Woman delivers baby at Thane railway station clinic
Thane : A 20-year-old woman travelling to Mumbai in a long-distance train gave birth to a baby at a clinic in Thane railway station early on Saturday. Pooja Munna Chauhan, who was travelling in Kokan Kanya Express, started experiencing labour pains around 5.40 am, sources said. When the train halted at Thane railway station, the station manager asked the One Rupee Clinic staff to attend to the patient, they said. “Our staff rushed to the train, but by that time the delivery process had started. The patient was immediately shifted to our clinic, where she delivered a male child. The baby is normal,” Dr Rahul Ghule, CEO of One Rupee Clinic, said. The child and his mother were later shifted to a civil hospital, he added.

RBI to issue new ‘greenish yellow’ coloured Rs 20 notes soon
New Delhi : The Reserve Bank of India will soon be issuing new Rs 20 notes. The notes will come in a greenish yellow colour and will be a continuation of the Mahatma Gandhi series. The new notes will have a motif of Ellora Caves on the reverse, depicting the country’s cultural heritage, a press release by the RBI said. While the base colour of the note will have be Greenish Yellow, it will have “other designs, geometric patterns aligning with the overall colour scheme, both at the obverse and reverse”. Election hyperbole: Sifting the wheat from the chaff
At the end of every year, a quiet burial takes place without any visible grieving or audible mourning, or a dead body. What dies is a technology which has been hyped up to overtake the world, change lives or revolutionise the world. Often trumpeted as the next best thing, many technologies quietly pass into the night or unobtrusively fall by the wayside. A funeral does take place, but mostly in the specialist magazines or websites devoted to technology. Technologies now compete with dead brands for space in the graveyard of the redundant and defunct—remember brands like Dalda, Murphy’s radio, Chiclets chewing gum, aerated drink Campa Cola or Binaca toothpaste? It’s that time of the year when some political brands will finally experience public disaffection, get rejected by target audiences and perhaps even fade into the twilight of political oblivion. Like hoopla in technology, it’s also the high season for hype in politics. It’s a bit facetious to compare elections and their results with markets-based outcomes; elections are the ultimate test of democracy and the citizen’s act of casting one single vote subsumes multiple layers of political ideologies and thought processes. But, importantly, it is also a credible hype-buster. Gartner, a research and advisory firm, has developed a methodology called Gartner Hype Cycles, which is intended to help companies separate viable technologies from hype, especially in the face of audacious promises made by new technologies. Many companies continuously evaluate emerging technologies to figure out their strategic utility and the competitive edge they can provide. According to the Gartner website, “Gartner Hype Cycles provide a graphic representation of the maturity and adoption of technologies and applications, and how they are potentially relevant to solving real business problems and exploiting new opportunities. Gartner Hype Cycle methodology gives you a view of how a technology or application will evolve over time, providing a sound source of insight to manage its deployment…” In the end, as the literature indicates, the Hype Cycles are intended to help futurists and strategists distinguish between the commercial value of a technology and the hype surrounding it. Seen differently, it helps companies minimise the risks of investing in specious technology. For example, in its latest report (titled Most Hyped Trends for 2019), Gartner sees artificial intelligence, blockchain and intelligent things as technologies that will continue to get attention and investment during 2019. But Gartner does add that despite the gigantic hype surrounding AI, companies must know where to focus to tap into the technology’s transformative potential. Likewise, blockchain is not a revolutionary technology but a definite step change in data security and transparency. Suffice it to say that the cemetery of past hyped (and, subsequently, failed) technologies is today looking rather over-crowded. This columnist was once the proud owner of a Palm Pilot personal digital assistant (PDA), which now lies obsolete and unused. The company that manufactured Palm Pilots, failed to take PDAs to the next level; after being passed around a few hopeful acquirers, the product had to be taken off life support and quietly buried. Remember Iridium satellite phones? Promised as a game-changer, Iridium was to provide global telephony infrastructure through a network of over 60 satellites. In the end, the $7-billion spectacular flame-out also singed some Indian institutions, including IL&FS Venture Fund, all of whom invested in the project at the behest of the currently beleaguered Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Ltd. The project failed to gauge market expectations, technological developments and, most importantly, customer needs. Elections provide a quinquennial test-bed—once every five years, politicians making claims they can’t live up to or promises that sound too outlandish get sorted out. With election campaign pitch reaching absurd levels, it might be instructive to weigh some of the achievements which have - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara been hyped up by this Editor government.

New Delhi : Hundreds of Air India passengers were left stranded at several airports across the world due to a glitch in its checkin software, the airline said Saturday. The airline’s “server is down”, an official said. “SITA server is down. Due to which flight operation is affected. Our technical teams are on work and soon system may be recovered,” the airline’s spokesperson said. Air India’s software solution is managed by SITA, a global airlines IT services major, which provides its check-in, boarding and baggage tracking technology. According to an Air India
official, the server was down since around 3 a.m. Saturday morning due to which the airline is unable to issue boarding passes to passengers at airports across the world. Many passengers complained

Ahmedabad : Multinational food and beverages firm, PepsiCo India offered to settle lawsuits against farmers in Gujarat on Friday. PepsiCo, during a hearing in a Commercial Court in Gujarat said the farmers could either join the group of growers who exclusively grow the FC5 variety for its Lay’s potato chips or cultivate other varieties of potatoes. “PepsiCo India has proposed to amicably settle with the people who
were unlawfully using the seeds of its registered variety. PepsiCo has also proposed that they may become part of its collaborative potato farming programme,” the company spokesman said in a statement. If the farmers do not wish to grow the FC5 potato variety for PepsiCo, they can simply sign an agreement with the company to cultivate other available varieties, he added. Nine farmers from Sabarkantha and Aravalli districts have
been sued by the firm for allegedly cultivating the FC5 potato variety, grown exclusively for its PepsiCo’s Lays potato chips, for which it has claimed Plant Variety Protection (PVP) rights. Senior counsel Anand Yagnik, who appeared for the four farmers of Sabarkantha district, told the court he would discuss the settlement

Greenfield medical college hospitals in remote areas would also be given substantial financial assistance according to the policy. Environmentalists are aghast at the growing incidents of trees being razed, uprooted and truncated in the city. The civic authorities in the last one month had razed over 900 trees planted by Nature Club Surat over a period of four years near educational institutes in Piplod and Vesu for road widening and cleaning up of open plots of garbage and filth. NCS officials say the trees had attained approximately 15 feet in
height and were properly nurtured by volunteers and gardeners. The tree species razed included Gulmohar, Banyan, Peepal, Saven, Kadam, Singapore Cherry, India Coral, Bael etc. About 180 native tree species were recently razed in the compound of Kendriya Vidyalaya at Ichhanath, for clearing the trash dumped by the residents of EWS Colony. NSC volunteers said the trees were being nurtured since the last few months at the school compound.
