is most brutally felt by those without economic power. Undertrials have their right to liberty suspended for years at a time. The public, which depends on the courts for relief, hesitates to put assets like housing on the market. Indeed, poor legal protection urges Indians to be risk-averse as a matter of course, with significant economic and social implications. Justice Thakur has drawn attention to a long-festering problem of the judicial system. However, the judiciary, too, has not given sufficient attention to the small systemic interventions that could disproportionately increase the efficiency of justice delivery. For instance, the ease with which adjournments can be secured is a well-known cause of delay in civil cases. A direction from the chief justice limiting reasonable grounds for adjournment would reduce pendency considerably. Besides, cases in busy sectors of civil law fall into repetitive patterns.

Realisations could see incremental gain post the launch of the Vitara Brezza in March 2016. While compact segment sales (Swift, Ritz, Dzire, Celerio and Baleno) are the largest volume generator and constitute half of Maruti’s domestic passenger vehicle sales, the company’s erstwhile bread and butter, the mini segment (Alto, Wagon R), continues to see a declining trend. However, traders are cautious ahead of the start of the US Federal Reserve’s two-day policy meeting. The home currency closed at 66.52, up 0.14% from its previous close of 66.62. The rupee opened at 66.72 per US dollar and touched a high and a low of 66.48 and 66.79, respectively, in intraday trade. “This is supported by strong fundamentals like fresh selling of dollars by exporters and banks. Recovery in domestic market sentiments will lead to more positive movement in Indian rupee,” said Choice Broking in its daily report. India’s benchmark Sensex index rose 1.28%, or 328.37 points, to close at 26,007.30 points, a level last seen on 1 January. So far this year, the Sensex has fallen 0.42%. The Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan (BoJ) are set to meet and announce their monetary policy decisions this week. Analysts expect that the BoJ meeting on Thursday will be reactionary and dependent on the stance laid out at the Fed on Wednesday.

Encouraged by the success of the first three phases of statewide Gatisheel Gujarat to instill pro-people work culture in the administration, Chief Minister Anandiben Patel today launched phase-4 of the campaign. The government will take up 251 works under 19 themes. Even as the slogan Gatisheel Gujarat has become an identity of the state’s administration, she said it has achieved 138% success in phase-1, 126% in phase-2 and 133% in phase-3. It is not just a number but success story. The Chief Minister called for implementing the statewide Smart Village drive from Gujarat’s foundation day on May 1 to Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, 2016. She directed the district level officers form teams and fan out to villages once a week, to sit with the villagers, understand and solve their problems on-the-spot, in intensive collaboration with the local leaders and officials. She asked them to collate the positive outcome of Lok Samvad Setu as well. She said the work should not stop in any circumstances. The Chief Minister released a booklet on Gatisheel Gujarat Timetable 2016-17. An audio video presentation was also made on the occasion. Chief Secretary G.R. Aloria complimented the karma yogis of Gujarat Government for making a success of the first three phases of Gatisheel Gujarat and taking the state’s rich work culture down to the people.
