4,000, even without a full accounting from vulnerable

Agency : Mumbai Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) today informed the Bombay High Court that its open inquiry against former state PWD minister Chhagan Bhujbal and his family for alleged money laundering was still on. Advocate Ashutosh Kumbakoni, appearing for ACB, today told a division bench, headed by Chief Jus-

tice Mohit Shah, that the open inquiry against Bhujbal, his son Pankaj and nephew Sameer was still on. ACB had in February this year submitted its first report to the high court. The agency today told the court that it would submit a second report before the court on April 29. ACB and Enforcement Directorate (ED) had initiated an inquiry against Bhujbal following a petition filed by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alleging that as PWD minister, Bhujbal had favoured a contractor by the name of Chamankar Enterprises to rebuild Maharashtra Sadan in Mumbai and Delhi at a cost of Rs 100 crore.

mountain villages that rescue workers were still struggling to reach two days after the disaster. Udav Prashad Timalsina, the top official for the Gorkha district, where Saturday’s magnitude 7.8 quake was centred, said he was in desperate need of help. “There are people who are not getting food and shelter. I’ve had reports of villages where 70 per cent of the houses have been destroyed,” he said. Aid group World Vision said its staff members were able to reach Gorkha, but gathering information from the villages remained a challenge. Even when roads are clear, the group said, some remote areas can be three days’ walk from Gorkha’s main disaster centre. Aid is slow to reach those hardest hit areas. Matt Darvas with

World Vision said, “It does not seem aid is reaching here very quickly.” Remote northern villages with few concrete buildings were hardest hit. Darvas said, “further north from here the reports are very disturbing,” and three-quarters of the buildings in Singla, a larger village near the epicentre, are believed destroyed. Some roads and trails have been blocked by landslides, the group said in an email to The Associated Press. “In those villages that have been reached, the immediate needs are great including the need for search and rescue, food items, blankets and tarps, and medical treatment.” Timalsina said 223 people had been confirmed dead in Gorkha district but he presumed “the number

100,000-soldier army was involved in rescue operations. “We have 90 per cent of the army out there working on search and rescue,” he said. “We are focusing our efforts on that, on saving lives.” Saturday’s magnitude 7.8 earthquake

spread horror from Kathmandu to small villages and to the slopes of Mount Everest, triggering an avalanche that buried part of the base camp packed with foreign climbers preparing to make their summit attempts.

Will not participate in NJAC, Dattu tells Modi Agency : New Delhi A letter from Chief Justice of India H.L. Dattu to Prime Minister Narendra Modi categorically refusing to participate in the National Judicial Appointments Commission has stalled any immediate chances of constituting the new judicial appointments body. "In response to the call from your office to attend the meeting to select two eminent persons, I have to say that it is neither appropriate nor desirable to attend the meeting or be part of the NHAC till the Supreme Court decides its validity," CJI Dattu wrote in his letter to the PM on April 25. counsel, meanwhile, requested the court to adjourn the matter. The court has now fixed the matter for further consideration on May 26. On April 17, the Supreme court had stayed Kejriwal's prosecution in two criminal defamation cases, including the one filed by Gadkari, and also sought a reply from the Centre on the CM's plea challenging constitutional validity of the penal provisions. The submission by Kejriwal's coun-

We think, now there is nothing left in it," the bench had said after the counsel for Kejriwal sought adjournment in the matter. The bench had further said the petition was "infructuous" while noting that Kejriwal has already furnished his bail bond in the case.

World's First Malaria Vaccine Could be Available Soon The final trials of a malaria vaccine candidate were found to partially protect children against the disease up to four years after vaccination. According to scientists, it may be available by as early as October this year. The results suggest that the vaccine candidate RTS,S/AS01 could prevent a substantial number of cases of clinical malaria, especially in areas of high transmission. In the trial, almost 15,500 children in seven African countries were given three initial vaccine doses over three months. One subject group was aged five to 17 months and the other group was aged six to 12 weeks. Some received a booster shot 18 months later - the effects of which were reported for the first time last Friday. The extra dose, it turned out, "restores some of the immunity lost after the first series of injections", according to study co-author Brian Greenwood of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. "The European Medicines Agency (EMA) will assess the quality, safety, and efficacy of the vaccine based on these final data," said corresponding author Brian Greenwood, professor at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in Britain. "If the EMA gives a favourable opinion, WHO (World Health Organization) could recommend the use of RTS,S/AS01 as early as October this year. If licensed, RTS,S/AS01 would be the first licensed human vaccine against a parasitic disease," Greenwood added. The findings revealed that vaccine efficacy against clinical and severe malaria was better in children than in young infants, but waned over time in both groups. However, protection was prolonged by a booster dose, increasing the average number of cases prevented in both children and young infants. "Despite the falling efficacy over time, there is still a clear benefit from RTS,S/AS01. An average 1,363 cases of clinical malaria were prevented over four years of follow-up for every 1,000 children vaccinated, and 1,774 cases in those who also received a booster shot. Over three years of follow-up, an average 558 cases were averted for every 1,000 infants vaccinated, and 983 cases in those also given a booster dose," Greenwood said. "Given that there were an estimated 198 million malaria cases in 2013, this level of efficacy potentially translates into millions of cases of malaria in children being prevented," suggests Greenwood. The RTS,S/AS01 vaccine was developed for use in sub-Saharan Africa where malaria still kills around 1300 children every day. The phase-3 randomised trial enrolled 15,459 young infants (aged six to 12 weeks at first vaccination) and children (five to 17 months at first vaccination) from 11 sites across seven subSaharan African countries (Burkina Faso, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique and United Republic of Tanzania) with varying levels of malaria transmission. In 2014, initial phase-3 results at 18 months showed vaccine efficacy of about 46 percent against clinical malaria in children and around 27 percent among young infants. There is currently no licensed vaccine against malaria anywhere in the world. These findings were published in the journal The Lancet. - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara

Star Tech: Saif Ali Khan reveals his tech side

Agency : New Delhi On the sidelines of the Asus Zenfone 2 launch event, we got a chance to ask Saif Ali Khan about the tech toys he uses and the ones he is mulling over buying. In an interview with IBNLive, Saif unwrapped that he uses an iPhone 6, BlackBerry Classic, iPad 2, iPod and a PlayStation. Talking about the Zenfone 2, the phone that he unveiled in India on Thursday, Saif said, "I've got

6 Zenfone 2 units and my whole staff is going to use that. This is a very affordable phone when compared to the other high-end ones." Asked about the gadgets that he is planning to buy, he said, "I am planning to buy a projector to watch movies in the Pataudi Palace." Saif's first phone was a brick-sized Motorola in the year 1999 or 2000; he couldn't recall the exact year.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“We were aware of the speculation (about India's possible bid for 2024 Games). We were a bit surprised about this speculation because we thought it may be too quick for India to host a successful Olympic Games. I am happy that India has come out of suspension last year but the IOA has to find its feet,” - International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach on Monday said

Nach Baliye 7: A bit of Bigg Boss, some Splitsvilla and Chetan Bhagat is Judge Dread Agency : Mumbai If I was allowed to get away with writing a one-line review of Nach Baliye 7, it would be – “Chetan Bhagat is now one of the three celebrity judges of Nach Baliye 7”. But since I have had to suffer through over two hours of watching the first episode of the new season, there's no way that either I or you, dear reader, can get away that easily. This is the seventh season of Nach Baliye, the show where “star” couples come and shake a leg. As usual, I am using the word “star” very loosely. Every season,

I marvel at the increasingly obscure couples that the show's producers seem to fish out of the nether depths of Bollywood and TV-dom. This year, there’s a line-up

of couples out of whom I recognised the following: - Payal Rohatgi (claim to fame being that she wore a swimming costume on Bigg Boss and is Rahul

Daughter Sara is not joining films, says 'annoyed' Sachin Tendulkar Agency : New Delhi Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who is making his film debut in a docu-feature on his life, is upset by speculation that his daughter Sara is joining showbiz. "My daughter Sara is enjoying her academic pursuits. Annoyed at all the baseless speculation about her joining films," Tendulkar posted on Twitter on Monday. Rumours were rife that Sara, 17, would be making her Bollywood debut opposite Shahid Kapoor in an upcoming movie. Meanwhile, Sachin is excited about his own film debut. In

March, the master blaster invited his fans to suggest the title for his biopic, conceived by Mumbai-based production company 200 Not Out in co-ordination with World Sports Group, the firm that manages Brand Sachin. The movie, to be directed by London-based

writer-filmmaker James Erskine, promises "never seen before facets and footage" on the cricket legend. Apart from his presence in the movie, Tendulkar is said to be making a lot of contribution to the project, which will capture his phenomenal rise in the world of cricket.

I'm not doing 'Force 2': Katrina Kaif Agency : New Delhi Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif has denied that she would team up with "New York" co-star John Abraham in the upcoming sequel of hit 2011 film "Force". Katrina, 31, was reportedly being eyed by producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah for the female lead in the action film, which will be directed by Abhinay Deo. The original featured actress Genelia Deshmukh as the female protagonist. "Reports about me doing the film opposite John are not true. There is nothing like 'Force 2' happening. The next film I would be working on is Anurag Basu's film 'Jagga Jasoos'," The "Dhoom 3" star said she has her hands full with three back-to-back films "Fitoor", "Jagga Jasoos" and a Karan Johar production directed by Nitya Mehra. "After

Mahajan’s ex) and her husband Sangram Singh, the wrestler. The twist in the tale this year is that the female and male contestants will be locked into two separate houses, and will also have to do tasks every week. So basically, the show is a deadly boring mix of Khatron Ke Khiladi meets Splitsvilla meets Bigg Boss meets Nach Baliye. It’s all so thrilling, I can hardly concentrate on keying in this article. But for all these format changes, this time it isn't as much about the contestants as it is about the judges. Or one judge in particular, the one who made the entire 2.5 hours of the first episode worth watching.

Shruti Haasan talks about dancing with father Kamal Haasan

Agency : Chennai Actress Shruti Hassan feels shaking a leg with father Kamal Haasan on stage was a special moment for her. The "Gabbar is Back" actress and her father performed together and stunned the audience at an award function in Chennai. "Dancing on stage with my father yesterday was such a special moment for me as a daugh-

ter!!! #mydaddyisthebest #memories #toomuchfun," Shruti posted on Twitter. The father-daughter duo danced on Kamal's hit song "Rum Bam Bam Aram bam..." from his 1990 Tamil film "Michael Madhana Kama Rajan". In the ceremony, Kamal presented the award for Best Contribution to Tamil Cinema to AVM Saravanan.

Have taken a big commercial leap with ‘Gabbar Is Back': Krish

Agency : Chennai Filmmaker Krish is known for his humanistic Telugu films such as “Gamyam” and “Vedam”. Now, with his forthcoming Hindi directorial debut “Gabbar Is Back”, he says he has taken a commercial leap. “Gabbar Is Back” is the Hindi remake of Tamil blockbuster “Ramana”, which was written and directed by A.R. Murugadoss over a decade ago. “You could say I’ve gone commercial all guns blazing in ‘Gabbar…’. It was mainly done because of the story, which is about a man who takes corruption

heads on. All my films so far have had commercial elements, but this time I’ve upped the ante,” Krish in an interview. The film, he says, will be the ‘baap’ (father) of all the previous remake versions put together. It has already been remade in Telugu, Kannada and Bengali. The film’s title has already created quite a buzz. Krish says it was chosen for a reason and not merely to cash in on the popularity of the original character. “It was chosen to justify the actions of the lead character. Akshay plays a vigilante against corruption. In the

movie, his actions maybe right, but the path he chooses isn’t,” said Krish and added: “You need good branding to sell any product. Here, Akshay raises his voice against corruption, and he achieves that through the brand name called Gabbar.” “In the movie, there’s a scene where Akshay is writing an anonymous letter to the police and at the same time ‘Sholay’ is playing on the television. He overhears a dialogue and feels that in order to instill fear into corrupt men, Gabbar is the most suitable name,” he said.

but that's the honest truth. "It's not all about you anymore, which is a relief. It's about a bigger world, and helping them find their place in it. It's not about 'me, me, me, the loudmouth' any more-and that takes the pressure off me to live up to those old.

Agency : New Delhi Megastar Amitabh Bachchan is busy filming the left-over shots for Bejoy Nambiar's "Wazir" which he says forms an integral part of the movie. The 72-yearold actor will be seen alongside Farhan Akhtar and Aditi Rao Hydari in the drama in the film which sees him in the role of a paralysed chess grand master. "Work continues over 'Wazir', those last minute left over shots that should form an integral part of the film. The joy of being in the company of familiar faces from production and cast. The fierce fight for the exit and

its next appointment," Bachchan posted on his blog. The actor, who attended a party at Karan Johar's new house along with his son Abhishek Bachchan last night, praised the "Kuch Kuch Hota Hain" director's abode. "We are all at Karan

Johar's for dinner, at his newly acquired apartment, which has some interesting views, awed by its position and space at the terrace of a duplex. The eye line is filled with panoramic visuals of this great metropolis and its impressive land marks.

CICI Bank has report a net profit of Rs 2,922 crore an increase of 10.2% over Rs 2652 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. The bank's earnings were restricted by sluggish corporate loan growth and a surge in provisioning for bad loans. There were some refinancing opportunities and we have also lent to government undertakings," said Kochhar. The bank's profits would have been higher but for a Rs 1,344 crore provision, which included funds set aside for loans that are likely to go bad. field, telecom operators have proposed a licensing regime for over-the-top (OTT) players like WhatsApp and Skype, a view which is opposed by internet firms and associations. This comes after all the stakeholders submitted their comments on Trai's consultation paper on net neutrality. April 24 was the last day to summit the comments. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has released the name and email IDs of over one million people who gave their comments on the consultation paper. The telecom operators said they should be allowed to offer services based on mutual agreements with the OTT players. "There is a pressing need to find a fair regulatory and commercial solution especially for VOIP telephony services, which if

not addressed could endanger the entire Digital India programme of the Government," Vodafone India said in its comments on Trai's consultation paper on regulatory framework for OTT services. However, Nasscom said the Information Technology Act is mandated to ensure this and believe there is no need for any additional regulations for content and services. "Internet Platforms and Services communications do not require licensing. There are user led evaluation reports that helps consumers make an informed choice as they adopt internet platforms and services," Nasscom said. Airtel said, at present, telecom service providers and OTT communication service providers offer the same communication services such as voice. "While TSPs are subject to a number of regulatory and licensing requirements, such as payment of license fee, taxes, security conditions, among others, OTT communication service providers have no such obligations," Airtel said.

IPL 2015: Inconsistent KKR face stiff CSK challenge

Agency : Chennai Enduring an erratic campaign so far, defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders face a stiff challenge when they take on the smooth-sailing Chennai Super Kings in an IPL cricket match here on Tuesday. KKR are currently placed third on the points table with three wins, two losses and

one abandoned match. CSK, on the other hand, have lost only one game in six outings and are steady on the second position. The Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side, dominating on home turf, is coming off a massive win over Kings XI Punjab in which they thrashed the team by 97 runs. If the big names in Chennai's batting

order, like Dwayne Smith, Brendon McCullum, Suresh Raina and Dhoni, has come good in trying times then the bowling has also risen to the challenge. Led by Ashish Nehra and Ishwar Pandey, CSK's bowling arsenal has looked well equipped and delivered whenever required. Even left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, whose non-performance was under the scanner came good in the previous game to pick 3 Kings XI wickets and break the opposition back. KKR, meanwhile, cooled their heels inside the dugout after rain forced abandonment of their clash against table-toppers Rajasthan Royals.

Gayle scored bulk of the runs in the small chase as Kohli was happy to see the fireworks from the nonstriker's end. The West Indian got the small chase going by smashing medium pacer Dominic Joseph for 14 runs off his first over. He looked in his usual devastating touch after missing out in the last game. Gayle later smacked leggie Imran Tahir over mid-wicket to get to his fifty. It was one of the four sixes he hit in his blistering knock. Kohli, who only got to score his first boundary in the seventh over, hit the winning runs, his sublime straight drive that brought the crowd on its feet. His fans chanted 'Kohli Kohli' at regular intervals but in the end, they went home after thoroughly enjoying Gayle's show.

Agency : Mumbai Indian batsman Rohit Sharma today expressed delight about the BCCI's decision to recommend his name for the government's prestigious Arjuna Award and said that he felt "honoured". "Kushi to bahut hai (I feel very happy). I am honoured that BCCI has recommended my name. It felt very good when I heard it yesterday," said Rohit at a

promotional event for adidas here. BCCI took the decision to put forth Rohit's name to the government for the Arjuna Award yesterday at its working committee meeting in Kolkata. The 27year-old Mumbaikar scored a brilliant 264 against Sri Lanka last season, the highest score by anyone in the world in ODI cricket, at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. He is the only batsman to have

scored two ODI double hundreds. Rohit, who is leading Mumbai Indians at this year's Indian Premier League cricket event, said though the team's performance has not been good so far, the squad members are hoping to carry the momentum they got when defending a small total successfully against Sun Risers Hyderabad two days ago. "We could have batted better. Our bowlers won us the game though we were defending a small total. We are hoping to carry the momentum into our next game (against Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium on May 1)," said Rohit. "We have quality in the team. We defended 157 which is not easy to do at the Wankhede Stadium. We are also the side which has scored 210. We have to continue the momentum." "I know we have not performed well, two wins in seven is not good.

Thakur hits back at Srinivasan, writes open letter to ICC Agency : New Delhi The internal feud within the BCCI took an ugly turn today with Board Secretary Anurag Thakur launching a stinging attack on ICC Chairman N Srinivasan, saying that he should actually share information on bookies with his own family members "whose involvement in betting has been proved". A day after ICC issued an advisory to Thakur to stay away from suspected bookies, the BCCI

secretary hit back at Srinivasan through an open letter in which he questioned the timing of the "counter offensive" initiated at the behest of the ICC Chairman. Reports had said that BCCI was sent a letter by the ICC about Thakur being seen with an alleged bookie Karan Gilhotra in Chandigarh and the BJP MP's office today issued a media release. "The BCCI has received intimation from the ICC ostensibly under

your direction that I should keep away from one Mr. Karan Gilhotra who is a 'suspected bookie'. The intimation furthur states that the information is furthur unverified" Thakur said in a scathing letter to Srinivasan.

Daughter plays son Mukesh Ambani regains richest DPS rolls back fee hike after to mom, lights pyre Indian slot from Dilip Shanghvi meeting with Education Minister Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

On Sunday those present at Dudheshwar crematorium witnessed a woman performing the last rites of her mother — generally performed by the son. Not only that, she entered the crematorium grounds giving shoulder to the bier of her mother. "It was my mother Jayaben's last wish and I was more than willing to do it," said Geeta Trivedi, 54, a resident of Halim ni Khadki area in Shahpur. For Trivedi, the act was more than symbolic as she performed the duties like the family's son for many years. She is younger of two sisters. The family had always struggled to make two ends meet and thus when her father retired from his service in 1998, she took it upon herself to run the house even as her father went to a shop. "My elder sister Madhu got married 30 years ago. After

her marriage, it was a question for my parents and about their future. During one such discussion, I decided not to get married as I didn't know whether my husband would understand my feelings. I stayed with my parents and ensured that they had a comfortable life," she said. After her father died at the age of 85 in 2006, the mother and daughter were all alone. "My mother, who lived 82 fruitful years, often used to tell me that she never missed having a son as she had me by her side always. She also used to say that it would be me who would perform her last rites. She had said it to others as well. Thus, when the moment unfortunately came on Saturday after her demise due to jaundice, the family had no hesitation," said Trivedi. The last rites of her father were performed by a cousin.

Now, locker thief says he didn’t steal papers or jewellery Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

Devansh Amin, the self-confessed locker thief, has done a U-turn after his arrest on Saturday, and now says he didn't steal any jewellery or document. Earlier, Amin had turned up before the police on his own with bags full of money which, he said, he had stolen from locker number 492 at the basement of Iscon Mega Mall on SG Road. The locker belongs to Jayesh Prajapati of Satellite. A press release issued by the crime branch last

Tuesday had claimed that Amin had turned up on his own with Rs 2.30 crore claiming that he had stolen the money from locker number 492. He had also claimed to have stolen documents and jewellery that he had not brought to the police. Crime branch officials had let him go with a simple notice, allegedly on the advice of a senior police inspector posted in the crime branch. Strangely, even at that time, the police were less bothered about the cash that

Amin had surrendered than about the documents he claimed to have in his possession. Sources in the police said the documents, if recovered, would reveal the names of some important people, including retired and serving government officials. The sources also say that a senior police official from Gandhinagar had then called sleuths of the city crime branch and asked them to return the money to the locker owner without registering an FIR.
