SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Editorial

SUNVILLA SAMACHAR The Story Of Parvaiz Qureshi Standing Up Against Pervez Musharraf The Indian forces detected intrusion by Pakistani soldiers into Kargil heights in May 1999and the political leadership of the day, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and others were categorical that they had to be evicted. What followed was massive mobilisation of the IndianArmy, leading to a unique war, unique because it was fought in one district, Kargil alone, asVajpayee refused to enlarge its scope beyond eviction! The Indian Air Force (IAF)participated in a limited role in operations called Safed Sagar and conspicuously absent wasparticipation of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) into hostilities. This happened as the then PAF chief Pervez Mehdi Qureshi refused to allow the use of hisforce in this conflict. He told then Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to find a way to de-escalate as this India-Pakistan war had essentially been orchestrated by Pakistan Armychief General Pervez Musharraf. Qureshi said Musharraf had not confided in PAF top brassnor did even many top Pak Army Generals know about his plans!Of course, it is often said that Musharraf had presented a fait accompli to Mian Sharifwriggling out of which was virtually impossible. In July 1999, Sharif even went to Washingtonto request US President Bill Clinton to intervene, to ask India to step back but thoseentreaties failed. Atal conveyed to the US leadership that the question of ceding any territoryto Pakistan was out of question, irrespective of the costs. This firm message was conveyedto other nations also and the Northern Light Infantry (NLI) men who were leading the battleon Pakistani side got little, if any support, when the chips were down. So? During Kargil war in 1999, the Pakistan Army and Pakistan Air Force (PAF) wereheaded respectively by Pervez Musharraf and Parvaiz Mehdi Qureshi. As you speak theirnames, they sound almost same, just a minor difference of some letters in English spellings. But in character, they were temperamentally as different as chalk and cheese! Incidentally,at one time they were even shared a room with Aziz Mirza, the last named heading thePakistan Navy at one time.Three young men sharing a room, getting selected in different branches of Pakistan armedforces and rising all the way to the top. But that is not something we need to dwell more on.By all accounts, Qureshi had a life-long friendship with Musharraf but differed to the point ofnot allowing PAF to join the Kargil war! He knew Musharraf’s impulsiveness and advisedSharif against backing Musharraf. It is another matter that Musharraf staged a coup againstMian Nawaz Sharif later. That too is a story too well known in the contemporary history ofthe sub-continent.What is not known is how Qureshi was taken prisoner by the Indian Army after his aircraftwas shot down on November 22, 1971, five decades ago! In a manner of speaking, Qureshihad the distinction of becoming the piloting a Pakistan fighter aircraft which was the first tobe shot down in the 1971 India-Pakistan war, or the Bangladesh Liberation War. He was a Flight Lieutenant piloting a F 86 when he was shot down by missiles fired by a Folland Gnat,a diminutive fighter aircraft. Gnat pilots were considered the most feisty in another space, time, with legendary skills and took on much advanced Pakistani aircraft of that time.Another interesting fact about Qureshi is that when he bailed out and parachuted down, hewas captured by Indian soldiers. After taking him as a Prisoner of War (PoW), the soldiersstarted beating him up. He was then rescued by (then) Captain H S Panag, who went on tobecome a Lieutenant General in the Indian Army. Qureshi was the first Pakistani PoW in the1971 war. When President Ram Nath Kovind gave Vir Chakra to Group Captain AbhinandanVarthmanat New Delhi on Monday, for shooting down a Pakistani F 16 on February 27, 2019, Pakistandenied that it had lost any aircraft. ``Pakistan categorically rejects the entirely baselessIndian claims that a Pakistani F-16 aircraft was shot down by an Indian pilot” in February2019, the Foreign Office said in a statement. What it cannot deny is what different MiG variants have done to it in an era gone by. As earlyas in 1971 war of Bangladesh liberation, during the air war over Bangladesh, the IAF scoredits first victory with MiG-21s These MiGs were - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara similar to MiG21 Bison.

26/11 Mumbai attacks: The tipping point in Indo-Pak relations India looks towards Pakistan and demands punishment to the culprits, Pakistan continues to deny all the allegations Agency News:New Delhi November 26, 2021 will mark the 13th anniversary of the worst ever terror attack in India, which changed the dynamics and relationship between India and Pakistan for an indefinite time. as India looks towards Pakistan and demands punishment to the culprits, Pakistan continues to deny all the allegations. In November 2008, 10 terrorists entered into India from Pakistan via the sea route and opened fire indiscriminately, targeting

multiple important locations in Mumbai. The multi-targeted attacks killed at least 166 people, including atleast 18 security personnel besides injuring several others.Since then, India has been claiming that the terrorists were members of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and the attacks were masterminded from Karachi. India has backed up its claims by sharing dozens of dossiers with Pakistan, demanding action against the terror groups and its leaders, including Hafiz Muhammad Saeed and Zakiur

Rehman Lakhwi, who they say were the masterminds behind the attacks.Pakistan, on the other hand, has been rejecting India’s claims, stating that the members of the proscribed organisations have been probed by Pakistani courts, which have repeatedly given a clean chit to them, that too after consideration into

the dossiers that India claimed had irrefutable evidence. While Pakistan has been maintaining that the matter is being heard and investigated by the Pakistani courts, any decision on it would have to come from the courts, which it insists require evidence to back the claims of involvement of the individuals.

The Delhi High Court has directed the Centre to clarify its stand on administering a booster dose to those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, saying it does not want a secondwave-like situation on account of being conservative.A bench headed by Justice Vipin Sanghi observed that while the western countries are advocating the administration of a booster dose, Indian experts were of the view that there was no medical evidence to support it.We need to know from experts. It should not be based on economics. It is

an expensive proposition (since vaccines are largely free).
