Kolkata : Prime Minister Narendra Modi should be wary of biting into the next bunch of ‘rosogollas’ that Mamata Banerjee sends him. Responding to his revelation that she sent him gifts of Bengali sweets and handpicked ‘kurtas’ once or twice each year, Mamata Banerjee today said she will still send Narendra Modi rosogollas from Bengal but not the soft, melt-in-your-mouth variety. “I will send him rosogollas made of mud with some stone chips thrown in -- like cashew nuts and raisins are used in laddu. Patna : CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat Friday hit out at union minister and senior BJP leader Giriraj Singh for his comment on the Muslim community and said he suffers from “foot and mouth disease”. Singh was on Thursday booked for violating the model code of conduct for his controversial remarks against the community at a rally in Begusarai on Wednesday in the presence of BJP national president Amit Shah, who was campaigning for him. He had said that members of the community need land even after their death for the burial of their mortal remains. “Giriraj Singh has the disease called ‘foot and mouth disease. The letter also indicated that Apoorva may have been framed since Rohit Tiwari’s family did not want her to get any share in his property. But the family has claimed the letter was written at the behest of Apoorva’s father, who is a well-known lawyer in Indore and served at a top post in the bar association, the sources said. Police have sought call details of the landline number at Rohit Tiwari’s Defence Colony residence. They have also taken Apoorva’s nail samples to ascertain if Rohit Tiwari’s skin was stuck in them during the fight, or to see the possibility of any other DNA present there.

India needs a prudent strategy to Chinese free trade
Should we applaud the Madras High Court’s decision to revoke a ban on Tik Tok, a video sharing app owned by Bytedance, a Chinese technology firm, that has over 120 million active monthly users in India? On the face of it, India should not block any social media platform, and certainly not because you can access pornography on it. So the judiciary’s initial decision banning the app in response to a Public Interest Litigation against Tik Tok was troubling. The ban was an abridgement of freedom of expression and a restriction on free media. It is just as well that the High Court revoked the ban, albeit after extracting a commitment from Bytedance that it would take measures against pornography. Yet if free speech suggests we shouldn’t ban Tik Tok, free trade suggests otherwise. There is a case to restrict Chinese apps from the Indian market. Why so? Remember that Indian content creators have always been locked out of the Chinese internet. The Communist Party of China might have erected the Great Firewall to prevent the Chinese people from getting ideas about liberty, freedom and democracy, but it has also become an economic barrier that shields Chinese companies from competition, permits them to steal intellectual property and creates an uneven playing field for foreign companies operating there. Beijing has used its power to dictate who and what is allowed to keep out global giants like Google, Facebook and Twitter. This allowed home-grown clones like Baidu, Tencent and Weibo to first dominate the China’s domestic market before stepping out into foreign markets. China’s internet and technology firms enjoy a massive home advantage that their Western and Indian competitors do not. Most of the platforms China blocks — Google, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and Soundcloud, for instance — might not be owned by Indian companies but are heavily used by Indian content creators. This means everyone from India’s biggest media companies to millions of individuals are practically denied access to the Chinese market. The argument that “you can always use the Chinese equivalents if you want to reach the Chinese market” doesn’t diminish the fact that Beijing’s restrictions and the Great Firewall are non-tariff barriers. So when Beijing intentionally and systematically prevents Indian companies and individuals from profiting from the Chinese market, should we allow Chinese companies to have a free play in ours? Without reciprocity, the free trade argument is weak. The answer thus becomes one of strategy. To the extent that imports from China provide us with net benefits, we should permit them. If computers, modems and phones produced by Chinese companies help us rapidly achieve high internet penetration while enlarging the consumer surplus, then it is in our interests not to restrict their imports. The same, however, does not apply to Chinese apps and social media platforms. India can ban Tik Tok without losing much. Users have quite few alternatives. On the other hand Bytedance, by its own admission, loses $500,000 every day it is not available in India. New Delhi must not fritter away the leverage. It should create a list of countries that do not provide our technology firms and content creators a level playing field, and then calibrate counter-measures in proportion to the level of discrimination. China is sure to figure on such a list. Beijing can hardly complain as long as it maintains its massive internet censorship and protectionist regime (and, incidentally, is closing down thousands of apps that promote pornography and other undesirable content.) Now, by itself, denying Chinese internet firms access to the Indian market will not persuade Beijing to bring down the Great Firewall. It will, nevertheless, serve as a global signal and strengthen New Delhi’s negotiating positions vis-a-vis Beijing. Moreover, in a plausible future where cyberspace is divided into two or three spheres of influence, restricting the market share of Chinese platforms will reduce - Kapilkumar M. New Delhi : Grounded Jet Airways’ chief executive officer, Vinay Dube, told the cash-starved airline’s staff that its group of lenders are unable to make any salary commitments until after the bidding process is complete. In a letter addressed to Jet Airways employees, Mr Dube wrote: “We have told them (banks) repeatedly that our employees are facing grave hardships owing to nonpayment of their salaries and that if this were to continue any longer, our employees will have no option but to find employment elsewhere.” The letter from the chief executive of the private sector carrier to its staff comes at a time Jet Airways owes money to its lessors, suppliers, pilots and oil companies. Pre Provision Profit (PPP) is likely to rise 17.1 percent YoY (up 25.6 percent QoQ) to Rs. 2,500.6 crore. HDFC Securities said 2.1 percent of the bank’s book still pertains to unrecognised stress, the non-watch list slippages have been sticky and asset quality has been volatile. “Factoring these, we expect slippages to take a while to trend below 2 percent,” said the report.

Maruti to set up hospital, school in Gujarat
Ahmedabad : The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Friday said it will set up a multi-speciality hospital and a senior secondary school in Sitapur in Gujarat. Both projects will be fullyfunded as CSR initiatives by MSI with an investment of around Rs 125 crore over a five-year period, it said in a statement. “Suzuki Group has set up its manufacturing plant in Hansalpur and continues to invest in the region. While we expand our business, we feel that it is our responsibility to positively impact the local community in the adjoining villages,” MSI MD and CEO Kenichi Ayukawa said in the statement. Through a need assessment, the company found that access to quality and affordable healthcare and education was an urgent requirement in this area, he added. The auto

Gujarat court convicts Asaram’s son Narayan Sai in rape case
Ahmedabad : A Gujarat court on Friday convicted Narayan Sai, son of jailed self-styled godman Asaram, in a rape case. The sessions court in Surat which convicted Narayan Sai will pronounce the sentence on April 30. In 2013, two Suratbased sisters approached police alleging they were raped by Asaram Bapu and his son Narayan Sai. One of them had accused Narayan Sai of repeatedly raping her between 2002 and 2005 when she was living at his ashram. Asaram has been convicted in a rape case in Jodhpur and is serving a life term.

Ahmedabad : In the wake of criticism over its 4.2 crore lawsuit against four Gujarati potato farmers, food and beverages giant PepsiCo has offered to settle the case if the farmers stop growing the registered potato variety used in its Lays chips. In an Ahmedabad civil court on Friday, PepsiCo’s lawyer offered a settlement on these terms: the farmers must give an undertaking that they will not use its registered variety and destroy their existing stocks, or must enter PepsiCo’s collaborative farming programme where farmers buy seeds from the company and sell the produce
back to the company. The lawyer for the farmers said they would need time to consider the offer, and to reply to the court. PepsiCo has invoked Section 64 of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights (PPV&FR) Act, 2001 to claim infringement of its rights. However, farmers groups cite Section 39 of the same Act, which specifically says that a farmer is allowed “to save, use, sow, resow, exchange, share or sell his
farm produce including seed of a variety protected under this Act” so long as he does not sell “branded seed”. For farmers groups as well as the corporate farming industry, the case is being seen as a precedent that could have a far-reaching impact on how other food crops are developed, sown and sold in the country. “In this instance, we took judicial recourse against people who were illegally dealing in our registered variety,”

Ahmedabad : A video of a pride of 14 lions quenching their thirst from a mad-made water pond some 20 km away from Gir sanctuary in neighbouring Amreli district went viral on social media on Thursday. Once a rare sight, videos capturing huge lion families have become rather common place with the burgeoning population of lions in Gujarat. In the past four months alone, nearly a dozen such clips have captured people’s imagination. A recent internal count undertaken by the state forest department has pegged population of big cats in Gujarat to a healthy 700. Officials said this includes 240-odd cubs between one and two years of age. This estimation, which comes ahead of the five-yearly lion census in 2020, puts the lion numbers at the highest ever in the history of Gujarat. There are 523 lions in the state as per
2015 lion census. Principal chief conservator of forest (wildlife) Akshay Saxena said lion conservation is a success in Gujarat despite setbacks like the 2018 canine distemper virus outbreak which wiped off 29 lions. Fingers crossed over the healthy population, Saxena said, “The count of 700 lions is just an observation ahead of the census and there could be duplication in sighting. According to the official data provided by the Narmada flood control unit in Vadodara, the water level at 8 am today has increased to 119.27 meters from 119.08 meters at the same time on April 22, when it started rising due to increase in inflow after running of hydel power generation units at Indira Sagar dam in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh. The live storage has also gone up to 1113.73 MCM from 1088.59 MCM. The huge reservoir with gross capacity (live +dead level) of 9460 MCM including full live capacity (at new highest level or overflow mark of 138.68 m) of 5760
MCM has seen around half a percentage of rise in live storage in four days. It was a significant thing in the midst of summer. Earlier, the water level of the dam on which around 3 crore population of the state was dependent for water needs, had also seen an unusual increase of over 3 meters (3.37meters to be precise) in last just 21 days from March 16 to April 5. It had gone up to 119.38 meters on April 5 from 116.01 meters at the same time on March 16. But from April 6 it started receding again. An official of SSNNL said there was enough water for meeting the drinking and other domestic needs of around 167 towns and more than 10000 villages that depend on our water supply throughout the summer and till the arrival of the next monsoon. The dam’s main power plant ie river bed one houses six 200 MW Francis pump-turbines to generate electricity and include a pumped-storage capability.
